We just got back from a 10 day cruise to the Canary Islands leaving from Barcelona. Check in was fast and effecient. Cabin 11126 was a balcony on deck 11 not a great location as the main buffet restaurant was directly above and at 2am and 4am and 6am you could here noise from getting the buffet ready. Beds were comfortable bathroom was small and not much cabinet drawer space for your clothes. T.V. programs very limited and some night the channel dropped out. Dining was great liked the "The Garden" restaurant was it was more intimate and went at 5:30pm when they opened and service was always great. Food was good lots of variety on menu. It was not upscale food but delicious. First night they had prime rib which was great. Ask for a window seat and you usually get one. Ate serval times at Windows slow check in for table service slow same menu as the Garden. We went to Showgun Asian restaurant twice always got right in at 5:30pm food was good had the lemon pepper shrimp. Didn't really care for the dessert selection. We had severval breakfast and lunches at the main buffet Raffles lots of selection. I had the poached eggs for breakfast no line up. We ate outside which was nice and quiet. Some days had great selection of desserts baked apple and apple strudel. Entertainment was outstanding especially the magician show, arobats show and the new dance production elements. Didn't care for the three singers on two different nights one night it was opera and another a variety of songs. We went up to the Galaxy for the game shows which were good. Bands playing were good. Enjoyed all the ports except Casablana Morocco as there was too much pollution smog and lots of aggressive taxi drivers and merchants. Don't take the ship shuttle for $15 U.S to the city center as nothing really there but take a taxi from the port but be sure to get the price before you get it 40 to 50 euros for 2 hour tour. Lots of walking in all the ports as the ships are docked a long ways out from town 2.5km to end of pier. We enjoyed the size of the smaller ship about 2000 people. Enjoyed the glassed in sun room on deck 12 for sitting. Since it is an older ship lots of vibration from the engine which I didn't really enjoy. Embarkation was coloured coded and very effecient. Norwegian seems to be charging for a lot of extra activities on board 10 different ones one morning. Didn't take any of the ships shore excursions as they were all too expensive. Read Less

I only chose to do this cruise last minute because of the great deal I got but wow it was great to be back on this lovely ship. She is small to medium size, only 2000 passengers, which makes it large enough for you to have space when you want but small enough for you to feel the intimacy. She is also one of the better looking of the Norwegian ships. My cabin, a balcony, was adequate though I would not want to try and fit 3 people into it and as usual the bathroom area was tight. What was usual about this trip was even though it was mid November it was warm and sunny enough for me to use the balcony which was small and only had seats. Food was great thoughout the ship and I used all venues except sushi. My only complaint was windows as this venue is directly below the theatre and if the production is on while your seated it is very hard to have a conversation with people around your table. NCL do a great job with their solo travellers, one of the major reasons I use them, and this cruise was no different. We had a lovely group and our host was friendly and helpful. My only real down side was that some of the ports are so large that when I look out I am daunted by the length of the walk to get to the buses/taxis especially now that I am getting older and my mobility is lessening. I wish sometimes they would provide those little buggies you see at some airports. Read Less

I have not been with this cruise line, normally P&O, Royal Carrabian, or Princess cruises. Liverpool cruie clube (now cruise club UK) did FANTASTIC deals including full drinks package for really low price. The buffet is smaller than other ships and becomes over crowded especially at breakfast, not sure why they do not keep seated breakfast going on until 10am to eleveate this state. Food in buffet a tad limited again when compared to other cruise lines, however seated dinning was exceptional, and the Blue Lagoon was excellent service and food. The venues were a first for me after searching for this combination of Venice and Malta for years, really good venues and quiet close to the town (walking distance) in most cases unlike the med cruises with bigger ships. Cabi was small (inner to save expenses) and didnt have coffee facilities, which meant the wife had to pop and get coffee before I stirred !!! (yes OK but I am a tad disabled) Not sure the cabin lady we had was changing sheets but bed always made and cabin acceptable clean standard. Overall really good value for money, excellent attitude by staff, and a great holiday. Read Less

I've cruised on another Norwegian ship as I love Italy and the Mediterranean and this cruise took me to places I hadn't visited. The price was right too. We landed in Rome the day before and spent some time on the hop on hop off buses. It's a great way to get an overview of a place.the hotel we stayed at was close to the train station so all was well. the embarkation process was simple and my room with a balcony was nice and bright and very quiet. I can't say enough about the crew, they work hard and are amazingly polite and helpful. I thought the food was fine and some entrees were positively fabulous . Generally we had breakfast at the buffet and dinner at a restaurant as the buffet can be a bit of a cattle call.i was a little underwhelmed at the entertainment tho some of it just wasn't my cup of tea.You also have the choice to not go. We did excursions in all ports and the were all really informative and spoke good English, however one tour guide was outstanding and that was a tour we took in Sicily - FABULOUS. Sicily by Mario it is not a tour off the boat (www. sicily by mario.com) we did "The Godfather Tour" we were picked up at the dock and whisked away to our destination .Our guide was Ignazio Astone and he was great, spoke really good English was charming and knew his stuff as he had been born in Messina and still lives there. our tour was altered because of the G7 Summit so we could not go to Taormina after Savoca and Forza da Agro but Ignazio gave us an in-depth look at Messina. Great time I highly recommend tours by Mario,(reasonable too) Read Less

First time cruisers, picked the Spirit primarily on price. Was a bit concerned initially by reviewers who wrote off the ship as being old and tired. Although we had an inside family cabin, we were happy with the size and condition of the cabin. We did have a noise problem at 2 AM when the staff was doing deck maintenance directly above us ( tell me how that makes any sense ... ) , and a plumbing backup issue another morning. NCL did provide complementary wine after each complaint, which took the sting out of things. We only ate in the complementary restaurants, but were generally happy with them. Only issues were salty food at times, and an order at the Blue Lagoon that was totally wrong, with very slow service and pretty much ruined our lunch during a busy afternoon at sea day. We ended up leaving after an hour and going to Ruffles Lounge. The evening performances were quite good, which was a surprise given that previous reviewers felt it was cheesy. Cruise director was great, kept things light and nightly videos were used to highlight activities for the next day. That being said, they could have given more port info to patrons not purchasing the ships excursions. The PROVENCE (MARSEILLE) port was changed to the island of Corisca due to high winds. I think this was great as we enjoyed the port, but other passengers were disappointed. We were disappointed that you could not leave the ship and wander around port in LIVORNO (FLORENCE / PISA) without paying 10 euro to sit on the Spirit's bus to go to the end of the wharf. I would have expected that after having paid port fees, I could at least walk thru the port. We were not allowed in port unless we went on the NCL bus. We particularly enjoyed PALMA MAJORCA. Again, more port info earlier on would have let us been more prepared before hand, but once we figured out that you could walk to 'old town', we had a great day. PALMA MAJORCA was by far my favorite port. All this being said, the ship itself was better than expected, the staff were great and the food was satisfying. Great value for the dollar. Read Less

We were recently at the Norwegian Spirit that sailed to Limassol, Cyprus and Haifa Israel. It was a memorable cruise - one, the itinerary was really great, we made good friends in the ship, and the ship crew had been friendly/helpful (in spite of the commotion when many passengers had to make new travel arrangements due to the Venice fog that prevented us from arriving at the port on the planned time.) We enjoyed the entertainments and the food was good for the most part of the cruise. We enjoy NCL because the crew are happy and treated well by the company (we have on one that the crew were so miserable it dampened the mood of holiday) - we see supervisors helping out all the time. It is a relaxed atmosphere. We were told of the luxury of other cruise lines eg. Oceania - but we sail NCL because luxury cruises are not within the budget, we are easy to please because we believe we can make our holiday as fun or as miserable as we want to (barring unexpected glitches beyond our control.) We loved this itinerary and not everyone will agree but we will sail NCL again. Read Less

As 1st time cruisers we extremely enjoyed this voyage. Beautiful ship, lovely cabin, with a balcony, very friendly helpful and polite staff Food plenty and enjoyable, liked the freestyle experience although there were plenty of other eateries to choose from Entertainment shows were brilliant and lots of dancing with the very good band HOTWIRE Embarkation was smooth if you didn't have to wait for a badge/sticker Perhaps next time we may choose not to have too many ports of call all at once , it was nice to visit Marseilles, Cannes, Pisa, Rome and Naples but would've liked a break in between like we did from Naples to Santorini but in all enjoyed the experience. The only downer was the over expensive tours. There was good advise given for Norwegian spirit tours but no other alternatives if you wanted too go on your own. We linked up with American / Canadian friends and shared a taxi cost around Florence/ Rome/ Athens and Croatia for a fraction of the cost Norwegian were charging. We would definitely cruise again with Norwegian and would recommend the company to friends and family See you again .....................SOON Read Less

We have cruised with this cruise line several times. We had always had a good experience but since our last cruise I am a vegetarian and can only comment on the lack of vegetarian options are atrocious Lack lustre curry stir fried vegetables fried rice , or salad were the only option for meals and so the only meal worth looking forward to was breakfast There are no vegan options either. We met really lovely people, entertained by the Acoustic Soul brothers excellent!! And the piano virtuoso Ian West who tinkled the ivories like a legend. Some of the stops were by tender and can be slightly precarious for older persons however the staff were always helpful, some of the stops had very steep slopes so looking at the shore excursions need to be considered before booking The ship itself had a good variety of entertainment great swimming pool and cheerful staff. Looking forward to Amsterdam and Iceland. Booked >400 days before the sail date. We had 4 fabulous days in London before sailing. We planned private excursions at every port at great expense. Embarkation went smoothly since I'm a gold latitudes member. The ship had only 2018 passengers and was in need of upgrading. The cabin was small. Meals at the paid restaurants were excellent. Other than breakfasts, other meals we're not so good, except at the blue lagoon. The meat was consistently tough. Entertainment was great, especially acoustic soul brothers. Cabin service was excellent and room service was on time and hot. The servers were attentive and pleasant. The original itinerary already had 3 stops in Norway which would have been plenty. When 2 more stops in Norway were added, it got quite redundant. Missing Amsterdam, then Le Havre, then the two stops in Iceland, then Scotland before finally docking g at Belfast was extremely disappointing. It was also very costly since we had prepaid for private excursions at each of these stops. As changes were being made to our itinerary, we managed to book excursions at the new ports only to have them also canceled. There was a very disruptive group of unhappy passengers that intimidated the rest of the passengers and crew. My travel companions and I avoided the atrium, the gathering place for the protesters, as much as possible. Overall, my friends and I made the most of a troubling situation but are not satisfied with the offer of 25% toward a future cruise. We've had financial losses that we can't recover and a cruise that didn't even remotely resemble the planned trip. Although I appreciate the captain’s efforts to keep the passengers and crew safe, I feel that more should be done to make up for the extreme changes to the long-awaited cruise. Read Less

We are retired and have done 9 cruise's in the last 4 1/2 years with 5 different lines. Went on a 7 day on the NCL Gem. Had a great time food was wonderful and people were grand. We bought NCL dollars for the next cruise. Book a Spain trip and brought family. Started with the life boat drill. Staff did not even have a life jacket to show people. The Engineer that was head of our station was more into talk with other workers and laugh that you could not hear and was not taken with any responsibiliey. We have all done them before but very unnerving. The Spirit is In my opinion is one of the best ship's in lay out and size we have been on. It dose show its age. The ship is so dated and worn out. The bath room always smelled of sewage and a lot of other had the same problem. Not very many Ice or water points and they never had the pool side station open. First port came we had paid for a tour. Getting off the boat you had to pay again to take a bus out of port. This turns out on all ports. You could not walk and was more the attitude of the cruise. They never had any maps you had to buy at the local tour office. They did not know anything about the ports and could give NO help. They just took your money again for the bus and you were on your own. Yes we had some very wonderful people on the cruise. But I have never seen so many workers than were unhappy. No smiles and just putting in there time. It was from the heads of departments. Morning breakfast with all early tours. In the main buffet trying to eat had the women that did the fresh juice yell at 5 of us as the was no yogurt and the women asked her about it. She began YELLING " not my Job" loud enough that the manager came around the corner took her away for a second then she returned to just stand there and give the hate looks. The mornings we had early tours and were trying to eat and get out they would have the poor girl clean the bathrooms during the middle of us all trying to do what we needed and get off the ship. Just SO much poor or no planning and for site. Getting on the tours in the stage was a total joke. The manager was no where to be seen. In Window dinning three nights we could get no water. Could never get a second glass of wine. And took close to 2 hours to eat. Manager was told all for not. Others bought the drink package and could not get refills more times than they could. Managers were what I saw the problem. So many servier just doing what they had to. NO Smiles nothing extra Very depressing. The food was so plain. No taste or spice. Nothing like the Gem. More like some of the other cheep lines. Read Less

Chose for the cruise for destination and ports. Service in dining rooms left much to be desired. Hostesses were rude and made you feel as though you were an imposition and not a guest. Servers were polite but very slow. Had to wait 40 minutes for our brealfast to be served. We watched our food sitting for 15+ minutes, on several occasions, before being served. When it was served, food was always just lukewarm. Special requests were not honored. Often food ordered didn't arrive. I believe the prepaid gratuities lessened the service. In the past servers had to earn their tips. The specialty dining was very good. Food was excellent and service was excelllent. On deck barbeque was great! Room steward was great. Friendly and very attentive! Entertainment was enjoyable. Some of the recreational activities would have been nice to participate in but very expensive. The least expensive buy in for Bingo was $49.00. Overall it was an average cruise experience. Read Less

I had never been to Morocco or Madeira(Funchal). I had been to the Canary Islands and wanted to go back. the ports were as advertised but, the service left a lot to be desired. the buffet was not up to prior sailings, There was a hair in my cake the first day; the second day I had a piece of plastic in with my bacon. so we avaided the buffet as much is possible. in the non=specialty dining rooms the service was slow. it would take 15 to 20 minutes to get an iced tea brought to the table. my wife asked for a second bread tray and it never came. But if you were paying for drinks, they came promptly, and the staff was there to make sure any refills were .provided. The cabin steward was fantastic and the service in the specialty restaurants was excellent also. Embarkation and disembarkation were handled smoothly. Stevie B and the Three Tenors highlighted the entertainment musically and the show Magika was appealing. The ship is old and need refurbishing, the Captain indicated that the ship would not be refurbished soon because the people on these itineraries were older and like the ship this way. Read Less

All inclusive on this cruise isn't true.We saw an add for an 11 day mediterranean cruise for 1699.00 per person by the time i was done it was 3k per person. We got the unlimited beverage package which didn't include water, can you believe that they don't include water disgusting, If they had half a brain they would give you small water bottles with their logo on it to advertise off the ship do they even know what unlimited beverages means. Don't ever book a tour from the ship they rob you you will do much better off the ship with private taxis or a private tour groups. Back to the price i paid extra for a cabin with a private deck its the size of a closet with no storage and no place to put your luggage. The food is mediocre at best.It was supposed to be free style what ever that means but you had to buy a package for other supposedly better restaurants if that's what you would call them more like a cafeteria not worth the extra money. The entertainment was a high school musical not the show high school musical the level of entertainment. The service is the same as anywhere else you go they higer people from third world countries treat them like dirt and want them to perform out of fear of being fired so usually they are terrific. If that's not enough when you go to trade money they rape you. They also have these so called art shows where they offer you free champagne and free gifts to show up and then they try to rip you off with people who are bidding on art while others in the audience are bidding up the price let the buyer beware. Of our numerous cruise experiences, this was our fourth one with NCL and ranks in fourth place of our NCL experiences. This was our third time on the NCL Spirit. This time we saw signs of the need to update and refurbish. Carpet is spotted and stained and coming apart at seams in places. Attention to detail for the passenger was lacking in many regards; especially for persons with disabilities. Miscommunication and bad information was provided several times by impatient NCL employees. The detail of providing for an outstanding cruise experience just did not exist in the same way as we have experienced previously on NCL. In speaking with other passengers with disabilities, we discovered this theme repeating among many of them. There was limited assistance and sometimes none for embarking and disembarking the ship. Sometimes when the elevators were closed for disembarking purposes we had to walk extensively out of the way to another elevator series. We followed NCL instructions for getting assistance to disembark at the final port but never received assistance. In order to meet our connection time, we hobbled of the ship among the last passengers to leave the ship. We nearly missed our connection because of incorrect information provided by a young NCL officer who was rude and impatient with people with special needs. He blamed the problem on NCL not providing him with sufficient personnel and wheel chairs and took no ownership of resolving the problem. Internet access was an expensive joke. When you sign up for wireless service they don't tell you until afterwards that it does not work well in cabins because of "all the walls." You need to be in public space which is not necessarily convenient depending on what you need to accomplish on the internet for business purposes. I am still addressing ship phone charges for times when our cell phones were not connected. The ports were great. We had a great time in spite of the NCL disappointments. It will be awhile before we book again on NCL. Read Less

I have sailed with NCL 2x before. I brought my two teens(18,19) to see Spain, France and Italy. First, the port we left from, Barcelona, was the easiest ,nicest port I have used. But March 5th is very cool on the Mediterranean Sea. We needed rain coats and jeans to make it through most day trips. The ship ,the Spirit , was a fine older ship. It did rock in the rough seas we had crossing to Corsica( a replacement stop as Marsialles was blowing a gale) and it was rough leaving Italy to Majorcca Spain. The support crew and wait staff were lovely and really made me comfortable. They have yet to know what "homemade chicken noodle soup" tastes likebut hey they were trying when I ordered it for room service and it came cold with spagetti noodles and uncooked celery and carrots. I was disappointed with promo dining which was limited to 3 specialty meals( before we had all). The customer service desk at first denied we had any dining promo and only after a protracted argument where I had to produce proof of the promo( which I had in my bag) were they even going to give us those three. Given the lack of consideration from the ship's customer service desk, I strongly suggest you confirm your dining options as you check in and be sure your room key reflects those choices.. AND be sure to order water ahead of time, or you will pay over $5 per liter once on board. Despite those unfortunate rude moments, we had a great time. Hot tubs, pools and entertainment were very enjoyable. Read Less

First, our impression of the ship. The ship is not the newest or largest so usually it did not have priority to tie up a the closest piers and we almost always had to take a shuttle. The entire ship is decorated in a Chinese style. Even Cagney's steakhouse looks more like a Chinese restaurant than the Sushi Bar. La Trattoria is a section of the Raffles Buffet that is closed off in the evening and not very cozy. It appears as though Norwegian tried to adopt the ship to their style and include their restaurants. The Bier Garten consists of some picnic tables by the pool. The Blue Lagoon and Shanghai Bar are only some wide spaces on a main fore and aft passage. The Pub is nice, but small and crowded. Le Bistro is pleasant and Raffles works well. Rooms were up to par and very clean. The staff was very professional, helpful and friendly The fitness room was well equipped, clean, and quite empty. Dining at le Bistro, Cagney's Steakhouse and Teppanyaki was outstanding. The food was always delicious, properly prepared and served. I can't say enough good things about them. The Main Dining Rooms, not so much. They were very spotty. A good meal was a pleasant surprise. Examples were waiting over half an hour for an cold appetizer, fish being served lukewarm or dried out, a salad with cheese that had no cheese in it, a picatta dish with mystery white sauce on it with no capers or lemon seasoning, bananas foster with raw bananas. You get the idea. Although we were in port every day, the ship was out of things that were on the menu (fresh eggs, sorbet, baked potatoes) and not always for only one day. Salt and pepper shakers were missing from sections of Raffles Court. Small things, but that what you pay for and not up to Norwegian standards. Would I take this cruise again? Yes. Our reason for making this cruise was for the ports of call and they were terrific, but as expected, not long enough. Hope this helps you. Read Less

We were looking for a great itinerary.Excellent on Spirit. However we spent too much money on NCL shuttles since they were not free in Dubrovnik or Venice. The food was average and in general the waiters were amateurish in the dining rooms. The entertainment was very limited. We spent most of the time in Champagne Charlie's listening to piano music. No movies were offered in the evening, basically 50 dollars a pop on bingo games. What a rip-off!.The staff in general were very polite especially the room steward. For us the whole trip was ruined by what we observed at the Mercuri vineyard in Katakolon. While walking around we saw three dogs, a hound type, very friendly, chained up with a damaged leg, limping badly. In another enclosure were two Dalmations with horribly infected eyes, filthy dirty. We were very upset to see this. Would we travel with N.C.L. again? This cruise left from Barcelona Spain, a wonderful city that we've visited several times over the years. There were 10 of us travelling together and almost everyone is a seasoned cruiser. My wife and I have cruised on Carnival, Celebrity, NCL, and Royal Caribbean. We have about 30 cruises under our belts but not trying to compare this cruise to the others that we've been on. Getting on and off of the ship was really a breeze. Luggage was delivered to our cabin right away and when we disembarked our luggage was waiting for us in the terminal. That part was great. The Norwegian Spirit is a smaller ship, about 72,000 tons and it's an older ship that is showing its age. Although it was clean and tidy, it appeared shopworn to us and in need of a major update. The public areas were very crowded throughout our 10 day cruise which made it unpleasant. Our cabin was a veranda cabin, number 11592, and it was clean but showed its age. The sliding door to our veranda was dirty when we arrived and was never cleaned for the duration of our cruise. The veranda deck was very dirty with chipped paint and general dirt. The sliding shower door was very hard to close, The dining was a disappointment to us. The buffet was not very well kept up, they were short on staff, and it was very difficult to find a clean open table for four of us. We had to go to be bar ourselves in order to have a beer with lunch. We complained to the apparent overseer of the buffet seating area about this and were told "We're just too busy to get you any drinks from the bar". Pretty poor customer service making us feel that this was a bother rather than as if we were valued guests. The food in the Main Dining Room and Windows was pretty good but not special but the dining room staff was attentive and pleasant. We ate in Cagney's Steakhouse which was excellent, the Trattoria Italian Restaurant and it was not good at all, Shogun Asian which was just a little better than OK, and Le Bistro which is a French Restaurant and it was the best that we had. The main shows were OK but nothing special, except the last show which was very good. It's like they saved the best for last so that our final impression would be positive. All in the entertainment was just OK. The service in the bars was nonexistent. We tried several bars and had to get our own drinks to bring to our seats. Very short on staff for the whole cruise. The itinerary was great and we enjoyed the stops very much. We didn't take shore excursions from the ship but always went on our own. We all talked about this cruise, the staff, and the ship and it all left a sour taste in our mouths. The service was generally poor and the attitude of the staff was also poor with some exceptions. We all felt that the value of this cruise was poor and we probably won't be cruising with NCL again for a long time if ever. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the fantastically low price, but I was soon to find out why the price was so low. The Mediterranean itinerary was very attractive and included Israel and Cyprus, two places I had never been. The cabin (9572) a balcony was a very nice room with plenty of space and the bed was very comfortable. This was about the only good thing I could say about this cruise. The food on this cruise left much to be desired. The only good meals that I had during the 11 nights o board were in the specialty restaurants, Cagneys Steakhouse and the Japanese Steakhouse. The Garden and Windows Restaurants, which are the main dining rooms, were adequate, but very slow. Raffles, the buffet, was terrible. The food was usually cold and it was the same, night after night. The small dining area near the casino was Ok, serving hamburgers, hot dogs etc. The food service employees appear to just go through the motions of bringing you your food, which is one reason I am not a fan of the Freestyle dining. There is no incentive for them to give you good service as they may not see you again for the rest of the cruise. They even charge $7.95 for the delivery of room service. I guess one employee at Raffles summed it up quite well. He observed that I was not very happy with the selection of food and asked what the problem was, I simply replied " I'm just tired of the same food every night", to which he replied "Imagine having to eat this garbage every nigh of a 9 month contract". We both laughed. The entertainment was average, with the usual cruise shows. The Casino was terrible. there were not many people gambling and the tables were usually empty. I saw very few people being paid on the machines and there was just no fun atmosphere. This was definitely not a "Fun Ship" (ie. Carnival). In the end, I was very happy to get off of this cruise. I was able to finally get a good meal in Venice! I should have listened to advise, that if something seems to good to be true, it usually is! This KMART type bargain cruise was definitely not worth the money. Look to another cruise line if you are looking for good food and a good time! Read Less

Our first open sea cruise having only experienced European river cruises previously. However the timing was right and friends who have done multiple cruises before (although not with Norwegian) highly recommended them. On the plus side, if we had sailed the scheduled cruise, we would have run through storms and high seas so the line (or perhaps the skipper) decided to run the cruise in reverse order. That must have required a huge logistical effort to rearrange berthing dates, excursion dates and supplies but it was handled extremely well and appreciated by most. As we were travelling through Christmas and were actually scheduled for a day at sea on Christmas Day, this did mean some places were not open or were not as active on the new dates of call and some excursions were cancelled or shortened but this was understandable in the circumstances. The quality of the excursions was very good - our only suggestion is that the Avignon & Marseille tour have less free time in Avignon where there was not a lot to do and spend that time in Old Marseille which we did not have time to stop at. But for the ship and on board portion of the cruise, we were not satisfied. Most of the staff were pleasant and capable - there were some notable exceptions. The proficiency levels were mixed with some outstanding members of the crew and some mediocre. The food - we had 4 nights in specialty restaurants and 3 nights in the general restaurants. Of the 4 specialty restaurants, all were excellent with the exception of the Italian restaurant which had a mediocre menu selection and the food quality was just ok - 2 of us selected the Osso Bucco and although it looked great when served, was dry and over cooked inside. No one raved about their dinner. Of the general restaurants, Windows, was the a la carte option. The restaurant presents very well. The head staff were very proficient. The wait staff were a lucky dip. Some were fantastic whilst others were perhaps in training or if not, were in need of retraining. The food selection was much better than we expected. The issue was getting a hot meal and/or hot tea and coffee. It seems the galley for this restaurant is located elsewhere and all meals come in with a warming cover to retain the heat - not successfully. This process added to the time taken to deliver meals. If at breakfast you were unlucky enough to get an inept wait person along with the delay in delivery of the meal, you had to decide whether you were going to wait or going to leave so you could get to your excursion (excursions leave around 8am and we thought getting there for 6:30 would give ample time for a standard breakfast with tea and coffee - wrong - so we ended up having breakfasts at the buffet from day 3 on. The buffet selections were very good and the food was at least what you would expect from a buffet. The entertainment - our river cruises all had excellent entertainment and our friends having travelled on other cruises all spoke in glowing terms of onboard entertainment and shows. Unfortunately that was not the case with Spirit. Our first experience was a duo who performed nightly in the Galaxy of the Stars lounge around departure time each night. Their bracket selection was "varied" to say the least and they were often off key. It got to the point we would head off to dinner when they came on. The "shows" were definitely sub standard. The "production team" were either over choreographed or under rehearsed as you could almost see them counting 1 2 3 4 as they performed their routines. The quality of the sound system did not help them and they were often missing notes. The off-broadway show they did (and granted it was at short notice) was ample reason to confirm why they were not actually on broadway. The acrobatic show was a couple who had been very good at one time but are now living off that reputation. We had wanted to go to some of the themed entertainments advertised prior to departure but these were all around 10 or 11pm which when you have to get up at 6 to get to breakfast at 6:30 so you can get to your excursion on time was just not feasible. Bar staff were either very good or very bad - getting 2 cocktails the same was a challenge - even the cocktails of the day. The accomodation - we selected the 11th floor (top accomodation floor) midship balcony staterooms. They were smallish but quite adequate and very acceptable. Our steward was exceptional. Every night around 10:30pm there was the sound of running on our roof. We can only assume that there was a fitness class at that time of night and they were using the pool area rather than the running track on the 13th floor. But then every morning between 5:30am and 6:30 am there was a scraping and banging on the roof. We couldn't figure out what it was and after 5 days I went upstairs to find that the staff were putting out the deck chairs. They had a big stack which they dragged around making the scraping noise. They would then take a chair off and plonk it on the ground and then another and then another and then drag the stack along further. I couldn't blame the staff as they were only doing as ordered. But who in their right mind would schedule that for that time - people arent going to be using them (if at all in winter) until at least 8 in summer and no sooner than 9 in winter. We were not the only ones to experience this - every cabin below the pool area had the same issue. We did not pay the additional cost for this standard of stateroom to be woken every morning to that. Our tour ended with receiving the account. Because of the excursion downgrades and cancellations, we had a credit balance (and once again, we have no criticism of why these occurred). We expected this to be credited to our card which Norwegian hold on file for settlement of their invoice. However we were told this was not so and that Norwegian would send us a cheque for that amount in due course. That was unsatisfactory - if we owed them money for additional items, they would deduct immediately from our credit card so it is a blatant rort for them to "put a cheque in the mail" in USD which we would then have to pay a minimum $25 clearance/exchange fee to get our own funds. We have communicated with them via the only means they provide (with the exception of a USA phone call) through their web site and have a standard response that someone will look at the email within 28 days - again unsatisfactory. As we bought our tickets through an Australian Travel agent and paid in AUD, our contract with Norwegian is subject to Australian law and we will be lodging a formal complaint to the Australian Government Fair Trade to resolve this promptly. Would we go on another open sea cruise - probably. Would we use Norwegian again - MOST DEFINITELY NOT. Read Less

My fiance and I chose this cruise because we are recently engaged and found an incredible deal with Norwegian- we decided that this would essentially be our honeymoon, as we are starting our own business and wouldn't have the time or the means to take another trip after our wedding. The reservation process was essentially painless, we thought we were getting off to a good start. Once we arrived in Barcelona and tried to find the cruise terminal, we saw that it would either be about a 40 minute walk with our luggage over an incredibly steep highway bridge to get to our particular ship, or pay for a taxi which we begrudgingly did. At the terminal, we were harassed slightly for not having paper copies of our reservation in hand and were told to step aside until I could present our reservation number on my phone and the guard could bring himself to actually look at what I was showing him. Past that point, embarkation was smooth and our bags made it to our room. For the rest of the review of the cabin, see below. Dining! What fun (sarcasm). As we were only able to go on the cruise because of the advertised price of $500/person, we couldn't splurge to go to the restaurants to pay for steak dinners every night. We've been on other cruises with other lines where the food in the buffet area and the main dining rooms have been more that satisfactory- just about everything on Norwegian about killed us. Not only did the food taste cheap and not like real food and was cold, my fiance and I both had food poisoning just about every night. Our only saving grace was to find food ashore and sneak it back on board as to not get sick from the food being served to us. When we had days at sea, our only solace were the rolls and crackers that we knew were safe. When we ate at the dining halls, the woman who would seat us was the only genuinely happy person to greet us and pay attention to us. Once we were seated in the dining hall, we would be ignored by the wait staff. I am 25 and my fiance is 30 so it would be safe to say that we are some of the younger folks on the ship- we were dressed in nice slacks and shirts and tried to smile and be friendly with the staff, but we were in turn either ignored when an older couple or group was seated next to us or were just given very disingenuous service. I also had an experience at one of the bars on board- I attempted to order a beer during afternoon trivia. It took about 10 minutes for the bartender to look my way and I ordered my beer and he repeated the order back to me. He then went to the other side of the bar to take the orders of about 8 other people after me (all of them mixed drinks for people middle-aged or older). I went to back to my fiance no longer wanting the beer as I was waiting more than 15 minutes to pay $9 for a Dos Equis (a $4 in the US). The bartender then got out the beer and was about to open it when he made eye contact with me finally and I told him no and said loudly that he had ignored me. A man next to me even said it was ridiculous to him that I had not been taken care of and that no apology was given., so it wasn't just me noticing that I was a second class citizen in their eyes. The saving grace of this trip were the ports of call. Just about every port (except Messina) was wonderful. If it weren't for the aquarium pretty close to the port in Valencia, the town was a bit run down. I'm sure the excursions offered by the company were great but again, we didn't have the means to go on many of them. Malta was AMAZING, as was Palma Mallorca- very nice surprises. Messina was just a bad choice. I can understand folks wanting to see the countryside, but with excursions starting around $80/person, there was no way we could do it and we didn't have much interest, so we tried wandering around to see the local flair. Bad idea. The locals seemed pretty peeved to have tourists in their town and it was also very dirty. We were disappointed in our shore excursion in Pompei. We signed up for what we thought was a shuttle to and entrance into Pompei itself and preordered before the cruise. When we received our tickets on the ship the night before, it was only until we saw the words printed on the tickets that the entry fee was separate from the shuttle and we had only paid for a shuttle. And once we got to Pompei, we were informed that the Prime Minister would be arriving later that day so the place had to be emptied without refund or discount (not the fault of Norwegian on this part but still a ridiculous experience). The hot tubs were a nice escape after long days of walking and exploring until the middle of the cruise, when they decided to close two of them to repaint...? It just seemed like weird timing and the paint fumes along with the exhaust from the ship were in the vents and we could smell it in our cabin, 3 floors down and in the interior of the ship. There were also a couple of tournaments in the casino on the last day at sea- smoking is allowed in the casino, therefore the strong, pungent odor of cigarette and cigar smoke filled our cabin and the rest of the ship as well. And finally, DAILY SERVICE CHARGE. Daily service charge is usually something I am more than happy with paying, the staff on cruise ships have been some of the nicest and most welcoming people I have come into contact with... on other lines. This ship's crew with the exception of about 4 individuals were all surly, never smiled at us, and never seemed happy to be there. The vibes were overwhelmingly negative on that ship. We were so happy to be leaving the ship and then we received that final bill on the last morning. We thought we were paying $500/person for a wonderful experience, and nowhere did it say how much we would be paying on top of that. We paid an additional $13.50 per person per day, so they charged us an additional $325 or so. I have never been so disappointed in an experience in my life. I love to travel, and I used to love cruising. If we do ever end up cruising again, I can assure you it will never be with Norwegian. I'm sure that if you pay for an exclusive balcony room with every amenity, you will be catered to hand over foot. Read Less

Don't like negativity but after 34 cruises we have found bottom of the barrel. Ship is the oldest I think NCL operates and it is very tired but kept very, very clean. Odd design compered with other ships but this is perhaps down to age. Cabin was very small, but steward kept it immaculate. The food was very basic. The minute you step on board you see the extra charges. All the dining options available, but take out the " main dining rooms and 1 other , they all have extras.fees. $9 for a room service if you need some thing brought to you.. Drink prices are silly and even bottled water will fleece you. No dress codes whatsoever, well not applied, hoodies, jogging bottoms and flat caps in dining room. Perhaps that is the way NCL are going but we still like a little bit of class. 5 days at sea and no deck entertainment. Around Madeira and the Canaries the desk were full of sunbathers but no live music or entertainment staff . The entertainment staff worked hard below decks but I am sorry to say The Cruise Director was conspicuous by her absence apart from a 30 second stint after each show. The cruise singers and dancers were very good and put on 3 excellent shows but the ""Professional" artistes " were mediocre and after a ventriloquist and juggler I was expecting somebody playing the spoons or paper and comb. Sorry but not very interesting.. 20 year old ship perhaps its time it went as there are so many better options on the market for the same price or cheaper. Cheap does not mean value for money if it is poor. Read Less
