This was our very first cruise and we booked this cruise (Danube Delights) after reading reviews on the company and I can safely say it was one of the best holidays we have had. So much so that we have booked again for next year on the Jewels of the Rhine cruise. All correspondence with the company from booking to travelling was first class and we were informed about a week before sailing that the ship had been changed for operational reasons. We should have been on the Sun but were moved to The Sky. This did not matter in the least because all of the ships which sail this route are practically identical. Embarkation was really smooth after being picked up from Munich Airport and taken to Nuremburg by coach. We were offered a cocktail on arrival at the reception desk and then taken to our cabin by our Steward (Martin who was extremely polite and smiled all of the time and kept our cabin pristine) who explained everything we needed to know and our cases were brought from the coach for us and left in our cabins for us while we went to the lounge bar for a very welcome light lunch. The cabin was not as small as we were expecting and I can say we have stayed in top grade hotel rooms which were smaller. The cabin was immaculately clean and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was small as you would expect but the shower was a good size and the water was always hot. The "inside balcony" with its floor to ceiling window which can be lowered halfway meant that even if we were in the cabin we could sit and watch the stunning scenery go by. There was ample drawer and wardrobe space and the safe and fridge were free to use. The food was fantastic and it was easy to see that the chef used the best quality ingredients. We were also treated to local cuisines depending on where we were at the time. All waiters and bar staff were excellent and worked tirelessly. There was a resident pianist in the bar who was really good and we were treated to a visit by an Oompah Band in Regensberg and a Hungarian Folk Dancing group in Budapest. Other than that there was not much entertainment on board but we had gone for a relaxing holiday and enjoyed talking to other guests in the bar whilst having a drink. The passengers were from USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland and UK and all seemed to mix well. The shore excursions were very good and the guides excellent and they gave us enough freetime after the walking tours. The Tour Manager Nina, was excellent and made sure that everything ran smoothly. Disembarkation was smooth and well organised and we were transported back to Budapest Airport in coaches. We are now River Cruise converts. Well done Emerald !!!!! Read Less

The cruise was preceded with a three day stay in Prague, at the 4* Hotel Grandium. This in itself was an absolute delight, excellent food, room, fellow passengers and our lovely Prague tour guide, Jakob. After our stay there, we were transported in a luxurious coach to embark the Emerald Sun at Regensburg. This was instead of Nuremberg due to the water level for the Danube being lower than usual and the ship didn't have the draft. The ship is very well laid out with spacious restaurant, superb cuisine, included wine and beer and ample opportunity to make new friends if desired. Our cabin, well appointed, a electrically operated full scale window, very comfortable bed, very adequate shower and storage. The entertainment was very good and original using local entertainers and even visiting local families and their homes. The staff from Captain to engine room staff were very courteous and welcoming, all English speaking and extremely helpful. Our entertainments manager, Nina was a pure delight, she was so hardworking, funny, a real beauty and very supportive and kind. The shore excursions were very interesting and well planned. We had a wonderful evening meal in a palace with traditional dancers and music. We also went one evening to a Strauss Chamber music event, again in a palace in Vienna - marvellous! We would certainly use Emerald again and would recommend it to you based on the experience my wife and I had. Read Less

Decided to try river cruising after many ocean trips. Interesting itinerary on the Main and Rhine rivers, with quaint medieval towns and lots of castles. Excellent guides on the walking tours. Unable to use sun deck for first few days because of low bridges on the Main, so outside space very limited. Pool area small but pleasant to sit in, gym extremely small! Evening entertainment was very limited - pianist or occasional film. Cabin and public areas were well maintained. Coffee machine in the lounge was well used produced better coffee than the dining room. Food was mostly a triumph of style over substance - nicely presented but disappointing food, bland and lacking in both quality and quantity. Included wines were of much better standard than the food. For a holiday costing as much as a high end ocean cruise, this is unacceptable. Will probably stick to the high seas in future! Read Less

The shore excursions was up to standard and very enjoyable and interesting. A very well enjoyed River cruise and definitely going again with Emerald Waterways. I would recommend this company to whoever is thinking of carrying out a River cruise. I have done four ocean cruises before and it's completely different to a River cruise it's more relax with only 182 persons onboard. The ships on Emerald Waterways have an indoor headed pool which converts into a cinema in the evenings so you can relax watching a movie. The price you pay includes, cruise, excursións and drinks ( wine, beer & soft drinks ) during lunch and dinner. Read Less

Wonderful cruise! I met the 8 day Danube River cruise, in Nurenberg. The port was easy to find, and my taxi was met with a greeter from the ship. Embarkation was easy, as it’s a small ship (regular river boat size), with a small amount of passengers, so no one ever had to wait in line etc. The ship was pretty and clean. I got there early, so was invited to relax in the lounge, and enjoy a light buffet meal, until my cabin was ready. I had chose one of the two single cabins, as I went alone, and while it was narrow and small, it had a small window up high, and was comfortable, modern, and well equipped. The food was very good all the time, while not being over the top gourmet, and wine was complimentary at both lunch and dinner - a very nice addition. My fellow passengers were mostly middle aged, or older, British, Australian, Canadian and American, mostly, and very nice. The older people were really quite amazing - as you’d see them drinking, playing games, laughing, and chatting, until the wee hours of the morning, then, they’d be up first thing, bursting with energy, to get on the complimentary tours! One, thing, most tours started early - 9 ish, usually, which, for a Yank, with jet lag, and time change - (9 AM for me, was 2 AM), it was almost impossible to waken in time. Not sure why they were so early? As on vacation, one generally loves sleeping in a bit - perhaps to try and avoid the afternoon heat in August? Not sure. But my suggestion, is to try and arrive in Europe several days early, to give your body a chance to adjust to the time change. The ship was very comfortable and pretty. My favorite thing was the complimentary Cappuccino machines - available in the lounge and by the pool - fabulous - for coffee lovers! Also, the small, “eternity” pool, is wonderful for those of us who are swim addicts. The ship also offered bicycles, to ride near where we stopped, or even ride to our next stop, as two couples did. The rooftop deck was fabulous at night, to walk after dinner, stare at the passing sights, (particularly amazing in Budapest), or have a drink and enjoy the company of new friends. The employees were all just wonderful, and really made the experience, with the their smiles, laughter, helpfulness and friendliness. The entertainment was a bit homespun, which is expected on a small ship, with no actual theater, and a small number of passengers and crew - but this is not why people cruise the Danube, and I thought they did a smashing job, with games, and their crew performance - charming and funny. The tours were good as well - though there’s a LOT to see, so site exhausting. All in all - a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I would go again, with this lovely company, in a heartbeat. The staff was extraordinary especially the cruise director, Darren, and all the front desk staff but also the wait staff was great, everyone so nice and friendly and pleasant, including the cabin stewards and just every employee made you feel special. The pianist Benny was amazingly talented and versatile and my group loved him! The ship is beautiful, the cabins spacious and light, it is all top notch! The food wonderful and especially enjoyed the fact that they included regional specialties at the meals! The two on board performances they had were so enjoyable too. The ports we visited were lovely and we all especially enjoyed the tea with the local family in Braislava. I really highly recommend the Emerald Sun to anyone wanting to river cruise in Europe! The crew handled the embarkation and disembarkation expertly. The only glitch was that my husband's baggage was set aside to the new passenger side at the end instead of the leaving passenger's. Not sure how this happened as they were together outside our door. The ship feels new and is organized very well. Unfortunately, it was cool and rainy so we didn't get to use the space at the top of the ship which would have been nice. The ship was always very clean as was the cabin. The cabin has a lovely full-length window that pulls down half way allowing for a balcony feel. The cabin is small as I imagine most are on cruises (this was our first cruise) but very well appointed and we felt very comfortable relaxing there when that's what we wanted to do. As I have food intolerances, there was a detailed menu sent to my room daily with the foods I could not have highlighted. This I considered above and beyond. However, the food was not always substituted - sometimes the offending item was just left out (ex. a salad with no dressing) and one night I was given a meal with dairy and gluten having been told it had none. Other nights, the meals had good substitutions. The lunch and breakfast always had lots of options so I never felt deprived at all. The shore excursions were excellent and we treated ourselves to the Viennese concert which was well worth the money spent. The service was exemplary and the crew always friendly and eager to please. The entertainment was spotty but we really didn't expect much in terms of that anyway. Read Less

We took the cruise on Jun 2017, downstream the Main Canal from Nuremburg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. We fly into Munich and was transferred to the boat using Emerald's transfer service, which was included in the cruise price. Their agent staff meet as at the arrival hall, help us with our luggage and took as to the transfer vehicle, which is spacious, clean and very comfortable. Our chauffeur did not speak English, but he understand the language well, or perhaps I should say we didn't understand German. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the boat's cruise Director, and we were service a nice cool drink to refresh ourselves. Staff took care of our luggage, and when we went on to our stateroom, our luggage were there waiting for us. Since we arrive a bit early, we were encourage to take a shuttle bus (included) to the town and look around. We walk around, do a bit of sight seeing, using the map Emerald cruise provided, and then get back on the shuttle bus and back to the boat again. The departure time was about 5pm, as a few other passengers arrived after us. First evening, we were invited to a meeting, introducing us to all the facilities on board, as well as whereabout the life jackets were, then follow by the port talk. Afterwards, we went to dinner. Every evening there was the port talk before dinner or after dinner, and we ate at the main dinning room. Other choices are in their lounge. They offer 3 courses, appetizer, entrée, desert, coffee & tea. Food was not great, mostly Australian cooking. However, we found that the kitchen staff didn't cook the steak the way it was ordered, mostly it was overcooked and dry. The Chef seemed to be from India, and liked to use curry. Emerald Sun, the cruise boat, built in 2015, looked great (almost brand new to my eyes) has a great design on its balcony, with the windows open it is a balcony and close it is a floor to ceiling window (we have the panorama balcony suite). Viewing the river scene from the stateroom was excellent, nothing to block your view. We love to open the window for the morning fresh air, sit in the deck area to enjoy the scene. If weather is cold, with a touch of botton, we closed the windows. The room design was great, as you don't feel that the room is less than 200 sq ft. Plenty of closet space, spacious bathroom, and amenities included bathrobes, hiking sticks, bottle water, guide book etc. Every day, we can get to a port, and local guided tour was included. Some days, we can go hiking with the help of the hiking sticks (I wish they put two pairs in each stateroom). Some active bikers can borrow the bike from the boat and do biking tours. However, the bikes are not electric-assisted ones like Emerald's parent company Scenic, Uniworld etc. Another one is the bathroom usuage fee in Europe. I have heard that some other ultra luxury cruise company, like Taulk tour, has that included. Didn't know how it work, but they did. We disembark in Budapest, and we can only book Courtyard Marriot via Emerald Cruise as post cruise staying hotel. That was further in town, not close to the river, like Marriot Hotel or Four Seasons. However, one advantage of Courtyard Marriot is Emerald cruise included all transfer to and from boat and from Courtyard Marriott to airport. Another advantage is that the Courtyard Marriott is close to the New York Café, the most elegant and beautiful cafe in the world , located inside the Boscolo Hotel, was just 5 minutes walk around the street. Once we arrived in Nuremberg we were greeted at the airport by our transfer. Since we arrived in Nuremberg at 5:30 am we had a few hours to spare before we could board the ship. Our driver gave us a private tour of his city and took us to his favorite bratwurst stand and treated us to lunch. Once we arrived at the ship our room was waiting for us, it met all of our expectations and then some. Dining at 7 was not a problem for us nor did we feel rushed, we had plenty of time to enjoy our dinner and converse afterward. We also did not find the dining room noisy as others may have. If anything it was people meeting new friends from all over the world and having a great time together. Compared to the large cruise ships that get very noisy, I prefer the smaller ships any day. We did participate in some of the on board activities and enjoyed them very much. The rooms are very sound proof, we could not hear music or noise coming from any late entertainment, which I think the latest ended around 11 each evening, if that late. The off shore excursions and tours were all led by very knowledgeable tour guides and were not rushed. We had ample time to browse around or shop after touring each city. After a very nice, relaxing breakfast and a goodbye visit with our new friends we were timely transported to the Amsterdam airport. We went to Paris for a few days after our cruise, which was on a much faster pace. We were both wishing we had gone to Paris first then the cruise, it was so relaxing! The crew and staff of the Emerald Sun are all assets to this cruise line, they provided us with the best service around! Thank you all so very much for making our cruise the highlight of our trip to Europe! Read Less

I have just returned from a week's cruise on the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest. This is my second river cruise. The first being on The Nile, 9 years ago. The ship was lovely. Well appointed and spotlessly clean. Our cabin was luxurious and comfortable and we received a free upgrade. Many people we met had also been upgraded which leads me to believe that this is Emerald policy if they have empty rooms - and a good one! My only criticism about the accommodation is that the lounge and dining room were not big enough for the number of people on the ship and it was difficult to fit everyone in. You were often left looking around for a table at meal times and we had to get to the restaurant early and queue to ensure that we got a table that accommodated 6 people. We chose to eat in the lounge area for lunch because it was more relaxing. Had the weather been better, I expect that the top, outdoor deck would have been utilised more relieving pressure on the other rooms but this wouldn't make any difference at dinner time and in the evenings. Food was plentiful and of very good quality but the wines on offer could have been better. We did, eventually, find a wine that suited us but always had to ask for it specifically and often wait for it to be found. It was nice to have the option to eat in the dining room or the lounge. Several members of our party chose the 20 euros per day drinks package. This was excellent value for money but, sadly, didn't include sparkling wine. Entertainment was low key. There were two external and two in-house shows. All were very good. It would have been nice to have a show of some sort after dinner each evening, too. The pianist in the evenings was excellent but little variation. Service across the board was excellent. The staff work as a team and are an asset to the company. We were invited to dine with the Captain one evening, which was a wonderful experience, and my brother-in-law, who celebrated his birthday on the same day, was made to feel special leading to a great evening. Shore excursions were good. All of the guides were helpful and spoke very good English. However, the walks were very short. Our group had an average age of 63 but found them too easy. It seemed that they were geared for older people (the average age on the ship must have been about 70). Overall, we had a great time. We saw lots and had many laughs. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't always kind to us but that's how it goes. If I were to go on a river cruise again, I would certainly choose Emerald as I know that they would give me a quality experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was on a small ship and on a river - the Danube - which we have never visited before and which looked varied and interesting. The facilities looked luxurious and the package looked good value for money. Everything lived up to our expectations and more. Emerald Sun is new for 2016 and a remarkable piece of naval engineering: much of the top deck structures raised and lowered to accommodate bridge heights and water levels. Our cabin was splendid - large bed, plenty of storage and hanging space, spacious en suite shower room and a miraculous balcony with a glass panel we could lower to be in the open air. We appreciated the Nespresso machine, too. Public areas of the ship are spacious and comfortable. I particularly liked the swimming pool which is small but has an infinity wave machine so you can swim against resistance as far as you like, but remain in the same spot - bit weird looking out at the river. Food is plentiful and varied with buffet arrangements for breakfast and lunch. Eggs and omelettes are cooked to order at breakfast and there's an endless supply of anything else you might want to eat. Lunch and dinner are both four courses and wine, beer and soft drinks are included with both. Tea and coffee are available all the time in the Horizon Lounge. I was a bit disappointed with the 'vegetarian' offerings but then I always am, believing that there are few chefs who can cater for veggies. I do eat fish, however, and there was always a fish dish. Perhaps the best thing about the whole trip were the shore excursions, with at least one each day included in the price. They are thoughtfully organised so you are back in time for lunch: this meant we spent hardly anything during the holiday. Entertainment was varied, if a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent with plenty of choice for the mains, although dessert choices were limited. Dinners were served at table on most nights and were variable, but generally good. There were plenty of free drinks at meals and these were promptly refilled! Service was of a high standard. Staff were friendly, polite, helpful and efficient. There were plenty of activities and the schedule was highly organised. I was extremely impressed with organisation overall. Everything ran like clockwork. The included guided tours were excellent and very enjoyable. Extra trips were also superb - a wonderful Viennese concert and a visit to a Slovakian family for coffee - and I have already told many friends about these and how enjoyable they were. This was our 2nd Emerald cruise, this time it was The Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. We arrived at Munich airport to a well organised transfer to the ship. Slight delay boarding so we were well looked after with refreshments at a local hotel. The cabins on board are excellent, with a high comfort factor, very nicely appointed with large flat screen TV, hairdryer, robes. We were on a lower deck, with no balcony. It was fine, the window allowed river views so we could see the weather conditions! No engine noise, just some shuddering when docking. The lounge bar is very comfortable, although a personal preference would be for the furnishings off its sister ship. The sofas are very deep, not the best for short people and those with mobility problems. Staff are superb, regardless of department. Some are absolutely outstanding. The cruise director was excellent, informative & helpful. The restaurant, wow, what can I say, except I'm now dieting! The cuisine was amazing, great choice at all mealtimes, whether it be a light bight in the lounge or a 5 course Gala dinner. No complaints, only compliments to the chef, his team and restaurant staff. Always delicious wines to compliment both lunch & dinner. The included excursions were well organised, informative and enjoyable. However there were occasions when a member of our party could not participate due to mobility problems. This was usually due to being docked alongside other vessels and having to cross over boats. If it meant crossing from the sun terrace onto another boat, then there is no elevator to the top deck. Also other boats may not have elevators at all. We've already booked our next river cruise with Emerald, exceptional holidays. Read Less

First river cruise and loved it. Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere with crew and cruisers. Arrived in Nuremberg 2 days before sailing. Flew to Munich from Toronto. Took Flixibus to Nuremberg (2 hour drive). Ate some great food (bratwurst and sauerkraut, pretzel, gingerbread) and drank some dark beer. Embarkation was smooth. Arrived at 2:30 p.m. by taxi (15 minute drive, 20 euros). Friendly welcome by crew members. The cabin was small but had good storage space. The lounge was big, quiet, a relaxing meeting place. I would sit in one of the comfy sofas with a cup of coffee from their beverage corner and write in my journal. The dining room had a variety of seating arrangements. A chance to socialize with other cruisers and have a great meal. The soups and cheeses were delicious. The entertainment in the evening was George the piano player or you could hang out in the front/outside of the lounge and enjoy the view. If it was chilly they had heaters over the sofas to warm you up. One evening they had a crew show, very funny. I enjoyed the shore excursions, informative guides. The tours were only a few hours so never tiring. Always time in the afternoon for a dip in the pool or a short nap. The best part was the crew. Love, love, love them! Great experience! All of the services were world class, housekeeping, tour director, bar and restaurant staff. Cabin was very clean and well appointed, but small, and the sliding door to the bathroom was awkward. We used the bicycles on several days, which was a great way to see more of the cities, however the bikes themselves were heavy and difficult to handle, with drag (pedal backward) brakes and a weird frame geometry. One suggestion for Emerald would be to provide a few higher end, lighter bikes for those passengers who are experienced city riders. The food was great, but a little much of a muchness after several days, and we found ourselves craving hot spicy Indian food on one of the evenings, so we went ashore to satisfy that need! We were reprimanded for bringing our own bottle to the table on one of the evenings, which is understandable, but suggest that Emerald introduce an optional corkage fee, for those special occasions when you want to bring something very nice to the table. This was our 1st European River cruise (we were a group of 3 adult couples, late 60's-early 70's, all from Iowa) and we all loved our cruise. The cabin we stayed in (#328/Panorama Balcony Suite) was quite comfortable, and we had plenty of room to unpack all of our belongings. The crew was fantastic...very friendly, very helpful, very courteous. They took care of our every need. The day trips and guides were local and quite knowledgeable about the history of their city, and all walking tours and even some bus tours were included in our fare, along with all tips. Beverages were available for free at meals (wine, beer, soda, coffee, tea, etc.) and at other times were available either individually or you could purchase a drink package that was customized for your preferences (which several of our group did.) The food was excellent, with many choices for each meal. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, and each evening we had a sit-down full service, 4-5 course meal, with choices for each course. There are so many different cruise lines going to the same places, my wife did a spread-sheet so we could compare them all, and we chose Emerald which we felt would offer us the best value for our money. We were not disappointed in our choice. I would not hesitate to recommend them, and will no doubt use Emerald Waterways again! Read Less

Having been on sea cruises before, with tiny cabins, our cabin on the Emerald Sun was a very pleasant surprise, both in terms of size and the included toiletries - shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion etc. The cruise took us down the Danube Main Canal to the Danube river from Nuremberg to Budapest. The first full day included stop offs in Passau and Regensberg, but we were happy to sit up top and watch the fantastic scenery go by. We also stopped at Linz and Melk before reaching Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, where we had a full day in each city. At each city there was a walking and/or coach tour included at no extra cost, and fantastic, knowledgeable guides to take us around the sites, and outline the history of the area. We had small receivers with ear phones in our cabins and these were used for each tour, connected to the guide's microphone, so they didn't have to shout to be heard above other guides in the area. On board there was a lovely dining room, with a great range of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had two special five-course meals whilst on board, with exquisite food and wine. Again the staff were amazing in both their knowledge and service. In the lounge, there was a bar with a great range of branded drinks and a piano player providing entertainment. Drinks were included with meals but we chose to upgrade to a premium drinks package, so had unlimited drinks for an additional 19.90 euros per person, per day. Well worth doing. There was also additional entertainment with an Oompa band joining us for an evening in Austria and a Hungarian folk band in Budapest. The ship's crew also provided an entertaining show of sketches, tricks and songs one evening. We really enjoyed the cruise - more so than the sea cruise we had been on previously. There were a range of passengers on board from the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Jamaica, Israel as well as other nations - a great mix who got on very well together. The age range was predominantly 40+, with some younger passengers but not many. We would definitely recommend this type of holiday to truly relax, see amazing scenery and explore some truly magnificent places. One of the best holidays we've ever had, in terms of service, destinations, accommodation and overall enjoyment. Read Less

We had been asked by a group of friends to go on a river cruise. We had traveled around Germany prior to the cruise and spent the prior two nights in Nuremberg before joining the group on the Emerald Sun. Did have trouble contacting the ship for docking location and instructions but finally reached them by e-mail. We had looked into the cruise and found it to be a new cruise company with new boats. The Cabin was average and had a window in the cabin. Unfortunately, the cabin had no view as it was right at the water line. The staff was remarkable. Very well presented with even the captain coming out of hiding and being around the decks at times. Staff answered many questions that I had regarding what there was to do in the ports. There wasn't much in the way of entertainment compared to ocean going cruises which we have been on many times. The boat is only so big to wander around. They had a band come onboard a couple of nights to play and a piano player playing on other nights. They had a couple of game night activities that involved the entire ship. Very few used the pool that we saw and even fewer availed themselves to the high tech theatre. Dining was one issue that was definitely different. Breakfasts and lunches were buffet style as were two dinners while onboard. The other five dinners featured local favorites. I didn't much care for their selections so thank goodness they had their anytime options and I had grilled chicken. Presentation of meals was very good with splashes of color that added a flare to the plate but portion sizes were very small. Also, we had to ask for additional rolls as they brought only enough just for the table and water glasses were also hard to get filled. A couple of times I had to get up and fill my own. Meals lacked any spice and seemed rather bland to me. When we got home I had to go to Taco Bell to get some spice as my taste buds were in need. Services were good on the cruise. Port and shore excursions in the brochure sounded like they would be longer with them actually ranging from one to one and a half hours with the exception of four hours in Budapest. Guides were local and spoke good English. The best excursion was a cultural exchange with a person from Slovakia for a couple of hours. Learning about their country and getting a feel for their culture was a good experience. The bike ride between cities was also a welcome break from the ship and gave a different view of the country traveled. We didn't go on any of their Plus tours but did manage to get to the sights using public transport and found them interesting. Disembarkation was good with shuttle service to the airport on time for flights. I would probably not go on another river cruise but it was a good experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise in order to enjoy the tranquillity and easy pace of a river cruise and multi city stops down through the mighty Danube and it ticked every box. As experienced cruisers we knew what to expect and all our expectations were realised, from the cabin to dinning facilities, friendly staff and crew all of who went out their way to ensure a most enjoyable on board experience. All the meals were of the highest order from choice to quality and presentation, including the buffet breakfast and occasional buffet diner. The included shore excursions were a good mix of culture history and architecture with additional extra choices to suit all tastes. Lastly but not least we compared the itinerary and price with other cruise lines and found Emerald to be extremely competitive and the included premium drinks package was a real winner. Will definitely use Emerald again for my next river cruise. Read Less

Just back form a 7 night Danube cruise from Nurenburg to beautiful Budapest on Emerals Sun, what a fantastic week, each and everyone of the crew were brilliant from Georgina our cabin stewardess to Robert our waiter in the dining room and Olga in the lounge bar though every crew member made sure we wanted for nothing. Simona the Cruise Director made sure that all the excursions ran smoothly and pick ups and drop offs were exactly as planned, a hard job logistically. What a beautiful ship with fantastic food. The excursions were great with very frinedly, knowledgeable tour guides, especially Eva who was our guide for the Slazburg tour, she had us all singing the songs from Sound of Music, not everyones cup of tea but it just seemed appropriate when we were in he locations were it was filmed. I will definately be back on an Emerald river cruise and would highly recommend them to all my family and friends, if you haven't tried it then I would say you are missing out on a wonderful cruise. The Emerald Sun is a modern River vessel launched in August 2015. We started from Nuremberg flying into Munich unfortunately no time to explore area before departing. The Emerald Sun is laid out over 4 decks - 3 accessible by lift. (-1 0 1) Sundeck only accessible by stairs. After boarding transfer at Munich we didn't have to handle luggage until unpacking in cabin. The Cabin My cabin was a Panoramic Balcony room which meant a full glass window that opens often called a French Balcony, The room was a bit tight of space when set up as a twin rather than a double with a gap of about 18" between bed and bathroom door. As a double about 28" meaning if you have a mobility issue may be tight. The bathroom door is opposite main window so you need to think when coming out of shower, they do provide a robe (one size fits all. lol) so you need to make sure heavy blind down if you have a 200 number cabin as you are at ground level and can be overlooked. The mattress was a memory foam type and pillows very soft looked thick but compressed very quickly (Either fibre or foam crumb type) so you may need to use that extra one. Duvet was feather filled which may affect some guests. The wardrobe is a decent size 20 hangers and 2 large drawers. A mini-safe, hair drier and a chargeable minibar. The balcony area has two chairs and a table. No kettle in room however bottles of water are provided to drink. A large flat screen LG Tv with movies and info centre to help guests. The Emerald Sun do not have any cabins for Less Mobile. Instead of do not disturb signs the ship has a switch which turns on a Red light to advise do not disturb, however our cabin stewardess didn't take any notice of this. The cabin are very clean and uncluttered with very neutral colours, it would have been nice to have had a bit more colour. The Restaurant The restaurant is on the Ground Floor with a large mix of table from 2 to 12 with an open seating policy. Most meals are served here accept light meals, mid morning, afternoon tea and late night snacks which are served in bar. Breakfasts are buffet style with a selection of fruits, yoghurts, cereals, juices, cold meats and cheeses, pastries, salad and cold fish cuts, hot items including thin sausages, bacon streaky, beans, potato cakes, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, and an omelette bar which also cooks fried and poached eggs. Tea and coffee brought to table by waiters. Lunch is again buffet style offering starter, soup, salad, entree and dessert normally a selection of regional dishes included. Wine/beer or soft drinks included. Dinner is normally waiter serviced except on embarkation night and on concert nights etc, and is normally starter / soup / entree / dessert / tea or coffee. Wine/beer or soft drinks included. Extra course on Captains and Gala dinners. The menu changes daily. Always available for lunch dinner as back up - Rump Steak, Grilled chicken or salmon. Bar The bar offers a wide selection of both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks with waiter/waitress service accept for tea and coffee where a self service machine is found at the back of the lounge bar (you can get drinks here 24/7) - Hot chocolate and herbal teas also available as no tea/coffee facilities in cabins - some guests arrived in nightwear / robe . Bar closes when last person goes to bed. George plays piano and acts as DJ. Team are very friendly managed by Dragonara. Lectures and entertainment also put on here. Only other area is pool / night cinema . Small pool during day and gym with running track on sun deck Excursions Many of the excursions are walking so please make sure in correct pace as I found as cruise not so busy some where to fast with timings not adequate for older guests or those with some mobility issues. Cruise Director / Reception / Staff in General All main staff very helpful and friendly and speak English although room attendant had limited knowledge of English. Cruise director very good.
