Choose the Norwegian Jade for a twentieth anniversary cruise. Have cruised numerous times in the past but never with Norwegian and thought we would give it a try, seemed like a fair price. Ship was nice enough and stateroom was what we expected. Then it begins... upon touring the ship we noticed a large green waste management shipping container on the upper pool deck. We assumed this was to offload supplies. Embarkation day was clear and weather was great. At the beginning of the sail away party we were notified we would not be leaving on time due to fog? We went back to our stateroom balcony and noticed divers on the starboard side of the ship which we assumed was routine maintenance. After 7 hours of delays, casino closed and port taxes we were underway...in the heaviest fog I have ever seen. You could not see the Sunshine Skyway as we passed under it except for the lights on the bottom. No big thing, make the best of it. Later that night we were advised we would not make port in Key West due to time, not a big thing we live in Florida. So we decided to go to the pool where the construction dumpster remained closing one side of the upper pool deck. There was no wait service on the upper deck and all traffic was funneled through the deck chairs on either side. Then CONSTRUCTION began. Not maintenance, they were literally dismantling the waterslide and closed the kids pool to do so. Jackhammers and impact wrenches all day long. After waiting at the bar 45 minutes for a drink we said enough pool. Decided to sit on one of the decks and struck up a conversation with a crew member who advised we did not leave due to divers making repairs under the boat not fog. Being from the area imagine we missed the tide to make it under the bridge. We also decided to sign up for unlimited wifi to conduct some business back home. Waste of money, after 3 trips to the wifi supervisor we could not access any way to reach kids at home. He advised it must be a phone issue not wifi issue. Cruise director MIA all day although entertainment was good. Norwegian did decide to make port early in Cozumel for 2 full days in port. Again no Casino and duty free shop closed. Went ashore and amazingly our phones worked great on a corner taco stands wifi?!?! Again day 2 cruise director MIA unless they were collecting money for something. Saturday was NFL playoff day. A group of us that had met on the boat set up for the games after verifying numerous times that the game would be on a specific tv. Game time comes and we are told they need to contact the bridge to change the channel...WHAT, you have to call the guy that drives the boat to change a channel. Never saw that crew member again, another comes over and says its only a Spanish tv. So a member of our group goes to his room, grabs the remote and comes back and changes the channel so we can watch the game. Same day and weather was not great so they had some indoor activites (lucky since there was only one pool) Karaoke in the lounge, except the machine would not work. Deal or no deal in the theatre, except that broke halfway through and they had to refund everyones money. Then we were told we needed to make port 9 hours early to "make repairs to the underside of the ship" (remember the divers!) So again no casino, no duty free shopping and port taxes on drinks. During this adventure I approached guest relations on Friday to speak with a supervisor about my concerns. I was told there was no supervisor on duty but to call first thing Monday morning to address with corporate headquarters. Which I did and spoke to a very ignorant representative who advised she could not help me that all complaints must be in writing. Advised her this was not what was said on board but followed through. 15 business to reply to 2 page email about issues and it was a form letter!!! Left numerous messages for customer service supervisors with no response. Tried again today and waited over 30 minutes to get the voicemail of the supervisor. Decided to call booking and see if I could get through this way. Amazingly they answered the phone in 30 seconds. Sounds to me like a lot of complaints and not many new sailers. If Norwegian Cruise line would have addressed any of these issues in a timely manner I would have been willing to give them a second chance. However with their lack of customer service, the crews out right dishonesty and the lack of follow up on my complaint I will not be taking or recommending a Norwegian trip. Your money is much better spent on Carnival or Royal Caribbean. Read Less

Norwegian closed off the pool deck to renovate it during our vacation. According the captain, this was planned well before the holidays, but as travel customers we were never made aware (we would have postponed our trip to have a functioning ship) until we went to relax by the pool on the second day of the trip and found it totally under construction, filled with loud noises and caution tape blocking most of the area. Half the upper deck, the main pool, and the slide were all closed for the duration of our trip while Norwegian renovated the ship for charter cruises. The rest of the pool deck and pool bar were massively overcrowded with all the passengers having to be jammed into the other half of the pool deck and half the upper walking trail was also blocked off for a dumpster (lovely site on vacation) to collect the renovation debris. To add further insult, we returned to Tampa early the night before the end of our cruise for further ship renovations, therefore closing the ships stores and casino with little warning on the last night of our trip. Norwegian does not care about its passengers safety or comfort to undergo such big projects while people have spent their hard-earned money to be on vacation on their ship. I tried contacting Norwegian directly upon our return, but after many efforts, I was sent a form letter that states Norwegian believes this to be normal ship maintenance. If this this normal, I will never cruise Norwegian again! Read Less

Not friendly people has to ask some to smile, they ask of they were doing you a favor, even thought we pay for the cruise 5. The port and Shore excursions was not worth the money, maybe is the country we went to. 6. We booked this cruise with our friends (6 of us) because they were offering the free drink package for the first two guests in the cabin. It left out of Tampa which the town was beautiful but the cruise terminal was terrible! The check in process was very stressful and agents were screaming at you for paperwork before you even got to the front of the check in place and it smelled like a fart and they rushed you through like cattle. Overall cruise: 0 The entire cruise ship smelled like a fart the entire time, but mainly the hallways. The food in the buffet gave all of us the worst gas we have ever had and I'm still detoxing three days later. The food was nasty the French fries were worse than McDonald's. The blonde director lady who does dances, parties, etc was stressed and made you feel like you were stressing her out. I hated how they made their bartenders wear shirts that said what party was happening that night like example the "white hot party" it made you feel like they had to promote an event because it was going to be lame if they didn't. They made bartenders and all workers work even though they felt very sick and the bartenders would tell us they didn't feel good. You felt bad for them and you were worried about getting sick. We actually did get sick with a cold while on this cruise ship and we heard a lot of others coughing a lot too. Overall Service & beverages : 0 The service throughout the ship was terrible. No one asks for your drink order you have to go to the bar and wait for like ten others to order before you. We were sat in the grand pacific dining room and no one came over to wait on us for the first 20 minutes sitting there. We always had to ask for the special "bartender" to come over to be able to order our drinks we could not order them from our normal waiter which was pathetic. We wouldn't get our drinks until dinner was being served. We would wait ten minutes during a meal for a water to be refilled at every restaurant. Dining: 1 The buffet area was so small and tiny and didn't have enough seating. It was only on one side of the ship and on the back was the outdoors bar. The buffet would be closed off at like 3 every day and not open until 5 for dinner, which I thought was a little early so you had to go to the outdoor restaurant if you wanted any food. The blue lagoon had great fish and chips but you were not allowed to take any food out of that restaurant so if it was 10:30 and you wanted to go to your room to eat you couldn't you had to sit at the blue lagoon with shitty service and no water because they don't refill your drinks. Literally they do not refill your water drinks. The specialty dining restaurants were not very good either. Our friends tried every one with their dining package they said the Italian restaurant was terrible. We went to Cagneys Steakhouse for dinner one night which cost extra. We all ordered steaks and out of 6 steaks only 2 were cooked to order the rest were dry and had no taste. The bread and butter was amazing and the truffle fries and mac and cheese was amazing too. Water is scarce!! Norwegian no longer allows you to bring packages of bottled water/soda cans on board they want you to pay the 6.75 for one water bottle even if you have the drink package that costs $79 a day. I shouldn't have to pay that if I didn't drink one alcoholic drink all day. We would have to carry full cups of water to our room then the mini fridge was locked with beverages that are outrageous and they only open it If you want to buy their outrageous priced drinks so we couldn't even keep our water cold and we would never have enough water when in the room. Pool: 1 First off there is only two small pools. They are only filled with Salt water. The slide was rusting on the bottom part, (we never tried it was small) There were never any lounge chairs open in the pool area or the top deck. The bars were always packed they didn't have enough bartenders. The jacuzzi hot tubs didn't allow drinks into them neither did the pool which was a total bummer since every cruise I've ever been on allows that. Overall this cruise was a terrible experience and I will be going back to Royal Caribbean where service will always be top notch. I am upset that I paid what I did for this cruise. I will be paying the extra for a drink package on royal Caribbean that actually includes water bottles and they actually serve you. Read Less

i had a credit to spend.. I did not like it.. Harvest Caye is also a don't do.. Just an NCL attempt at pocketing more money.. Thank God only there for only 4 hours... Overpriced stores and eateries, a beach and a swimming pool.. Not much to offer after 3 other ports with all kinds of activity's and unique bargain shopping.. I didn't spend a dime there... If you are ever at this port don't bother to get off the ship.. Better yet book another cruise line that will take you to a real port. Belize or Grand Cayman is just as easy for the ship to get to. Cabin was a mini suite and just so so.. Was no bigger than a balcony on other ships. Bath tub was like being in a tin can.. Used the shower..Shore excursion to Eco park in Playa del Carmen was a big disappointment and not what was advertised at all.. but they would only refund 25%.. Shore excursion desk was constantly closed and staff not helpful at all. Not much info... The only good thing was a snorkel trip to Underwater Museum in Roatan.. it was great but not advertised well.by the ship. Only 8 of us on the snorkel, which made it great for us.. built around a 500 year old ship wreak and the reef is a few yards away... Most beautiful part of the reef i have ever seen.. and i have been to several.. Too many variety's and colors of fish and corals to count.. Shows were so so. went to 2. Main dinning room food was so so.. Up charges for a steak,,, Who wants to eat meat loaf and lasagna on a cruise??? Specialty restaurants so so.. Overpriced and poor service at Cagney's.. the irony is they out 2 pepper shakers on the table no salt and I unknowingly ruined my own steak,, No lobster on the menu of any specialty.. Bars?? Several times I ordered diet coke and got regular. When you are diabetic like I am this is bad.. Try another cruise line ,, but do go to the Underwater Museum in Roatan.. You wont regret it Read Less

We booked The Jade for our 25th wedding Anniversary. It started out when we went to the dining hall the 1st night and had a cold meal. The potato looked and tasted like it was left over from the previous cruise. Our waiter never came back to the table after dropping off the dinner. We did want more drinks and desert but after waiting for 20+ minutes we got up to leave. We reached the staircase when the waiter came to us and asked if we wanted desert. We rejected and went up to the buffet. At the buffet they were slicing fresh meat and potatoes. We cancelled the rest of our dinner reservations for the dinning room. Now to the fun stuff. We had a handicap mini-suite the tile grouting was bad. The shower leaked into our suite and the hallway. We told the cabin Steward about it and then left for our excursion through the Mayan Ruins. It was very hot and we going back to the room to cool off and relax before dinner. We walked in and they had a commercial dehumidifier and a blower fan in our room. They also turned the heat up to high, The person in charge of the cabin steward came in and told us they want to move us to a new room. The room they offered was an inside room with no windows and a third of the size of the room we paid to enjoy. I refused to leave and turned back on the air conditioner. The fix they decided to do was put a bead of silicone around it. I told them it wasn't going to work, but what do I know. Two days later the room was soaked again. We left for our excursion again and came back to a smaller dehumidifier and the heat cranked up. This time they regrouted the tile and we could not use our bathroom for 24hrs. They did give us the other room to use for the bathroom but we could not sleep in there as it was too small. So now we are heading out to see for a full day to return back to Tampa when a water main broke down below. No Toilets, No Water. It took them all day and half the night until it was fixed. This was not the way I wanted to spend my 25th anniversary and will not cruise with them again unless they try to make it right. I have cruise Disney and Carnival many times before and will go back to them. Read Less

Took the Norwegian Jade, first cruise out of Tampa after re-positioning. A week prior to the cruise, I called Norwegian to see if I could get an upgrade cabin. I was told there was a room left, told the location of the cabin and would be upgraded if I could hold. When the agent returned, she said that she checked with her supervisor and there were no cabins left. Either she didn't know what she was talking about, or she lied. Upon boarding the ship and ready to sail at 4pm, we sat at the Port of Tampa for an additional 3 hours due to some mechanical issues. The ship had been in port for 3 days prior to sailing, so I was uncertain why they wouldn't do a "pre-check" of the ship so it would be ready to sail on Sunday. If you wanted a drink while in port, we were subject to the 7% tax while in port, which in my opinion, should have been waived since it wasn't our fault we were sitting in port for so long. Also, we did not receive any information or updates why we were still waiting to sail. I was given the Ultimate Beverage package as an free upgrade when booking my trip, but that turned into the Unlimited Beverage package. Beware, it doesn't include water. Drink all of the alcohol you can, but you can't have water. You also can't get coffee except for in the buffet or restaurants. If you're scheduled to go to Harvest Caye, the new Norwegian Island at Belize, be aware that nothing is included on the island. You have to pay for your drinks and food, unlike other islands owned by Royal Caribbean, etc. No sense in getting off the ship unless you want to do an excursion (parasailing, zip line, etc.). To me, this is double dipping the guest. There should have been some kind of notice, either written in the day planner or a sign when you get off the ship. They are not being transparent. When you go to guest services to voice your concerns, you get a blank stare from the staff. They also will tell you they can't do anything because it's all the rules of Corporate office and will forward your concerns. They did state that they agree with me, but there isn't anything they can do. So, they have to listen to all the complaints knowing Corporate doesn't care about their guests on the cruise. It's all about the money. I took 5 friends with me and we all had issues with this cruise line. Listening to other passengers on the ship decks, it seemed as if most people were unhappy as well. Terrible service. In order to get a drink from any bar you had to stand in a long line (30 minute waits). If a bar ran out of a drink they would not order another bottle, you would have to go to a different bar. Very little wait staff around the pool. Buffet food was awful (penne pasta with hot dogs cut up in it, YUCK). Bread on the ship always seem stale except in the Italian Restaurant. First port day (Honduras) had to tender in. They used the life boats as tenders and most of them didn't work. We ended up not getting off the ship. Second day (Belize) they used the big shore tenders but they had medical emergencies and had to use the tenders to take patients off (Wouldn't have minded if they had explained what the problem was). Ended up took 2 hours to get off the ship. Didn't realize it was spring break when I booked. College students running up and down the halls, banging on doors, yelling half the night. It was not until the 5th night of the cruise did the staff finally do something about it. Cabin was kept very clean but the rest of the ship seem dirty. No trash cans around the pool area to place trash and very little staff to clean up. Massage was mediocre at best and a 18% gratuity was added without asking about the service. Read Less

Short and sweet----DO NOT TRAVEL ON THIS SHIP!! -horrible services through the whole ship - not enough staff - overworked and crabby staff - lines for everything - not enough pools - up charge for good meals and drinks - dinner took way to long, had horrible service, and food was boring, bland, and most of the time COLD ! - they say "free" special package but you then have to pay the taxes for it! $100 doesn't sound free to me! - free beverage package only lets you get one drink at a time but the lines take over 15 mins to get through with little to no servers roaming about. - beds uncomfortable- thin foam on a twin bed. We had a queen bed aka two really uncomfortable twins pushed together with a huge uncomfortable crack down the middle. Nothing says romantic evening more than a huge crack that you have to lay on! Pillows were flat. I had to use three just to make up for 1 regular pillow. ( which I waited on hold for 30 mins just to ask for another 1 which then took 30 mins to get) I thought I was upgrading from carnival but whoa was I completely wrong! I would take carnival over this cruise any Day! Though after listening to the line waiting over60 mins to get a tender, it sounds like the best bang for your buck is with Royal Caribbean! All of their people seemed happy with their cruise! Read Less

This was the most inept crew I have ever dealt with. The most important screw up was the SHIP SPONSORED TOUR in Cozumel. It was the Salsa & Salsa. NCL sub contracts with a company called Tropical Tours. Lulu loaded us into taxi cabs and sent us to the resort. The making salsa was great but the trouble came afterwards. She told everyone leaving right away to get into a line. Lulu put 8 people into each cab. The cab went to the cruise port. As soon as we got there I realized that this was not where we were picked up. I kept telling the cab driver this was wrong but the rest of the cab were on Splendor of the Seas and this was where it was docked. The cab driver did not understand English and insisted we get out of the cab. I went to an official at the port and asked where the NCL was. He said 4 miles away. I was not sure I had very much money left and thought we would have to walk which was not going to happen in 85 degrees and a 75 year old with asthma. I had visions of the ship leaving without us since they would have figured we got off in Cozumel to shop or drink. I tore my back pack apart and found $10. I went to an official at the port and they got me a cab. Let's remember that this was one of those VERY EXPENSIVE SHIP SPONSORED TOURS that guarantee your safety. They will deliver you to the ship and the ship will not leave without you but that was not going to happen in this case. I could have done the tour for 1/3 the cost and been treated this way. The topper came when we got back on board and talked to guest services. They said I had to talk to shore excursions. At 6 when shore excursions opened I went in to explain what happened. She was so rude it was unbelievable. She said it would have only taken us 20 to 30 minutes to walk that distance and that we would not have missed the ship. She just did not understand that he is 75, overweight and has asthma. We were not making 4 miles in a day yet alone 20 minutes. It was A SHIP SPONSORED EXCURSION - GUARANTEED TO GET YOU BACK SAFELY YET IT DID NOT AND NCL SIMPLY DID NOT CARE. Use the cheap tours at the end of the pier they are just as reliable as the extremely expensive ship tours. After quite a while of wrangling, she gave us back $40 for the cab fair. DO NOT TAKE THE SHIP SPONSORED TOURS, THEIR WORD IS WORTH NOTHING. In addition to that when we embarked, I noticed that there was no stamp on our card for the ultimate beverage package. I mentioned it to clerk who looked in the computer and said it was not there. We showed her the confirmation and she said we would have to go to guest services. We went up to guest services and the line was very short. They said there was nothing they could do and would have to get in touch with the main office in Miami. Really!!! I have a confirmation and you have a computer right there. Nothing like starting your vacation in stress. We also had $50 credit against each shore excursion. SAME STORY. These things got straightened out the next day but that was way too long for this problem. We also had a confirmation for some free photos only the photo department did not show that and that problem did not get straightened out until day 6 when it was too late to take many photos. Once again no compensation was given. Then we had gnats in our bathroom. They sent up pest control who knew all about the problem. He said they came from the bathroom drain. Most be a common problem. Makes you feel the ship is clean, doesn't it. ?????? The food was hit and miss. In the main dining room I ordered a steak dinner and got a piece of steak and 3 french fries. No vegetable at all. Sure I could have ordered the vegetable afterwards but I could not believe that felt that was dinner. The supervisor at Guest Services would not come out of their office and left the poor girl to deal with one problem after another. I felt sorry for her because we were really getting frustrated. I would have given this cruise a minus if I could have The one place that handled things correctly was the spa. I had gone up to get one of their special and they forgot to tell the girl so I sat there for over a half hour. I got up and told them to forget the service. Sylvia who runs the spa ran to see what was wrong and when she came back was very apologetic and gave me a free message for my inconvenience. This is how you should treat people. I understand things happen but being rude and not addressing problems is not the way to handle clients. The supervisor of guest services and the young lady in shore excursions both were horrible examples of how a client should be treated. You might want to think twice before you go on this ship. This was our 3rd cruise w Norwegian in less than 9 month (Epic 4/2015 & Getaway 9/2015), and we were utterly disappointed. We opted for Norwegian after having such great times on the other 2 ships. We vacation roughly every 8 weeks and find cruising the most convenient since we live in FL and have so many ports here. We have never had a poor experience on Princess, Holland, or Viking Cruises. The Norwegian Star started off w walking into a dirty balcony cabin. Things went downhill from there. Norwegian is advertising quite a bit of "freebies" but in all actuality they are adding charges for nearly everything and have reduced so many on board activities it is pathetic. They are allowing 3rd and 4th passengers to room w the 1st and 2nd passenger free of charge. What this equates to is countless teenager and kids rooming w their parents or grandparents and basically taking over the ship. This ship caters to the elderly and to teens. If you are wanting upscale nights w a nice dinner and relaxing music and dancing in the evenings, this is NOT the ship for you. There is NO nightlife on this boat. Other than the same show at 7pm and repeated at 9pm, there is not much left to do. They have 2 pianos w no dance floors and bands that basically play instrumental, elevator style music while the elderly are passed out asleep listening to them in chairs. Starting around 9pm, its teen time every night w kids anywhere from 12-18 years old, running wild and sneaking into bars getting drinks then acting out all night and the staff are no where to be seen that are reportedly monitoring these kids. Don't be fooled by Norwegian's promotional offers as it not worth it in the end and Princess and Holland lines offer so much more and in the end come out to less money. Read Less

Since this was a family trip, (15 of us 7 kids) we thought it would be nice to cruise. It was over President's week, and this seemed like it would work best. It turned into one of the worst vacations I have ever taken. Check for 15 people seems to be something they are not used to. We checked in by family, but the ones waiting were nearby. There was a cruise employee that stood there and told us we were on the wrong line, it was only for suites, (which we were booked in), and if we didn't have suites they would throw us out of line. Then she stood there telling us to keep moving to another area as we were blocking the way. We were 15 people! The pool slides were damaged and the kids backs got all cut up. The apparent solution was to put a band aid on the wound, not close and repair the slide. The kiddie pool area was so slippery the kids fell several times. It was supposed to be for kids under 10, but of course there were older kids there rough playing and jumping into the pools. There was never a cruise member supervising. Our rooms were under the pool deck, and someone thought it would be a good idea to plan all night dance parties every night. I wouldn't mind them ending by 12, but all night? Not a good idea. They automatically include service charges. Most cruise lines do, but if you request them to be removed, they do it. Not Norwegian. So, when I requested an adjustment to our service charges, I was told I had to submit a form (within 30 days) and I would have my refund within 2 weeks. It is May 4, and I am still waiting. I have called repeatedly, and always get a different runaround reason why it hasn't been processed yet. And there is always a wait time of at least 30 - 50 minutes when I call customer service. Today, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told there are none that will talk to me. I insisted, so I was transferred to someone who was on the phone. I am still waiting for a call back. I would never cruise on Norwegian again, and would never recommend them to anyone. Read Less

Our first impression of the cabins were small. So small. Then there was the dirt factor. We had pills left on our floor from previous cruisers (we assumed). The sheets were dirty and worn. The couch in our room was supposed to be yellow we gathered but who could tell with the dirt on it. The bed was not the best but it wsa passable. The food was repetitive but on the whole it was good. The staff in the restaurants were nice and some friendly. The desk staff were not up on the ports we stopped at. We were told to book excursions to see anything. We did book an exursion on Roatan to see the island but ended up stopping at the small stands on the roadside most of the time. We went to see the sunken ships. Yep. Never again. Our room steward found my ring in the sheets while making our bed and left it on the made up bed for me. I so appreciated it. Under our bed we found a plastic bag of used white towels. While disembarking the ship was being washed. We thought it was raining out but we were just getting wet from the ship wash. We have sailed 4 times. Twice with Princess and twice with Norwegian. We cruised on norwegian in europe october 2015 and won a free trip playing bingo. the cruise was lovely, the food and service great. We decided on this particular itinerary since a few of the ports were new to both of us. the nightmare began with a 2.5 hour line up to board the ship! at this point, we had no idea that some passengers had been sick on the previous ship and therefore they were sterilizing the ship and apparently this led to the first delay. We boarded the ship (finally) and were told that we were on a sterilized alert but this ban would be lifted within 24 hours. this meant that all buffet services were closed off with approximately 1/8 of the buffet food available and more lengthy lineups. the staff who was serving you at the buffet were not skilled in this area and had difficulty with both english and knowing how to place food on the plates!!! We were unable to touch a glass, plate or dispense soft drinks for yourself! the buffet choices of food were less than what you would expect at a hospital cafeteria!!!! even the french fries were cold and their was one tiny lot of them! As a result of the buffet being essentially unavailable, the restaurants were crowded!!! you had to obtain a pager and wait for it to go off! upon seating in the restaurants that were understaffed, we often waited over 20 minutes to be even acknowledged before our orders were taken. each and every time we asked how long this situation would be, we were told an additional 24 hours. after 4.5 days the ban was lifted! Ironically during this time of mass sterilization, we boarded the ship from belize and were not even asked to sanitize our hands!!! We brought this to the attention of the front desk and had no response to this at all. This leads me to believe that if this cause for sanitation was only as a result of a previous illness, the buffets would have been fully stocked with glorious foods that a cruiser would expect regardless of restrictions and the service would be sufficient with the correct number of staff per passenger. we had two days out at the pool, where we were never asked if we wanted a drink. I understand norwegian cruise lines may be suffering financially and i am certain that with the unnecessary food and staff cut backs that they made at the passengers expense on this trip helped make up their losses!!!!! We will never cruise norwegian again!!!! P.s the free cruise cost us a bundle!!!! $615.00 usd for upgrade to outside cabin plus fees and another $200.00 usd for gratuity plus airfare etc....the most expensive one week trip we have had in years!!! Note.....if you win the cruise, say no thank you! P.s.s. did i mention that when we booked the ‘free cruise’ and paid the port taxes etc…they actually cancelled it on us without advising us. norwegian told us that they had contacted our travel agent and advised it was cancelled for no apparent reason. here is the kicker……we were told when we booked the free cruise with norwegian that you are not allowed to use your travel agent for reservations, you must contact the free cruise line only. we did exactly that and yet they still cancelled the cruise! thankfully we noticed a refund on our visa card for the port charges and called them and after lengthy converstations, they reinstated the cruise. beware!!!! When looking at cruises on NCL web site, it came with 4 free offers. When I called to book. whoop No. I booked 30 to 31 days prior to sailing. No free offers even if the web site said there was. Ok, not a deal breaker for me. My issues started on the ship itself. 1) We were celebrating husbands BDAY. Booking agent said he would have a cake in his room for the occasion. Not so, I asked the room steward about it, he knew nothing and brought a cheap card saying happy BDAY stamped from the captain. Went to customer service on a couple of occasions for items below and they knew nothing and were not helpful at all. 2) Booking agent and photos of ship/room said we would have a seating area in our balcony cabin with couch that pulled out into sofa bed for my son who was with us. Again not so, he slept on a tiny bed hanging from the wall at the foot of our bed with a ladder that came down into the tiny walkway, turn on a light if you need to get up in the middle of the night or you will face plant walking past it. Again customer service people just said "I will ask how your cabin it set up". That's it.. Nothing else. 3) The ship was small, couldn't get to the pool due to the amount of kids there. There are 2 large slides that take up half the pool deck that were closed more than they were open. People were arguing over lounge chairs b/c there was not enough to go around. People would go out at the break of dawn and "reserve" the chairs by putting towels out. Even though there are tiny little signs saying this is not permitted. At night the teenagers came out to replace the kids. There was an "adult" hot tub in the front of the ship but you couldn't get in it due to the number of teenagers in it. The music was all teenage music almost everywhere on the ship played so loud you couldn't even understand it, Forget trying to talk to someone sitting 2 feet away, wasn't gonna happen. They played mostly teenage music and my son even said it was so loud it distorted the music. 4) We must have been in a room under a service room. Ice machine dropping ice all night long. Super loud and the green giant must have been up there helping b/c it sounded like he was stomping to get the ice to fall into a bucket. Never slept a solid night and couldn't sit outside by the pool b/c of the teenagers. 5) Getting off the ship for the shore stuff was a nightmare. Once you could get off the ship the locals would literally grab your arm and drag you into the shop if you tried to walk past them. Not a pleasant thing at ALL. 5B) Rotan Honduras.....what a dump. I CANNOT believe this is even a stop for cruise ships. Save your self the money and hassle IF you go there stay on the ship. My local garbage dump or even downtown Detroit would have better sights than this place. All destinations really pushed you for tips to the point of being scary. 6) Drinks. OUTRAGIUOSLY EXPENSIVE. 5 beers $35 get the 6th one "free". Small mixed drink $8. Glass of wine I was told was $11. Can od soda $2.50 AND DON"T FORGET THE TIP>>>>What it cost on land triple it on the ship. Read Less

Well first, our group consisted of 8 people, ages ranging from 21-28. When 4 of us called to book our cruise months in advance, the Norwegian agent/representative that helped us over the phone completely lied to us and tricked us into upgrading our room to an ocean view room which costs more money than a regular state room. He lied by saying if we upgraded to ocean view all 4 of us would receive an ultimate drink package (UBP). We couldn't believe it and asked him multiple times to confirm this which he did so we booked it. Come to find out once we're on the ship, only 2 out of the 4 had the UBP and the other 2 had a soda package! When we went to guest services to complain they were completely unhelpful and weren't even equipped to handle the problem, all they did was say they can email the Miami office and it would take a day for a response. We decided to take matters into our own hands and call the Miami office (don't know why guest services couldn't do this) and talked to one of their representatives who once again could not help us at all and did not care that one of their own workers lied to us to make us pay more money. They did not offer any compensation or try to fix the problem. When we looked at all our emailed confirmations there was no record of any packages on our accounts or details of the promotion, all it said was the price that was charged to each person and that we were in ocean view so I'm surprised they didn't try to take away all drink packages. After being stuck with only 2 drink packages and half the room being mad and jealous of the other 2 people, it made tensions between our group strong and put a whole damper on the vacation. We tried to make the best of it anyway but even that was hard because the activities on board and clubs/lounges are all geared towards the older crowd. There was only one night club each night with the same DJ who sucked. He refused to take requests and the music he was playing was EDM and electronic which no one wants to hear when you're trying to dance and have fun on vacation. When we complained about that to guest services once again they didn't care and didn't take us serious because of our age. Then after befriending the service staff, who were our drink waiters, they informed us that they are lying to us and that they can change the music and that it is not a pre-recorded set list and they are allowed to take requests. We were FURIOUS and decided to just drink and dance and try to have fun. The days off the ship and at each port were the highlight of the trip. We did 2 excursions in Honduras and Belize and loved both of them. We did the snorkel and sail in Honduras and the zip line and cave tubing in Belize. Both were wonderful and being able to get off the horrible ship was nice. Then, last day at sea we were expecting a deck party all day because the previous cruise we all have been on was with carnival which was a huge party by the pool each day at sea. This was not the case with Norwegian. They played CHRISTMAS MUSIC THE WHOLE TIME. I know it was a December cruise but no one wants to party by the pool to Christmas music all day. We finally got a huge group of people who also were hating the Christmas music to start shouting and chanting to change the music. We made such a huge scene that finally they couldn't ignore us any more and one of the cruise director's staff went on the microphone and said he has no control of the music and is not able to change it because it is pre-recorded. We knew he was lying because of what other staff had told us so once again we went to guest services who did nothing and were rude to us and didn't take us seriously because of our age. So finally we found a group of moms who also hated the music and took them with us to guest services. FINALLY, guest services told us to talk to the musical director if we have a problem because that is who is in charge of music (ok why didn't you tell us this the first night!) so we take the musical director with us out to the pool deck to change the music and once he heard the Christmas music playing outside he said, "is this really what has been playing all day?" We responded by saying, "yes! It's been playing the whole cruise!" He said he had no idea and that no one had told him! Which is funny because we complained multiple times, multiple days to guest services about the music and they never told him! By 4 p.m. On the last day at sea the music was finally changed to party music and EVERYONE on the pool deck started cheering! It must have been extremely embarrassing for Norwegian and its staff to know almost their whole ship was hating their music and was unhappy. Also, the buffet food sucked, it was almost impossible to find pizza and the only had burgers and fries each day. The only 24 hr food option was o'sheehans restaurant that only had like 3 food options. Besides all of this, the service staff and drink waiters were amazing and nice and we became friends with some of them. Also, the shows by the performers were amazing! Read Less

We chose this ship because of our daughter, with 3 kids it was allot less expensive for them to take their first cruise. My husband and I are experienced cruisers. We've been on allot of different cruise lines including Norwegian before, but this ship is the worst. The pros: 1 . Embarkation was really fast and efficient. No long lines. 2. We got lucky and got Ultimate dining package for all the nights. Dined in all the specialty restaurants, because main dining and buffet were really bad. 3. There were 4 nice shows. The Russian ballet/acrobatic couple was really good. 4. Nice size showers with the glass doors. Cons: 1. Air conditioning in the rooms is really bad because they have one unit serving hundreds of cabins. There was no air flow and temperature in the cabin would not go lower than 21-22 degrees, which is way too warm for us. Because of the bad air flow, air did not circulate and there was no way to get any fresh air in to the room. We got the fan, but that did not fix the problem. I woke up with the migraine every day but the cruise line did nothing. 2. Our cabin was so small, that there was no way to go around the bed on one side and on the other side there was the bunk on the wall and I kept hitting my shoulder on it when i passed by. There are nowhere to store the luggage as they don't fit under the beds, so we had to store them against the wall, which took the free space between the bed and the wall. As the ship comedienne said, you can literally switch on the TV with your toes from anywhere in the cabin, including the bathroom. 3. The bed was terrible. Old saggy mattresses on a aluminum beds, hard as a rock. Bedding was quite old and even though it was laundered, always stained and torn. And pillows were hard as a rock. 4. Glass doors on the shower and the toilet were falling off the railing right on top of my foot. 5. Food left allot to be desired. Breakfast was actually not bad, an egg station, the usual pancakes, french toast, bacon and so on. But lunch at the buffet was terrible. The quality of meats and fish was really low, everything was dripping with fat and souses. Just a rotisserie chicken would be so much nicer. Salad veggies were not always fresh. 6. Dishes were always dirty. I am not sure how it's possible but just taken out of the dishwasher dishes had caked on food and specks of dried food from previous meals. it was disgusting. One time we had to go 3 times for ice cream because the dishes were dirty. 6. Not to mention that all the dishes are cheap plastic. Reminded me of an army or a jail cafeteria. With cheap, uncomfortable chairs that were falling apart. Dirty tables, that were rarely wiped. And dirty dishes on the tables, because the servers were not able to handle it on time. 7. The pool is so small that more than 4 people were not able to swim at the same time. And water in the pool is not being heated. So always quite cold. Takes some getting used to. 8. There are no lounges in the shade. We had to move our lounges in to the table area to get some shade as it was pretty hot and humid. Lounges are very uncomfortable because there is no mattresses on it. Just a towel. 9. At 2PM every day the band would come to play by the pool. The quality of music as well as sound quality was so bad. It was loud to the point where people had to leave the pool area. I could not stand listening to the boring music day after day. 10. There was no place on the entire ship to relax. few lounges on the 7th deck were always occupied. but right in front was this game where people have to hit one metal disk with another one and the noise of those disks hitting each other and the lounges was very disturbing. There was no comfortable sofas or chairs in the entire ship. 11. Atrium area has area where one can relax and listen to the music, but the chairs are very uncomfortable, music was boring and no place to dance because the entire atrium was always busy with the ship photographers doing the same old poses all evening. 12. One of the bands was playing in the spinner bar(not sure I got he name correctly). Also very boring music, not fun to dance to. 13. No matter how hot it was in our cabin or outside, in the atrium and in the restaurants it was freezing. The kids was getting sick from such a difference in temperature. We all had to wear cardigans or jackets in the evening. 14. There were no fun games by the pool. After 10 parties were on the schedule, but every time my daughter went hoping to have some fun, it was dead. The music was boring and no people. Even though there were allot of young folks on the ship, nightlife was nonexistent. 15. Speaking of sick kids. The walls between cabins are extremely thin. Not even walls, just thin plastic. We could hear kids next door crying and sneezing half the night. And in detail every conversation our neighbors had. Good thing we speak several foreign languages, so I am sure our conversations remained more or less private, but I am sure they also heard everything that was going on in our cabin as well. 16. We loved the steak house, the french bistro and the Brazilian bbq restaurants. Teppanyaki restaurant, if you can call it a restaurant, was a disappointment. First of all it's just 1 table for 12 in the sushi restaurant. The meal lasted about half an hour. The chefs kind of demonstrated some craft with their knives but that was before they started preparing a meal. We pre-ordered our meats and sea food. They grilled it really quick without demonstrating cutting technic and without any fun. The guy who was grilling veg and meats used so much butter, that everything was just swimming in fat. I never saw anybody use that much fat in any of the Teppanyaki restaurants. And there were no way of ordering seconds or getting more vegetables. And the meal was over. In less than an hour we were out and the next set of guests arrived. Just ridiculous. 17. With all our complains, we still had to pay the ridiculous amount of tips. 18. I can't say that our room was always spotless clean. So to top it all off, I got an athletes foot on one of my toes and my toe was itching like crazy. Had to treat it with the anti-fungal ointment. 19. And last but not least. Non of our wet clothes ever dried in our room, so I had to wear the same wet beach skirt every day. And brought bag full of wet clothing home. I am sure I forgot to mention few other ugly details. I am also sure that those who cruised first time, like or daughter, enjoyed every minute. But we can honestly say, that this was the worst, the most boring cruise ever. So I say good buy to Norwegian, never again. Read Less

As a veteran cruiser with Carnival, I was excited to take my family of 5 on a Norwegian Cruise Line and see how it feels to "Cruise Like A Norwegian" and boy was I dissatisfied! We drove directly to Tampa from North Carolina bursting with excitement to be on our 5th cruise and 1st with Norwegian. We cruised on the Norwegian Star for 7 days and hit the popular ports of Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. After going through the onboarding processes we found our room, 5120, an oceanview picture window cabin, and the first word out of both of my wife's and my mouth was "small". We took a spin standing still, got the logistics of the room down and the urge to use the potty hit me. Well, if I thought the room was small, the bathroom was even worse! I sat on the toilet, unable to close the partition and by the end of the cruise, my thigh had a nice red indentation from leaning on the partition wall. To dry off after the shower I had to step out into the room. IT WAS SMALL! We didn't let the size of the room get the best of us as this is a cruise ship and rooms are going to be small, the room was much smaller than we are used to with Carnival, but we were not willing to let the size of the room ruin the vacation. After our quick potty break and room tour, we met the rest of our party, Grandma and Grandpa, for lunch in the Market Cafe a.k.a the buffet on the 12th deck. The overall environment of the Market Cafe reminds one of a school cafeteria with tables, drink stations and poor quality food. We gathered our kids and ventured up to the buffet line where we were welcomed by nobody, unless you want to consider the cheap food options as your host. Our first pass included the fruit station which was filled with the least expensive fruit you can buy! Your cantaloupe, honeydew melons, apples, bananas, pears and the finest canned peaches money can buy (I'm sure). My kids were saddened to see the absence of such fruit as strawberries, blueberries and other "berry" fruits that we've become accustomed to eating on Carnival and at home. Drink options included the typical stuff, lemonade, unsweet tea, water and a few bagged juice options. The hot lunch options included burgers and hot dogs, beans, fries, spaghetti with a lovely canned sauce, etc. Cold lunch options were some sandwiches such as tuna and ham and cheese and fruit. After lunch we navigated the ship, found the camp and registered our 3 boys, and found the many wonderful dead ends that the Norwegian Star has to offer! This ship feels like the Winchester house and, what with all the rocking, a fun house all in one. The camp is on the 13th deck but can only be accessed through the market cafe by stairs or the most aft elevator, on lower decks there are 4 elevators but only 1 takes you to deck 13. It's quite fun to figure out which one goes to 13 on a busy elevator day, which is every day. My wife LOVES shopping on the ship and boy were we UNimpressed with the 2, yes count them 2, shops on board the Norwegian Star. Shop 1 includes your standard NCL branded gear, none of which we bought and shop 2 includes the jewelry, perfumes and cologne, and the pharmacy stuff. Yeah, woohoo... After we spent a couple of hours maneuvering around the ship we decided to meet grandma and grandpa for dinner in the Aqua dining room at 6 p.m. The decor is modern which turned off grandma and grandpa and the service we received turned off the entire table. The atmosphere was LOUD! There was no conversation at our table. I ordered the chef's special which was a "strip loin" steak. I have no idea what a "strip loin" steak is but I can tell you that it's cheap and quite tough. I also stuck with a glass of water which was refilled once in the 2.5 hours we were at dinner. Our first glasses of water took 5 minutes to receive, not too shabby, but the 2nd, and final glass, took 45 minutes to refill and nothing after. However, the table that ordered lots of liquor got lots of attention. My wife ordered a salmon which came with a half of a broccoli stalk, which I heard tasted like broccoli which believe it or not is a bonus. Day 2 was a day at sea. A day that we decided to take our 2 small children to the kid's pool at the very back of the ship. My wife and I did not dress to swim as we wanted to get an idea of how the pool is as we don't like swimming with or around a ton of people. My kids loved the water slides, but they didn't like all the falling they did! The floors of this area were slick and had nothing to grip. My youngest boy, 5 has bruises all over his back and my 6 year old slip and fell, hit his head and fell into the 2.5 foot pool with about a 3 foot drop. FUN! FUN! FUN! The only, ONLY good thing about this area for us was the hot tub which was a lower temperature for the kids. What we quickly learned on day 2 of our cruise was that the camps are only open for 3 hours before lunch, 2 hours between lunch and dinner and 3 hours after dinner. Each meal break was 2 hours. So, we had a lot of running around to pick kids up from camp because they close. Carnival's camp closes rarely, which is a great big difference and a bummer when you're trying to be on vacation. Day 3 was our first port day at Roatan, the port was fantastic! We had fun shopping and being shown around by locals working for tips. Our personal tour guide was a group of 3 young boys of about 10. I tipped them each $2 at the end of our day and they were delighted! However, before going out to Coxen Hole (Roatan's capital) we had breakfast at the Market Cafe which included the staples of bacon, sausage, the runniest scrambled eggs you'll ever look at (because you won't eat them) and your pancakes and French toasts. The coffee is the worst coffee you'll ever taste, I suspect because you can buy the decent coffee at their coffee bar on deck 7. After we enjoyed the day in Roatan, we returned to the ship for lunch which included some of the best leftover sides from the previous night's dinner, boy oh boy, we were so glad to see the old standards on the next day's buffet. (Sense the sarcasm?) The buffet food is slightly worse than Golden Corral but not as bad some something you'd pick up unwrapped in a gutter in NYC, however, if it's wrapped and in the gutter it may make a run for being better than the food on the Norwegian Star. Dinner was in the Versailles dining room which had Victorian decor and was their "dress up" night. As this is FREESTYLE dining, they won't call it formal night and it is totally optional. We did not participate but the food was the same pitiful mess, however our service was much better as served by waiters from the O'Sheean's Irish Pub in their polo shirts. We saw the show which was typical, a musical revue with leggy lady dancers and fit men twirling around. Day 4 was a day in Belize.. Which was downright scary. We spent about an hour or so in Belize and returned to our room since we couldn't venture out into Belize City without going through a stringent security check and I didn't feel like taking off my shorts. Back on the ship was an exact replay of day 3 with the exception of now my youngest doesn't want to go to camp, he'd rather sit in the room with Grandma and Grandpa. Camp must have been a terrible thing and by the end day 6, we abandoned the camp altogether. We decided to eat dinner in Versailles again. I showed up in a button up shirt and jean shorts, this is FREESTYLE cruising, after all. However, I was told that I had to change into pants, which is certainly not FREESTYLE and like I said before I didn't feel like taking off my shorts. So I begrudgingly change into khaki pants and return to my family who was seated and looking peckish from the lack of food because of the jungle gym type path I had to take to the 5th floor room. Versailles is on deck 6 but only accessible by a single elevator similar to the camp. But, the elevator doesn't go down to 5. Therefore, I had to go UP to 7 walk half the distance of the ship to go down to 5 and to my room. I then had to reverse the route to get back. After returning to the table, I noticed quite a few servers wearing the O'Sheean's Irish Pub green polo shirts.. I guess the dress code doesn't apply to their own staff. We decided to skip the show tonight and just go to bed to pass the time. Day 5, Costa Maya, a place we've been to before. Breakfast was the same disgusting stuff served daily. The port was excellent as we remembered. We swam in the sea and at the pool. A great day. Lunch was gross, dinner was at O'Sheean's and tasted similar to food. By this day, we noticed that every time we took the kids to camp, they had no idea who they were. They were still mispronouncing their names and our kids went to camp kicking and screaming, this night was the last night we took them to camp. My oldest still went to his camp, the 10-12 year old camp where he could sign himself in and out but he had to stay for 2 hours before signing out which is a strange policy, I think it's so that when the other parents drop off their kids they see a full camp. Day 6 was Cozumel, another familiar stop but at a different pier, which we also enjoyed. We did a bunch of shopping and enjoyed the best tasting Starbucks we've ever had. This may have been due to the utter crappiness of the coffee on ship. Breakfast again, gutter food, lunch was the same, dinner was at Ginza Noodle Bar which was actually enjoyable but our kids had to sit at a neighboring table. Every day of this trip we've heard about the Mojito drink special at the Sugarcane Mojito Bar on Deck 13, midship. A great deal, 6 flavored Mojitos for $15. However, the bar is non-existent except for the sign by the pay to eat restaurants Cagney's and Moderno. The bar is nowhere to be found. We watched the comedian that evening which was fine, however we couldn't order a drink because nobody asked us if we wanted a drink. Day 7, the 2nd day at sea started with the same old crap breakfast except someone figured out how to make scrambled eggs. However, my youngest son had a brick for a pancake which cracked and snapped when we bent it. YUM! Another lovely thing I found at breakfast was the fried rice from the noodle bar the night before. YUM AGAIN! By day 7, thankfully, my kids learned how to walk on a slippery surface and we enjoyed the kid slides and pools, the hot tub, etc. After dinner, another at Versailles (with pants), we decided to take the kids to a real treat, A MAGIC SHOW! ...which was performed by the cruise director. WOW! The tricks were old hat stuff and the kids asked to leave about 20 minutes into the show. We returned home which I felt like was a miracle based on how the cruise line operates. We had breakfast again at the Market Cafe and again, it was dismal. We disembarked which was surprisingly smooth which is probably because people are typically fighting to get off the ship by the last day. Read Less

Public washrooms not clean Buffet, absolutely terrible....sad food, long lines (celebrity cruise ship designs far better), powdered eggs at breakfast OR long wait for fresh eggs because attendant had two pans on a small hot plate Bar service....don't get me going....they gave the ultimate Bev package but they get to save on booze by not serving around the pool (or minimally) and making you queue up at the bar (can you believe it!!!!) Ultimate beverage pack includes drinks to $11 but NO water bottles or specialty coffee....coffee in restaurants was terrible Pool level design.....NO lounge chairs in shade, only on upper level in scorching sun.....all area taken up by small tables and chairs If we had not already booked a cruise for this coming April on NCL we wouldn't be going back Read Less

We were kept in port the first night for propeller repair and had to return earlier to complete repairs on our departure date. Missed going through the Skyway Bridge at Sunset/Sunrise, which is spectacular. Due to propeller repair the entire port itinerary was changed along with excursion times. Some cruisers were complaining that they were unable to get the excursion that they had originally booked and those that booked their private excursion had to scramble. The Glass Bottom Boat & Snorkel in Costa Maya was extremely poor. We were told almost immediately that there was Hurricane Dean in August 2007 (170-200mph) that had destroyed most of the reef. The view from the Glass Bottom Boat was poor. The life vest that I was given had the top buckle broke (which was later replace with another one with the buckle missing), and by the time I extracted it from around my neck and re-adjusted my snorkel (personal snorkel) from the life vest --they were 75% done with the snorkeling. In my cabin #10595 you could hear the neighboring cabin occupants talk clearly + one individual had a cough, cough, cough++++ Reported to Guest Services and was told that they would send someone to speak to neighboring residents. This was not a volume problem--it is a cabin problem. I was told later by guest services that I could fill a complaint upon return. Great!! Had a wonderful cabin attendant!!!!! The food was not appropriately cooked for weight conscious people. Example: salmon had a white like sauce on it. Too much grease on the food--complained to captain of restaurant. Loved the open dining and views while dining were superb. The acrobat entertainment was excellent. Read Less

I have been on many cruises & this was by far the worst!!!! Let us start at the beginning.. We arrived at are time to get on ship.. First we waited 20 minutes in the sun. Then they let us inside to wait 2 more hours, before we finally got on ship.. Once onboard at 2;45 we were famished!!! So we go to the buffet, they were closed for evac drill.. After drill ,NO FOOD till 5pm at buffet, they had one other option we tried, but it took 45 minutes to get fries.. The room was not as Brochure described!!! We had family of 4. It was shown 2 bunkbeds.. What we got was 1 bunkbed & a slideout bed, with a much smaller room.. We could not even view TV at night because the 1 bunk was almost against the TV.. The Food was probaly the biggest disaster!!!! THe buffet, I would combere it to a cheap buffet. Breakfast was OK.. Lunch was basicaly the same everyday.. Chicken, Pork, Fish. Maybe a different gravy, or sauce.. Also some type of sandwich. For dinner it was about the same. They tried to spice it up a bit, they did not succeed. Tex-mex night consisted of a taco bar ,some dry buritos & casadious.. first night out SUnday Nov29 TURKEY The dining rooms, I only talk the FREE dining!! They had 2 dining rooms that were included, all others you paid $18-30+gratuity Both dining rooms had exact same menu!!! The food was good, but not great..(i ordered a ceasar salad, it was dropped off & that was it. no ground pepper or grated cheese..) It reminded me more of a diner than a classy eatery..The staff were not friendly at all...I have been on many cruises, this was the worst by far, & every other cruise they have a LOBSTER dinner..Not this cruiseline Read Less

Background.... I cruise at least 3 or 4 times a year for a week or more. This ship is terrible!!! I have cruised Norwegian twice this year before this cruise and cannot believe that not only did they ruin many folks vacations with their maintenance issues on this cruise..but i found out later that they outright lied when they said it had never happened before. it happens EVERY WEEK! the poor souls that boarded on Sunday when i disembarked and spent the first night in Tampa will not find out until this sat. that they are also spending the last night...in Tampa. I am sorry...but,I pay for a balcony so i can sit outside at night and look at the ocean and hear it when i sleep. my main enjoyment on cruises is my balcony and sitting in the sun near the pool and reading. good or bad..that's what i want out of a vacation. both of these things were not optimal on this cruise and I recommend if you did not book yet..do not book this ship even if it is free... in fact after this..i am deciding whether or not to cancel my 2 upcoming 2016 Norwegian cruises as now i feel the whole comp-any is untrustworthy.. they do this to folks every week...and say..it is the first time. so...first night we did not leave till about 3 am... my cabin had the smallest storage space of any ship i have sailed on. there is only one pool on this ship and it is noisy and full of belligerent drunks thanks to them extending the free drink package to inside cabins i guess. there were 2 major violent incidents on this cruise with drunks fighting and hitting each other. blood on deck? check. smoker? good luck...one little section on the pool deck that had seating...any other area outside..no seating.. and that little section was policed to make sure it did not grow even a foot into the open and empty section of deck...so people are crowded like animals into a tiny area when there was certainly room to make it a bit larger. no ashtray? deal. was told that folks keep taking them so they were short on ashtrays even enough for the tiny section.seriously? what do they cost? a couple bucks? best part of the ship was the crew...they were all top notch and wonderful except for the nasty guest services supervisor who told me when i complained to write the office and dismissed me like a was a small child. internet? A complete joke. I took the 200 dollar and change unlimited package as i have to be connected to my business. it does not work in port..so that was 2 nights i paid 30 bucks each for... and...even better..it logs you out every 20 minutes and then it can take an hour to log back on. on the way back...same thing... let us know that the "unexpected maintenance" required an early return to port. problem is..i found out on the last night..it happens every cruise...not unexpected at all...they are trying to avoid dry docking the ship for repairs until after the holidays. so last night was again spent in port. without working net. just so you know as i realize i sound like a negative Nancy..that this is the first bad review i have ever written about a ship and that i was very surprised as I loved Norwegian until last week. so once again...i would not take this ship again...even as a gift. my time is too valuable. Really disappointed in NCL on the Norwegian Star very recently. Just about everything was below the quality we've enjoyed on 5 other cruise lines, and also previously on NCL. I sense they have cut costs, applied the screws to extract revenue wherever possible - and done so while allowing staff performance to erode. That's a shame, because there are still some staff members who try hard. The cabin was smaller than others that we've had at the same price point and ship location. It had just one regular power outlet. Often it was extremely noisy from scraping, rumbling and dragging noises (nearby restaurant?) which persisted between 9.30 pm and 4.30 am when we'd prefer to be sleeping. It did, however, have a reasonable quality bathroom. The dining rooms (food and service) were really poor. Service was slow from inexperienced servers one of whom didn't speak English. On average, one in three dishes was inedible, one was disappointing, and one was just OK. We quickly abandoned the dining rooms for the upper deck buffets, which were fair-to-medium. I'd consider them worse than Carnival and all our other cruise experiences except for the coffee which was good. I also liked the ease-of-self-service at the beverage counters, where you sometimes see a crush of people on other ships. The entertainment had some good dancing, and I liked the comedian, but other shows disappointed. I did like that the views in the main theater were good from all the seats, though the seats themselves sometimes sloped down awkwardly (ship needs a refit?) The ship is showing its age, but is otherwise quite nice. However, they left port 14 hours late because of maintenance, and arrived back 7 hours early for the same reason - which I think might be something that's been going for a while - maybe without telling the passengers in advance(?) Shifting these to nighttime deprived us of some rather fine views of Tampa Bay, as well as resulted in rearrangement of the ship's ports-of-call - a nuisance when you have to reschedule shore visits with friends. NCL is applying a carry-on wine policy in which you pay $15 corkage on every bottle of wine or get it confiscated until you disembark. I really don't mind it if NCL wants to milk every passenger as much as it can, but would prefer to see this done consistently with their written policy so it's known ahead of time, and then I won't carry my wine to the ship and have to carry it home afterwards. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they have ratcheted down the policy beyond what their website states. When I questioned this with ship staff, I was surprised that most could not accurately quote the policy. When I called their 800-number from home, a Supervisor seemed to "get it" and asked to call me back the next day or the day after. I never heard from her again, and my voicemail went unanswered also. After arriving in a shuttle van to the Tampa Port, the horrible trip started from the get go. There was absolutely no employee around to ask where to I place my luggage and where does one check-in. Finally paying a porter to take my suitcase, I followed the crowd upstairs where I waited in line 2 1/2 hours for check-in. Please note I arrived in plenty of time for my check-in time and there was already approximately 200 persons in front of me. This ship should be overhauled or put into the scrap pile. It is old, old and the people working for the ship could care less about serving customers as they have already been paid their tip money. Norwegian requires that everyone pre-pay their tips. The so-called entertainment was a zero scale (who cares about a magician). Upon inquiring what brand name entertainment they were offering, I was told none and that only the actual ship board members perform -- horrible performances. Upon inquiring where the adult pool was, I was taken up to the 12th deck where a crew member pointed at a postage size pool. I said, no you do not understand as I want the adult pool -- he said that is it. What a joke as most other cruise ships have Olympic size pools and not a kiddie pool. It should also be pointed out that we were suppose to leave at 4.p.m. on Sunday and did not leave until 7 am the next morning due to maintenance on the engines. The customers should have been informed that we were going to be delayed and that they were switching the ports around that we were going to visit. In essence it was like checking into a floating hotel for the night and then leaving the next morning. What kind me concerned was that upon the return trip we were advised that they were getting in early so the engine work could be inspected (now one would expect this to have been done before leaving). At two of the ports, we had to use local tenders to get to the islands I cannot remember which island we visited but the tender we were in broke down three times. We were told it would take between 10-15 minutes to arrive at the shoreline. It took us 35 minutes due to the fact they get pouring coolant and oil into this beat up tender -- should not have been used in the first place. This cruise ship seemed only to care about the jewelry sales they were conducting each day. That is all one heard about was to buy, buy, buy. The buffet was simply horrible. Most of the items were indistinguishable. The only thing I ate off the buffet was oatmeal. I utilized the other choices where one was served better food. The best place to eat was Cagney's where the food was excellent. Please note Cagney's is one of the restaurants that you pay to eat at -- guess that is why the food was so good. I tried one time to eat at O'shehan's (forgive the spelling) and I ordered a tea, salad, and fish and chips. What I received was a cold platter of French fries and fish. Since I travelled by myself, I had to pay the single occupancy fee (highway robbery that should be discontinued). The only good part of the ship was the nice man who cleaned the room every day. He was very personable/friendly. The disembarkation was a disaster to the first degree. The call for those walking off was given and it was chaos. There was absolutely no one directing passengers getting off the elevators or coming down the steps that the line ended at the beginning of the ship. Envision a complete circle around the ship and that is how people were lined up. There were near breakout fights when people just cut in line as they were not aware of how the line ended. Please choose another ship as the Norwegian Star needs to be mothballed. Definitely would never go on another Norwegian cruise and will stick with Royal Caribbean who takes care of their passengers. I see by the prior reviews the absence of what this line offers/sells, service. I understand that to some these are pictured as relaxing, exciting or possibly plentiful adventures in almost every way.. But alas, our experience was dysfunctional, uninformative and self service from start to finish. My opinion as that of my Wife's are inconsequential and moot, what I will state is fact. I might go off track and lambaste/rant as some things need color to impact a point, and I would like to apologize for those comments and statements now. Booked state room near elevators then bumped to mid ship. Wife is handicapped and that extra footage we had to travel is absurd. Mechanical problems kept us in port to the point of reassigning excursion arrival and length times. Forced to cancel family n friends in Cozumel as we had been reassigned four days earlier with only the notice after the embarking was completed Sunday evening. Toilet floods day one. Called Guest services,(one of several). Fixed, or so we thought. Day two, flooded bathroom. Called again. Sent out another plumber that replaced a check valve. This held fortunately. Food service/buffet, helpful and friendly like custodial. Hosts were below average/average at best. Wait staff slow in inclusive Restaurants If they were close to capacity. If busy, good luck if you see your appetizer after the water. Guaranteed tips will remove the lackluster and incentive every time. Freestyle should read free for all in my opinion,(Sorry about that, got off track) as service in any of the courtyards/venues was virtually non existent. Good Mornings we uttered by our cleaning staff religiously, my hats off to you gentlemen. The rest of the staff should watch your training video, they are in dire need of your assistance/etiquette. Food average, entertainment, below average, unless you consider folding napkins, rerun movies, ice sculpting demos, along with $39.00 Bingo cards the norm, then yes, it's a blast. No seating anywhere on the Port side Deck 7. Had to go in, again, to C.S. to inquire about seats. I addressed this issue with at least three representatives from Customer Service and received three different answers and 1 chair. You will receive several answers to any and all questions you ask so beware and get your running shoes on. Got the Spa Package, showed up Tues, construction, yellow tape and everything. Tried again on Thurs, guess what? Yes indeed. Nothing more tranquil and serene as the sights and sounds of laborers as one is basking in the warmth of the wasted time and monies. Their hours 8-10. 3rd shift perhaps this could of been done? Do you guys have a construction package hmmmm? Maybe we could of gotten some peace... Excursions? Oh boy, here we go...Literally yes, we did enjoy the Mayan Reality and I strongly urge you try it as our Guide Gerardo will keep you riveted if you're an assertive listener. Amazing knowledge, and he takes great pride in his heritage and the history of the land. Here's the Oh Boy part. The Beach and Snorkel in Honduras is and will be etched into my mind forever. My faith in corporate America, namely Norweigans excursion director/manager/marketing crew is tattered even further after viewing the route to one of your "Excursions". You had us partake in a ride through one of Unicefs commercials being filmed for what reason? You think that's funny to expose your, yes your customers, time and time again to the poverty and filth the residents call home? Literally miles of broken down, abandoned ghettos, strewn all along our route, just so we can have a good memorable vacation upon reaching our destination? What's next Gentlemen? Possibly a chemotherapy ward en route to the smoke shop onboard ship,or better yet, how about pictures of drunk driver fatalities at every Bars entrance? Bad taste? I didn't profit gentlemen from that, you did. Shame on all of you. Here's an idea, and it's cheep too. Blacken the windows and play Diamond adds, problem solved. In conclusion I felt the Captain and sailing crew are doing their job. Good communication and we didn't sink. Cons, Terrible non existent Poolside/Aqua Restaurant service and the most aggravating week of my life. Our first taste of cruise life was a bust. Either we need to be heavily medicated, or lower our expectations and reevaluate what service means these days. Read Less
