Took an NCL Western Caribbean cruise last year and wanted to share experience with family...what a mistake!! The food presentation was good but taste was very low quality. The desserts were the worst! Even the breakfast pancakes were clearly packaged and not fresh. Looooong waits between courses, 2 hrs+ for dinner. We chose dining rooms because it was the best of the worst. We did complain to guest services about wait staff, met with lead dining mgr, but nothing changed. Additionally, we reviewed all of the policies for Splash Academy, and there is NOTHING in them about illness. Our granddaughter got sea sick and the staff in Splash Academy were very professional, but they said we had to pay $200 to visit the doctor to have her cleared for return. We understand the requirement to visit the doctor, but not for that fee, no prior notice, and no ability to use health insurance. The doctor only treated for sea-sickness and did not test for viral issues. (What if she had a virus? No quarantine, just $200 please) Even after talking with head of guest services, no apology or accommodation was made for the $200 fee. Beware, if bringing kids. A few other negative issues were: - daughter's room door twice left unlocked after cleaning - men watching TV in daughter's room after dinner (claimed maintenance) - late night (9 p.m) knock to repair a light while granddaughter sleeping - zero ice in room, unless requested - zero towel animals at turn-down (although pushed and sold in photo shop) - horrible smoke filtration in casino - asked wait staff numerous times for more water or butter refills - overall staff attitude acted as if "bothered" (There are still a few staff taking pride in their jobs; But, very few. I actually wondered if the SUN might be a training platform?) I've been cruising over 20 years, on 7+ cruise lines and witnessed the decline of service over costs. This was, by far, the worst cruise for food, service, hospitality, commercialism of ports and general attitude toward passengers and me and my family. Cruise lines should revert back to customer tips in envelopes, not pre-paid tips. This would ensure staff is aiming to please, earning their tips and they are guaranteed to get the money... I will never give NCL any more of my business and let anyone know the truth of this line. Read Less

The ship was clean the cabins were nice but limited storage for your clothes. The food was sub par and you were served the same thing everyday unless you paid extra in the specialty restaurants. I couldn't wait for each port to get off the ship so we could have a decent meal. The crew on this ship were the most miserable and rude bunch of people I have ever seen on a cruise, They NEVER smiled and definitely weren't happy to be there. It seemed like they hated their jobs! And my husband and I have been on just about every cruise line out there and never experienced anything like that. Room service was a joke, they would keep you on hold for so long you would hang up and go get what you wanted yourself. I waited 24 min before finally hanging up. The ports were nice but the ship changed it's itinerary 3 times before the ship even sailed so if you booked excursions early on you had to rebook each time they changed their itinerary and HOPE the things you wanted to do weren't full! They would have you make reservations to get off the ship and put you in a holding area and you would wait forever then once the holding area was full they would start letting people off the ship and the people that arrived 30 min after you would be let go first "not by reservation"! The shows would have been fun if the ship wasn't so overbooked that you could never find a place to sit and were all standing room only. I would not recommend this cruise line to anyone, They are NOT about customer service and for what you pay you should leave there somewhat satisfied! Read Less

Our family of 12 chose the Norwegian Breakaway for our Christmas Cruise. We had eight adults and four children ranging in ages 11 to 17. We were so excited to go on this Cruise and planned for over 12 months. Boy were we disappointed! In general, the boat seemed severely understaffed. Service at the restaurants and at the bars were incredibly slow. At times we waited over 30 minutes for a drink by the pool. We ordered virgin drinks for the children and on at least three different occasions, the drinks were served WITH alcohol. We had 3 staterooms and every day there was something wrong with at least one of them. Clogged showers that flooded the bathrooms, no AC, no electricity, showers that didn't work, and or clogged toilets became part of our daily routine. Sometimes the issues were fixed quickly and other times it took hours. There was one main pool which is an adult only pool. There was a kiddie pool but it wasn't heated and only allowed for a small number of kids. They have slides but they were always closed or they would only have one open with a massive line. The rock climbing wall and sky walk were rarely open due to weather and when they were, the line was crazy long. None of our four kids got to go on either of these during the seven days that we are on the cruise. Everything costs extra and any activities for the kids closed at 10. They do have a kids area called Entourage but it was always full and there was usually a line of kids waiting to get in. My kids got to go in once. We couldn't do ping pong, basketball, or anything after 10. Thank God I thought to bring a deck of cards otherwise we would have had nothing to do. Maybe there was more things for the little kids but nothing for the tweens. Our first Port was scheduled for Great Stirrup Cay. We were excited because we paid for an excursion to swim with the pigs. However, due to inclement weather (or so they said) we got rerouted to Nassau. So instead of an all-inclusive day at the beach, we had to walk around the streets of Nassau trying to figure out what to do. There was nothing to do. Norwegian was running a special at the time that we booked and so we got to experience three of their upgraded dining rooms. Moderno was a joke. Blue Ocean had excellent service but served undercooked seafood. Eating at Teppanyaki was the highlight of our trip. The servers and the cooks were friendly, outgoing, and actually seemed happy to be there. Everyone else on this ship was miserable and some of them were even downright rude, completely dismissing you while in the middle of a conversation with them. The all-you-can-drink package sounded good in the beginning until the server's realize that they didn't have to work very hard for a tip anymore. My husband and I come from service backgrounds. 20% is a minimum an our book. However the service on this boat was so bad that by the third day we insisted that the auto gratuity be removed. We started tipping people accordingly with cash instead. We met some other really great families that also complained about the service and lack of activities on the boat. Some of them said that they had been on Norwegian Cruise line many times before and this particular Cruise was the worst they have ever experienced. I would give anything to go back and pick a different cruise line. Did our family have fun? Of course! But for the amount of money that we spent on this cruise and the excursions, it would have been nice to leave the ship with better memories. I will never go on another NCL ship again. Norwegian could call and offer me a free Cruise and a million dollars and I still wouldn't go. Read Less

While I understand why we missed Cozumel (and agree with the decision the weather was dangerous) absolutely NOTHING was done to make up for this fact. The "additional activities" were the same from the day before leaving us bored and feeling like the rest of the vacation was a waste of money. The onboard activities are too expensive, not interesting, or are those horrible seminars that prey on peoples insecurities - shame on them for having seminars about cellulite etc. The pool was too packed or never had enough water in it. The fitness center is too small to do anything but a cardio machine. The spa staff tries to sell you on products during the massages, which is not relaxing. Browsing the duty free jewelry I constantly had sales reps trying to talk to me - making me leave without a purchase because I was unable to look at the products I was interested in. The organization of getting off the ship at Costa Maya needs work. Those with excursions that leave almost immediately after docking should meet on the ship then be given priority disembarkment. We were in line early and still only caught our excursion as they were leaving. Had this happened, the vacation would have been ruined as we were not on the ship for the days at sea (the excursion itself was wonderful). The 15 dollar a day a person charge should just be included in the ticket price if it is a set fee. Overall, I do not have confidence that I am getting my money's worth with Norwegian and will likely not be booking with them again. I felt like most of the cruise someone was trying to sell me on something - this is not a vacation to me. However, the rooms were not bad, food was decent, and I must stay the staff were exceptional and the only redeeming quality. Read Less

A Day in the Life of a experience Cruiser on NCL Sun This was a girls cruise and we booked b2b just to be on the sea. The price was incredible almost unheard of. (10 days for $400).. This was a book on Wednesday on the ship Thursday. My friend was flying in from Canada and her plane was 2 hours late. I had booked a transport from the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral. There last shuttle was at 1pm. We were the only 2 for this shuttle and there was no driver. We sat around and asked the customer service rep what was going on. She told us they would be here in 5 minutes. Come to find out the driver was sent home and she was trying to get a hotel to shuttle us. The lady said she had to go get a cig break. 15 minutes later she is back, and nobody has appeared to take us to the port. At this point I am not very happy, so I followed her around until we had a solid plan. They put me in an Uber. We left the airport at 2pm Since we were late boarding was done with no issues. We went right to our room and dropped off our carry ones. The room was on the 10th floor, inside family. Nice room for being inside. Our room steward, Julius, was awesome. When we asked for something, like ice, we got it every time he did service. We loved him. The ship is small and while it was renovated, it was just cosmetics. The ship is not easy to navigate, for one main dining venue, you had to go up one flight of stairs across the ship then down another flight of stairs. There were little areas that we found by accident. A speciality restaurant is being used for a buffet. Great place to eat and never crowded. The sailing had rough waters everyday. That didn’t bother us, we have sea legs. Allot of people were sick, including the staff. Good thing about folks being sick, is they stayed in their room. We were able to find some quiet spots on the ship. Forget being around the pool. Folk were packed and the music was loud. During some of our days at sea, the pools were closed due to rough seas. Referencing staff customer service was non-existed. We asked several times where is this or that, and the answer was always “I don’t know”. We went to guest services to ask about our second leg and can we upgrade to a balcony or at least leave us in the same room. Everyone said they can’t do that until the “sea day”. We heard this twice and even when we were back at the PC port they still couldn’t answer the question. Stardust entertainment. The first night was fun. We enjoyed the show. There was a female comedian who was horrible. I don’t remember her name. (pink hair) She had two shows, one was children friendly. We got to the show and watched part of it and left. Back for the adult show and it was a repeat from the previous one. Then there was a show with the crew. We enjoyed the show. We didn’t bother to go for the second comedian as we saw him in the first night ‘taster’ show and realize he wasn’t our cup of tea. We also didn’t go to the juggler or hypnotist. Our second hero of the trip was the piano man, Derrick. I wish I wrote down his last name. We spent allot of our evening at the piano enjoying Derrick. He was engaging, friendly, and took allot of request. The last night, Derrick stayed late and mingled with the crowd, and did some new music. He has his own music and we were lucky enough to hear some. I hope to see him on my other ships. Jason who is the another singer, is horrible. We ate at the main dining rooms, buffet, and room service. The food was nice and plenty of variety. The ship should make note that there is only 1 waffle maker in a station. There should be more than 1. I watched 4 omelets being made and my waffle wasn’t done. We were on the cruise that got sent away at Cozumel. Since we had b2b we decided not get off at Cozumel on the first cruise. So we didn’t get to see Cozumel. Disappointing however it is safety first. This pier was also the one where the two Carnival ships collided. We were suppose to tender and couldn’t due to water conditions and ultimately were told to pull up anchor and leave port. It would have been nice to see our port fees refunded. We had an extra day at sea. I didn’t mind that, however the ship was not prepared for an extra day at sea. They tried to have extra ‘events’, unfortunately it didn’t come across as successful. Some of these special events you had to pay some type of fee. The other events had staff that didn’t care to be hosting the event. Our first room was 0303. Clean and everything was in working order, clean, and wonderful room stewart. Second cruise we were in 9603. Horrible room. Horrible stewart. Bathroom had cracked counters that were filled in with epoxy. I think a kid did the repairs. The bathroom mirror had started to decay and had damage to 3 sides. Basically the mirror was useless for the bottom portion. The shower had the shelve missing the bar, so nothing could be placed in the shower. I have two more cruises with NCL and have them since I had to use some cruisenext certificates. After that I will be trying some new cruise lines. I’ve seen allot of changes that are effecting the quality of the cruise experience. Read Less

I always wanted to try NCL. The minute we got on the ship it reeked of disgusting smoke. Come to find out this cruise company, could care less about non smokers. The president of this line and the designers must be smokers, because you can't escape it. Its in the hallways, the rooms in the restaurants, on the balconies, the theater, absolutely disgusting and gross. My wife has lung cancer and I felt so bad for her on our honeymoon. Had marijuana smokers on the balcony beside us, complained and they did nothing. The deck officer on deck 12, tells me to contact her immediately on her direct line if it happened again, lo and behold when I called her 4 times she never answered. 4 hours after the fact she finally answers and says I will be right down. What a complete joke and a liar. The casino is in the middle of the ship with zero walls, its open to the complete ship. Apparently the smoke is supposed to read the signs and not move from the casino. Its open to 3 floors with 8 restaurants are right in the area with zero walls. Are they complete idiots, with their designs. Even in the casino, the "non smoking" area is separated by one foot of air. I guess the smoke can't read the no smoking signs. Just to show how little they care about the 80% of people that don't smoke, they have all the garbage machines nobody wants to play in the "non smoking" area. If you want to play good machines, you have to get polluted by the 20% that smoke. No days in the casino with no smoking. We went to eat at one of the restaurants on the first day and you may as well forget smoke free, it felt like we had a smoker right beside. On the same night we asked to take our dessert to our room, because my wife couldn't breathe in the restaurant! A stern NO from the server. It was everywhere, the grossest most disgusting smoke lovers ship ever. If you want to kill your kids early or yourself, go on this ship, but if you do, you must not care about your health or your kids. Their "smoking" room on the 15th deck is a complete joke, even smokers were commenting how stupid it was built. Basically it's an area wide open to the rest of the ship, but hey the smoke should know better, it can't wander from that joke of a smoking area, no door, basically two slats of glass open at the top, middle and bottom. What do you think the smoke will do, when the ship is moving? It's again everywhere, you could feel and smell it on the other side of the ship. As for service, this is the rudest most uninformed group of people I have ever encountered. First day we're in the jewelry store, Vadim almost knocks my wife to the ground, so he can rush to make his sale. I called him out on it, "hey that was rude, you should never step in front of your guests" I got the old stupid rye smile, he didn't give a crap as long as he got his sale. We didn't get our complimentary soap and hand cream until day 5. Our room didn't get done one day, we had to ask the room attendant to do it, her answer, "I thought I already did it." Got room service on the first morning it showed up without what we ordered, called down, "that will take 45 minutes to fix our mistake" I wouldn't order it for 8 if I wanted it at 9. That day our dirty dishes were left in our room until I put them in the hallway at 4pm, her answer was "I tought you weren't finished" cripes our dirty linen was on top of the food!! Day two we put our card out about 8 hours before the deadline to get room service the next morning, they never picked it up so we got none. I asked 5 different members a question about the ship, I got a blank stare from 4 of them. One that I asked, was where's the bake shop, again "uh, the bake shop?" Was her response, come to find it, about 120ft from where she works. Totally clueless workers, they seem to not comprehend, what you're asking. Even the cruise director, was asked a question at a question period, he didn't answer what he was asked, he blabbed on about something else. On Stirup Cays, I asked to buy lime juice for my wife as she can't have alcohol because of her cancer, even told the bartender, he showed me the bottle of lime juice and said no, you can have our other juice, I had to give 20% for that service!!! In the 7 days, I got one morning of warm breakfast, all others, cold eggs, cold hashbrowns, cold sausages, luke warm coffee and tea. Had to ask 4 times if bread was coming, BREAD! Like they had to bake it or something. This is the minute the dinning room opens on some occasions. I finally said something to Jeanette Asst Maitre D, she promised if I came to her restaurant the next morning, she would take care of us and make it was warm, do you think, that my breakfast was warm? Ya right corn beef hash felt it came from a fridge, eggs were cold. She offered a Margaritaville lunch on the house for my troubles, just go up and "I already contacted them and got you the free meal". We arrive and the guy said, after swiping my card, "you know there's a $18 surcharge", as with everything else there's a gouging surcharge, even when you gamble, they surcharge your card when you apply a charge to your card. So anyways, Jeanette obviously didn't bother to call up!! So we order an appetizer and entré, appys show up and 5 seconds later he plots the entre right beside, so it can get cold. We go to dinner and show, entré shows up, then 10 seconds later the desert arrives and is placed on our already overcrowded table, where they sat 10 people at 4 single tables, one of the couples was eating on a crack, where the tables joined and guess what? There were at least 25 other empty tables. Basically this cruise line doesn't give a crap if you're a non smoker and doesn't care to give proper service. Once on this ship the whole week, did I see a worker step out of the way for a guest/client to walk by. I saw a worker almost run over an older guest with his cart and never said excuse me or pardon me, or I'm sorry. They give you a Freestyle sheet with all the activities, which are supposed to be the same as their ITV, the information didn't even match. Tried to reserve a show on the tv and this is what it said, "reservation required, first come first serve, reservation will be released 10 minutes before show, so I click on it as is it reservation or not? Well when you click on it a box pops up and says reservation not required. How do you plan anything? One night we never got a freestyle, Why? Room attendant's response, duh "I don't know"". Had desert one night, it said comes with chocolate sauce and strawberries, do you know what strawberries is? A dot of strawberry sauce. Another night our dinner said, comes with fingerling potatoes, what's fingerling potatoes on Norwegian? Frozen french fries!!! At brwakfast I take a ham and cheese omelet, i still can't find the ham and the cheese was exactly one small strand about 1 CM long and cold eggs. I have several and I mean several others to write, but my finger is getting ready to fall off. The GM needs to teach his workers. But, when I approached him about, his ship, I said this will probably be my first and last time on NCL, his response, "oh ok" if he doesn't give a crap, why should his workers, fire that guy!!! Too too many more to list. Unfortunately a couple of good workers were outnumbered by thousands that provide brutal service. Cripes even this site wasn't working on the ship and it was supposed to be free, their free upload a picture to facebook, never ever worked, I tried a dozen times. Funny how all the items that are free don't work, but all the ones you paid for worked!!!! Can't add photos it doesn't work Read Less

We have always loved Norwegian Cruise Lines and its super friendly/entertaining atmosphere and staff before this last cruise we just took in December on the Norwegian Sun. However, after this cruise my family and I just took we were all highly disappointed with our cruising experience. While there were some positive aspects of our vacation, such as the photography services and the friendly staff that helped us choose and buy our family photos taken onboard, the disappointing aspects of our experience outweighed the positive aspects. Firstly, our dining experience onboard was subpar at best. When we would go to the Garden Cafe for a meal, there were not many options and variety available to choose from and eat. Especially with our family being vegetarian, finding options and options that were tasty were pretty difficult; this is true in the complimentary restaurants as well. Our family even went to the specialty Mexican restaurant Los Lobos; however our family could only choose and eat 1 entree because it was the only vegetarian option (even the rice and beans had meat in them!). Secondly, the staff was noticeably less visible and friendly on this cruise compared to our last two cruises, for example our cruise director Jamie only introduced the first show and only hosted one event (the Newlywed Game Show) and we did not see or hear of her at all for the rest of the cruise. Our housekeeping staff was also not too friendly, even rudely telling my sister and I that we have to leave the room within 10 minutes so they can clean it (the housekeepers waited outside the cabin door knocking for us to leave). Another experience with rude staff was in the Garden Cafe, I was apparently blocking the plate stack while I was serving myself some food and the worker was tapping his foot behind me and gave me an attitude to move over so he could put more plates on the stack, even though it had only been a couple seconds that I was standing there. Lastly, the entertainment felt lazy and unimaginative. All the game shows and events were exactly the same from our past NCL cruises and nothing felt innovative or exciting. Also, the biggest disappointment with the entertainment was that most of the “fun” events were for additional fees, which seems very greedy and vicious from NCL seeing as though everyone has already spend a hefty amount of money to already be on the cruise. It was the constant additional fees and the constant selling/advertising that made me lose most of my respect for NCL and its ethics, they don't seem genuine anymore and it seems that all the company wants to do is suck their consumers out of as much money as they can. Overall, my family and I had a pretty subpar/bad experience this time around on NCL even though we have been loyal to them in the past and are Latitudes Rewards members. I am unsure of if we will choose NCL again for our future cruises after this last experience. Read Less

We decided to go on our first cruise with Norwegian, joining a group of friends. Since we both have been on other cruises we thought this would be great fun. Very disappointing. Starting from the moment we went online to book. We used NCL.com made our reservations. Once done we still had questions, and also wanted to purchase other packages. We called the reservation number listed. They could not help us because it shows that we booked our cruise through South Africa. It is not possible to even get on to those sites from the USA. We tried on three different computers. Three days later, countless hours and people, we finally got to one in corporate who was most helpful and frustrated that no one was able to fix the issue. Took him minutes to make our reservation a domestic one. The initial deposit for the cruise was processed at the Bank of England. We informed the cruise line of our travel times. We purchased the hotel and transportation through NCL. Arriving at Orlando airport, met up with the NCL reps. They had not record of us for the transport to the hotel. Fortunately the hotel has a shuttle service. Embarking on to the ship was okay. A little disappointing to enter the ship into a hallway. Past cruises you've entered into a main area that is quite impressive. Add to the fact the bathroom in the entrance area was out of order. The rooms were ready quite quickly. However, the hair dryer was broken. Actually broken, as in the handle not attached anymore. The faucet in the bathroom would come on scalding hot and take forever to get cool water. The paper products in the bathroom, the absolute cheapest you could get. The toilet tissue is one sided its so thin. From that day forward this just went downhill. The staff is very hit and miss. You will find a few that seem to enjoy their job and are quite helpful. You will meet many more who do not like their job, and it shows. The ship is lacking details maintenance. Rusting showing on our balcony, and all around the ship. Stained furniture, worn carpets, broken lounge chairs, very sloppy painting, dripping and over painting throughout. Be prepared to wait for everything. Getting a watered down drink can take as long as half an hour. For the most part there are only two bartenders trying to serve hundreds. No constancy in the drinks. Order the same drink from different bars and they will all taste different. Dinning, reservation all taken. You are expected to reserved way before you've even gotten onto the ship. They are very concerned about the guest health. But I witnessed so many things that put the guest's health in jeopardy. One case in point, the bars serve up bar mix (nuts and crackers mix) in glasses. I watched a guest pour them into their mouth, lips touching the glass, put it back empty. The bartender refilled the same glass with mix and give it to another guest. From then on I watch as they just reused and reserved the bar glasses with the bar mix over and over. It was gross. The food is pretty unexciting. The buffet, ugh! Biscuits are hokey pucks, chewy waffles and pancakes, I'd swear powered eggs. Much of it way over cooked, to the point of burnt. Try going to the individual restaurants. A step up. But still just okay. Hour cabin stewart was excellent. Very helpful and attentive. Customer Service desk, not so much. We took our issues to them, and all we got was I'll note your account. The excursions were great. However, there will be lots and lots of people. From NCL's descriptions they make is sound like an intimate time at a secluded beach. You and five thousand of your closest acquaintances. There were other cruise ships docked so you have all of them to deal with too. I could go on and on. Needless to say, this was not a pleasant experience at all. Save your money and the frustration, take a different cruise line. Then executives of NCL need to get their butts out of their offices and go undercover and cruise their ships like a regular guest. Then maybe there would be some improvements. Read Less

We did not choose the cruise as friends of ours picked it, but we did not think it could be as terrible as it was. Literally from the second we booked we had problems. I booked online and when I tried calling them to make changes they told me they couldn’t help because we booked through the South African website...meanwhile we are in PA. We were recommended to call the international line (which we can’t since we are in the US!!) After going on for 10 minutes on how she couldn’t help us with anything cause she “wasn’t allowed to touch it” due to it somehow being an international booking, she says “can I help you with anything else?” To which I responded, “you literally told us you can’t help with anything so why would you say that?!?” And hung up. We got another girl on the phone and she said she couldn’t do anything and that we would be paying for the cruise through the bank of London for it being an international booking...which AGAIN we did not do, and we’d have to pay an exchange fee for the money. It took hours and hours and multiple different calls to finally get our reservation changed. After all that we booked our transportation through NCL (BIG MISTAKE). Not one person had us on their list for pickup from the airport, and all they even did was call the hotel which we could have done. AND on top of that the hotel took 30 minutes to pick us up. After debarking we were supposed to go back to the same hotel for one night but the transportation people had us going to the airport and said they are only going to the airport...HOW ARE WE PAYING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING?!?!?. After a solid 45 minutes they told us to get on one bus, we sat for 10 minutes and they told us to get off as it’s a different bus going to the hotel, only come to find out that that bus we get on has to go to the airport first.... Everything about the ship was horrible save for a handful of crew members. Even getting on the ship was so lackluster...you get on on just a random deck in a hallway with no idea how to get anywhere and no crew member explaining anything. At least with other Disney and Royal Caribbean cruises you enter into a grand atrium or something, this we just had to take a walk around the outside deck only to enter into a thousand people waiting for elevators. A solid 80% of the crew members had no idea what they were doing nor did they know anything about the ship or its services. First day we ask guest services how our drink package works. She says we can get anything we want and there is no limit....of course we didn’t trust this and had to find someone else who explained how it actually worked. Their dining reservations team were also completely useless...they had no idea what they were doing and had ZERO customer service skills. Just getting their attention for them to look up from their computers was hard enough and when a guy finally did, he just told us that the reservation we wanted was unavailable and he went back to whatever he was doing, instead of trying to find something else for us. It was much easier using the touchscreens for reservation, so you wouldn’t have to deal with actual people. Most of the host/hostesses of the restaurants would barely look up from what they were doing when people approached, you just had to guess if you were supposed to go up to them or not. They would flat out ignore anyone who stepped up to their podiums until they felt like helping someone. Half of the wait staff was like this too, they would only go to your table maybe once to take your order, and then you would never see them again, only the staff who would bring the food to the tables. Again, there were some staff members who were terrific and really stood out, it was very HIT OR MISS with all of the staff onboard. Now for the ship and how poorly it is taken care of. It is also terribly organized. Everything is extremely cramped and you truly do feel the other thousands of people onboard. All restaurants and activities are crammed either on 6,7, or 8 or 15. Walking on 6,7, or 8 you almost always had to navigate a maze of people and there were lines galore. That’s probably because of the bars being staffed with only 2 bar tenders each who would only help the guests who were the loudest and most obnoxious. And with the drinks, almost every bar made them differently, no consistency with drinks. I had bar tenders look at me multiple times as I tried to order a drink, and they would flat out ignore me and help the loud drunk woman who just walked up to the bar. Here’s another instance of terrible customer service. While getting back on the ship after one of the ports, they had two lines open for the metal detectors. Everyone was splitting up going to whichever line was lower in numbers. Only all of the sudden a woman in security just stopped one line and rudely forced guests to wait in the longer line, only to open up her side for random guests. There was no rhyme or reason to what she was doing. Lastly, we did one shore excursion and it was NOT AT ALL what it was described as. It said it was supposed to be a relaxing beach break on Tortola, only to find out they drop you off with the other thousands of tourists on a tiny beach where there was nowhere to sit unless you walked 100yards down to the other side of the beach. Overall would definitely not ever go on another NCL cruise, NOT worth the money!!! Read Less

My best friend and I have been friends for 25 years and to celebrate her and I decided to take this cruise. This became an extremely stressful vacation and we weren’t able to enjoy our time. I have cruised before but it was her first time. The ship was not beautiful, the night club DJ played bad wedding music such as the hussle and the food was disappointing. The staff caused us enormous amounts of hassle which we ended up spending the majority of our time at guest services taking care of mistakes made by the staff. Here is a list of our experiences: Housekeeping left out my friends insulin from the refrigerator and she is diabetic which became a medical emergency and the medical center gave us a difficult time by trying to charge us for their services and the medicine. The housekeeper also took the ice pack we needed in order to travel off the ship on port days and he left an open beef jerky package in our refrigerator from the prior guests. During our trip their was a malfunction of our toilet in our cabin. The glow night DJ had only played the same song over and over. The ship was extremely rocky the first two days at sea. The rumor on the ship was that they neglected to utilize the stabilizers. We were surprised to find out that our soda package that we both purchased did not include virgin daiquiris and bottled water so we asked to be refunded because we both don’t drink soda and the staff changed both our key cards but only did a refund for one of us until we went back to guest services to explain their mistake. We also purchased the water bottle package after that and ordered 12 bottles and only received 6 bottles so we went back to guest services to have them reimburse us for the difference in that price as well. We were disappointed in our cruise that we had long awaited to experience together. We came away feeling we did not get the value and great experience we had hoped for. Obviously we are very disappointed in every aspect of our cruise vacation and how things were handled by the staff causing us enormous amounts of energy resolving issues instead of having fun. We hope that Norwegian takes our bad experiences seriously and compensates us for the lost opportunity to enjoy our cruising vacation. Read Less

The ship is very large, but appeared to have the same amount of crew as their smaller ships resulting in very poor service. The venues are small and most are difficult to get into. If you get the specialty restaurant good luck on getting a dining time before 9 pm unless you book early. Overall the food was disappointing in both O Sheehan’s and the buffet, with only 1/3 of the buffet lines open at any time resulting in to many people and poor food selection. We waited quite awhile for our food in O Sheehans and thought we lost our server a few times as they didn’t check back on us to see if our food was delivered or needed drink refills The bar service was extremely poor, again not all bars open and those that were were understaffed. Room service was good and came at the scheduled time and our room steward was outstanding. Entertainment required reservations as well and was not up to the standards we have grown to expect from this cruise line. Other than the beautiful weather and great ports the trip was a disappointment. Read Less

The food was so bad in every outlet. In normal dining the food compares with Golden Coral. We decided to pay to go to the steak outlet and the rib eye was so tough you couldn't chew it. When the server asked how it was after I left more than 2/3 of the steak, I told her bad and unable to eat. She said that was nice. Still charged us over $100.00. AC didn't work very well in our room. Called and complained 5 times over a 3 hour time frame and some guy came by and felt the air and said it was fine. We spent most of our cruise in the hall or other cooler locations. Was hard to sleep in the hot room at night. The sewage smell was so bad in the bathroom it made my wife sick. We went to the bathroom in the public areas and held our nose while taking a short shower. Called guest services but no one did anything about it. The food issue is the employee's fault, the company is buying cheap quality food to save money. This is my 6th cruise but first with Norwegian and will be my last. If I could have found a flight back, l would have gotten off a the first port. Carnival has MUCH better food at a cheaper cruise price. I would have been willing to pay for the upgraded food package if the food had been any better. I've been in the hospitality industry for more than 40 years running both hotels and restaurants and would never serve that poor of quality food nor do nothing to help my guests. No one I spoke with knew what to do other than, I'll tell my manager. No one called or do anything to make it better. Read Less

The cruise fit the Thanksgiving holiday time period and left out of Port Canaveral which was convenient. Plus, I had no reason to expect such a poor experience. Below is a more complete explanation of why this cruise was such a disappointment, but the problems were mainly in two areas, cabin service, and food. Our cabin attendant routinely moved and removed items from our room, so that every time we returned to our cabins, we had to search for personal items that had been put away, phones, iPad, books, kindles, even articles of clothing. Plus, on four occasions, food which had been brought to the room specifically for snacks ( we had a small child with us) were removed. Secondly, as also mentioned below, the quality of the food left a lot to be desired. There is no doubt there was plenty of food, but it was mainly meat or carb based, and not a lot of higher nutritional value vegetables. A lot of fruit was tinned, and one day the cheese was definitely so processed that it seemed as if it might have come in a box. Plus, having requested vegetarian options, and being assured that was no problem, we found out that it was indeed a problem. And the Norwegian Sun made it a problem by offering almost nothing that was specifically vegetarian, and stating that vegetarian meals should be requested 24 hours in advance by working with the food services at individual restaurant. That’s hardly a vacation. I do meal planning at home. One night in the dining room there were two options available, which was a nice surprise, and a veggie burger was cooked especially, although there was a long wait. If Norwegian Sun doesn’t want to cater to vegetarians, it would be appreciated if they just said so. The children’s menu lacked variety and nutritional value. Read Less

This was my first cruise. My wife booked this to celebrate our 35th anniversary. I was expecting an upscale experience from Norwegian compared to the lower cost lines. Our first experience was a thirty minute wait to get a drink. I assumed that this was early crowds just arriving but the wait times didn't really get much better. We spent some time in the pool area but left because the sound system was turned up too loud. I suspect the live entertainment was good but we couldn't enjoy it with the volume turned up that loud. The cafeteria was never very busy. There were plenty of seats. The food was OK, not great. The sit down restaurants were better although the meat portions were small and over cooked. The Italian Restaurant was pricey but excellent. The private island was nice. The barbecue was OK, not great. The music was turned up really loud there as well. We found some seats at the opposite end of the beach from the DJ. Snorkel rental wasn't worth it. The equipment was of poor quality and there wasn't much to see. The last night, the ride was really rough so we didn't get much sleep. On our way out, I left behind a toiletries kit with an expensive shaver in the state room. You can't go back to get it once you depart the ship so we relied on the lost and found system. I'm sure it was found by our steward but not turned in so it's gone. It was my fault that I left this behind but it should have been turned in none the less. Read Less

We had been cruising with Carnival and wanted to try a different line thinking higher price = better experience. The ship was smaller than I expected and that is on me, I should have read the reviews before booking. The complimentary food was not as good as Carnival but the specialty dining was pretty good, just pricey. The free drinks were amazing of course, but you better get them before midnight because everything closes down at midnight except the sports bar and they aren’t too happy to see you when you come in. We chose swimming with the pigs as our excursion and it was pretty cool, but the whole time we were on Great Stirrup Cay we were covering Royal Caribbean’s private island. It looked like it had a lot more to do on the island. If I were to ever choose Norwegian again, it will be on a much larger/newer boat. Really glad this was not my first cruise or I probably wouldn’t cruise again. Read Less

The food was horrible, service was not great, front desk was no help at all. The boat was rocking more than any boat I ever been on the first and last night. When I went to the front desk in the middle of the night to get water because my girlfriend was throwing up from all the rocking they sent me to the back of the ship. Not to mention water isn't included on your all you can drink package, it cost about $7 a bottle. The ship went to their private island and then decided to cancel it last moment and we skipped on stop. I don't know if tips were paid before attending the cruise is the reason all the staffs were slow and not friendly at all, I would much rather they earn their tips. on the 4th day when we went to their private island my drink package did not work and when I asked why they said its not activated go back to the ship to see why its not working there is nothing we can do. Because you have to take a boat back to the ship and it would've took probably over an hour to do that we decided not to drink. When we went to the front desk after we boarded back on they said "there is nothing wrong with your card I don't know why it didn't work." They really didn't seem to care, didn't apologize, I wasn't compensated or anything. Overall probably one of the worst cruises I have been to. Read Less

I just got back from my first NCL cruise today and I definitely didn't want to wait to write this. Let me start with the pros: The ship is very clean, and it is nice. The wait and cleaning staff are nice and knowledgeable. Okay now the cons: 1. Our itinerary got changed because of the hurricane damaging one of the ports we were visiting. I know this is not NCL's fault, but the way they handled it was. Previously this happened to me on a Royal Caribbean cruise and they found another place for us to go. I understand NCL didn't have that option, so we just got a day at sea. I called them to ask about the port fees for that specific place being reimbursed, and they said they would not be. I asked for compensation some how because it didn't make sense that we were having to pay port fees for somewhere we were not going. It took me 2.5 hours on the phone multiple times to get them to give us anything. I will say they eventually upgraded us to a balcony room when we were initially in an inside cabin, but that was only because the balcony rates had dropped to what we had already paid anyway...so really they didn't give us anything. 2. We were sailing with others, and whoever upgraded their room on the phone, ended up removing their unlimited drink package without telling them. We didn't find this out until we were on the boat. This took another hour and a half on the boat to resolve!! We literally had printed out proof that we had paid for it, and they still wouldn't listen. The in person staff said they could only speak to corporate to resolve it. I told them I would wait while they called them, and they said they could only do it through email and asked me to step aside so they could help someone else. I asked how long it would take through email and they said they could not give me an estimated time. The guy I was talking to said I could call corporate, so I did, right there in front of him. When I finally got corporate to realize what THEY did, he said he couldnt talk to to them over the phone. I asked why he told me to call then and he just shrugged. This was a terrible start to the cruise. 3. When they finally heard through email from corporate, we went back to get our cards reprinted with the drink package on it, and there was a couple in front of us dealing with the same situation and they were on their second hour of standing there! 4. Royal Caribbean's food is way better 5. It literally took 10 minutes to get a drink, even if there was two people at the bar, and the drinks were pretty weak (and I'm not normally a drinker) 6. They didn't stick to itinerary times..like if entertainment started at 1, they would start it at 1:10 or whenever they decided to 7. The entertainment on royal is way better There's so much more I can't even remember but I had another NCL cruise booked and I came home and cancelled it immediately. Read Less

Overall the cruise was a huge failure. DON'T STAY IN AFT FACING ROOMS. THE SHIPS ENGINE FUMES RAIN DOWN ON THE BALCONY. CANCER CAUSING FUMES AND SOOT FEEL IN MY COFFEE AND I DRANK IT. The staff is clearly aware of the problem and said they usually clean it at the end of the trip. They were great and said this time they would clean it daily but said that's not normally what they are told to do. Norwegian makes them leave it there if no one complains. I'm disgusted Norwegian can get away with this. It's a safety hazard for crew, staff and guests. I HAVE A SAMPLE OF IT AND WILL BE SENDING IT OUT FOR TESTING. I'll be contacting the company with complaints shortly. In the 20 years this ship has been out I can't believe they didn't fix this. Disgusting. I paid more for this room too. They never inform you of this anywhere on their website. Clearly hiding it. The staff was amazing and did their best but clearly Norwegian is only interested in it's profits over how its costumers enjoy the trip. Cancelled island trips only led to more activities you can pay for on the boat. Not one thing was offered to guests to increase the enjoyment of their stay. Everything feels like up selling to the point where it's shoved down your throat. I get they want our money but it made the trip hard to ever relax or enjoy an event without someone looking thirsty at your wallet or really state room card. The public bathrooms were always clogged. Gross cause people still use them. Read Less

We chose this cruise to take my 85 yr. old father-in-law to Key West, someplace he has always wanted to visit. Key West was great. Our time on board the ship not so much. The main dining room dinner food was underwhelming. The dinner service likewise. Ate in the steakhouse and it was decent. Still something to be desired from the waiter. The French restaurant was the best meal and dinner service on this ship. We also lost use of our room for a few hours while some crew members power washed our balcony and the one next to us. This was to remove the ash that was deposited from the onboard incinerator. But these are minor annoyances. Our real disappointment was with our cabin, an aft-facing mini-suite. We picked this cabin for the bathtub/shower combo. We did not want the standard phone booth size shower. From first use the shower and sink did not drain properly, filling with water and taking quite a long time to empty. I immediately let Guest Services know hoping for the problem to be remedied. Thought it would be addressed while we were off the ship in Key West. It wasn't. The first attempt at clearing the drain was made that evening. Did not improve. This went on the entire cruise. Eventually the bathroom floor drain began overflowing into the bathroom/dressing area/closet. When this happened the carpet in our closet/dressing area and would be saturated with this waste water. The bathroom tile floor would likewise be wet with a black deposit left behind when the water went back down the drain. This happened several times a day. Each time we would notify Guest Services bringing another visit from the maintenance crew and cleaning crew. The last time this happened while we were still using the cabin, the water not only soaked our carpet but also the carpet outside our cabin in the passageway. The first day the floor drain overflowed, we were giving use of an interior stateroom to shower. We had an aft-facing stateroom. The interior room was located on the same level but all the way at the front of the ship. Nothing like carrying an overnight bag the length of the ship to shower when you paid for a mini-suite. The next day we were provided access to a balcony room two levels above ours. We showered here and slept here the last day/night of the cruise. By this time our mini-suite was no longer habitable with the smell from the waste water and fans running trying to dry the carpet for the next cruise. At least we got to see Key West. Read Less

We looked forward to our family vacation on a four-day cruise for my wife, myself and our two teenage daughters. Unfortunately, our first experience on Norwegian Cruise Lines was a disaster and will be our last with this cruise line. My advice to readers is look elsewhere for a cruise, because Norwegian Cruise Lines has fundamental and systemic problems, and the employees just don’t care. Our “Mini-Suite” was a joke and not large enough for two adults and two teenagers. Compared to other cruise lines it was a normal cabin in terms of size. When I asked guest services to come and show us how four people were intended to sleep in this room, I was told, “Go figure it out yourself with housekeeping, the room is rated for four people.” FAIL The sports bar had no sports for the cruise because the satellite TV was not working on the entire ship. One of the bartenders in the sports bar kept double charging for each drink, because I had a drink package. When I informed guest services, they didn’t seem to care, once again. I also tried to make a reservation for a specialty restaurant by calling the reservation line. I was told everything was booked. I decided to go to the restaurant and ask the hostess, and she told me “we have lots of room, what time would you like to reserve for dinner?” All FAIL Finally, the food at the buffet was either overcooked and uneatable or undercooked and raw. I selected a beef kabob one night and it was seared on the outside and completely raw inside. I also selected a piece of chicken that was a quarter inch thick and I could not cut it with a knife because it was so overcooked like shoe leather. One night at the Seven Seas restaurant I ordered a NY Strip. What I was served was a fat and gristle sirloin that was a quarter inch thick. My wife ordered an Asian Salad and it was served still half frozen. FAIL There are some many choices for cruise lines, and most of them do the basics well. Unfortunately, the Norwegian Cruise Lines can’t even get the basics right. The best advise we can offer is book your cruise with a cruise line that values getting the basics right. Unfortunately, NCL does not. Read Less

I’ve sailed with different Norwegian cruises 5 times before this one, but going on Norwegian Sun was a huge disappointment. It started before the cruise even began when I got a cabin in the back of the ship but specifically payed extra for a mid-ship guaranteed. When I asked to change my cabin for the one I paid for they told me that the ship is fully booked and they couldn’t do that because all mid- ship cabins were taken. The food was bad compared to other ship’s, basically same thing every day in buffet and restaurants. Not much to choose from. The staff wasn’t friendly and seemed like they didn’t want to be on that ship either. One of the islands was canceled due to hurricane damage. The other one wasn’t canceled but still had huge waves and extremely dirty beach from hurricane. And third island, (Norwegian private island) got canceled on the morning we got there due to weather. So we ended up spending lots of time on the ship that I couldn’t wait to get off of. If you’re looking for a fun vacation don’t go during hurricane season and don’t go on Norwegian Sun. Ps and don’t trust a mid-ship guaranteed cabin unless they assign you a mid-ship cabin right away when you pay. Read Less
