Even though I contacted NCL cust. svc. a least twice before boarding the ship and even I minutes before checking-in to confirm if there will be any changes on the itinerary, to have the opportunity to cancel the trip, but right after checked-in, we were warned abut complete change of itinerary for a place not even similar to the original destination. (Cozumel instead of Bahamas Islands) During the whole trip (most at sea) the crew never agreed on notifications and contradicted themselves all the times. The level of missinformation handle by NCL personnel on board was incredible and at no given time we felt that the situation was under control due to the continuous changes of notice. Also the entertainment after being forced to spend extra time at sea was dull with very few options, even the case of being notified of "continental breakfast being available from 5:30 am" (posted in a flyer) but after ariving before 6am, all buffete areas were closed even the waitreses were ashamed of it that they did the extra effort to provide a meal from Room svc. Finally, due to the continuous misinformation, we almost missed our flight because we were not able to leave the ship at earlier time. I do understand the seriousness of changes of itinerary due to a hurricane but I don't believe this is the first time happens to NCL in order to show so much improvisation. Nothig compares a trip to a caribean Isand like The Bahamas in replacement to Cozumel, MX. Bottom line, it was a very dissapointed and stressful cruise Read Less

It was our 17 years wedding anniversary and I enjoy it to the fullest. The staff was excellent and also amazing. The service was upscale. The restaurant was great lots of food. we enjoyed all the shows and so forth. Beautiful ship, spic & span. Our cabin was always perfect! The ship is easy to get around, love the design of this ship.First cruise but went be the last, problem I have now is finding ship etc that lives up to this one, as I have earlier, the staff made this a fantastic experience. This trip is not for children. We had a a world class time. Don't have a single negative to report. If you are relaxed travelers who accept things positively, you will love this cruise.A fairly roomy cabin, full-size bed with a comfortable mattress and pillows, good linens, a bedside table, cushioned armchair, decent-sized closet with dresser drawers, room to store two duffels easily under the bed, sink with medicine cabinet, and two large bed-to-ceiling windows offering great light and views as we sailed. The shower and toilet were in an enclosed space, a shower curtain kept the toilet dry during showers. Toilet and showers worked perfectly with hot water and good pressure. I did not have a meal that wasn't first class. We stayed in one of the cheaper rooms as we were on a budget. The money that was saved on the cheaper room was used to purchase other items on our trip. The room was clean, and can be compared to a five star hotel with all the high end linens. Nice sized bathroom. The on-board facilities (i.e. gym, spa, and lounges) were nicely laid out and appropriate for the size of the vessel. The gym had all the state-of-the-art machines. From the minute you land to the time you are dropped off at the airport for your return, this cruise line is excellent. Read Less

I was very skeptical going on this cruise after reading some pretty poor reviews on the Sun. I took my 2.5 year old son and mom on this cruise and it was actually wonderful... for the most part. Embarkation and debarkation was super awesome - easy and fast. The best of any cruise line. The open bar was fantastic....some bartenders were great....others not at all. We got a balcony room and it was perfect. The room service was way below average. They came and made beds and exchanged towels...that's it. A lot of people were loud and drunk all night and a few nights they kept me up. The four seasons dining experience was awful. The my time dining wasnt for us oddly enough. Service was lackluster and food was not good. However, Cagneys Steakhouse, one of the specialty dining restaurants was amazing! From the service to staff to the food, it was the highlight of our trip. Was not a fan of the private island. Yes, it's pretty but that's it. The beach is full of sharp rocks so walking into the water is painful and not recommended. We were very bored. I did the blue lagoon in nassau and it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to and my favorite day on the cruise. There isnt much for kids....at all. I knew this before going, but it really is no fun for kids. They have one tiny kids pool with small slide we found that my son loved .....and the splash academy was nice. Just not enough. The whip is very small. The staff loved my son and went out of their way to interact with him and most of th4m remembered his name. It was very special. Overall....I had a fantastic time. Read Less

Last Bahama cruise before hurricane Dorian. The ports will not look the same for years. Donated to help those affected. Such a tradegy. Best 5 day cruise.ever. Inexpensive; Inside room for 2 under $700 total. Food was good, better than other NCL cruises in the oast Theatre entertainment was fantastic: singers and dancers were very professional. Singers also danced and did quite well. Free booze was added bonus though no longer available after September Normally take longer cruises but took this cruise for relaxation and not for tours and sightseeing. Close to home (Orlando),great price Would take this ship again to different ports Only negative comment: unless taking tours in Freeport ( swimmkng with pigs?) or a beach, not much to do but visit the shops at the dock. Docks are no longer in Freport proper. Shopping center 30 minutes away by bus and through new was literally EMPTY of tourists. Read Less

I was worried about this cruise from all of the negative reviews, but after taking it I have no idea what any of the negative reviewers are talking about. The ship itself was great. It was well laid out, didn't feel crowded, and the recent update really shows. The only issue is some areas were a little hot, but nothing major. The service was great, and everybody was very friendly. The wait times at the restaurants were minimal, except for the night we went at 5:30. Go at 6:30 and you won't wait more than 10 minutes for either course. The food itself was good at both complimentary restaurants. Some interesting choices for appetizers, but you can try as many as you like. I'd compare the quality of the food to a Cheesecake factory, not perfect but perfectly good. The buffet was small but there was always something good, and the crowds didn't seem bad if you're not there right at sail away. Check out the Outdoors Cafe for a more limited menu, and it's never crowded. The wings at the Sports Bar (open until 3 am) were great too, although service here is a bit slow late at night. The bars were plentiful, and other than the pool bar you won't really find a wait. I don't know why people have complained about this in other reviews, but maybe where they're from the bartenders have a drink waiting for them before they sit down? At all the bars I visited on the ship (all of them, multiple times) I was asked what I wanted to drink within a couple minutes after sitting down. The entertainment was good, in that it was all pretty enjoyable. If you're looking for a big Broadway style show, this ship isn't for you. However, the musicians they placed around the ship were all talented, and it seemed like there was always someone playing. The casino wasn't too crowded or smoky, but the machines were stingy af but you have to expect that on a cruise. Overall, I think it was a great, clean ship. It's older so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but a lot of people like that. I think the negative reviews come from people who tend to look for things to complain about. There was a few of these on the cruise itself, but very few. Read Less

First time on a cruise and I was looking for something before end of August. Looked at different cruise lines and NCL gave me a lot more for my $$$. Loved the whole experienced and my kids (13 & 16) asked me to book it again, the same cruise! Staff was great, shows super entertaininig, the music, the comedian!! OMG i haven’t laugh so much in a long time. Food was great at all the different locations, but the Churrasqueria was even better. I didn’t do excursions with NCL, as their prices were a bit more from what you could get just by disembarking, so the i never used the credit the cruise gave us. I would do this again with NCL Sun as the experience we lived is something we will remember for ever! Thank you NCL staff, my sons enjoyed every moment of the cruise and my wife had the best Bday ever! Read Less

We wanted to visit the island of cuba, but this part of the cruise was cancelled before ever going. we decided to go ahead because we wanted to get away for a short vacation. even though we could not go to cuba, we decided to take this cruise anyway because neither of us had been to nassau and it had been 20 years since i had been on the grand bahama island. the dolphin experience on grand bahama was really, really the best. those trainers are excellent. i am just glad that we got to make this trip before hurricane dorian landed in the bahamas and now has taken some of the beauty away. I really appreciate the opportunity to have a 50% off price on the next ncl cruise since the "cuba" stop was cancelled. i spoke with many who had booked this cruise for that particular reason also. having been a travel agent in the past, i like to speak with guests and how they see these cruises and changes. One thing that i personally will recommend is the private island spa treatment. it was most relaxing. also i would recommend the dolphin experience and the sting ray visit. i myself just had a hard time standing up in the water without losing my balance. thanks to another guest who helped steady me, i could continue with this experience of touching the sting rays. Thank you ncl for a great saturday to thursday vacation in the bahamas before the hurricane hit. we did not know anything about the weather. Read Less

Free open bar cruise to the Bahamas was an extremely great value. Amazing to drink frozen drinks/champagne by the pool during the day, enjoy wine with dinner, followed by a few mixed drinks in the club the end the night, and not have to worry about what your tab is going to look like at the end of the cruise. Other than the drinks, the food was all excellent and service amazing in every restaurant we dined in. Tepanyaki was by far the best I have experienced. Our entire table had been talking after our meals and discussed having been to many other Japanese steak houses in the past, but we could all agree that the food and service in this restaurant on the Sun in particular was spectacular. There was always something to do with a long list of activities being given to you the night before. Entertainment was fun, comedian (Jay) was a cool guy and really funny in both of his shows. Overall experience was from start to finish was very enjoyable and stress free. What a vacation is supposed to be about! I would highly recommend this cruise and Norwegian Cruise Line to anybody considering cruising in the future, and I am greatly looking forward to cruising with Norwegian again! Read Less

Such a waste of time and money. I honestly don’t know where to begin. Let me start with the food. The buffet was the worst food I have ever eaten. Worse than cafeteria food. Food was cold, tasteless and thrown together. First night in main dining room my wife ordered NY Strip cooked medium. It came out well done and so thin it looked like it belonged on a sandwich. She sent it back and guess what, well done again. Sent it back the third time, yup, well done. At this point she said screw it and kept it. That was the seven seas dining room. We went to the four seasons dining room for a couple of other nights and the experience was better, mostly because of our waiter Apri. Food was just ok though. We went to two specialty restaurants, the hibachi and Cagneys. Hibachi was great, Cagneys, disappointing. The sides were good at Cagneys but the steak was just OK. Next I’ll comment on the pool. It’s chaos, plain and simple. Only two small pools which get extremely crowded with four hot tubs in-between. It was like sardines in a can. We had a balcony cabin which was small but fine. Adeline kept it clean but my wife had to ask for towel animals. I thought towel animals were made on all cruises? They even have a towel animal walking around to pose for pictures but no towel animals unless you complain? Strange to say the least. Activities were lacking to say the least, unless you want to pay $25 a card for deal or no deal or at least $39 for bingo. Both are total money grabs. There isn’t much to do on this ship, this was more of a booze cruise. Shore excursions are terribly overpriced. We booked ours through an outside agency and saved 50%. With this being my first experience with Norwegian, I can not see myself cruising with them again. Carnival was actually a much better experience. There was not much to do for our 14 year old aboard the ship. I almost forgot to mention the cruise director Jacky. Or should I say Houdini because he was no where to be found besides calling Deal or No Deal. Between the food, servers and bartenders who always looked miserable, ship, lack or entertainment, a casino with outdated machines and a poker tournament that was an absolute joke, I would not take this cruise again even if it was free. This was our first cruise with Norwegian. We had seen the ads and wanted to make our own oppinion. While the Sun is an older ship, it had been refurbished last year and the results were quite pleasing. The ships overall apperience was one of a new ship. It has been well maintained and is quite pleasant to cruise on. The air conditioning system was excellent, the lighting and plumbing were great. All of the physical plant made the cruise enjoyable and relaxing. The dining and service was very satisfactory and the bars were great. The shows were all very good and the entertainment was varied. The cruise provided enough obtions as far as times and types of entertainment that the evenings werw always enjoyable. we did not utilize shore excursions as we were just there for relaxation. But we did enjoy Great Stirrup Cay. It was great day in the sun/sea. The emarcation and demarcation went smoothly. We were very satisfied with Norwegian Sun and the NCL. We booked to go on the Norwegian Sun at the very last minute as the dates suited us. Although we have cruised over 50 times, we always stayed clear of Norwegian. Unfortunately, I read the ships reviews after booking and as a result our expectations were not very high. However, our experience turned out to be absolutely excellent. From the clean rooms to the food and service; everything was first class. I am not sure where some of the negative reviews come from, but based upon our experience, they are false. Getting on the ship was a breeze, Dining in the main restaurant was very good. The premium beverage package was well worth it, we had two dinners in the fancy restaurants, one (French) was the highlight. We were so impressed, that we purchased some of Norwegians future deposits and are already looking forward to our next cruise with them. Read Less

We booked the Norwegian Sun 3 day cruise to Bahamas as our first cruise. An experiment. Three adults (3 generations). It came with two lower beds and an upper, pull down bed . There's also a pull out couch if you need it. We were pleasantly surprised with this room. It's one of the cheapest on the ship and way down (4th floor). It has high ceilings it's spacious, suitcases fit under bed, lots of cupboard space if you want to use it (we didn't). TV, mini fridge and the bathroom is spacious. I'm writing all this because this is the kind of info I was looking for before I went. I'm claustrophobic and was worried that I'd panic but I didn't. There's no window in this room and it's way down but it was ok. Never felt the least bit anxious. Slept great (minus the women fighting next door on last night it was quiet). Felt very little, if any, movement. Love the freestyle dining, you can eat when you want. Didn't pay for the extra restaurants, just used the free ones and they were great. No complaints. Buffet good as well. Sometimes hard to get a drink, even pop, as the bars very crowded (drinks free). They should have a way for you to get pop on your own through self serve fountain. That would be my only complaint. Overall would definitely do this again! Anyone taking this cruise don't feel scared about taking a cheaper room at the bottom of the boat, they are great. Especially this one. We were right at the staircase so didn't have to walk down a long narrow hall to get to our room. That's a bonus! Read Less

Let me start by telling you that this was my 30th cruise. I have sailed on a few different cruise ships and always come back to Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. I have heard from a great deal of people that Norwegian was usually middle aged as myself. Always had good service, food, nice ships and comparable prices. All of this is very much overstated, and here's why. These cruises are overpriced to cover the cost of alcoholic drinks. Included in your total ticket price everyone gets to drink as much as you want for free. Now, for you inexperienced, armature drinkers, as my daughter referred to them as, I'm sure this sounds awesome to say the least. Free drinks only accomplishes one thing, drunk party hardy people. If this is your thing great, go for it. Norwegian reminds me of Carnival ships. The ships are for young people who have one thing in mind, getting drunk and partying the entire time. The boos was flowing freely and yes I had a few as well. I never once saw anyone get carded. Now, I can't say for sure but, some looked very young. I went to the bar and was able to get two drinks at once. How do they know I didn't give it to a minor? This is concerning to me. I would say that 50% of the people were teens to early twenties, 30% 30's and 40's,the rest were 50 and up. I have an 8 day cruise planned with a balcony on Royal Caribbean and the cost is 400.00 cheaper than this 3 day cruise! Again, they have to offset the alcohol. My cabin had a big window which was nice, the room was an OK size, the bathroom was so tiny even a mouse would be chasing his tail! I'm a small woman and it was uncomfortable for me. The rooms were clean but, the oldness of the ship shows. It is in badly need of an overhaul. Oh, and it had no outlets for cells, kindle etc. Food was terrible, the taste was not good at all, the deserts were pretty good. My husband asked for a medium steak and it was tough as nails. They did give him another choice which was OK. the waiters were extremely slow and it was not crowded. I found the entertainment very poor and lacking. The comedy show was the best and only one we enjoyed. The service was terrible in my opinion. I never had one person greet me.No was was at the gang way even to tell people which way to go, the same was when we disembarked the ship. I have no idea who are room attendant was because he/she never came by to at the last introduce themselves. I may be spoiled by Royal and Celebrity, there customer service is impeccable!. They care about there passengers. Something that we rarely see these days. We the public are the ones who keep cruises in business and everything else for that matter. Customer service ought to be the first on everyone's mind. I can't comment on the excursions because we didn't take any after being in the Bahamas several times in the past. Several people we spoke to were very dissatisfied as we were. We spoke to a couple who were in their early 30's and even they complained. So this is not so much age related as it is about quality and customer service. Taken into consideration that this is an older ship i understand some things. Would we go on Norwegian again?, NO. I'd like to say I'd try a different ship but, will customer service change? prices? drinking? In my opinion no, because they have now set the bar with free alcohol being the number one promotion! My advise, check prices, if your a heavy duty drinker it might be good for you. If your looking to drink and party and don't care about what the ship offers including customer service then you found your cruise. ES Read Less

My family and I wanted to take a end of the summer vacation together. We cruised August 16-19th. We honestly decided to cruise Norwegian because of the open bar, because we normally cruise Royal Caribbean but drink packages for 20 is a tad expensive. Norwegian open bar was really not worth it the staff was so rude and made the guest feel unwelcome like we were annoying them. The food on the ship was disappointing. A lot of the food was like hospital food with little flavor. The service from the staff was horrible. The majority of the staff including the bartenders and waiters was that they appeared to be annoyed by the guests and seem to have a careless attitude about providing good service. I have travelled on other cruise lines so I understand what quality customer service is and it was not there on this trip. When I would approach a staff member with a simple question no one ever seem to have an answer and the majority of the staff was not able to communicate basic english to answer questions like “where is the bathroom”? Or “what time are we scheduled to be at our next destination?” We upgraded one of our rooms to a balcony and it wasn’t worth it. The room was so tight that you literally had to jump over one bed to get in the room. I really wish I had a picture of that mess. Also, before cruising I was told I had to put a $300 hold per room. I did not have to do that my room key was disabled from making purchases which was fine I did not want to make any purchases. So if your wondering I set my payment to cash on checkin and never went to the service desk to change it. No $300 hold and cards disabled. For smokers they don’t sell Newport’s so don’t run out. Based on this experience this will most likely be our last cruise with Norwegian. Read Less

We chose this cruise as chance to sail out of town for a few days. Port Canaveral is convenient for us being that we are FL residents. Although we'd been to the Bahamas before, we elected to give it a try as this sailing also included a visit to NCL's private island; Great Stirrup Cay. Alrighty, onto the review... The boarding process was easy but took longer than we thought it would. We were not uncomfortable though. The port is nice and air conditioned and we made idle chit chat while we waited for our turn to board. Once our group number was called, we boarded promptly and headed to the food. We sat in the Moderno area which had a smaller buffet but it was fresh and not as crowded as the Garden Cafe side which also had a buffet. As we ate lunch, we heard the announcement over the intercom that 'our rooms were not yet ready' and 'please wait until 1:30 when we tell you you can go to yours room'. You could drop your luggage off at one of the bars (Can't remember which one) if you wanted to be free of it. There was music piped into each of the dining area which is generally a nice thing. Once you start hearing the same songs a second time, you know you've been sitting in the same spot for a while. We took a short walk around the ship. It doesn't take long to explore this ship. It's small but it's spaces are used wisely. We wandered around for a bit stopping to play a game of shuffleboard and try our hand at the driving range. I missed the fact that there was no mini golf on this ship. I'm not sure where they'd put it though. We visited the Park West Gallery folks and guessed the weight on the sculpture (we did not win). Our first dinner experience was at Cagney's Steakhouse. The guys got the filet mignon and lobster tail. Both were fabulous and prepared properly. The gals had the seafood platter which was not out-of-this-world but not bad. The red snapper was a tad dry and the calamari was underdone. Also on the seafood platter were scallops and shrimp, both of which were tasty. I ordered the truffle fries which are merely french fries with truffle oil drizzled on them, nothing to write home about. Dessert was good. None of us were going to be hungry anytime soon. Toward the end of our dining experience at the steakhouse, a couple was seated. The Mrs. was clearly intoxicated and her head lolled sloppily from side to side while she babbled merrily to the guy seated at a nearby table. Who knew we were getting dinner and a show!? Our first port was Great Stirrup Cay which is a tender port. I felt that the tendering process was slow compared to others. I do understand though. It's best to load the tender as full as possible as not to waste gas. We sat and chatted with some of the others on the boat while we all waited for it to be full. The ride to Great Stirrup Cay is super short and we got there quickly despite the long wait for our tender to depart to its destination. We found no issue in claiming 4 loungers together. The beach was ours for a couple hours and didn't start filling up until lunchtime. Lunch was pretty good as far as buffet food goes. There were plenty of fresh fruit and salad items and several different meat options such as hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and chicken. Desserts were also fine and could be found in a different area than the rest of the lunch buffet so you didn't have to wait in line again just to get a piece of cake. As a person with a sweet tooth I thought this was a smart feature. There were a few different bars serving drinks, however, there were still long lines at times. This process could be improved by offering a non alcoholic drink station near the beach. There is a drink station like this but it is located near the lunch buffet (with the desserts) which is a short walk from the actual beach area. Still, I liked the overall set-up of the private island. It also has a shopping area which is small and in my opinion, somewhat overpriced. It was nice not to be hounded to 'come into my shop', etc. The shop keepers were quiet but ready to answer questions if asked. The tender boat going back to the ship took no time to fill and we were on our way not long after we were seated. We got back in plenty of time to shower, nap, and refresh ourselves before heading to dinner. For dinner the second night, we tried Le Bistro. I liked the brightness and decor of this restaurant. French music was playing softly which added a nice touch of elegance. Unfortunately, our waiter was late for work. One of his fellow waiters, a sweet lady named Maria, came over and took our order after she realized that we had been sitting there unattended for a little while. We were very appreciative. All of us were hungry. The food was slow to come out but when it did it was presented nicely and looked appetizing. I ordered the jumbo scallops and was pleased at how delicious they were. A happy photographer came to our table, before the food, and asked if we wanted pictures. No one likes to have photos with a half-eaten plate of food so we were glad he came around before the food arrived. At the end of the meal, he returned to us, with all of the photos printed so we could decide if we wanted to purchase any of them. Our table of 4 selected 2 of the photos he had taken. It's extremely rare that any of us buy dinner photos but the photographer took his time with us and got some genuine smiles. In the end that was beneficial for us and to NCL as they made 24.95 a piece for each of the photos we bought. After dinner each night, our small party met to play games and hang out together. 3 nights is really too short to get to know the piano bar entertainer or the bands on board. We decided to use our evening as family time. We found that there was never an issue locating an empty table at which we could play games. We don't generally book a cruise based upon the entertainment so I can't really report on that. We didn't experience much of it on this sailing. Our 2nd port day was in Nassau. While in Nassau, we went on the Blue Lagoon Island excursion offered by Norwegian Cruise Line. A family member of ours had been there recently and reported good things on it. We too had a positive experience and will pass on our recommendations for visiting Blue Lagoon Island. There were 4 ships in the port of Nassau on the day we visited but you wouldn't have known it until around 11am. Ours was the first tender boat to drop people off. We arrived sometime before 9am and had our pick of any chair in any of the different seating/beach areas. Visiting the dolphins and sea lions was neat. You can actually see them without needing to purchase anything additional. The next time we are there we may try the sea lion encounter. During our walkabout we could see trainers working with the animals on their different behaviors. It was pretty cool! Our 3rd and last evening on the Sun we had a reservation for Teppanyaki. Our orders were taken first and then the show ensued. NCL seems big on hand washing. The chefs at the hibatchi grill simultaneously washed their hands in front of us while singing 'The Washy-Washy' song. Their show was a hoot. Aiko was our chef. He kept us fully entertained while he prepared our dinners. My husband stuffed himself so full of dinner that he had a hard time walking back to our state room afterward! The food was very good so he ate his meal... and then nearly half of mine! Hibatchi was never a favorite of mine but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Monday morning arrived way too fast and we were all a little bummed that another cruise had come to an end. 3 nights just seemed so short but the 4 of us were grateful for a little reprieve from real life nonetheless. We had an enjoyable time, despite a few bumps that were eventually remedied, along the way. I'm not sure this sailing was the best value for our money but we are still learning what suits us as well as what works and what doesn't as far as our cruising wants and needs go so it was good to try something new. It felt like the ship was sailing half empty! We had smooth sailing only a little rain. We booked this 3 day because we were going to visit my parents in Florida so we were flying into Orlando anyways. We got to the port around 10 and because we had latitudes status we were one of he first ones on the ship and had our first drink in hand by 11:30! We checked out he buffet and at 12 went to have lunch in the dining room. They have comment cards to rate your experience so I filled one out and the next day when we got back on the ship after great stirrup cay we had chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us from the chef! The food in the dining room was very good and the buffet was ok, not much variety but taste was good. On great stirrup cay we rented mats that were $16 each but we had the $50 shore excursion credit so they were free! In Nassau we got off the ship around 9 and there was hardly anyone around, we walked around and shopped and then headed back to the ship a little after 11 and people we headed off the 4 ships docked in droves!! We got back on and enjoyed time in the pool to cool off. We saw the comedy show by Alex Ortiz and it was excellent!! We also enjoyed some late night wings at the sports bar and although it didn’t have the variety that osheehans on the bigger boats have, they were still delicious. Disembarkation was easy, we had a leisurely breakfast in the dining room and then went up to the chaos in the buffet and went to the great outdoors and enjoyed one last mudslide before we headed off the ship a little after 9:00. We did have to wait in a line at customs but we were also waiting for my mom to come pick us up so we were in no rush. If we were there were porters there you could tip and they would take your luggage for you and take you to the front of the line. My only complaint was the cruise was too short!! That and there were no towel animals Read Less

We chose this cruise as an upgrade over some Carnival Ships we have been on in the past. This was a total disappointment. This was the Norwegian Sun out of Port Canaveral on 8/12/19. The main issues were that we were very late for 2 of the excursions, the food was not very good and the service was poor. Original schedule was for us to arrive on the second day to Key West at 1 o’clock. We did not get off the ship into Key West until 4:45 PM and we were told to be back no later than 8 PM which is basically a three hour excursion. There were multiple guests that had activities where they used a third-party and did not get their money back or would have to apply for a refund . The next day we were supposed to be at their private island Great Stirrup Cay at 11 o’clock. We were not able to board the ferry going to the island until 3 o’clock. We also were scheduled to be coming back at 8 o’clock resulting in a another excursion cut in half . The other issue with this is when you are waiting to disembark the ship they tell you not to engage in any other activities but wait in a common area to be called. So we sat around and waited two or three hours for each of these experiences while not being able to do anything else. The food on the ship was disappointing. The buffet was like a golden corral basic food. The finer dining restaurants had a few decent dishes but it was the same identical menu available in the two fine dining restaurants. A lot of the food even in these finer dining restaurants was like cafeteria or hospital food with little flavor. The service from the staff was also an issue. The majority of the staff including bartenders and waiters was that they appeared to be annoyed by the guests and seem to have a careless attitude about providing good service. Very little smiles or acknowledgment of the guests. On several occasions in the finer restaurants the waiter would approach the table and basically say “ what do you want to order”, with no other comments or questions. In some instances we had to ask for our own beverages without being requested. I travel for a living and have been on other cruises and this was different. I understand what quality customer service is and it was not evident on this trip. When I would approach a staff member with a question no one ever seem to have an answer and the majority of the staff was not able to communicate basic english to answer common questions like “where is the bathroom”? Or “what time are we scheduled to be at our next destination?” Based on the investment we made we did expect more. We upgraded to the balcony and that was nice but felt we did not get our moneys worth. Based on this experience this will most likely be our last cruise, we have had better experiences and we’re hoping for more on this one. NCL has a reputation of being a better quality cruise line and that was not the case on this trip. I am also considering posting on blogs and sending an email to NCL voicing my frustrations. Buyer Beware-- Stay Away! Read Less

First cruise with Norwegian since a truly horrendous experience on Pride of America in 2005 on the inaugural San Francisco to Hawaii trip. You would think a hospitality business would be keen to get repeat custom but given that experience plus a truly great Garden Villa experience to Alaska in 2004, we haven't heard from then in 14 years until we decided to take a quick weekend break. With that in mind we booked two weeks before our trip and without much expectation. Overall it was a decent weekend break with the usual high points and low points. Enjoyed the inclusive drinks package and being aboard the ship in general. The ports of call were not appealing to us and we only got off briefly for 30 mins at the private island and 40 mins in Nassau. The tender service was utterly appalling being kept to wait 25 mins on the journey over and 35 mins on the way back in blazing heat. That we could cope with but we were really horrified with the fact that the tender couldn't cope with a handicapped gentleman who was clearly distressed to be wedged into the stairs as they tried to carry him up a very narrow gap. This is something that has to be addressed immediately in our opinion. The cruise was something of a booze cruise to many travelers but fortunately it wasn't too bad... or maybe the weekend we chose kept it to a minimum. That said, some evidence of loud foul mouthed drunken yobs was in evidence so prepare for that if you take this cruise. Room service was excellent although the room was a little warm when trying to sleep. Food was adequate in main dining room but poor in the buffet. The buffet itself was a mess and simply not adequate in terms of how things were laid out for the number of people on board. Other ships do this so much better. Demeanor of the staff was an overriding impression and it seemed a lot were going through the motions. I don't know if this is because they no longer get tipped on drinks or that servers now have to serve the wine / alcohol but it just seemed off. I can well understand that some servers would get disillusioned by having to do more for less rewards though. Entertainment - Rock of Ages show was good, everything else was poor. Bar singers had a captive audience ready to enjoy themselves but both of them slowed the pace down and didn't seem to know the songs apart from one verse. Pool & Other activities - Pool area was basically a meat market and very crowded. Can't imagine sharing so many germs with other humans in the pool but some seem happy to do so. A place to avoid for me though. Embarkation and disembarkation were easy and overall, the cruise was fine for what we wanted. Next time we won't bother getting off the ship as we might be able to use the pool when everyone is off the ship. Read Less

I would like to say I enjoyed the cruise but when compared to other cruise lines this wasn't my best experience. I'm a vegetarian & I have a tomato allergy, I enformed them of my diet prior to sailing. Needless to say I didn't have a lot of food options, the restaurants put up a big fuss about not being aware of my diet & suggested that I have a salad or come back the following day so that they can have time to prepare food for me, the buffet wasn't any better. My boyfriend ended up paying $100 for us to eat at a restaurant BC all I was eating was stir fry. I did like how they tried to minimize the germs by having hand sanitizers at all entrances. The rooms were nice & spacious. I didn't like how the stewardess didn't really interact with us or leave towel animals, only by request. You have to pay for room service. I enjoyed the updated movies that was available to watch on t.v. The announcements that were played on the intercom weren't clear, so we missed a lot of information. Read Less

We live close to Port Canaveral and decided to take a weekend getaway with two other couples. All of us are regular cruisers and have been on just about every line out of, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and Miami. Knowing that 3 day cruises are party boats, my expectations were not high. The service on this ship was great. My cabin steward took great care of us, bar service was terrific and all dining room staff were accommodating and efficient. It was an old ship, but updated nicely and clean. Private island has a spa and when you get services you get a wonderful and healthy Buffett, free drinks and private beach access with the use of free floats. I cannot say enough about what a great day we had at the private club on the island. Didn’t do the general population on the island, but people on the tenders said that was great too. Entertainment was adequate, nothing special, but enjoyable. Cruise director and staff were friendly. Bar staff and service was great at all he bars and wait staff by the pool was plentiful. Now for the issues: I like to play blackjack. Lowest table limit was $15. I thought that was exorbitant. Princess, Celebrity, RCCL and Carnival all have 5, 6 or 10 dollar tables. Also the slot machines were not any of the newer games that are on the other ships. When I asked about lowering the limits the person who came to chat with me was arrogant, condescending and basically said tough. Another thing the smoke in the casino was horrendous. Another issue is the sports bar. They have many televisions, but only one channel. I wanted to watch a football game that was on, but was told they only get 1 channel. Obviously, this has been an ongoing issue for fans. The bartender was very sweet and basically just referred me to guest services. He did not want to say much, but I got the impression Norwegian doesn’t want to pay for the package that includes the sports channel. Let’s talk food. Dining room was good, but everything was very salty. Only ate at the Buffett twice and was not impressed. Didn’t eat most of my meal. Last issue I had were with the public restrooms. They were clean, but all had a horrible odor. Let me be clear, I had fun, but the above issues were enough to say, I probably will use other lines for future weekend cruises. Read Less

We found a decent deal on this voyage, most likely because of the closure of the Cuba itinerary. At the last minute NCL was forced to change its Cuba run to a sad Nassau run. We figured the destination wasn’t as important to us as a getaway in the sun and some time to unplug and relax. Sadly, NCL is all about keeping the 20-somethings happy, drunk and “energized.” And NCL nickles and dimes you to death. What started as a $1200 package (with balcony upgrade and insurance due to an ailing family member) turned into a MUCH more expensive weekend. But worse, there was NOTHING relaxing about this ship. First, I considered the open bar to be a nice idea. We could sip a few pink drinks with paper umbrellas as we enjoyed the sun by the pool, in the Caribbean sun and vibe, right? Great idea. Not even close. The evening we began the journey, the college-aged boys began doing the contest drinking by the pool, standing at the edge, flexing and trying to spontaneously elicit cheers from the crowd as they chugged enormous amounts of drinks from long beer-bong type things. Vomit ensued in various parts of the ship (of course). Later, they crawled off to various cabins which improved things. Additionally, you are given way-overpriced options to upgrade your beverages the first day. $30 per person per cabin per day to include top shelf booze, unlimited energy drinks (think-really drunk, hyper caffeinated frat boys) and unlimited bottles of water. Also half way decent wine with dinner instead of super cheap wine. Ok, I thought it might be worth it for the wine, and for me since I planned on having a few drinks. Unfortunately we both were required. So $60 per day. It was Friday evening with a Monday early am disembarkation. That meant either $180 since Monday isn’t at sea, right? Check your bill. $240 was added to ours. Leaving at 7:30 am means you don’t even get a mimosa with breakfast, and if you did, it would be a $30 mimosa. The facilities were quite nice. The pool was salt water which was really lovely once the large children calmed down a bit. The sensation of buoyancy in the water on the gently rocking boat was very soothing and enjoyable. Also, the ship was overhauled last year in preparation for being used for travel to Cuba. Sadly the current administration cut that off, so now they have a really nice ship being used for booze cruises, typically reserved for older ships. The dining haul is spotless, the rooms were nice and clean and service was decent including turn down service. Lock your valuables in the safe though. I “lost” a diamond ring I left on the small tray by the coffee pot. I should have remembered to put it in the safe...my bad. But the ship resisted having someone come to investigate. The ring was not a favorite and not terribly expensive. I didn’t want anyone to lose their job, so I just took the loss. I should have put it in the safe. Dinner in the main dining room was nice. Being early diners, we were able to receive window tables two of three nights. The food was good but not stellar. We sent back cold appetizers and received luke warm appetizers, and had issues with the temp of our steaks. But the steaks themselves were very tender when they were cooked properly. No lobster or higher end seafood which is a bummer on a Caribbean cruise. There are a couple fish dishes but they looked unappealing. Deserts were better than Royal Caribbean or Carnival offerings. The wines with the upgraded beverage plan were decent-to-good $40-$50 bottles at normal retail, though the prices they listed them at on the menu were nonsense. Service was very nice and wait staff was quite attentive. You will need to future out how to find out about ship activities each days. The announcements were barely audible, so no help there. The brochures were hit or miss. We found out late that picture night was night two. That’s ok, they cost too much anyway. The private island had the chance to be great. As it was it was just good. The water was nice and the snorkeling was good, as long as the sun stayed out. When the sun goes behind clouds it is hard to see the beauty of the coral and fish. When the sun is out and you get right up to the rocks, the colors are lovely. Not Great Barrier Reef lovely, but definitely worth the effort, if not the $30 leaky mask. I would recommend this one, but if you can, bring your own mask and snorkel, save the money and enjoy the experience a bit more. You snorkel immediately where the ship lets you off so it would be easy to bring your own gear. Sadly, there were Norwegian Cruise Lines plastic cups scattered throughout the reef. Nassau is a terrible destination. The smell is of baking urine and regret. You are hassled mercilessly for money from the moment you step off the ship. Taxis, scooters, tours, horse and buggy rides (we took one, supposed to be 25 minutes, barely 10) and everything else you can imagine. You will feel abused after an hour on the island. The straw market is another place where you will be accosted and robbed for every penny you can be convinced to depart with. Skip it all and head to a beach. You will over pay for the taxi but overpaying once is better than being panhandled continually. By noon we were ready to get back on the ship. But this was the absolute worst part of the cruise for me, and it negatively colored every bit of the rest of the experience. And it was fully within this ship’s ability to correct, which made it even more infuriating. We decided to go hang out and relax by the pool and enjoy the sun, a drink or two, and some much-needed down time. Most of the 20-somethings were still sleeping off bad hangovers or on the island. The crowd was older. But the buffoon playing “music” by the pool was quite full if himself and his talent. The loud, thrumming techno-dance vibe garbage he was “playing” at 100% full volume was suitable for a night club I suppose, but certainly not for the atmosphere of an afternoon by the pool in the bahamas. He did something to older and newer songs to make them all exactly this very high intensity, mind-numbing beat, and every two or three songs, escalated them into a ramp up of a high wail. It was absolutely the equivalent of Dante’s 7th level of hell. In fact, if I do end up in hell, this will be the soundtrack. There was no escaping it. The only way you would see people letting go of the deck chairs they reserve all day is by playing this garbage. People would come, lay down, put things over their heads, put on headphones, move further away, and finally leave. It was outright maddening. Keep in mind that on a Friday - Monday cruise you really only have two full days to relax in the sun. NCL snuffed out one of those days completely by letting the soundtrack of the tilt-a-whirl at the Mall parking lot carnival rule the atmosphere. The “cruise director” should be keel hauled for allowing it. It really ruined the entire day, and thereby ruined fully half the cruise. Frankly, all the other things that were annoying paled in comparison of rendering the pool unusable by the audio assault. It was that bad. It was definitely not “high-energy” as was obviously being attempted. It was “near-death.” After two hours of trying to extract enough vitamin D to overcome my plummeting mood, we gave up and went inside. With little else to do, we retreated to our cabin and read a book. Yay. What an incredible waste of a day and money. RCL, you have the opportunity to turn a sad issue of a reconfigured itinerary into a decent experience. Nassau is awful but that can’t be fixed. Lose the “all you can possibly consume and then vomit back up” booze fest. Improve the dining room menu slightly, improve overall communications, and for God’s sake lose the souped-up Mazda beater car on steroids sounds going on by the pool. A little bit of effort to upscale the event itself would turn the frat party booze cruise/vomit fest into an experience that could be enjoyed by all, including those who don’t slug a round, belch loudly, high five and chest bump. Next cruise for me is back to another line. Read Less

This is our second time on the Norwegian Sun. It's a quick drive for us to get to and we enjoy getting away for a quick, relaxing weekend. On a previous cruise we met the principal singer Drake Allen. What an absolute pleasure to listen to him each night. He is a talented singer and guitar player and the crowd really enjoys listening to him. I hope we run into him on a future cruise! There was also a new group of singers and dancers at the Starlight Theatre. They were definitely better than the group in May. We met Jamieson and Liam personally and they were genuine and gifted performers. Embarkation continues to be slow however the disembarkation was a breeze! The areas of the ship that were refreshed look much better than previously. The mirrors in the bathrooms and the shower curtains need to be replaced as they bring down the overall effort that was made to spruce her up. The restaurants were very good this time and the staff was very pleasant. We have nothing but good to say about each meal we had. We did not get off the ship for excursions as this was truly a relaxing voyage for us and loved every minute of it. Read Less

had a lot of people tell me about cruising, so I decide to try it for myself and wife my overall experience with the Norwegian cruise is that it had unlimited drinks and if you booked a stateroom you get 2 free offers. I choose premium drinks, and speciality dining. but was disappointed when I try to order mich ultra beer no bars on the ship had it, I only drink beers no hard stuff.so that was 1 disappointment on the first day, we boarded at 2.00pm and barely got lunch from the outside café buffet bar, before all the restaurant closed for 45 mins for initiation drill. that is another disappointment, food were only at buffet stations during the days made up of hot dogs and burgers, salad, fruits, cakes. that is no no for me it cost 1300 for 3days to come and eat hot dogs and burgers all day long. also restaurant for fine dining only open at 4.00pm or 5.oopm before you can eat something better than buffet.it should be open all day and night long for passenger to choose. desk service was poor for me and my wife had a women at the desk never smile when you ask a question about the excursion she will answer very short not reassuring us about anything else. I don't think I will pay 1300 to 1400 dollars for 3 day cruise for just hot dogs and burgers during the day it too over rated for me. Read Less

First time on Norwegian, was very impressed with service, food and entertainment. Found that getting around the ship was easy and much quicker than other cruises. The dining experience was also a bonus. Easy to make reservations for the different dining rooms. The service staff was attentive and very friendly. We were pleasantly surprised with the size of our inside room. We normally like a balcony, but we were very comfortable in this cabin. We also found that when we needed to ask guest service questions, there were very short lines which was quite a plus. The embarkation process was simple and quick and the debarkation was the quickest and easiest we have ever gone through. The food available at the buffet was very good and we loved the choices for dinner. We did notice there wasn’t a lot of fish or seafood choices though. We did take advantage of the future cruise promotion which we are looking forward to. Read Less

After reading numerous reviews, talking to friends who have sailed on NCL, finally decided to dip our toes in the water on NCL after sailing 15+ times on RCCL, 5+ times on Disney and regrettably one time on Carnival. I couldn’t have been shocked at the customer service throughout the cruise. The initial walk aboard buffet is usually just blah, this one was a top 10 welcome aboard buffet. Food throughout the cruise was fantastic with only one area I believe needs addressing or can be skipped on your journey if you are sailing on NCL Sun. We ate at numerous places for breakfast and lunch and specialty restaurants for dinner. La Bistro (French) and the Sushi restaurant were both outstanding and I would definitely eat at next time. However; Cagney’s (steakhouse) was okay. Great appetizers, soup, salad, sides and dessert (especially the OMG cheese cake and raspberry creme brûlée). But, when it came to the steaks they were okay at best. Both the actual cut of meat and the temperature cooked at were a 3 or 4 on a scale of 1-10 from what you would expect from a steakhouse. We ate dinner here twice, hoping the second time would make up for the first time. Try the non steak and seafood items because the rest of the meal was fantastic especially the potatoes au gratin and garlic mashed potatoes. And like I said earlier the Sushi and La Bistro was fantastic as well as the rest of the food on board the ship. The ship felt new from the refurb it got last year in 2018. Staff throughout was great. We spent over 6 hours in the spa on various treatments and they were all excellent. The bartenders were all friendly especially Carlo. Thumbs up to him! In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this cruise to anyone looking to get away and either relax, party, and anything in between. Read Less
