I have cruised with NCL a handful of times, and have always been satisfied with the value for your money. This would be my first trip where I don’t feel that way. To be fair, the weather can never be predicted - but other cruises I have been on with inclement weather seemed to have better contingency plans. I haven’t cruised on a ship this small or old before, so I definitely will book any future cruises based more off of the ship vs the dates and destinations. The ship feels very old, and the rough waters during this cruise were unbearable. I never get sea sick, but there were plates flying on the floor in the restaurants and my closet door even swung open and broke off of the hinges due to the turbulence. The power went out in the casino as I walked through, and even some of the crew members called in sick due to extreme conditions. The outside areas of the ship were virtually useless for a majority of the trip, so most events were moved to the crowded Bliss Lounge. There wasn’t a lot of entertainment on the ship, with the exception of Bingo, Deal or No Deal, board games, and a comedian. Many of the locations and activities didn’t have active servers during the events, like most NCL cruises I have been on before. Some areas even had the bars closed during events, making it inconvenient for our travel party. On day 2, my husband booked an eyebrow wax at the spa. We have done this on other NCL cruises, and he gets them at home every 4-6 weeks. The spa employee completely ripped the skin off of the top and bottom of both brows. Either the wax was too hot or the technique was incorrect, but my husband had scabs around his eyes from day 2 through disembarking. We did show the spa manager, and he was very concerned and conceded that it had to have been a technique issue. He refunded the service, but my husband was forced to wear sunglasses for the remainder of the trip to cover the bloody scabs around his eyes. The dining was very limited compared to the other ships I have been on (even the staple Garden Cafe seemed to rotate hamburgers and hot dogs every day, and lacked variety). We went to the Sports Bar late one evening, and waited 20 minutes without being served, so we left and ordered room service. We dined as a large group at the Four Seasons a couple of times, and the service and food there was great. We brought 16 people, and a few of them were first time cruisers. I kept reassuring them that this wasn’t normal, but I felt bad that their first experiences had so many issues. The crew did a decent job, but many of them were noticeably off of their game due to the conditions. Dave (Trippong) P at guest services was very helpful. I had to visit the desk nightly to get sea sickness medicine. I’m hoping that this trip was a fluke, because NCL has been my preferred cruise line the past 4-5 years, but I definitely won’t go on the Sun ever again. My family is still worn out and seasick a day later. *I hadn’t cruised from Port Canaveral before, and the embarking/disembarking process was the easiest I’ve ever experienced. Read Less

I know that my title for the review seems bad but it’s a good thing! Look, there’s no beating around the bush. The Norwegian Sun is an older ship- it’s from 2001 so compared to these new mega ships with water parks, ice skating, parks, and even go kart tracks- it’s hard to match up. But this ship is an excellent small to midsize ship. This ship is great if you are 1. A first time cruiser 2. On a budget like me 3. You just like the simple things about cruising. Despite not having the crazy amenities that the newer ships have, this ship still feels like your average cruise with non stop activities, modern and updated lounged and restaurants, and overall great service. Some staff members seemed to care less to be there with the majority was wonderful, patient, and kind. Many of the staff were friendly and took time to socialize with us a bit more than I’m used to which was great- especially the cruise director! He seemed to know most of the guests names including ours. The majority of the crew really do seem to care. Getting on the ship was by far the fastest, most simple process I’ve ever been a part of not just for cruising but for any type of major travel. All in all from the type we got dropped off by our family to the time we stepped foot onto the boat, it took less than 15 minutes maybe even 10. Despite crummy weather in Canaveral on day one, we had a nice time and the drinks were flowing! Quite a mixed crowd but mostly middle aged couples or elderly with some families or young couples here or there. We were definitely one of the youngest couples on the ship (24 and 21 year old males.) but we loved befriending many of our fellow passengers regardless of their age and we felt everyone was nice and up for a good time. The food is overall great! Some dishes were okay while others were outstanding. We did eat at 2 of the speciality dining venues Moderno and Los Lobos. Both were fairly good for the price and I don’t regret spending the extra money especially since service was outstanding at both. The ship feels somewhat small once you’ve gotten the hang of it but I sort of liked this. Perfect for a 4-5 day cruise. I didn’t like the way much of the decks were laid out compared to other ships but Just a small complaint. For example- to get across deck 6 you has to go through Bliss Lounge which took up the entirety of the deck and after certain times it’s adults only club. I feel as though Norwegians decks seem to have odd layouts compared to the competition but nothing that ruins your day lol. This isn’t the most amazing or best ship- but it certainly gets the job done. We had a great time on our budget vacation and got a killer deal with drinks included. I would travel on Norwegian again but maybe next time on a new ship to try something different! Read Less

Read very carefully your freestyle, it's not free! That was just the start. i was told by my sister, who has cruised norwegian. This was better food, better class of people, better service. Four cruised my sister brother in law, wife and i. 10-20 cruises between us. The ship the sun! Very Nice, Smaller class. No adult area, but very few kids. The Crew, Very polite, With the exceptions of bar crew. my bar bills were all over the map For the same drink, (long island) even on the day it was the drink of the day! Daily drink package was in in excess of $1140.00 per person. Overheard on person watching the bar staff and complained she paid for top shelf! And was getting bottom. Room! Great, balcony, clean great room service. Food! Buffet was great, main courses not so much. Veil sausage cold gross! Chicken tough and chewy. We opted not to eat most main dishes. Rib meat on noodles, looked like beef stroganoff. Coffee! Let's just say (Coffee on cruise`s aint good) Casino!!!!!!!!!!! Bad dealers!!! Lets just say wow!!!! Small, smoky, high minimums. I personally had to stop the play on the roulette table, have the pit boss called and reviewed the last play. Which i was paid for later. I was watching three card poker, not playing! Watched the dealers not knowing how to pay, exposing players cards by moving other cards, not! At all to rules! Entertainment!!! What entertainment? A (one two shows family/adult) kids could have stayed for the adult show. Comedian (It was funnier on the pool deck watching the drunks) Next was a Juggler and joke teller (can you say County Fair) The last evening was the show by the ncl team it was good. Read Less

We have always loved Norwegian Cruise Lines and its super friendly/entertaining atmosphere and staff before this last cruise we just took in December on the Norwegian Sun. However, after this cruise my family and I just took we were all highly disappointed with our cruising experience. While there were some positive aspects of our vacation, such as the photography services and the friendly staff that helped us choose and buy our family photos taken onboard, the disappointing aspects of our experience outweighed the positive aspects. Firstly, our dining experience onboard was subpar at best. When we would go to the Garden Cafe for a meal, there were not many options and variety available to choose from and eat. Especially with our family being vegetarian, finding options and options that were tasty were pretty difficult; this is true in the complimentary restaurants as well. Our family even went to the specialty Mexican restaurant Los Lobos; however our family could only choose and eat 1 entree because it was the only vegetarian option (even the rice and beans had meat in them!). Secondly, the staff was noticeably less visible and friendly on this cruise compared to our last two cruises, for example our cruise director Jamie only introduced the first show and only hosted one event (the Newlywed Game Show) and we did not see or hear of her at all for the rest of the cruise. Our housekeeping staff was also not too friendly, even rudely telling my sister and I that we have to leave the room within 10 minutes so they can clean it (the housekeepers waited outside the cabin door knocking for us to leave). Another experience with rude staff was in the Garden Cafe, I was apparently blocking the plate stack while I was serving myself some food and the worker was tapping his foot behind me and gave me an attitude to move over so he could put more plates on the stack, even though it had only been a couple seconds that I was standing there. Lastly, the entertainment felt lazy and unimaginative. All the game shows and events were exactly the same from our past NCL cruises and nothing felt innovative or exciting. Also, the biggest disappointment with the entertainment was that most of the “fun” events were for additional fees, which seems very greedy and vicious from NCL seeing as though everyone has already spend a hefty amount of money to already be on the cruise. It was the constant additional fees and the constant selling/advertising that made me lose most of my respect for NCL and its ethics, they don't seem genuine anymore and it seems that all the company wants to do is suck their consumers out of as much money as they can. Overall, my family and I had a pretty subpar/bad experience this time around on NCL even though we have been loyal to them in the past and are Latitudes Rewards members. I am unsure of if we will choose NCL again for our future cruises after this last experience. Read Less

Had issues on day one and they just haunted my girlfriend and I throughout our trip. A paid for drink package, that we had ample proof of.( email from NCL and our itemized reservation.) Couldn’t get it on our room card at the check in, computer issues were blamed and we were told to see Guest Services once onboard the ship. Here’s where it starts to unravel, gentleman we dealt with was virtually a recording. He disputed the email, from NCL Sr. VP Passenger Services. As our itemized reservation wasn’t enough proof of our claims. Finally after having all his ridiculous and vague questions answered, we got the “We can do nothing on the ship, it must come from the office” on a loop from him. Literally his response to us for the next 5 minutes. We decide to purchase the package AGAIN to avoid paying exorbitant prices for beverages on our vacation. After wasting 4 hours waiting to hear from “The Office”. We head back to Guest Services and miraculously our package was already on our reservation! A Christmas miracle! The attendant asked us why we purchased onboard, a package we already had... we had to tell the ridiculous story for a third time since check in at port. We thought the worst was behind us and we began to enjoy our vacation. Until we were greeted by some of the worst bar staff I’ve ever encountered. I don’t think they served me what I ordered until the third different bar we visited. The language barrier was ridiculous for any guest service position. It’s very frustrating to get blank stares and “ok sure” after simple questions. 2 different areas we visited failed to open at posted hours. The response we were given was, “It open when it open” in the worst broken accent you can think up. All in all, there were some great crew members who salvaged my vacation. However, they’re far outnumbered by staff who are either poorly trained or just don’t care. That’s a good overview of the negatives, I’d like to touch now on some of the positives. We found the food offerings truly awesome, dinners were fantastic, the buffet was wonderful! Our room was quite spacious and had a great view. The people watching on a 4 day “booze cruise” is some of the best entertainment you’ll find aboard. Great stirrup cay is just Ok in my opinion. It’s crowded and was like any other weekend at the beach. This was my first cruise and my GF’s fourth. Neither of us want to get back on the sun! Read Less

This was my first time ever on a cruise and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. I’ll start by saying the staff on the sun were absolutely amazing and extremely helpful. Not only did the staff do an amazing job, but they made us feel at home and went beyond their job titles to make everyone feel welcome and special. Our room was amazing and extremely clean everyday. Very thankful for our housekeeper. We ate dinner every night at the Seven Seas and it was absolutely amazing. The menu was amazing and there were endless possibilities for dinner. We celebrated two birthdays on board and they were amazing thanks to everyone who took part in the experience. All of the staff in each lounge were very helpful and made sure we had the best experiences possible. Jamie the cruise director was amazing at her job and coordinated a great trip with so many great things to do on board. Definitely enjoyed everyday out on the islands. Everything was great from getting off the boat to the beech and even back on board . The private island exceeded my expectations with the cleanliness and fun atmosphere. Also very thankful for Irma and her advice on how to shop in Nassau. With her help we were able to find many great gifts to bring back home and enjoy. I took part in the stingray city excursion on November 8th and it was by far the most fun I’ve ever had. Our guide Miguel was super nice and made sure to make our experience far more than just taking photos with the rays. I would highly recommend traveling with Norwegian Cruise Line to anyone looking for a get away. I most definitely will be looking back into traveling with Norwegian again in the future. Thank you so much for the great staff and the unforgettable memories made! Read Less

The ship was beautiful and clean and everyone we met were super friendly and helpful. The cabin, was beautiful and clean and surprisingly spacious. The food selection was really good and plentiful. The entertainment was also very good with a good selection for all tastes. There were plenty of quiet areas on the ship too if you wanted to just get away and relax. All the crew from the minute we were checking in to the very last minute when we left were so helpful and kind and friendly, they all made us feel very special and as if we were the only people they were dealing with. We were very underwhelmed by our cruise. We had a balcony room towards the front of the ship. The room was clean, but nothing spectacular. The TV channels were almost non existent, we had 2 movie channels and 1 sitcom channel, the other few channels were related to the cruise. The beverage staff was slow and constantly forgot your drinks. There was little to no entertainment on the ship. The smoking section was so small there was never enough seats for everyone to sit. Additionally, you weren’t allowed to smoke at the bar that was located in the smoking section. Food was mediocre and the service one night at the four seasons was horrendous. We were there for almost two hours after being seated and it wasn’t because we couldn’t decide what we wanted to eat or drink, it was because our server kept disappearing. I will definitely not be going back on a Norwegian Cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise so we weren’t sure what to expect, but now I can say I will only cruise norwegian for vacations from here forward. Getting on the ship was so easy and took about 10 minutes from checking in to walking aboard. Our stateroom was perfect ( we had an ocean view). It had 2 twin beds and a pull out couch. Being able to chose when and where we ate was so important to us because some days we were busier than others and we got to fit eating times into our schedule. The food was amazing and there were so many options to chose from. Each crew member we encounter was so kind and made sure we were having a great time. Harold (one of the bartenders) even remembered my name and drink order. We were a little worried with a day at sea that we would get cabin fever but they planned activities out so well that the day flew by! The ports were so beautiful and made me never want to leave. I will definitely be cruising with norwegian hopefully soon! Read Less

Overall the cruise was a huge failure. DON'T STAY IN AFT FACING ROOMS. THE SHIPS ENGINE FUMES RAIN DOWN ON THE BALCONY. CANCER CAUSING FUMES AND SOOT FEEL IN MY COFFEE AND I DRANK IT. The staff is clearly aware of the problem and said they usually clean it at the end of the trip. They were great and said this time they would clean it daily but said that's not normally what they are told to do. Norwegian makes them leave it there if no one complains. I'm disgusted Norwegian can get away with this. It's a safety hazard for crew, staff and guests. I HAVE A SAMPLE OF IT AND WILL BE SENDING IT OUT FOR TESTING. I'll be contacting the company with complaints shortly. In the 20 years this ship has been out I can't believe they didn't fix this. Disgusting. I paid more for this room too. They never inform you of this anywhere on their website. Clearly hiding it. The staff was amazing and did their best but clearly Norwegian is only interested in it's profits over how its costumers enjoy the trip. Cancelled island trips only led to more activities you can pay for on the boat. Not one thing was offered to guests to increase the enjoyment of their stay. Everything feels like up selling to the point where it's shoved down your throat. I get they want our money but it made the trip hard to ever relax or enjoy an event without someone looking thirsty at your wallet or really state room card. The public bathrooms were always clogged. Gross cause people still use them. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the itinerary. My party originally booked on Royal Caribbean, but we wanted to go to Keywest so we changed to the Norwegian Sun. Norwegian was also offering some nice incentives, the reasonably priced beverage package. Norwegian does some things really well. The beverage package was the best of any of the lines I have been on. The bar service was great, fast, friendly, and the drinks were good. The entertainment at sea was fun, with the entertainment staff doing a good job of keeping us smiling. The music was really good, upbeat. The live bands were great. The biggest complaint that I have about Norwegian is their food. The food in the main dining rooms was not good, it was not hot, and it appeared they were using the same base for every cream soup, the same beef for every beef dish. Although the servers were nice, they were really slow at serving us. If it wasn't for the food, Norwegian would probably rise to the top in my book. To date I have cruised on: Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival, and now Norwegian. Read Less

We booked 4 excursions and 2 were cancelled and all other excursions were booked so we were just out of luck. Staff was rude and was not interested in making the cruise even remotely enjoyable. Biggest waste of money ever, will never cruise norweigian ever again. The cruise staff us more worried about giving you hand sanitizer everytime you turn around rather than making the cruise enjoyable. The bars all close early and if you want a drink plan on waiting 20 or minutes in line. During peak hours there was 1 bartender working. We are previous Norwegian cruisers, and we chose this cruise to introduce some friends to cruising. We were very happy with our cabin, 8030, and very happy with Elias, our cabin steward, and with the ship overall. Embarkation and debarkation was smooth and easy. Entertainment was good, about the same as many other ships. We were very happy with Cagney's, the specialty steakhouse. Impeccable service, but we felt just a bit rushed. Now for the disappointments. The bar staff was disconnected and disinterested in actually making the passengers happy. The staff in the main dining rooms were both good, but the food they were serving was not as good as previous Norwegian sailings. The ship was roomy and clean, and the staff was knowledgeable and courteous, but important things such as announcements were lacking, in that the ships PA system was barely audible, distorted, and did not function at all in the cabins. The time scheduled in ports was too short, and it seemed like an alcohol induced drunkfest on Great Stirrup Cay, as there were many intoxicated people on the island. I know Norwegian isn't responsible for the behavior of their adult passengers, but this was a turnoff. Would I go again? Not this particular itinerary, but I would definately give Norwegian another try, probably on longer itinerary, and newer, larger ship. Read Less

Dinner staff in main room dies not care even had one hostess tell us they know we already tip so why care. Bhilly and aileen gave great service in midshipmen dinning room. The food quality was okay. Myself and 3 friends traveled on the Norwegian Sun on a 4 night Bahamas cruise for our annual girls' trip. We were incredibly disappointed. The food was between poor and mediocre, many of the staff seemed bothered, or downright rude, and the public restrooms were disgusting. There was water (or it may have been urine) on the floor of many of the bathrooms. Not pleasant, especially when dressed up nice. Though we did not bring any young children, I would have been really mad if I did. The kids pool is a joke, It is so small, almost like an afterthought. We had a balcony on the 10th floor, and it was a pretty standard cabin as far as cruise ships go. We did not go to any of the shows, or do any excursions, so I can;t comment on them. I have been on approximately 12 cruises, mostly Royal Caribbean, and a Disney. This was by far the worst, and not worth what you get, That being said, we had an amazing time spending time together, and had a blast hanging out with other guests, as almost everyone was there to have a good time and were friendly. I was happy that they made sure everyone coming in the dinning area or buffet used their hand sanitizer that a assigned staff member sprayed in your hands before entering. Get the germs away. Drinks was very delicious. Until next time toodles. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the price. The ship was very clean and refurbish. I loved the linen because they are taking care of the ocean. The food area was small and very clean, small plates and different options. You can even dine out. I did not like the they were not visible signs directing how to get from one place to the other. We went across the dinning pool area to get to the pool and it got crowded. I enjoyed that many activities were going on, that way we had options to choose. The store were small and not well assorted. The Fun director Luz was not the right person for the job. She was missing that charisma for the position. In the dinning room the staff was not as efficient because you had less staff. You also need more water stations, so people can keep hydrated. They were hard to find. Read Less

As a regular cruiser we have sailed on several ships in Royal, Carnival, and Norwegian. So this is not only a comparison to other companies but even within the same fleet. So let's begin with the ship. The Sun is an older ship, so we knew it would not have all the activities as the newer larger ships, but did not expect was certain parts of the ship including our room had a consistent smell of sewage. This was prevalent from the moment we stepped in on level 5 through our current sailing as I write this on to New Orleans due to the hurricane. More on that later. State rooms, again in addition to the smell, they are so understaffed that they don't even make the towel animals. Now this is not a big deal, but there are no details on anything. You are getting the bare-bones basics, don't expect anything else. Furthermore, beach towels, we had to constantly ask for them, our porter would not leave any in our room though we got an initial set and instructed to leave in our bathroom the dirty ones to get new ones. Restaurants, on this cruise we planned to just eat with included location as we have sailed and enjoyed the other options. Let me say bad choice... the food is blah at best. Most meals were tasteless, the soups tasted like they came from a can. The buffet food was just to fill you up, but not flavorful. In the Seven Seas dining room we did have an amazing waiter which we ensured to have every evening Lief James is amazing and went out of his way to give amazing service. He learned our wine preference and would just asked if we wanted our usual. But the food overall was okay, the best thing we had was the honey creme brulee but most of the other meals were just okay at best. Sports Bar, in most other shops the sports bar run 24/7 but not on the Sun, you gotta wait till 5:30pm. It does stay open till 5:30am, but if you want wings for lunch, tough luck. Bars, are okay. They really liquor up the drinks. But about half the bar staff are so rude, especially in the pool area. There was one Peruvian bartender who was funny and very nice to everyone but can't say the same about the rest of the pool bar staff. Activities, though their shows in the theatre were great, the rest of the ship activities are lacking. So the Cruise Director was MIA most of the time, had the personality of a shoe and shouldn't be directing activities at a daycare, little less a cruise ship. I spoke to many of the bands on board as they were pretty good, but it seemed their schedules were off, when I asked this director was new and changed it, so rather than having their top dance/party band playing the club to get people dancing, they would have them play an acoustic set in the atrium. Now about our storm experience... We were on another NCL ship when hurricane Maria went to South Florida and though a stressful experience, the ships staff on the Sky were amazing about getting information out... On this ship it has been a super horrible experience, each staff member you ask, you get different information. The Capt and Cruise Dir have been putting out bits of information and leaving much to speculation and creating havoc. Even worse, we were not allowed to cancel our cruise beforehand, only went to Cozumel though part of our charges included port charges for 3 ports, and no mention of credits or discounts on future cruises, which had been done previously. This specific part is on NCL and not the ship. As I mentioned before, my family and I have taken at least 6 other cruises on both NCL and other lines, this is the worst yet. If you are set to go on the Sun, I highly recommend recommend going on another ship. Read Less

We wanted a cruise experience and the Bahamas. We sadly were disappointed with Hurricane Dorian. We had travel insurance but our travel agent suggested we go cause NCL made no changes to the itinerary yet the night before. We decided to go and not cancel cause we expected at worst we would reroute to 3 other ports. One day was not enough notice to cancel everything we had set up to go even with Hurricane issues we expected we still have fun. Well 1 day in Mexico in Cozumel and a half day was nowhere near what we had in mind nor worth the cost we payed for Bahamas. Esp since My husband had been once with his parents as a teen. . The food was awful no selection for a picky eater. The specialty restaurants were lacking majorly. The buffets were edible if drunk. Same stuff daily almost, sadly not much choice. Not usually a drinker but between all the disappointments. Thankfully it was inclusive drinks....... The pool being closed 50% of time, hot tub packed and the streaming package I paid for not working after day one. I lost business not being able to use my phone and check in on work i lost a few big investors, the 10$ line was a joke. The excursion booking by phone app accidental, we couldn't get refunded. Guest services were no help anytime we went there. They didn't cancel our trip or give any info prior to boarding that we go to Cozumel... My husband had been there and I had no wish to go there, but we had boarded the boat and didn't get any info to were we reroute until another cruiser told us on the ship not even our itinerary told us till the next day. Very disappointed to say the least the have no offered any discount on a trip to the Bahamas or a partial refund! I know that Mexico is way cheaper to visit then the Bahamas and we didn't port 3 different places Nor did i even get to see the beach once. We did one excursion dolphin encounter, it was the only thing decent and we didn't receive our photos by email as we should've. They had switched our group with another's they couldn't find our photos, when tried to look and purchase them. They finally found them under a different groups number! We bought them and it was a week later I had to contact them to send them again. Overall we had a trip we will never forget and we hope to make it to the Bahamas when the poor island rebuilds. Not sure I will be going NCL We almost booked Disney even though, we don't have kids. They had 11 pools and 3 adult areas and pools. We may have at least got some swimming pool time and hot tub time while stuck on the boat for 6 days when supposed be 4 days. The nightmare getting home was another story very disappointed about the lack of updating and knowledge they never provided us during the chaos. The sun would've been fine had we ported 3 days where we planned. we could've dealt with the other issues, we had in general but honestly for our first cruise nothing went right! Room tenant was awesome remembered our names was very diligent and professional. The gift shop was pathetic and the Spa was overpriced for the deep tissue couples massage we received. I wasn't even sore afterwards as should be. Not impressed at all. We are smokers it was windy and raining off and on they only moved smoking down a level one time to keep the wind and rain less awful. We had a balcony and this was honestly the best part of the boat. However we were under the pool area, it was very loud as they picked the chairs up and sprayed the upper deck barley got any sleep! Worst cruise line ever! From the very beginning... we had a leaking pipe in our room that made the carpet soaking wet and the room smelt like mildew. They told us there was nothing they could do because they were fully booked. After going to guest services 3 times at 6:30 pm they finally moved our room. Our cruise to the Bahamas was changed the day we set sail. We were suppose to go to 3 different islands in the Bahamas (why I chose this cruise line) and we ended up doing majority at sea and one island in Mexico. So the cruise was extended by a day so 3 days at sea and 2 days at Cozumel, Mexico. Very disappointing... We were double charged for the internet package $155 that is still to this day not resolved (I stood in line at guest services 3 times the day of disembarkation trying to resolve). And just to top it all off they dropped us off in New Orleans and we had to figure out how to get home back to FL. No up front compensation... we had to submit receipts after the fact to be reimbursed up to $300 per person for “travel” only. Save your money and use a different cruise line. Read Less
