This cruise carried on for a second week with approx. 25 guests staying on for the second week. The trip started in Nuremberg and ended in Budapest. We're not regular cruisers and joined friends for their 40th wedding anniversary and his 60th birthday. We were in suite 330, category C and the room was fine (small but manageable). The shower was great (much better than our Azamara experience). We brought our work out clothes but the gym is so small and limited, we only used the bikes/treadmill/rowing machines a couple of times. There's a small number of hand weights available. Perhaps the hair dressing salon could be converted for the addition of a universal gym. There is a wellness person on board and he has stretching, yoga, pilates sessions. We thought the food was good (better than I expected), it's worth booking the chef's table for one night. Service on the ship was good. As with our other cruising experience, we don't find there's enough time at any of the stops to see much. We were disappointed by the size of the groups when we were on tours (had hoped for smaller groups). As with all river cruises you are subject to itin changes due to water levels. We had one afternoon of excursions cancelled as the ship had to move due to water levels. One other excursion was cut short & we had a longer bus ride due to the ship moving. Overall our itin was minimally impacted by water levels. The companies are not that forthcoming about this - it's interesting to experience. The cruise director Kata was excellent. AMA is not the least expensive option on the river, we felt all beverages should be included, at an absolute minimum non-alcoholic drinks should be complimentary. This was our third cruise and this trip confirmed for us that we are unlikely to cruise again (at least until we're much older and less inclined to be DIY travelers). Read Less

My 10-days with AMAWaterways in Prague and on the AmaDante were totally wonderful. The suite was extremely comfortable, the food and beverages were exceptional, the staff was incredibly thorough and attentive while remaining almost invisible, and the excursions were well organized and varied. I met so many delightful people and saw incredible historic sites, while enjoying wine and beer tastings, and hikes and exercise. Our tour director provided activities for all levels of ability, and I was glad this included “active” options. Just spending time on the sun deck or in my stateroom with the floor to ceiling windows was great, too. This was officially a “wine cruise” and we had an onboard winemaker who guided us through tastings of the wines from the different regions through which we traveled as well as providing samples from his winery. Combined with the four- course dinners and the other meals (breakfast, late risers parties, lunch, tea, tapas, and late night snacks), it was a true “foodie” delight. I’m already looking forward to the next cruise with AmaWaterways. Read Less

I am getting emotional just reflecting on how good the experience was. The food, the outstanding service, and the staff all exceeded what I expected. As a teacher, It was nice to sit back and forget the worries of teaching, grading papers, and the responsibilities of just being an adult. It appeared that every moment was thought out in detail, and the service was what I think resembled near butler service. I am already thinking of planning another cruise next year. For anybody thinking about taking a river cruise, don't give it a second thought and book. I traveled with my life long partner, and we've been together for 30 years. There were other couples of the same sex, and we were all accepted and treated as one of the family by the staff and cruise members. What an experience to last a lifetime! Oh, a thank you card from them arrived today. Read Less

We chose this cruise on the recommendation of our travel agent. He is well traveled and told us this line was the best. We have been on many ocean cruises but the river cruise is better. We loved every moment. The staff is amazing. Our favorite bartender was Misha. We loved seeing her every day. She was always smiling and kept us smiling too. Nothing is too much to ask. The food is gourmet at every meal and again the staff makes every meal memorable. The cruise director was everywhere. I don’t remember any cruise director from other cruises but Florentin is in forgettable. He made sure everything was perfect. I had the best massage ever thanks to Rumena who was wonderful. Each port of entry had at least thee choices and we enjoyed each place. The weather was terrible but we still had a great time. We would choose this line again. Read Less

A couple of friends had sailed AmaWaterways and were very happy with their experience. Our travel agent had also sailed on this cruise and said it was good. Raul (the captain) was kind enough to show us around the navigation bridge and explained how the ship worked. Raul (the cruise director) was ALWAYS engaging and kept us informed several times per day. Unfortunately, one of the locks broke on the Rhine river so we were delayed and missed a couple of shore excursions, but we still had a great time. They made it work. We traveled with our adult son and his wife, who is pregnant so this was an opportunity to travel with them before they have the baby. We were concerned that the age demographic would be too old, but it wasn't the case. There were people on board from 15 - 85 and several in their 40's. Read Less

Where do I start, from the time we stepped onto the AmaDante till the time we left we could not have asked for a better time on this ship. The Captain Raul did a great job maneuvering the ship and has an excellent staff. The cruise manager also named Raul was awesome. He managed all the excursions and everything could not have gone any smoother. My spouse cannot walk very fast and he would walk behind sometimes to keep him company which was greatly appreciated. Raul was with us from start to end as our trip started in Prague and ending in Paris. If you read this review Raul thank you for all you do and did for me and my spouse to make this trip really special. And thanks to the AmaWaterways AmaDante family for making our trip so very special from dining with the Captain to our anniversary celebration with cake and music, to the warm towels when we came back from excursions and flavored teas when it was cold outside and a few times raining. Let me now say a few words about the meals OMG the food, the cheeses, the breads, deserts, entrees all so wonderful, thank you maître d Edward for making it possible to get a lunch meal also available for dinner (suckling pig)! Now I cannot finish before saying something about the ships hotel manager Zhivko such a very nice, funny guy we we all enjoyed on the cruise. If you are thinking about going on a river cruise please consider AmaWaterways for your next cruise you will not be disappointed, they try and make it a wonderful, unforgettable cruise from the food, service, excursions, on ship entertainment to all the amenities they offer. This ship line had received great reviews. The trip was absolutely wonderful. Everyone who takes these cruises knows about the low water problem with Europe's rivers. The Captain and the crew of our trip managed to take us everywhere we were scheduled to go with no service disruption or problems presented to us. We had a Cruise manager, Camille, who seemed to be everywhere! She handled so many things that if a problem arose, she took care of it before we were even aware of it! Even with that, she did not "hover" over our group but helped us experience the unique value oil this cruise and the places we visited, providing plenty of time for our own discovery. She was absolutely delightful as were the Captain, Justyan, the Hotel Manager, Cristian and the rest of the crew! They were excellent! This is certainly the way to visit the great cities of Europe. The food was great and plentiful as was the wine and other beverages. The accommodations were great. The local guides were very good and were very helpful to us in enjoying the unique areas of each town and city we visited. We also had plenty of time to discover on our own and had a variety of ways to do that arranged by our Cruise Manager I would recommend this line, AMA Waterways, to anyone that wants to take a river cruise. We certainly will be back! In my view, this is the very best way to experience these historic places in the world. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the reputation of the company, the destinations (Danube and Christmas Markets) and for the romantic time of year. We were welcomed with champagne and a toast by our Captain. We met our outstanding Cruise Director, Sebastian Leroy, and the fun began! Sebastian is professional, considerate, attentive to detail, hardworking, and funny! Our ship was clean, lovely, and welcoming. It was easy to get around the ship and enjoy the different amenities. The crew were warm and friendly. They made you feel like you are special, even though you know that six hours ago they said "goodbye" to the last ship full of guests. I did not bring work out clothes so missed the excellent fitness classes (stretch, core, balance were all held indoors due to cold weather) so learn from my mistake and take work out clothes. Laundry facilities are excellent (no dry cleaning) with a 24 hour turn around. For dining, we enjoyed local specialties at each port and there was always a selection of favorites (steak, chicken, cheeseburgers) for those who did not want the local cuisine. Buffets for breakfast and lunch were lavish with lots of options. Beware those who are trying to cut carbs: this is going to be difficult! The breads, cinnamon rolls and desserts are very tempting! (And worth every bite...you'll walk it off!) Service was excellent and the wait staff quickly learns your preferences. Shore excursions were well thought out+ and local guides provided insights that helped you understand the cultural differences of the county you were visiting. A big thank you to the Cruise Director and Captain that scrambled to adapt our itinerary to accommodate the low water levels of the Danube. They more than made up one missed port with additional destinations that met and exceeded our expectations. I know our Cruise Director had to work extra hard to schedule buses and guides to adapt our schedule. Disembarkation was a masterful plan that was well organized by Sebastian. We were impressed with his attention to detail. As busy as it was he saw every guest off to their taxi, or bus. A warm hug and/or handshake sent us on our way to our next adventure. In summary, I highly recommend AMA Waterways and the Magical Christmas Markets adventure! Read Less

We chose this cruise based on the recommendation of our cruise agent and the itinerary (we really wanted to visit Prague). We have been on almost a dozen ocean cruises prior to this adventure. The ship was clean and had a minimal draft. This was important because it allowed us to cruise the Danube while several other lines could not. We could not start in Nuremberg as planned due to low water levels in the Main-Danube Canal. The first two stops were wiped out but AMA did everything they could to find alternate stops for us. They also offered a complimentary tour of Salzburg. Dejan, our cruise director, kept us as updated on river levels as he could. He was a tireless worker and seemed to be at his desk or on a tour bus all the time. His enthusiasm was contagious. Minor negative comments - my wife had two wine choices at every meal. I had hoped to experience German and Czech beers as well. There were only five beers offered; one gluten free, another was alcohol free and a third I can buy in Canada (and don't like it here). On board entertainment - AMA brought on some great performers during our cruise. However, at every show guests decided to speak at full volume around the bar or just behind it. I turned around once and asked them to allow us to listen to the performance. They glared at me, moved to the next table, and then spoke even louder. Dejan had appealed for us to appreciate the entertainers. I wish everyone had listened. There is a note in the cabin washrooms about water conservation. We hung up our towels on the racks every day but still got fresh towels. I thought about hiding the towels but we would have probably have just had double left. Either take the sign down or respect the guests' wishes. The excursions were mostly well done, well presented and informative. Our guide for Salzburg spoke about the Sound of Music as if we had all seen it the previous week. Our guide in Grein (an alternative stop) rambled on a bit too much. The food, for the most part, was excellent. My wife and I both felt that we directed too quickly to the buffets at breakfast and lunch. We preferred to order off the menu. Embarking and disembarking were smooth and easy. Highlights - sitting on the upper deck floating through the Wachau Valley watching the wineries and castles go by. "Shoes on the Danube" display - tragic and moving. The bike tour in Vienna was enjoyable and just the right amount of exercise. Would we do another river cruise? Not sure. After a while, the castles/cathedrals/churches all seem to look alike. We have nothing to compare AMA to as far as river cruises go, but we did not feel "wowed". But even as I write this, I cannot give any specific examples as what they could have done to "wow" us. Maybe the amount of money you pay for a river cruise is justified in the peace and lack of hassles we had. Read Less

This cruise exceeded my expectations! The staff and crew were fabulous, especially Nick Hartog, our cruise manager. Our cabin was amazing, and our housekeeper (Vlad) kept it immaculate. Service in the dining room was attentive and kind. Everything went smoothly--even when river water levels were low and we had to make some adjustments to sail the Rhine River Gorge. I am not a lover of guided tours, and I often find the guides on trips like this to be a bit boorish and sometimes sexist in their remarks. We had a couple guides who disappointed, but a few who were great. I enjoy going off on my own more often--especially to the beer destinations for our beer tours. (Breweries and bars were great fun with our group!) I appreciated the healthy and vegetarian options in the dining room, but would suggest that you allow more of a cross-over here by designing healthy vegetarian. (i.e.: fewer carbs and better protein choices.) Read Less

We had previously taken an AMA river cruise on the Rhine from Switzerland to Amsterdam and found it wonderful, so decided to take another the Danube. We were actually on the same ship, AMACerto which is very nice. We had a great crew. Our Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, the Captain and crew provided us with wonderful service, great cuisine, safety, and comfort on our stay. This wonderful group of people worked beyond expectation to ensure that all guests were treated with exceptional courtesy, professionalism, and service. Please understand that the crew had nothing to do with the problems we encountered, and in fact, did everything possible to help ensure that our onboard experience went as smoothly as possible. Our concern, is only with upper levels of AMA Waterways management and their lack of transparency about communicating river level problems. After being told, we did our own research to better understand the problem. It was extremely disappointing to read an article published in Travel Weekly dated August 1st (two months prior to our cruise) quoting the President of AMA that the river levels were known to be low and causing diversions from scheduled itineraries. Cruise guests weren’t made aware of these problems until just prior to our departure from Prague. The resulting low water levels allowed us only two days of actual cruising on the Danube. Our first cruising day on the river was from Vilshofen to Passau and Linz on October 9th. The second cruising day was from Linz to Melk and Vienna on October 10th. Once again, we weren’t notified about the low waters down-stream until we arrived in Vienna. This again would interrupt our expected final leg to Budapest. AMA management obviously knew of these problems at least two months prior to our cruise. Had we been aware of this in a timely fashion, we could have opted to either cancel or postpone our trip to a different time. Obviously, AMA management used the tactic of keeping cruising guests in the dark and “dropping the news” on everyone just prior to our planned departures, both in Prague and Vienna. This we feel was deceptive on the part of AMA Waterways management. Cruise guests were bussed from Prague via Pilzen to Vilshofen rather than Nuremberg. The two and a half hour stop in Pilzen was very marginal. We had hoped to visit the Pilzen brewery, but it was packed with Germans celebrating the last days of Oktoberfest which excluded AMA guests any opportunity to tour. Our out-of-pocket lunch stop allowed limited choices, and the only excursion options in Pilzen were a loud band in the square that was of no interest to AMA guests, and a beer garden that opened just as it was time to depart. The stop did, however, provide us with a bathroom break. Vilshofen was a very pleasant town. For those who desired to see Nuremberg, guests were required to take a long, tiring bus trip providing minimal time in the city, and then back to Vilshofen. The option of visiting Regensberg was the same issue with another long bus ride. We opted to take a shorter excursion for a walking tour through the charming village of Scharding. Our only highlight in Vienna was a very nice Strauss/Mozart concert, again paid out of pocket. The Vienna city tour was an overly fast and somewhat confusing bus excursion, after which, we were left on our own on a shopping street. On Saturday, October 13, we disembarked AMACerto in Vienna and were bussed to the Budapest Sofitel Chain Bridge Hotel. This bus trip was long and unfortunately without a pitstop. When we arrived at the hotel, there was a rudimentary reception for AMA guests with mediocre food and drinks. Immediately after, the AMA concierge team seemed to disappear and was unavailable to aid guests for the remainder of our stay or provide guidance about transportation to the airport. To complete our extra days in Budapest, we, and another AMA couple, arranged our own in-town excursions. We hired a driver and guide for a very nice city tour and arranged for an evening illumination cruise. Both of these were scheduled to occur as part of our cruise package that we didn’t receive. This was disappointing because we all incurred additional unplanned out-of-pocket expenses. After returning home, our travel agent, called us and forwarded AMA’s letter of apology, with an offer of credit on future cruises. This may seem generous on the part of AMA Waterways management, but it doesn’t help those of us who will not be considering future AMA cruises. Read Less

I booked my first Ama cruise because they offer bike tours for no additional fee. This year, they have added a fitness program on some ships and, hope to have instructors on all ships next year. The river cruise market is changing. Ama is expanding their programs to include more activity levels. They offer gentle, average and active walking speeds and bike tours. They also make the bikes available for individual rides. The other big positive for me is freedom. When I explained that I prefer to "do my own thing" they went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable. I said I didn't want a big meal in the evening and they brought a large dinner salad as an entree. Cheese and fruit were available on the buffet table so I could have my favourite - herb cheese, dates and olives - as an appetiser or dessert. All three of my cruises on Ama have had other singles onboard, a few multi-generational families and friends sharing a cabin. I also like the mix of nationalities. Passengers are not just Americans. Canada, Norway, Spain, Hong Kong are the countries I remember. Thru the end of September, they are running a special that includes airfare so check their website if you're considering booking. And, no I don't work for them. Read Less

We chose this cruise and AMA Waterways because it worked well with our schedule. Friends recommended AMA Waterways and we were not disappointed, other than the fact that the Amadante is the oldest ship in their fleet, and it showed. This was our third river cruise, so we were able to compare it with ships from a different cruise line, that were new. The service was excellent, staff very friendly, cruise director, Raul, was amazing. The excursions were varied and offered enough choices for everyone's liking. Because of the heat, we did not take advantage of the on-board bikes, but we would have otherwise. It is a nice amenity to have. Food was very good, and the Chef's Table was excellent. The only negatives were the fact that we were only allowed to use the upper deck with its raised canopy when the ship was docked. Mind you, we went through a lot of locks, so that was understandable, but once we got on the Rhine river, and there were less locks, we still were not allowed to sit under the canopy, and with the hot weather, no one wanted to sit in the sun. The other negative was the wine group that was invited on board for the wine tastings, were from California. So, instead of tasting wines from the region, we were tasting wines from their vineyards. All in all, it was a very enjoyable cruise. Read Less

I was part of an alumni group of 19 people who sailed together. The pre-cruise package in Prague was attended by all but two of our participants. That add-on was worth it and the quality of the Prague Intercontinental Hotel and Czech Republic tours was well worth it. The water level on the Danube was low so we were not able to embarkation was moved from Nuremberg to Vilshofen. The embarkation process was very well organized. Our cruise manager did a great job in organizing similar if not identical experiences. By Tuesday, we were back to a normal schedule. Dining (including wine and food) was top notch. I found the dining room staff to be very hospitable and the food (both from the buffet and from the menu) was delicious and offered enough assortments to keep the experience feeling fresh. Sign up for the optional Chef's Table experience -- we loved our dinner in the special dining room. The staff on the entire ship was excellent -- genuine smiles, great customer service, and a commitment to making sure that everyone had a top-notch experience. We have river cruised twice previously (Rhine and Rhone) on another river cruise line and were just looking for a change. Our Travel Agent recommended AMAWaterways based on the excellent reviews and feedback she had received from previous clients. We trained from Frankfurt to Nuremburg and traveling in 1st class with large suitcases is no picnic, since there wasn't anywhere to store the larger suitcases. We arrived early on the AMACERTO and was actually greeted by the Captain, who arranged to have our suitcases taken onboard. We were ready to party, but unfortunately, we had to buy out own beverages (we expected beer or wine since it was lunch). Our party of four then bought five bottles of wine to get the week started. The cabin was ready early and our was in excellent shape ( with balcony on the 3rd deck). Our room was serviced at least twice a day and the AC worked great. Dining throughout the cruise was above expectations and the service was excellent. Entertainment was "not so good"..... piano player who had a tough time adjusting to a party group. Entertainment brought onboard was very good and we wish there would have been more than just two nights of them. The ports and tours were very good...… no complaints about anything. We enjoyed and appreciated the change to listen to the captain while in the bridge and cruising down the Danube. I would recommend AMA Waterways to anyone...… Read Less

My wife and I have done around 25 cruises. We have never had the level of service provided on this cruise. We spent a few nights in Prague before boarding the ship. Highly recommend doing this. Its a beautiful city. We also added days at the end in Budapest. Very nice cities. The tours that AmaWaterways provided in both cities were very helpful in orienting us to the city. Plus the tours had great local guides. The hotels were top notch on great locations. This ship was not crowded. Plenty of room on the deck, restaurant or lounge. Very relaxing. My wife and I went alone. So we sat with others to eat or relax. Even tho this is not normally my thing it worked very well on this trip. The included wine may have helped . Met a lot of great people from many places around the world. The food provided at lunch was local a number of times. German food when we were in Germany goulash in Hungary ETC. very good. Dinner was high end and very good. The service was great. Very accommodating and very well trained. The room was laid out well, the bath and shower was nice. and we had no issues. If you don't want to walk as far request a room towards the lounge area. You will save a few steps. The ports were really nice and the local guides were great. If you are comparing to other ships consider this fact. The tour guides were very good. The quiet vox listening device is in your cabin to use on tours. This is really nice because you can hear even when you stop to take photos. Kudos to Roxy, Carman, Pasquel and Christian. Only names I can remember. The entire staff was great. Our room 324 was made up perfect every time. We wanted for nothing. With Christian managing the cruise and PasqueI managing the house everything was just right.I could do a review on these 2 they are that good. I didn't even mention the nighttime light tour in Budapest. Oh my. Just book it. Read Less

My husband and I choose this cruise because of its availabilty early in the river cruising season. In April we would rather deal with the weather (which was surprisingly spectacular for this cruise) then crowds later in the season. We had been on a AMA cruise in Portugal last year and loved it. One of the issues that arises when you take a cruise early in the season is a staff that has not worked together or is inexperienced. The cruise director on this cruise falls into thist catagory and thus impacted our experience. Often there seemed to be confusion as shore excursions were organized. Our bus left 4 people at a church and did not realize it for many miles later. Our paid excusion had more people on it then they had accounted for. Many times the cruise director was on our bus, and interacted rarely with the people around her. One shore excursion which had groups going to the same places we were on a bus with 10 people and the other bus had 25, which made no sense. On the last day of the cruise, all of the afternoon shore excursions were to return at 5:30PM, while a special music presentation in the lounge was to begin at 5:00PM. This made no sense. One pleasant surprise was that during Happy Hour there was a special cocktail each day that was complimentary in additon to wine, beer and other mixed drinks. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to please. We have cruised many times before, but never have I seen the Captain present and as this one. We did not realize that because there were 56 locks to go through between Nuremburg and Luxembourg that the sun deck would have to be down most of the time. There were also low bridges that caused this. Thus, not able to enjoy the early warm spring weather from the top. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise and would chose AMA again in the future. Read Less

Our family of eight (3 generations) traveled with AmaWaterways from Nuremberg to Budapest, visiting Christmas markets in Germany, Austria and Hungary along the way. Embarkation was quick and pleasant. We were greeted when we arrived and shown directly to our stateroom. Our luggage soon followed. After settling in we attended the Welcome Cocktail Party, safety briefing and dinner. The Ship: The public spaces include a large comfortable lounge with access to a small deck, two dining rooms, a large sundeck with a fitness track and pool, a fitness room and a massage & hair salon. An elevator provides access to all but the sun deck. Internet is available throughout. Dining: Incredible! Breakfast and lunch were primarily buffet, with several kitchen prepared options. Early risers could also get a light breakfast in the lounge. Dinners were gourmet, multi-course meals offering several options and often featuring regional specialties. We had 3 children in our party and the kitchen made a special effort to provide kid friendly food for them. Service: Excellent. The crew went out of their way to assure that our needs were met. Ports & Shore Excursions: As this was a Christmas Market cruise, most of the excursions included visiting Christmas markets at each port. A market highlight was at the Thurn und Taxis Castle in Regensburg. Each day's activities were offered for a variety of fitness and ability levels, from gentle walkers to hiking and bicycling. Most of the local guides were very knowledgeable, personable and spoke excellent English. My husband and I attended an optional Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna and really enjoyed it. We had a wide range of ages and interests in our party, which ranged from 10 years old to 72. We all had a wonderful time and were able to break apart and come back together with ease. (Grandma and Grandpa liked the "gentle walkers" group while the kids were more energetic!) Disembarkation was well organized. Although we were asked to vacate our cabins by 9 a.m., we were comfortable in the lobby until our transportation for the next leg of our journey arrived. Read Less

AmaWaterways was our second choice when we discovered Viking had booked up this particular Danube Cruise. Our experience up to this point has been 2 ocean cruises on Viking and both experiences were 5 star. We were not sure we would even like a river cruise much less go with a cruise line we had never heard of before. Our adventure on AmaStella was above and beyond our expectations! River cruising is definitely a different experience than ocean. Our ocean cruise carried approx. 800 and I believe our river cruise had somewhere around 135. That in itself changes every aspect. I cannot say that i even prefer one to the other...now I know they are each simply unique. Also unique to this particular cruise is the atmosphere on ship. The entire ship is decorated for Christmas - so lovely, sparkling and festive. One night we even helped decorate some of the trees that only had the lights trimmed. The crew provided us with entertainment one evening by "caroling". Absolutely hysterical !!!! And of course the emphasis of the excursions was on the Christmas markets in each port. Excursions: Cannot say enough about quality of tour guides, tour buses used, itinerary, etc. Again, this cruise had a special theme so no doubt excursions in the same towns and cities another time of the year are going to differ. AmaWaterways provides an incredible choice of INCLUDED excursions - high quality ones in fact. Sometimes there was one offered for those who just wanted to visit the Christmas Market and perhaps drive through the town seeing points of interest, while offered at the same port was an excursion that included walking and exploring interiors of points of interest and adding the market at the end. In Passau, there were several of included choices, one of which a 2 hour ride into Salzburg and the opportunity to spend approximately 5 hours exploring Salzburg either independently or with a guide and then the return to the ship through the gorgeous snow covered mountains to Linz where the ship had sailed while we were in Salzburg. That excursion was a no-charge. Amazing. A wonderful aspect of Ama excursions is that for almost every one, they provided an option for 2-3 levels of "walkers"...gentle, normal, active. Each level was given their own guide. Again, we found this to be ever so accommodating. Cabin: We had a room with a balcony and french balcony and it was fairly roomy. Even though we rarely used the balcony due to weather, it did provide us with more space in the actual room. Be aware that there is not a lot of useable space underneath the bed for storing actual suitcases that are very deep. Fabulous that they provide a TV that is also a computer with a keyboard. You can pull up your boarding passes for your flight home and it will print directly to the Cruise Director's printer. Same thing for tickets to concerts or whatever extra you might have booked separate from what Ama was offering. Bathroom is decent size and very bright and "new". Beds were comfortable enough. We were well taken care of by the sweet young man in charge of our room - he anticipated our every need. Dining: I rarely eat breakfast but when I was ready mid morning, I could grab a cappuccino from the machine (love!!) and a pastry from the restaurant buffet. We were rarely on the ship during lunch. Dinner was always very good but the best meal we had onboard was definitely at the Chef's Table. And just a tip: one meal at Chef's Table is included, however if you check, there most likely will be another night that they are not booked and you can enjoy a second meal there. Worth checking on! This is the only area that i prefer the ocean over the river cruise. Some nights, we were looking forward to spending at a table with others (no tables for 2) getting to know them and having a very social dinner but most nights we were tired from the day's excursions and would have preferred being able to go to dinner when we wanted, self serve a few items from a buffet, sit just the two of us and spend much less than 2 hours on dinner. That's just a personal preference and it was obvious that most other cruisers wholeheartedly embraced the "dinner experience". We are not wine drinkers so that may be some of the lure and enjoyment for some at dinner and would cause them to want to linger. Just not for us. The Ama Cruise Director for our ship was John Riley and we cannot even come up with words worthy enough to describe this man. How he does it...we just cannot fathom. His attention to detail and organization is just short of being physically and mentally impossible. He lacks in absolutely nothing (unless it's sleep)!! We are certain that our delightful experience on AmaStella can be attributed to his talents and his ability to inspire those who are working with him. He spoils you. Our plane out of Budapest did not depart until 2:00 in the afternoon yet we needed to be out of our cabin by 9:00. We were so warmly encouraged and welcomed to stay in the lounge of the ship by John until we needed to get to the airport. Despite the crew trying to get ready for the next batch of cruisers who were set to arrive at any time, again we were urged to stay onboard and partake of the food being set out for the new group and remain comfortable until it was time to leave. Oh and one most lovely thing...those who were needing taxi service to the airport that day...John personally arranged for a taxi driver to appear at the dock for every single cruiser that needed it and for every single time they needed to depart. We all waited in the lounge and he would announce when each of our taxis had arrived, we would walk off and there were our bags being loaded by the driver. We were the next to the last couple to leave the ship and the entire time we were made to feel more than welcome. So from start to finish this was a lovely, very special experience for us. Will we do it again with AmaWaterways? Absolutely!! Read Less

After speaking to numerous people, we selected AMAWaterways for our Christmas Markets on the Danube and couldn't have been more happy that we did. There was nothing that I would change. The accommodations were comfortable. The food was out of this world. The tours were fabulous and tour guides (except Regensburg) were great. And the Cruise Director Christian was wonderful. So to start - we went over early and spent a few days in Prague prior to the pre-cruise with AMA. We did a tour starting at the hotel and going up to Prague Castle. Then walked down to the Christmas Markets. The QuietVox headphone system was great in hearing the tour guide. Only complaint is that for me the earpiece was too big and hurt my ear - but otherwise great. The tour guide gave us plenty of information - but didn't overwhelm us. Then we left Prague on buses to Nuremberg. They had plenty of buses so that not everybody was sitting on top of each other. We had a guide on the bus that gave us lots of information as we traveled from Prague to Nuremberg. Once we reached Nuremberg, we were let off to enjoy some of the Christmas Market and part of the city for a couple of hours while the buses went to the ship and unloaded our luggage. We met the buses and they dropped us off at the ship where we were greated by the staff with champagne. Our luggage was in the rooms already - but we waited in the lounge until our section was called where we went to the front desk, had our picture taken and given our keys to our room. A room steward then took us to our room, explained everything and left us. We unpacked and went to the restaurant for lunch. Evening we met the staff and had a wonderful first night dinner. Meals on the ship were great. Several options and one thing that was nice was they had a list of allergies and each course showed any allergies for that meal so that you could make sure you wouldn't eat something you shouldn't. The staff remembered your allergies and made sure that they took care of you. Our wait person was Stevan and we LOVED him. Also the wine was continuous. You take one drink and he was there filling your glass back up. Same with water or other drinks you had. The room was BB201 and was spacious and comfortable. If you lifted the bed - the luggage would fit under the bed and gave you more room. Plenty of room to hang clothes and shelves to put non-hanging clothes and other things. Free Wi-Fi was nice. Tours - we really loved the tours. We only had one guide that we thought was lacking - the others were full of information and interestingly. Was surprised about how much I learned about each of these sites we visited. Loved the Christmas Markets. I think Thurn and Taxis was our favorite Christmas Market and Salzburg was our favorite city. Embarkation and Disembarkation was smooth. On ship entertainment was great. One night was decorating the Christmas Tree, one night was former members of the Regensburg Boy's Choir who sung for us for about 30-45 minutes which was great. One night the staff entertained us with Christmas Markets and we understand that was a first - but they said they had a blast and we did too. They really got everybody involved. Highlight was the Illumination Cruise in Budapest. It was COLD but breathtaking to go up on the top and see the buildings lit up. Beautiful. As mentioned - I can' say enough good about this cruise line. The staff was great and I would do this in a heart-beat again. Read Less

This was my first river cruise. We joined a group of ladies who wanted to see the Christmas Markets. This has been on my bucket list as long as I can remember, so a good friend and I decided this is the time to go! We flew into Prague for a few nights first (we had both been there before but visiting this beautiful city at this time of year was thrilling.) We enjoyed seeing the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony to set off the season and the seven markets we found. Then we took a bus down to Nuremburg on a lightly snowing day, which added to the ambiance of the holiday season. Boarding the AmaCerto was an easy and quick experience, there were some snacks set up in the public area. We met up with many people that I had met before who had joined this group. To summarize the meals and service (both room and table) for the week was wonderful. Very friendly staff and well organized when we got together to set off at the ports. Some markets were walking distance from the ship and some we needed to take a bus, all were wonderful ports! I cannot say which Christmas Markets were our favorites, as all the cities were so beautifully decorated and each one had a different feel to it. Yes, they basically sell the same things but because the set up and festivities are all individualized, we never got tired of them. Each market sells their own souveniour mug (inexpensive, and if you give it back to them after you finish the gluwein, they will give you the deposit Euros back). Besides Prague and Nuremberg, we saw markets at Regensberg, Vienna, Linz, Melk, Salzburg (special sign-up), and Budapest. We loved the evening cruise down the Danube to see the Parliament all lit up in Budapest, such a beautiful way to end the cruise. The AMA staff, tour director and guides, bus drivers were all great. We had special memories of leaving our shoes out the door one night so that a big chocolate bar was left in each upon waking in the morning, we were surprised with beautiful scarves (for ladies) wrapped in lovely boxes, festive gifts from Santa on our last night when he came on the ship, not to mention being greeted each day upon returning to the ship with a hot towel and gluwein to welcome us back. We stayed a couple of more nights in Budapest on our own before returning back to the states, a very walkable city and one I would like to return one day. All in all, this was one cruise that more than exceeded any of my high expectations. We plan on participating in the Rhine Christmas Markets in 2020...I sure hope I can wait. Loved every second! Oh, meanwhile, my husband and I are going to sail the Rhine and Moselle Fairytales cruise on the AmaPrima in a couple of weeks. I wanted him to experience this river cruise and I know it will be a great time, as well! Read Less

We had such a great time! The staff made it fun! We were treated so well, we were spoiled by the end of the week, and did not want to go home!! We have started planning our next cruise with them! The food was all "fine dining cuisine" with wine pairings from local countries! The shore excursions were all guided by knowledgeable, articulate, enthusiastic people. Cabins were perfect size, clean, had a slider to enjoy the view. We used the exercise room, running track, laundry service, and biking tours all excellent! Several whole-ship champagne toasts throughout the trip and nightly music in lounge. Other nice touches were the ice cream bar one afternoon, coffee machine with lattes, mochas. Great narration on board while we were cruising and passing sites like the continental divide, and Bratislava, What a difference from ocean cruising. This was so enjoyable and relaxing. While we came with a small group of people (7 couples) other travelers on board all socialized together. It was so personal and enjoyable to meet other travelers. We also took advantage of the land cruise in Czech Republic pre-cruise. Hotel was 5 star rated and excellent tour through city of Czech Republic! Everything on this trip was so well organized, well planned, what an amazing time we had!! We will cruise with Ama Waterways again!! Read Less

We actually chose this cruise just on the basis of the itinerary and dates. Having sailed with AMAWaterways, however, we would definitely take another cruise with them based on the outstanding experience we had. We sailed from Nuremberg to Budapest on the beautiful new ship AMAStella, visiting Christmas markets along the way. By the end, we had pretty well exhausted our interest in markets. Luckily, the shore excursions (all accompanied by knowledgeable guides) also included city tours and there were on-board activities related to Christmas as well. The food was unbelievably well done. We were so impressed with the variety and the preparation, as well as the wine service. We traveled with a one-year-old in our group, which could have been a recipe for disaster. Instead, we found we could easily take part in meals and activities, and the crew was welcoming and helpful. In fact, the entire crew was as friendly, professional and helpful as one could wish in all aspects of the trip. Embarkation and disembarkation were also expertly done. In short, we felt we hit almost a home run on our first experience cruising. Our only complaint relates to AMA's business office. When in April 2015 we booked 6 adults for December 2016, we also indicated that we would be bringing a 13-month old child. With 6 reservations on the line, they agreed to allow the infant, but wanted our acknowledgement that they had no support for an infant: no crib, high chair, stroller, car seat, dirty diaper pail, car seat or life vest. We agreed, we would provide our own. A week before the trip we were informed that we should have been charged an almost $1000 supplement for the infant, but they agreed they were a little late on that. But we were also informed that the parents of the infant would have to move from Deck 3 to Deck 1 because Deck 3 cabins had a balcony and the infant could fall overboard, so they would apply the rate reduction for Deck 1 against the supplement and waive the balance. Obviously the "balcony" issue was a pretext (who opens a balcony in December from Nuremberg to Budapest, much less what parent opens the balcony with a 13-month old infant). I talked to another parent who had a somewhat similar experience with a young child on another AMA cruise. Read Less
