I can't say much good about my recent far too long cruise. "Drink all you can" -package, that most people seemed to have been with, had attracted the most unattractive crowd I have ever seen. To make matters worse NCL security seemed very much at loss, unable to properly judge people and situations. As the monotonous days dragged on (enrichment program very thin) many drunks/drinking parties seemed to be on lookout for excitement, or trouble. Worse, some of the younger staff of security seemed eager at getting off steam at passengers expense. It seemed best to at least avoid the many drinking holes to minimize chances for unpleasant, even unsettling experiences. NCL suggests to "party like a Norwegian", but what does that really mean? I did not feel that I, or anyone else, was safe or having much fun on this ship. Old ship with few thrills. Average food at best. A handful of friendly servers & bartenders, but pretty much all officers seemed quite inconvenienced to have customers onboard(!?!) I suggest these officers, including the captain, apply for jobs on a cargo ships. Skip this cruise (line). Read Less

My back ground: We are a retired couple, we had been cruised with Carnival, RC, Princess, MCS, Celebrity, HAL for about 20 times. This is the first time we cruise with NCL. More than half of our cruise are more than two weeks and back-to-back. Here the report from a straight shooter. - The Civitavecchia cruise port (1 hour train from Rome) is difference than the other cruise port. Passengers come to the port gate, then take a shuttle to the check-in building. For disembarking the shuttle will take the passengers from the cruise ship to the port gate. - We arrived at the port gate when the RAIN are falling. We, about 300 passengers, had to stand under the rain and wait for the shuttle bus took us to the check-in building. There are only two shuttle bus and it take about 10 minutes to go to the check-in building, so every 20 minutes the shuttles came and pick-up about 120 passengers. The NCL did not provided the UMBRELLA to their passengers. I remember when I cruise with the other cruise line, they provided (loan) the umbrella to their passengers when it was raining at the port of call. NCL don't have umbrella or the officers in charger did not care ? - For about half hour stand under the rain, my wife and can get on the shuttle bus to go to the check-in building. We SOAKING WET and COLD, and NCL served COLD water and COLD juice. I asked for a cup of hot tea or coffee, the answer is: We will get hot drink until we embarked the ship. Some kind of customers care/service that only NCL can provide heh! Or by the Italy law: Can NOT serve hot tea and hot coffee on the check-in area ? Where the heck is the officers in charge of the check-in area ? - After check-in, we have TO WALK UNDER THE RAIN WITH OUT CANOPY NOR UMBRELLA to get on the ship. We get on the ship soaking wet and while waiting for the luggage delivery to our cabin, my wife and I start sneezing from that moment on. - The "gourmet" food from the main dinning room is BAD, it's too salty or did not taste right. NCL must hire the so so (if I don't say bad) executive chef. - The steak is not tender, if you want a well done then you had to order medium rare, if you want a medium rare then you have to order rare, if you want rare then .... good luck. - One dinner they serve escargot, here how they did the escargot, there is only one or two escargot mix with about ten mushroom , stuff in middle of a bun with and" bath" with a dark brown gravy. But on the description they specified garlic and butter. I feel like I got cheat by the chef. - There is a Chinese Japanese restaurant on the ship called Ginza. They made udon soup with a small white noodle is NOT a udon noodle. And they made Chinese shasiu noodle soup with a small white noodle not a yellow egg noodle. And both of the broth are very similar. I am an Asian so I know Chinese, Japan, Vietnam, Thai , Singapore noodle very well. I guess that the chef know nothing about the Asian soup or don't care about the passengers. - After couple nights at the main dinning room, and two nights at the Chinese/Japanese restaurant , both of us start to eat dinner in the buffet. What a depress. - For 14 nights we have 3 productions shows, it kind of normal and below average. There are two bands on the area, one of them are good, and the main band with 5 instrument players and one singer , they get all talents but they pick the wrong song that made the dancing party very boring. The piano player has the talent to play piano but he did not have the voice of a singer, they also has the duet violin and cello that I am not interest so I don't know. - The food cook so bad by the chef that made all of the waiter in the dining room "take all the blame", I feel very sorry for those guys/gals. They tried their best but they can not change the taste of the food. - The house keeping is the same as all the other house keeping in other cruise ship, but they are the super star on the ship because the food is bad the waiter took the blame so the house keeping is the super star of all. - On the NCL Star on the fitness center you will get very few or limiting on the ocean view while you exercise. - There is no free sauna room on the NCL star, they sell the package include the use of sauna, steam room plus bla bla bla for 80 buck per day. I recall that Princess, MSC .... has a free sauna. - There is no laundromat on the NCl Star, I recall there are laundromat on Princess, carnival .... - NCL Star has no Captain dinner that you can have a free drink. - NCL they use the "casual cruising" policy so no formal night. And do not surprise if you see people cover with bath tower on the buffer area, and people with short and sandal in the main dinning room. Final words: I never cruise with NCL again, regardless how cheap their price is and much incentive they give. Read Less

Thoughts in no particular order: Seats in Stardust Theatre are too close together with knee knockers. Seats in Stardust Theatre are sloped down so you slide down your and off. Bathroom stalls in public areas are old and rusted with paint over the rust, need complete overhaul . Waiter is too busy to follow up on things you might need. Need asst waiter. Attention to detail is lacking. Theater shows were very good. Do not provide a paper list of amenities you receive in the suite (paper in suite), need to guess. Buffet on deck 12 is like a hospital cafeteria, needs complete overhaul. Fruits like cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, are cut up but you get the rind and must cut it off yourself. Other cruise companies cut the melons into squares or balls ( no rinds). Pool towels are large, fluffy and plentiful. Plenty of space to lay out in the sun, deck chairs are so-so. Staff was very friendly, customer service personnel were great. La Cucina restaurant is very nice inside. VERSAILLES restaurant is nice with old style interior . Aqua restaurant interior is boring. Ship has seen better days and needs to be sold. Overall, good value for the money due to transatlantic cruise. Water slides closed for no reason, opened on last day. On tv they have a navigation channel which shows ships position and weather and other items; the time is shown twice and don’t match, the pool temperature shows 28 celsius when the pool is empty, while sailing thru the Bahamas it shows we are in Spain: other words YOU cannot trust it Read Less

We wanted to see Rome and take a transatlantic cruise. Well, we saw Rome. Traffic is terrible. Remember the old saying, "when in Rome do as the Romans". Well, if we drove like the Italians insurance rates would be astronomical. Bumper to bumper, stop light to stop light. Took excursions to skip the line, Sistine Chapel. Must walk 1/2 mile to enter and then steps, steps, and more steps. Definitely not for old or infirmed. Rome at night was great. Saw many wonderful sights that are usually too full during the day. Saw Spanish Steps, Tivoli Fountain, Pantheon. Had a meal that was incredible and the gelato is to die for. All shuttle services were right on time and enjoyable. Would recommend learning a little Italian do converse with drivers or tour guide. Embarkation was pretty smooth. Had to transverse through the rainstorm to get on the ship. But, Norwegian did offer plastic raincoats to shelter from the rain. Had a medical emergency 2nd night with significant other having low blood sugar during the night. Had to call 911 and used nurse and doctor to stabilize her. Could not enjoy any excursions because the doctor was afraid of sugar problem recurring. He did not know what caused the problem. Melodic trio playing in Grand Atrium delivers 50's and 60's music along with more current selection. Can either sit in the coffee lounge or eat up in O'Sheehan's. The other enjoyment for me was the art auctions presented by Park and West. Got free champagne and looked at wonderful artworks, Max, Dali, Benoit, Kincaid, and many others. Read Less

Norwegian Star needs and overhaul both physically and managerial. The ship definitely needs updating, it seems stuck in years past. With a few exceptions the staff seems to be going thru the motions of working on a cruise ship. It reminds me of 'ho hum another day at work, when do I get off.' The buffet on deck 12 also reminds me of going to the government handout in communities. Or maybe a buffet at Walmart. And I do not want to put down Walmart. The entertainment was mediocre at best. Whatever company they secured the cruise director they need to get a refund. I was on a transatlantic on the Getaway where the cruise director knows how to secure a good lineup of entertainment that has most of the ship engaged. Also whose policy is it that allows passengers to take a yapping dog on the ship and have the that pass as a service dog. My neighbor trains dogs for service animals, they go thru a lot of training both to the aide of the user and their behavior in crowded environments. This dog was neither. Norwegian needs to address their requirements for service animals. Read Less

We took this cruise as we had done the trans Atlantic in 2014 on same vessel. This time it felt like a mosh pit in the buffet. Lots of rude fellow passengers. Screw freestyle cruising, thongs and pubic hair don't belong in the buffet line. Preferred main dining room. After being served way late after requesting gluten free meals on special order it was just easier to just try and pic menu items that were listed as GF. When we tried to special order the dining managers just said to pick other menu items instead of putting in a real special order the night before. We sailed as latitude rewards platinum for first time and other than quick boarding did not feel special. Never got the sparkling wine delivered though requested 3 times from Cruise Next. (if out, say it instead of insisting it would be delivered) No concierge as listed by cruise next welcome brochure. Guest service desk denied platinum was eligible. Disembarking was a cluster you know what. I realized late only idiots wait until announced to easy walk off as it seemed most passengers jumped the gun and lined up anyway. We didn't get priority disembarking as promised to platinum as no info was given out. When we reached gangway we saw a door with barrier that must have been for priority disembarkation from the stardust theater area. But this was a better cruise than January HK to Sydney of this year on same vessel. Port of Barcelona should of been scrubbed due to demonstrations and transportation strike but they had already changed the VI port for France. My main complaint that this had a lot of sick people on it coughing and sneezing. Yes, I boarded healthy and caught a cold and stayed abed two days with fever so as not to infect others. Most did not segregate themselves when sick. Entertainment was a lot of rehash of previous cruises. Ok for first time cruisers, I guess. Read Less

The cruise from Roma to Miami was fantastic. Our first time Transatlantic and it was delightful. The entire staff, from Captain Andersson to our steward Wei Linn, were special. Even when we came into contact with back-of-house utility staff and housekeeping staff, they would engage us in conversation, most always with a smile, asking hour our experience was. Thoroughly enjoyed the Noon addresses by Captain! The food was delicious, fresh, well prepared, seasoned and presented...from the morning breakfasts of fresh fruit, oatmeal and much-appreciated various curries in the Market Place, to the scrumptious hamburgers poolside, to the fantastic experiences in Cagney's, Moderno, Teppanyaki, Versailles and Sushi. The food and service, under Kevin's guidance, was appreciated, especially with the wide variety of food and service available for the 15-night cruise. The beverage program, though a bit pricey, was first rate. The generous pours and the cheerful tenders and cocktail servers were knowledgeable, efficient and pleasant. We enjoyed Norwegian's partnership with Robert Mondavi family of wines...also enjoyed the wine tasting seminar - - the sommelier was fantastic! We took advantage of the Thermal Spa package and did not regret it. The staff and facilities were outstanding...especially the quiet relaxation rooms after our workouts, with that gorgeous view aft! Nice, clean facilities and well-maintained. Cruise Director Tom and staff were spectacular...they Shined the entire cruise. Loved the shows, trivia, bingo, painting class, choir and many other activities. We look forward to our next sailing with Norwegian!! (Washie-washie!) Read Less
