Just wanted to get away for New Years.....we had taken several NCL cruises in the past so we felt comfortable choosing them again. We like cruising because we like to be pampered and enjoy some nice meals while we relax. We usually boook suites in the Haven just for these reasons. NCL totally dropped the ball on this cruise..... My wife was horrified at the spa.....a woman was assigned to her who had never done a massage in her life.....she burped in my wifes ear every 2 minutes....when she asked to speak to a manager, she was avoided for 3 days and then told that there was nothing that could be done. We went to the buffets that were lacking any flavor or variety.....nobody was putting any extra effort into anything !!!! We tried to go to O'Sheehans for a "break" and were served wings with feathers still on them......we pointed this out to our server who looked at us strange and asked us when we expected her to do about it !!!! The specialty restaurants were just not up to par......we have dined at these restaurants SO many times in the past and we know what its SUPPOSED to be like......its just as if nobody cares anymore...... Thank God we already knew the Haven concierge from a previous NCL cruise to Italy....if not for her and our butler, this would have been even MORE of a nightmare. I believe that NCL came up with a great idea for their freestyle cruising....and that this gave them a lot of business.....unfortunately, they are now obviously resting on past laurels. I sent in all of this (and more) on a survey and nobody from NCL responded..... At this point, I really dont expect them to and we will probably cancel our Fall Foliage cruise with them for later this year..... Absolutely no fun involved at all when you are looking more forward to getting home than being on the cruise !!!!! At least when I got home, I only had my wife yelling at me....on the cruise, I had to deal with the "bingo-mama" and the other "entertainment staff" that was clearly more comfortable questioning the perceptions of the passengers rather than trying to address any possible problems..... At least I was happy to get home to my own toilet.....lol......the one in our cabin would spit the toilet water back up at the person sitting there every 2 minutes......never asked for a bidet....??? We have cruised with Royal Caribbean and Disney before and we had very good time. This X'mas we choose NCL cruise and it was the worst experience I have so far. This ship is pretty old. Many dinning options are extra cost. Food was no good and service was so bad. Based on the daily information showed O'Sheehans lunch open @11:30 my family went and the lady told us they need to clean up and won't open until @12:30 with rude attitude. After more than one hour waiting we finally got seats and the service was very slow. Entertainment was very poor. All entertainment activities closed at 10pm. They even lock-downed shuffleboard and ping pong table. They didn't offer much things to do on the cruise. There was some good thought. House keeping was good. They clean our cabin several times per day and always keep it clean. The two stars are for house keeping. Read Less

Our entire family of 6 ranging in ages of 60+ my mother, myself & husband in our 40’s & 3 teenage daughters had a great time. Norwegian is a great cruise line. The Star was small but I loved every bit of it. We will cruise Norwegian many more times to come!!! We had the adult beverage package. That is SO worth it!! Yes it was a perk but get it no matter what We loved the spa. We only purchased a day package, we don’t make that mistake again, we will purchase the Spa for the entire cruise My daughters loved the swimming/hot tubs and the freedom to enjoy themselves. As older teenagers we could let them explore, eat, and just hangout on their own schedules. They loved every minute of the cruise. We are going to spend more time cruising for our vacations from here on out!! Norwegian is who we will choose!! Read Less

Do not cruise this company. The second cruise with them I had taken. My toilet overflowed from day one repeatedly and they did not change our room. My personal belongings being ruined and they did not replace. We were forced to sleep in a sewer smelling room for 8 days. They said they would refund us at the end of the cruise but instead they have us a 100 dollar credit and said that was enough compensation. The food was horrific, it was worse then airplane food, so much of it was unedible, we couldn’t bare to eat it most of the time. The ship was so filthy and so packed full of people. Bathrooms were disgusting, pool was nasty and jacuzzis unsanitary, as well as all of them being cold. I can not believe they did not refund anything after this experience. Do not waste your money, try another cruise line. Read Less

We like going to the Mexican Riviera as it is close to home. Would rather the volume of all entertainment be turned down instead of increasing the volume for every venue. Kids club needs alot of improvement. I would have loved to have the swimming pool heated. After a conversation with the pool hand and the engineer in charge of the pool we were told that it was a law that the pool had to be a certain temp which was set at 26 degrees celsius. If you have more that three guests in a cabin be sure to check that they have pullman beds and not a bed in between the other twin beds. The configuration should be redone to accommodate four people comfortably. The speciality dining package was not too good. Mostly fat at the Modernos. The Le Bistro doesn't offer to much of a selection. Cagney's was the best but if you don't sign up ahead of time you can forget eating before 9:00pm. The entertainment could have been alot better if the volume had been turned down at all venues instead of cranked up to the point of wearing earplugs that still did not help. Many guests around us felt the same way and we saw crowds of people get up and walk out along with us. The kids club was awful especially when NCL advertises computer games. My two grandchildren saw only balls being tossed around and my little 6 year old got hit in the leg and that ended it for her. My 11 year old grandson refused to go as he is only interested in computer games. Much improvement needs to be done with the kids program. Read Less

Chose to go freestyle instead of Ruby Princess which has been our choice over many years to the Mexican Riviera in December. Stateroom even though midship towards the front (4009) had humming noises nonstop. Called guest services several times to report it. Once an officer came and confirmed noises would make one difficult to sleep. No further follow up by guest services to tell us the reason for the noises. Entertainment nightly in the theater was excellent with wonderful production shows except for 2 nights a comedian and a magician which were also entertaining. Many venues of entertainment throughout the ship most of the time except port days. Music throughout poolside, atrium and lounges were entertaining. Good selection of menus throughout specialty, buffet and dining rooms. Had a dining package so was able to sample most of the restaurants. You could also have some complimentary meals in some of the specialty restaurants which was nice. We enjoyed Ginza and O’Sheehan’s offerings. You could always go to O’Sheehan’s which was midship and open most of the time. Nice Internet cafe with tables for playing games. Departure from the ship was a disaster with lines of people waiting to come off the ship. We chose to wait until the lines had cleared before coming off. We found wheelchair service was a premium and not enough people assisting people embarking the ship. Read Less

This was my second time with ncl was my 16th Cruise. The food was slow to get out to us once it did it was barely lukewarm. I was in a sweet and had special place that I could have breakfast and lunch. When I ate there the food service was great. It was how it should be in all the dining rooms. When we where on the pool deck there was 2 slide they where not open very much for the kids to play on. We were next to a Carnival ship at Port and there's like was open. People were going down it ours was closed and the kids wanted to go down it. It was just frustrating but I made the best of it and had a good time. Everyone on the boat was nice. There where slow to get you a drink or even ask you for a drink. I will not be going on this cruise line agine. The entertainment was good but the seats were horrible hurt my back felt like you were going to slide off them. Read Less

We had a great time and enjoyed the amenities that the ship offered, sadly we were not able to get to all them. Dining was very good, Two constructive criticisms I can provide is that I read in multiple places ( written in hard copy as well as digital reading that I would be able to get BB Ribs and Prime Rib in O'Sheehans Bar and Grill never was able to get it. When I discussed it with Restaurant management they just responded with confusion. Also there was a disconnect in ( written in hard copy as well as digital reading) about dress code in the Versailles restaurant, Hence we were rejected at dinner venue when we had dress shorts attire. I did discuss the matter with one your female management staff that wore whites ( Buffet area) during the day and dark jacket ( Aqua) during dinner hours where she worked, she told me she would look into the matter. I have taken a ton of cruises and this was by far the worst. When we got to our room it was filthy. There was a dirty tooth pick on the ground, a dirty towel and it clearly had not been vacuumed. The boat if falling apart. Every public bathroom was over flowing. The boat is severely understaffed so the staff is running around and they look miserable to the service is terrible. I always felt like an inconvenience. We had to wait with a buzzer in order to have dinner every night and then we sat and waited to be served for over an hour. Honestly, I have done carnival cruises which are much less expensive and they are so much nicer. The food was terrible and my stomach was unhappy every day. We waited in line for everything all week. By the end of the trip we tried to expect the worst in regard to everything and then just be pleasantly surprised when anything was better than the worst. Read Less

We chose this cruise for our New Year's Cruise. Let me tell what went right. Fairly good food in the dining room. That is it! What went wrong? Almost everything else. No cabin service, to speak of. This was our 13th cruise, 1st on Norwegian, and definitely our last. Our cabin steward never introduced herself to us, which has never happened. We found out she DID NOT speak English. The last day and a half, the toilet in our room did not work. It seemed to us that about 75% of the crew did not want to be on that ship. One night I went toi the dining room in shorts and was told to leave, but when I returned in long lants, I saw several men allowed into the dining room in shorts! This was our 13th cruise, all together, and the 1st on Norwegian. It goes without saying, it is our last on Norwegian. Right from the first day, every public restroom my wife went into, she found one or more stalls out of order. This was every day of the cruise. We reported these outages, with zero results. Nobody cared, or had the ability to repair these stalls. Read Less

Ship, Cabin, and Dining: By far, the worst cruise I've been on. The ship itself is old. The cabin had not been renovated and had similarities to a motel. Dining was disappointing throughout the cruise. NCL is proud of their flexibility when it comes to dining - dine when you want, where you want. They have a few complimentary dining (Aqua, Versailles, O'Sheehan, Ginza, & Buffet). Despite the different restaurants, they offer the same food except Ginza. I go to O'Sheehan for breakfast to only realize the food plated is the same food from the buffet. I go to Aqua for dinner and realize they have the same dinner menu as the other restaurants. No variety. Ginza is supposed to specialize in Chinese food. My family (who is Chinese) was not impressed and commented that Panda Express is better. Overall dining service is negative stars because (1) many servers did not know what they were doing and (2) the food was not impressive. I'm used to servers taking drinking orders from all around the table but for some reason, servers walked away after taking only 3 drink orders for a party of 6. To stop the server to complete the drink order was unpleasant, because they were visibly unhappy. To sum up the food, the child in the party was the first to mention the saltiness of the food haha. Never thought I'd have a child who said the food was too salty. Entertainment and Activities: Be prepared for this is Vegas on a ship. Majority of the daily activities was an opportunity for NCL to sell raffle tickets and other items. If you're not interested in things being sold to you, there's not much you can do. Many on the ship were playing board games in the bar/lounge or on the sports deck. However with 3 days at sea, you get bored easily. It's definitely a cruise I describe best for older folks who enjoys lounging around, playing at the casino, and napping. For myself (late 20s), this cruise was not a good fit. Service: Service throughout the ship was terrible. Majority of the staff onboard were very rude and unapproachable. When you walk up to the restaurant host, the first thing they ask is for your room card. There is no smile or greeting. I was expecting "Welcome to Aqua, how many are in your party?" or "Good evening, how was your day?" with a smile. When the staff doesn't greet you or even smile, it ruins the whole experience. Negativity is contagious. The Art Auction staff is also rude. I won a artwork through a raffle at the auction and was instructed to meet with a specific staff after the auction. I informed her that I won the raffle and the first thing she says is "740" with (I should mention again) NO SMILE. In my head, I thought that was the amount I had to pay for the artwork. She corrected me and said that I can meet with her at 7:40 to discuss shipping. Since that time conflicted with the show time (7:30), I just passed on the free artwork. Sat in the Art Auction for 1.5 hours, left with nothing, and felt like I wasted my time. To top it off, I passed by her every day in the art lounge sitting at the desk doing nothing. Overall the staff was unwelcoming, unhappy, and non-accommodating. The only staff that made my day was the "Washie Washie, Happy Happy" ladies who greet you with smiles, laughter, and a spray bottle of hand sanitizer. Ports and Shore Excursions: I did excursions at 2/3 ports. The service at these excursions was 5 stars! My family commented the service at the ports were extremely better than on the ship. However descriptions of the excursions are not accurate to the paperwork distributed at the "Shore Excursion" counter on the ship. One excursion took me to places that were not described on the handout which made me nervous because (1) I was far from the ship at this point and (2) Mexico has an increase in criminal activities to tourists. But I made it back safely! The second excursion mentioned a tour in a military-type vehicle. That didn't happen and I was a bit disappointed. Note: If you do a dolphin experience excursion, the "Observer" ticket they sell you onboard for $55 only works if those swimming the dolphin is 18+. So if you're a parent wanting to watch your child interact with the dolphin, you will have to get in the water with them. The "Shore Excursion" counter does not tell you this when they sell it to you. I know because a member of my family was only notified once off the ship and in the hands of the excursion guide. They had to purchase another ticket. Some of my party has sailed with NCL before and said this was the worst experience they've had with NCL. It could be just the ship, the staff, or that it was over the holidays. But for me sailing with NCL for the first time, I would not return. I've had better experiences on other cruise lines. I hope my review prompts NCL to look into this particular cruise line because I spent $1,000+ and felt like I wasted my money. On top of that, I hope NCL looks into improving the service on the cruise because an automatic charge of $14 per person/per day does not reflect the service you receive. I know I'm not the only one who was dissatisfied because other guests I've encountered on the cruise felt the same way. I highly recommend for cruisers to try a different cruise line from NCL - not Mexican Riviera with Norwegian Star. Read Less

I moved this summer from PA to CA. I started a business in North Hollywood and needed a break. So, we decided to take a gamble on a West Coast Cruise out of LA. Wow, what a good decision that was! The embarkation was flawless and fast. I was amazed at how easy it was compared to New York. We drove right to the port, parked there, were met by a guy with a luggage cart before we even crossed the street, breezed through security and onto the ship. We ate in the Versaillles Main Dining Room for lunch, and had a great waiter that earned my first Hero Card of the Cruise. All of the food in the main dining room was excellent, as was Cagney's. However, I was very disappointed in the La Cocina Specialty Restaurant. The meatballs were horrible, the pasta undercooked, and the temperature of the food was mildly hot. I complained to our waiter and he did take meatballs off the check. I also made note of our experience on a comment card. The dinner was on Christmas Eve, so it was really disappointing since that has always been a very special dinner in my family. Additionally, I would not have booked it for Christmas Eve had I known that there was to be a special dinner in the main dining room. I mourned not having turkey that I know would have been better because their pasta was better than the specialty La Cocina's over-priced, undercooked pasta. Our waiter was also annoying at La Cocina. He kept getting confused in directing as to what our certificate entitled us to. That was really the sole negative food experience. I hope they correct the options to allow the rewards people to have anything on the menu, rather than making me pay extra for tiny meatballs and shrimp pasta. That did not make me feel good, especially on Christmas Eve. It would be very helpful for the weekly menu to be given to the people in charge of specialty dining reservations to improve dining choices, on the first day of the cruise. Now the good news: our cabin was clean, our steward was pretty good (he forgot to take my laundry...probably misunderstood us). We only had an inside cabin, but I did not mind it at all, shower had great pressure and we don't overpack. Now the better news: I Loved the casino. I didn't win, but the casino staff smiled, were friendly, and joked. The managers even laughed! I will like going to this ship's casino in the future. Lots of people won jackpots; next time, perhaps I will get lucky. The really lucky people were the passengers. The talent was really good; I actually participated in one show and stayed for the entirety of almost all I went to. That says quite a bit. I especially liked the two acrobats! The best, I saved for last: the officers on this ship were engaging, visible, and the bar manager was named my personal hero of the cruise. When I made a request, his response was: "Consider it done." He really was a nice guy, and a pleasure to talk with as well. He actually had a funny fishing story! I have been cruising with NCL for 34 years, and the captain of this ship was the FIRST captain that made an announcement thanking the entire staff, telling them that the passengers had provided positive comments and feedback regarding the service on the Star. He also mentioned how dear the ship was to him, personally. That message was just another reason I will continue to be an NCL loyalist. I WANT to be on a ship that the captain loves, and the crew certainly deserved his praise. My husband and I always talk up the staff of NCL when we recruit future cruisers, and we have recruited many, many friends and people we meet over the years. I look forward to bringing my grandchildren on this ship. I won't be afraid they will get lost! Anyway, I love the Breakaway, The Gem, The Pearl, and the former ships that no lomger are sailing with NCL. I have sailed with Carnival, Holland America, Royal Carribean and Princess, but never on any line other than NCL for more than one cruise. Best in Value and Service. Dining room has really improved, but respectfully, I would suggest rethinking clean and comfy. surcharges to "guests" of specialty restaurants. It's just bad form. Overall, I was very happy and look forward to our next cruise.. Read Less
