We love Norwegian Cruise lines and sailed on The Sun in April 2015 and on the Star in Dec. 2015. Friends were going, so we booked too. Being with friends was the only good part. It took 2 hours and 45 min. to board, then they demanded that we go straight to the drill. It was 4 o'clock before we could find a bathroom and beg a hot dog for lunch. Couples with hungry and exhausted children were very upset. Only two shows all week, both were wonderful. The casual entertainment at smaller venues around the ship were OK, but some were as much as $50 per person. Dinners took forever and 1/3 of the items on the dining room menu were extra charges. Don't expect shrimp cocktail, escargot or lobster on this ship. The food was all very tasty and properly served. We never saw our cabin steward until our last day. Also, something was missing from our room and when we called to complained, it was returned within a few hours. Over an hour in line to disembark. We saw a woman faint, her husband sat her on the stairs and he was told to move her, he could not, she was unresponsive. Then he was told to leave her and go to one of the lounges and get a wheelchair. No crew help whatsoever, though passengers nearby were very helpful. This ship has three small atriums, not the usual one large atrium. The casino runs the length of the ship, so on all three public floors, the noise and smoke from the casino, makes finding a quiet spot impossible, and the dining room seems part of the casino chaos. Wanted to sail on the biggest and the best. In the past we loved NCL but never again. Every day they continued to disappoint. Had to pay for yoga. Had to pay for deluxe meals in the main dining area. Long lines everywhere. Took a hour and a half to get off the ship. It looks like a regular ship where they added 3 more layers of people and no extra facilities. The one nice thing was our room where we spent a lot of time as everything else was such a mess. The food was just ok. Even had lines in the buffet area. So too many people and not the cruise experience we have had in the past with great food and entertainment. No place to sit out side at night as they put the deck chairs away early. And not much deck as they put all that area into rooms. NEVER AGAIN ON NCL!!! Read Less

We originately booked Norwegian Spirit for Dec. 3, 2016 and was advised the ship had been chartered and we would have to select another ship that had the same itinerary and chose the Epic. The ship was big with 4100 passengers and we thought was poorly designed for the number of passengers. We had an inside cabin which was smaller than other ships we have sailed and had poor lighting and a poor design with a small sink inside the cabin. Reservations were required for dining and shows and lines waiting to be admitted was at each venue. Service at MDR was very slow (almost always had a 3 hour dining, breakfast and lunch experience). One time even with reservations was told they were full and told us to try another restaurant. We made reservations before boarding for the twom free main shows and when we showed up we were told our reservation were not in their system. I recommend making copies of everything before boarding on this ship. Minimum activities are offered during the day if your not a pool person. Due to the Mathew storm we were directed to Nassau instead of Great Stirrup Cay. Been there many times and just walked down thru Bay Street. We had been to St. Thomas many times and this time tool the Gable Ride up to Paradice Point ($21.00 per person). In Tortola we walked to the ferry about 10 min and paid $38.00 to go to the Baths in Virgin Gorda (senior price is $28.00) well worth it. If you can I would recommend going thru the caves. Not recommended if you are very tall or a big person because you will be crawling and going thru very small crevises. Will never book this ship again. This ship is too big and too many pasengers every where. Read Less

We have cruised with Norwegian before (on the Getaway, Dawn, Pride of America) and never had a problem. We've been on over 30 cruises total. But this was the worst cruise we've ever taken. It started with an over 1 1/2 hour delay getting on board (we heard over 3 hours for others). The port was under construction, so we had to park in their port but get bused to another port where the ship was. We arrived at 11 a.m. and didn't get onboard until after almost 1:30 (we are usually eating lunch in their pool-level cafe by 11:30-noon). The lines were horrible, and we heard their computers went down around 11 a.m. Whatever the problems, it was a terrible start to everyone's vacation. First-time cruisers were saying they'd never cruise again if this was what it was usually like getting on the ship (fortunately, it isn't). We had a basic balcony room with the worst layout we've ever seen on a ship. The shower is on one side of the room next to the front door, the toilet on the other, and the sink outside next to the shower. I don't know about others, but I like a sink in the same room with the toilet where I might need it. The shower and toilet "rooms" had their own lights, but no privacy when you turned them on since there were no real "room" doors. Yuck. The couch faced the closet so you couldn't see the TV from it and could not sit on it without making it impossible for anyone to get into the closet. Stupid. The only place to watch TV was by sitting or laying on your bed. You also must insert your stateroom card into a slot inside to use any lights. Of course, if you forget to remove it and take it with you when you leave your room, you're now locked out! Yes, the door automatically locks with your card still inside the room. We had to locate our room steward 3 times to let us in our own room over a 7-day cruise. Absurd and inconvenient for us and them. At least our Room Steward, Richard, was wonderful and always there when we needed him! We only ate in the main "Manhattan" dining room once because it took us 2 1/2 hours to eat dinner there. When we did finally get it, it was horrible (the veal was so tough I couldn't cut it with my husband's very sharp steak knife). The foursome at the table next to us were complaining to their waiter about how bad their food was too. Fortunately, we had reservations at three specialty restaurants, so that helped and they were great. Of course, you will pay about $60 a couple more to eat in each of them. We've always gotten very good food and service on other ship's main dining rooms, but this was awful. You don't even get lobster even one night in the main dining room anymore unless you pay another $25 per person for it (and there's an extra charge for it even in the speciality restaurants!). Amazing. The venues for the shows were so small for an over 5,000 person ship it was laughable. You had to have a reservation for every show, even the small magic and comedy shows. Even the Trivia games were so packed it was standing room only unless you arrived at least 1/2 hour before game time. The show rooms were laid out awful, so unless you were in the very front row, you couldn't see the shows. Their main theatre is only one floor and can't fit nearly enough people for such a large ship which is why you had to have a reservation. Disembarkation was really bad too. You had to go to Guest Services to get your luggage tags (and didn't know it). They didn't show up in our room the day before, so we knew to ask at least. We had to wait about 2 hours to get off the ship because for some reason they were running about 45 minutes behind with that too. You couldn't find an elevator because so many people were taking their own luggage off and filling up every elevator with it all the day we disembarked off the ship. What was worse was that they wouldn't let you take the stairs either even if you had no luggage! They had them blocked off from the 7th floor up! When we got our bill the morning of disembarkation, we learned that $120 of our On-Board Credits were not used because they did not apply it toward our pre-paid tips (which we budgeted for). Instead, they charged our credit card automatically. Of course, it was now too late to get it back another way (like in the casino!). There were so many things wrong about this cruise from beginning to end that I can't even list it all here without writing a book. Read Less

Getting on the boat took 1 hour 20 min to start with, even though they had assigned times. Got to the room short bed (at 5 foot 3 I hung off the end), very small shower and toilet area separated by a curtain. The balcony was awesome, was enclosed so offered privacy. Waiting for the elevators was a hassle because with 5000 people on the ship it was faster to take the stairs. Making reservations for the restaurants was a joke, the hostess was the one who also seated you. So it took extra time to do both. They should have had a hostess plus someone to seat you. The restaurants all seemed to be short staffed with servers. One place had to come back and ask what our sides were, then brought the baked potato toppings AFTER we finished eating. The drink package was great except they ran out of mudslide mix on the second day. The shows were pretty good, Cirque Dinner show was great, dinner was OK. The ports were good had good excursions, that were well organized. Getting off was easier than getting on. Overall, just very disappointed with the cruise. Read Less

Day one we arrived at the Pier to wait in a line for over 2 hours, we were never told why it was taking so long just waiting. When we finally got to the Security part The guard kidding around said this is just step one you have a while to go. We walked upstairs to get checked in people were in really ugly moods. Nobody smiling guests complaining they were tired, hungry and aggravated that they had to wait yet in another very long line. Got up to the desk and gave the women all our information she asked me what cabin I was in I told her we were one of those "guaranteed cabins" she said well if you don't know your number I certainly don't! I explained we weren't told the number because we weren't assigned until the very end. She was very nasty and stomped away she came back and said you made this very difficult! I then gave her my credit card which is my business credit card with my name d.b.a. she asked for a picture ID which I gave her and she ran the card and then handed us our room keys. We then walked onto the ship no photos were taking nor were they checked. We didn't even get Welcome Aboard photos done. There was a group of about 20 of us walking together there were no NCL Crew members to welcome us aboard to tell us what direction to go to. We walked through the doors as if we had been on a ghost ship. We went to our cabin to unload and relax for a few minutes again starving. We came out of our room to be told by the room guy that they were doing the frill we needed to go to deck 7 so we did no announcements nothing! We got to Deck 7 people were sitting around drinking and socializing we walked around and finally asked about the drill they stated we missed it. How do they run a drill without everyone being onboard???? SO we went upstairs to get "food" we got in a line that was going to take another hour to get to the food everyone still complaining, we finally got to the front of the line to be told they were closing the outside area that we needed to go inside, so we went inside to be put into another very long line! Now lets get to the drink service or servers which were none to none! The servers were very hard to find the bar line was always way to long and the servers were way to slow!! The first day on deck we finally got a server to come up on deck my husband asked for a bucket of beers I asked him does Corona's come in the bottle he said NO so my husband said Ok I want 3 Bud LIghts and what does come in a bottle he says Heineken, Coronas and something else so I said so Corona's do come in a bottle he said YES! I shook my head and said ok 3 Bud lights and 3 Coronas he said ok the women beside me asked for a coke and the women beside her asked for a bloody mary with ice on the side and extra olives. HE left to return with the bucket of beers approximately 1 hour from the time we ordered them then he returned about 1 1/2 later with the coke and bloody mary with no ice on the side and no extra olives! My husband then asked him if we could get some limes he said LIMES my husband said yes for the Corona's he said oh ok! He returned 2 hours later we were at lunch and placed the cup of limes in our bucket. That is just a hint of the service when and if you got any. The Manhattan Room Dining Room...food was ok they will not let you substitute anything and their new thing is what they like to call Supplements for more money so if you don't like their choices for that evening they you can order something and pay for it. Waiters were not at all friendly was probably the worst I have ever seen as far as non friendly people go they were so unfriendly it hurt. This cruiseline has lost my family for cruising we cruise a lot I wrote a letter voicing my disappointment and received a lovely form letter that took no time at all from a very once again lazy Norwegian Employee. We will not be traveling Norwegian for a very long time. They in my opinion are the worst!!!! Read Less

We were extremely disappointed with the cruise in general. It wasnt advertised as being trans Atlantic so we were at sea for 6 days , and we had no use of the pool for 9 days and there was no alternative activities or entertainment to compensate for this. They also ran out of alcohol 4 days before the end of the cruise. The food in the upstairs buffet was excellent and the staff on board were helpful and very polite. The trips were enjoyable but not enough time was allowed to see enough of the islands. I have contacted your company on several occasions to voice my disappointment and nothing has been done to my satisfaction . I feel completely let down by the whole experience and would not travel or recommend the company in the future. Do not go with this company unless you want to be ripped off. This cruise was a HUGE disappointment! The food was absolutely disgusting! The service was terrible! Sat for dinner at 7pm. and finally got served our main dish at 8:50, after I asked for it. Chinese restaurant was also horrible! The cabins were very small and the hair dryer is a joke from the 60's. Lady had a heart attack in the dining room, took up to 30 min. for help to come. When they finally came, NO one knew how to lower the gurney. The lady had to eventually crawl up unto the gurney! Approx. 40 min. before they wheeled her out of the dining room, UNACCEPTABE !! The ship is very old! I've been on 2 recent ships, and they were both excellent! No complaints. Wouldn't recommend the Spirit to anyone. Our room was under the kids court, very noisy!! Our room raddled terribly, at the back of the ship. The disembarkment was ridiculous! Line up was a mile long through customs. If I hadn't just experienced 2 of the most beautiful cruises prior, I may not of known the difference. I honestly would not go on the Spirit again, not even if they offered me a free cruise! NCL “SPIRIT” CRUISE 1/30 TO 2/6/2016 CABIN 5052 UNACCEPTABLE CRUISE CONDITIONS When I first entered my assigned cabin something smelled really nasty! Could not locate the source so I let it go hoping the offensive odor would go away once we were underway. That didn’t happen, so I lived with it for seven days. Needless to say, I spent minimum time in my cabin, only sleep time. I’m back home now, but the odor lingers in my clothing. I’ve laundered them but the odor is still present. The cabin was filthy, the carpet looked like it hadn’t been vacuumed in weeks. The pillows are stained, the towels felt like sandpaper, one had a hole in it. Wash cloths were provided every other day. The drinking glasses were not washed the entire cruise, rinsed out maybe, but still had stickiness on the insides. The toilet got temperamental at times and wouldn’t flush. Unfortunately it picked the “worse” times, I don’t want to have to spell it out! Onward to food, what a disappointment! I had a Dining Package, I was looking forward to four nights of excellent steaks at Cagney’s. It got so bad I cancelled the last night. So I paid for four, got three unforgettable meals, not “good” unforgettable. First night, I ordered a boneless rib-eye, no special sauces or spices, just cooked. I ordered it cooked medium, it came rare, and cold. Likewise, the broccoli was cold. I only ate half the rib-eye, the other half was uncuttable. The desert was good. The coffee was too strong, I’m a career Navy Chief, I like strong coffee, but this was more grounds then liquid. Meal number two at Cagney’s, 5 oz filet, ordered same as the rib-eye. The filet was ok, a little chewy, but otherwise, ok. The string beans and Au Gratin potatoes were served cold. Desert was good, didn’t order coffee, I’m a quick learner. And on to number three, ordered the 5 oz filet again, with salad and broccoli. What a mistake, I waited an hour and a half for my meal. Finally asked the hostess to check on it for me. She went to the kitchen and came right back out with my order! Now here’s a meal that has been setting somewhere for a long period of time, and yes, the entire meal was cold. Did the hostess come back to see if it was ok, no, why look for trouble, captive customer! My other meals were at The Windows, The Garden, and Blue Lagoon. I ate at the Blue Lagoon the last night of the cruise. Wish I had known about it sooner. Only place I had an edible meal, served fast and was hot when I got it! At The Windows I ordered the lasagna, the meat was more onions then meat. I’m allergic to onions, I scraped the onions and meat filling off the pasta, and ate just the pasta. The server didn’t ask if there was something wrong with my meal. I ate at the Garden twice, Cordon Bleu Chicken first time, too dry, couldn’t eat it. Second time was Roast Turkey, I have no idea what was wrong with it but it smelled and tasted strange. Luckily I only ate one piece of meat. I tasted the dressing, potatoes, and brussel sprouts. Same strange flavor. I barely made it to the closest rest room before I got sick! Raffles was ok, went there only for snacks of fresh fruit. There were a lot of other problems but I think you get the idea of why I didn’t enjoy the cruise. One more, don’t laugh, one of the restrooms on the pool side of Raffles has steaming hot water flushing the toilet! I found out the hard way…had steam burns where no man should have them! I notified an officer that was walking by when I exited the restroom. I assume he has something to do with maintenance. He was accompanied by two men in blue work clothes. AND NOW, TO ADD INSULT TO THE SITUATION I had another cruise on the Spirit scheduled for 16 April 2016, paid for. I want to cancel because of the cruise I just completed on the Spirit. I have to pay a penalty for cancelling!!!! I’ve been shuffled around to four “NCL” phone numbers, all provided by NCL agents. None of the phone numbers were where I needed to be calling. Two were actually other companies! So, I called 1-800-327-7030 again, asked for Guest Relations, was asked question after question, and was finally transferred to Guest Relations. At least I think I was, I waited 30 minutes on hold. Gave up, will call back later. I’ve spent the last 2 hours on the phone trying to get this resolved. I don’t feel that I should have to pay a penalty for cancelling a second trip on the NCL Spirit. And to make things more difficult, I am partially deaf, I use my hearing aids, a special phone, and a headset when I HAVE to use the phone. Read Less

Re: Trapped in the Norwegian Spirit PRISON SHIP Two week cruise from December 19, 2015 to January 2, 2016 Escaped on December 26, 2015 The amoral management of Norwegian Cruise lines displays no guilt in running sleek ads on the NORWEGIAN SPIRIT promising a "Dream Cruise, but that is NOT what they will deliver. As Motel 6 is to the Ritz-Carlton, as a 1* star hotel is to a 5* hotel, as a traveling carnival is to Disneyworld, prepare yourself to cruise like it's 1985 in one of the WORST cruise ships in the world. Cruise lines spend billions of dollars building mega-floating palaces that take your breath away the moment you set of on them. That is the MODERN cruise experience that makes cruising fun. The NORWEGIAN SPIRIT is the absolute opposite of this. Norwegian Cruise lines has spared no expense to give you the ultimate PRISON SHIP experience by combining the total BOREDOM you would experience by being thrown in a jail cell and unable to escape with ghetto quality 1 STAR slum accommodations, combined with HORRIBLE Cafeteria style PRISON QUALITY food...everything is ship is cheap... mold in the bathroom tiles and sewer smells in the bathroom, they have that too and more. Dry your self with old cheap towels and waddle away the hours doing well...NOTHING! unless playing bingo while socializing with a motley crew of obese passengers is your idea of an "amazing getaway vacation". This ship will give you theeee most MISERABLE CRUISE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME. If you have never cruised before you have no point of comparison. But, if you are like me who did my first cruise on Royal Caribbean in 1987 you will understand how dated the design of this ship was before it was even launched in 1998. Having had the experience of cruising in amazing ships, the NORWEGIAN SPIRIT feels like the equivalent of a PRISON SHIP because I am stuck here in this hell hole while I write this with nothing to do and BORED OUT OF MY MIND until we reach Port Canaveral in tomorrow. I should have turned around the moment we boarded on December 19th and realized that this ship should have been sunk and made into a coral reef. The very next day I knew that there was no way that I could spend 14 days in this ship and I changed my return airline tickets from Jan.2nd to Dec.26th, the day that the ship was set to return back to Orlando, Fl. I am so sorry that I trusted Norwegian Cruise lines would deliver a quality experience and surely they would not give an experienced passenger like me the feeling of being defrauded, but they did. If you are the type of traveler that expects a minimum level of luxury just know that Motel 6 makes this ship feel like the Ritz Carlton. This ship is an embarrassment to their brand, and an embarrassment to the shortsighted executive management of this company in their failure to understand that an experienced cruise traveler will find this ship to be REPULSIVE. This ship is the equivalent of Gucci selling you a Walmart quality handbag. It's company that based on the bad reviews you see on this site going back years, that has no scruples in getting suckers like me to trust their brand name, and screw you like no other company. TAKE HEED OF WHAT I WRITE BECAUSE THIS IS YOUR WARNING!!! This trip has cost me well over $9,500 for the TWO WEEK cruise + airfaire + penalty for changing my return flights + hotel stay and I am getting the hell out here after ONE WEEK because I cannot stand to be inside this old beaten BORING, BORING, BORING ship an extra day. The architecture and design of this ship is so old that it will insult your sensitivity and good taste. As a matter of background, I did my last two cruises with Norwegian and assumed incorrectly that this company had a standard of quality that could be trusted, but this was not the case. Unfortunately, I chose this ship based on my desire to spend New Year's eve on a ship, something I have done multiple times, and the ports of call. So now I payed the price of being damned into CRUISING PURGATORY for having committed the crime of not having read the horrible reviews that others have written about this ship. The NORWEGIAN SPIRIT is a pathetic old ship without a soul manned with a crew of zombie type employees that walk around without an expression on their faces. It's like an old whore that it is still turning tricks for $1.95 except that the pimping management lures with pretty pictures and fake promises of an "amazing vacation" to pay full-fare. By the time you board this ship it will be too late and you will sense the HORROR of being stuck here until the cruise is over. You will never see an employee smile or display any signs of happiness here because if it is miserable for the passengers, it is even worse for the crew that are stuck here for months. The crew members seem to be deep into the same funk and you see their eyes a human being screaming to be let free from the torture of being on this ship. THE FOOD You would think that having the handicap of being an old ship that they would balance it off with great food but that is not the case. The food on this ship is HORRIBLE, bland, tasteless and presented with no imagination. The quality is the week old reheated mush left-overs in your refrigerator. The food is served dry, overcooked, and the meats are tough to chew. No matter what restaurant you eat at, everything seems to come out of the same kitchen run by amateurs. Unlike every other ship I've been in, there is no daily change in selection and you are offered the almost the same identical menu every day. Doors leading to the same restaurant have different names but again offer the same menu. We tried going to one of their "specialty" restaurants but the food was just as bad. By the 3nd day you will reach a point that you don't care anymore. On the plus side this is one cruise in which you will LOSE WEIGHT as I have already lost at least five pounds. THE ROOM As a "hotel" I give this ship 1 star (*) The rooms are incredibly small with barely over two feet between the bed and the wall. The grout on the old bathroom tiles are filled with mold, and my room had red something on the grout that looked like the leftover of a crime scene. The balcony barely fits the two chairs they throw in there with the leg-room of an economy airline seat but the glass railing is so filthy dirty that the balcony is only there for show. The bath towels are old, and overused beyond their expiration date and so worn-out rough that they feel like sand-paper and when you dry your body or face it will turn red. On the plus side those towels will give you a free dermabrasion. The TV in the room is about 18" and I got so sick of the K-Mart type announcements that I disconnected it. The ship has an old intercom system and they have these annoying announcements every times an hour. They have cut so many corners on this ship that even the most basic health standard like having toilet seat covers anywhere in the ship, even the common area is non-existent. While they make sure your hands are clean and crew is everywhere with spray bottles they don't care at all if you use unprotected toilet seats. THE AMENITIES There is NOTHING much to do and NOWHERE TO GO in this ship. The main entertainment they offer is a nightly show and of course the casino. On the plus side the shows range from OK to Excellent but they last only about 45 minutes. There are several pianos throughout the ship, but you will not see anyone playing them. The lounge music is either one man with a guitar, or that old standard from the 1980's a Filipino couple playing 70's music. The music is old, dated and stale just like this ship so you will cruise like it's 1985. The ship is extremely small and packed with so many passengers that wherever you go you feel like you are at Walmart on Black Friday. The range of entertainment while at sea are the old standards like Bingo, Ping-Pong and you can play chess or Monopoly in the game room, Woo-hoo!!! The highlite of the evenings is the sales they have in Chinese watches, T-Shirts and custom jewelry. Plainly disgusting... The only thing that is saving my sanity was access to the internet for which I paid $208 for unlimited use and have spent over 3,000 minutes. Where it not for the internet I would be going out of my mind and contemplating hara-kiri but then again you could say that this ship offers UNLIMITED BOREDOM. Unfortunately the internet is slower than molasses and equivalent to dial-up in the early 1990's. THE SHIP EXTERIOR The size of the pool is what most people build in their backyard, maybe 20 feet long by 14', so it was always full like a community public pool. The same with the lounge chairs, not enough for 2,000+ passengers so we gave up trying to find one. THE TOURS The first week of this trip the ship was scheduled to make three stops and we bought tours for all three, but cancelled on two islands when I saw that the weather predicted rain. As it turns out, it did not rain, but the prices they charge average $100-150 per person. We were scheduled for four islands next week, but the thought of spending an extra day on this ship is UNBEARABLE. I do have to say one thing that this ship has done for me and this is an existential revelation. After having cruised the Caribbean for at least seven times, I am never coming back here. As we toured this time the islands of Tortola, Nassau and St. Thomas and once again saw the extreme poverty of the black ghettos, tiny houses with tin roofs and raw jungles, I asked myself what am I doing here??? I realized that it is not worth it anymore to make such a long trip just for a beach. I live nine miles from the beach in Malibu, California, Hawaii is only five hours flight and of course anywhere in Mexico within a few hours. You see, in the past the pleasure was always in going back to the ship and experiencing luxury, but the NORWEGIAN SPIRIT is not the opposite of a luxury ship, it is more like the legendary Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that was cursed to be at sea and never touch dry land. ENTERTAINMENT This ship is so incredibly small by today's standards so what they provide for entertainment while at sea is limited. For recreation they offer ping-pong tables, shuffle board, monopoly, chess, basketball, and they one single pool table, all the elements you need to be BORED out of your mind. Do take note of one fact, the management of this company has read the negative reviews on this ship but they will do nothing because they have made a calculated assumption that a sucker is born every minute and most people either don't read the reviews or they can stand to lose a few customers. Notice how they run ads for this diabolical ship right next to those awful reviews. Now consider that the travesty of the return trip we had to endure in order to get out of this ship. We could only get a return flight back at 5:30pm so we had a six hour wait at the airport and a five hour return flight. I will NEVER AGAIN set foot on a Norwegian ship. Read Less

This was my 10th cruise, but my first with Norwegian and my first bad experience. Breakfast and dinner in the main dining room took 2-2 1/2 hours every day. Items would arrive cold or sometimes not at all. The food was only so-so. Every dinner had broccoli. Ala mode meant a little dollop of whipped cream and the chocolate lava cake was nowhere as good as Carnival's. We never saw our cabin steward until the last night when he came around looking for a tip. We couldn't get in touch with him because he said his phone was broken and they weren't giving him another one. He never brought us ice. We had one tiny night table and a very small desk. No other hard surfaces except a few small triangle shelves sticking out of the cabinet that held the TV and refrigerator. There was rust in the bathroom. The entertainment was good, but I've seen better. The daily newsletter did not give any details about disembarkation, and two of the ports were tethers. We had to go up to the pool deck to get tether numbers the morning of the disembarkations. You had to make reservations for the dining rooms and I kept getting different information each time I called. First they said you had to go either 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, etc., instead of 6:00 like we wanted. They told me there were no more reservations available at 6:30 and that we had to go at 8:30. The next person told me 9:00, even though I was previously told reservations were only on the half hour. There were six of us and they next said that only 4 of us could go at 6:30 in one dining room and the other 2 had to go to another dining room. I finally went to the reservations desk and saw the reservations board and they had plenty of availability in all the time slots, including 6:00, in both dining rooms. I was finally able to reserve 6:00 for the six of us in the same dining room for the entire cruise, which, by the way was the 7-day Western Caribbean and not the 14-day like the heading says. Needless to say, none of us will be going on Norwegian again. Read Less

We just got back from sailing on the Spirit. We left out of Port Canaveral, however I felt that this was port was not organized. casino was a little small but the ventilation system was horrible. I am not a smoker and normally I would not complain about it but it was Horrible. The ship was nice looking but you could see that it is in need of major updating. we had room 11037 and 11051. They were descent sized rooms but they had a foul smell from the bathrooms. Trick is to keep the shower door closed as the smells were coming up from the drain. The food was not as good as any of the other ships I have been on from NCL. We did Specialty Restaurants, Teppanyaki was sooooo good, LeBistro and LaTratoria was good and believe it or not Cagneys was not our favorite which it usually is. The crew seemed confused and not pleasant. we did enjoy all of the games and the entertainment. There was an airreal act that was phenomenol, a must see. Probably my most favorite show out of all the cruises I have been on. Read Less

To start this review on a good note our safe was broken and I had medication inside of it and they did keep their word on making sure that a new one was in place and working by my next dose of medication. Ok we were treated poorly on this cruise. A waitress did not want to wait on our table and I asked the waiter if she is the one who did not want to wait on us or was it something else. He was so rude and abruptly said nope she didn't want to take our order. Then the next morning this same waiter working at another restaurant completely avoided giving us any pastry and when our waiter said that he missed us he used terrible body gestures and rolled his eyes. He came over to me and then to my 79 year old mother and just gave her one and did not let her choose one for herself. And I complained and never received an apology. The food was poor not much variety at the of the week you are completely sick of it. They should cut people off when they see they have been drinking too much. They lead you to think that they are going to build up a big jackpot that someone will win in bingo on the last day of the cruise and then they pull a if the game is not won by 47 numbers that the jackpot is kept by the ship. Making everyone spend more and more money on these bingo cards and find out at the end it is just a big rip off. Don't buy anything at their 10 dollar sales they all are cheap and fall apart or watches don't work. The one who took care of my cabin was absolutely fabulous.Royal Carribean is the best for top notch service and excellent cruising experience. Read Less

Service in dining room was extremely slow. Refused to go to the specialty restaurants and pay extra money. I think that's what they want. Had planned to have breakfast in the cabin, but they started charging $7.95 for room service. The only 110 volt outlet had a label saying 'No hairdryers." I use a diffuser and the hairdryer in the bathroom was way too strong and hot. The unlimited data plan was a plus, especially since their wifi is so slow. Also enjoyed the unlimited beverage plan that came free with the week. Was not a happy cruiser overall. Read Less

This was our first & probably last experience in sailing with NCL. This was our 6th cruise & can honestly tell you NCL is the worst operation in cruise history. The Spirit is the worst ship we have ever been on. In fact the name should be changed to The Sewage. This ship was the most unsanitary ship we have ever been on. OK here we go with facts: 1. Our stateroom #5576 was midship & all week long midship on deck 5 it smelled like a raw sewage plant. Other guests complained & I filled out sheets with of course received no answer from the hotel manager. We went to meet the Captain, Hotel Manager & some other high level officer’s presentation & when they were called out about the sewage smell on deck 5 they tried to to tell everyone they were unaware of the problem. Then another person stated incorrect because we spoke to you the other day about the sewage smell. Then the management team back pedals & said we will address your concern later which never happened. Again caught in a lie we had friends aboard that they tried to comp with a dinner in a speciality restaurant bc of this awful odor. How would you like to have to sleep in a room that smelled like raw sewage every night? 2. While on the subject the ship was grungy, dirty & sticky. We never once witnessed staff cleaning the elevator mirrors or railings on the steps. 3. Day 5 & 6 by the Blue lagoon restaurant the maintenance workers repairing a rest room caused deck 7 aft all the way to 10 to smell like pure urine. Disgusting. People were holding there noses for two days in this area. Right by a restaurant how appetizing. 4. The lunch & evening buffet was far below par. Much of the food didn’t even have a decent appearance. Worst buffet I have ever seen on a cruise ship. 5. The main dining room to be seated was totally unorganized where even with reservations you waited 30 minutes to be seated then service was unbelievably slow. Finally after 3 days of waiting in line with a 6 PM reservation a staff person told us they opened the other door for reservations. 6. We waited 35 minutes for lunch on boarding day where we received a cold burger & fries. On Wednesday we went to the Shogun restaurant & ordered 1 hour later still no food so we left along with two other couples who did not receive their ordered meals too. Nice touch!!! 7. Maintenance was doing painting in dining areas during the cruise. Maintenance closed part of the deck 7’s walking track while at sea to power wash the deck. Should of been done when we were in port. 8. Customer Service of the entire staff was real poor. It was apparent most of the workers could give a darn about their job and serving the passengers. In fact we asked two different workers what the problem was as they did not look happy & there reply was they have not been paid in two cruises so evidently NCL has a cash flow problem. This goes for the bartenders, house keeping & customer service area poor service unhappy workers. The entire time on this ship sitting mostly in the rear eating area we were only ever asked once if we would like a drink. Most of the bartenders were rude. 9. Our best excursion was cancelled power boat/snorkle in St Thomas but we were not given 48 hours notice of the cancellation. All the good tours were sold out by the time of this notification. What else could go wrong!!! 10. There is not enough seating in the main pool area. If you were not out there by 9 or 9:30 forget about it people had reserved all the tables & chairs so you sat out back or down on deck 7 away from the entertainment. Nice!!! 11. Smoking way to many places where smoking was permitted. 1/2 of deck 12 was for smokers. Can you believe they had a smoking area set up by the jogging track. Smoking should be totally limited to 1 or 2 areas. As on most ships the casino wreaked of smoke there-fore we can not patronage gambling as my health is more important than inhaling second hand smoke. ONLY ONE GOOD POINT - the shows & entertainers were awesome but this is true of just about every ship I have been on however there was no comedy club. I went on vacation to relax & have fun. This ship was no fun at all but one dirty, filthy floating sewer plant. My wife & I are not complainers & loved our cruise in Feb. on Carnival & other cruises we have been on with RC. We were sad to get off the ship in Feb 2015 the Carnival Sunshine but we could not wait to get off The Spirit the worst ship ever. Read Less

My family and I love to go on a cruise for Thanksgiving. It gives us quality time together; allows the adults an opportunity to relax and unwind; and usually offers a wonderful dining experience for my eating restrictions (gluten intolerant). However, that was not the case on this cruise. First off, the crew was way understaffed. We had heard through other guests that a good portion of the crew had to remain in Europe because they did not have the appropriate documentation. It was also said that this ship had not crossed the Atlantic since 2010. This was evident in that the gift shop was geared for a European audience when you had several items that said Europe all over them. This cruise didn't even go to Europe. Plus, they only had Eurpean shirts to sell when it was a Caribbean cruise. The staff stated that they didn't get the supplies requested and they were doing the best they could. The seas were extremely rough and forced a lot of activities, especially outdoor activities, to be cancelled. I can not blame Norwegian for the weather. It just added on to the poor experience. My family had motion sickness so bad that we didn't get rid of it completely until 3 days after the cruise was over, and I never get sea sick! The dining experience was the worst. I am gluten intolerant, and normally have no problem. However, on this ship you have to track down one particular person to order all your meals preferably 24 hours in advance, and give them the location and time you will be there. This is NOT freestyle cruising. Plus, if you have questions about a food in the buffet line, they will not answer and tell you to talk to your special diet coordinator. When my family and I ate in the complementary dining rooms, the food was aweful and the wait was at least an hour after you were seated at the table. The experience was so bad that my family refused to eat dinner with me in the "Windows" the last night of the cruise. Their rationale was that if the food wasn't that good, they certainly weren't going to wait forever for it. They ate in the food court, where the chefs won't answer questions. There were several other things that went wrong, but all in all it was the worst vacation I ever had, and I don't care to ever cruise with Norwegian again. Read Less

This first time I have reviewed a cruise. That's how disappointing this cruise was. Without reservation, the worst cruise ever. Have cruised 24 times, 5 with NCL. Food in all venues, especially the buffet not good. Always cold and limited choices. Food items were frequently not replenished unless you tracked down a dining room staff member Not much better in specialty restaurant. With a few exceptions, entertainment terrible. Lounge group "Flyer" were excellent as were juggler and comedian. All production shows were not worth seeing. Cabin still has TV the same size as my first TV in 1955. Constant interference from other channels. Bar soap and lotions not provided unless you went to guest services and made a special request. For a small ship, tender operations were a mess. Staff was ill trained and ill prepared to handle tender operations. Passengers became hostile while waiting to access tenders. If you plan on a quiet location out of the sun, stay in your cabin. No outdoor seating area provided to meet both requirements. This ship is a perfect candidate for salvage. NCL private island Stirrup Cay excellent snorkeling Read Less

We are a local Florida couple. I am 47 DH is 52- we have taken a total of 5 cruises 3 on Carnival, 1 on Royal Caribbean and this one on Norwegian Sun. Since we live close by we do not have a hotel review to add. We arrived at the Port at 12:15 for boarding. We always book Mini-suite or higher rooms and on Carnival and RC this has always included VIP boarding. Not so at all with Norwegian- we waited in lines for over two and a half hours! Totally unacceptable! Once on board we located our mini-suite stateroom- room was very nice- aft facing balcony- largest balcony we have ever had. However when I unpacked and went to push my suitcase under the bed I found a used toothpick on the floor and later a used tissue under the couch. Gross! Room steward was seen once throughout the whole three days- bed was made so know he had come around- but never introduced himself or checked to see if there was anything that we needed. Dining: Worst food I have ever had on a cruise- basically if you wanted anything that resembled food you had to pay the upcharge and go to the specialty restaurants. We attempted to eat in the main dining room one night- my medium steak was first served bloody rare- returned it- 2nd attempt was same doneness and tough as leather- 3rd attempt finally was cooked correctly but could not even be chewed. My dinner that night consisted of 3 small potato wedges- by then my husband had finished his dinner and I was too aggravated to wait on another dish. The two specialty restaurants we did dine in were very good. However we feel that it is unnaceptable that we had to pay a fee in order to get anything acceptable to eat.Shore Excursions: Nassau: We did the Seahorse Sail and Snorkle excursion. Water was a bit choppy but were able to see lots of fish-water clarity was good. Crew was friendly and there was unlimited rum punch on the return trip. Very nice! Due to high winds our private island excursion was cancelled- We can not blame Norwegian for this however it seemed that they had no contigency plan. An announcement was made that there would be an updated newspaper available in a short time at the service desk for day at sea activities- the only thing added was a staff show. Basically nothing to do all day long except go to the pool- very, very windy or spend money in the shops. However later that night there were so many people trying to view the comedy show that there was no seating and people were double stacked in the aisles- really think this could have been avoided had they added an afternoon show. Would have given people more options for entertainment. On the subject of announcements- you can not hear them in your stateroom. Some may say this is a good thing- but we didnt think so. When and if announcements were made- and they were not made for debarking in Nassau or when we arrived back in Port Canaveral until long after the process had already started. Entertainment was sparse and reminded me of a high school try at a production than any other cruise type entertainment we have seen on other ships. Debarkation: This is the first ship we have been on that you had to personally go to the service desk to get luggage tags- they were not delivered to the room. We arived in PC at around 7am -scheduled debarkation was for 8:30am. We were not able to leave the ship till around 9:30 due to "waiting on customs clearance" All in all we will never utilize Norwegian again. This is one couple that will gladly return to Carnival or Royal Caribbean for all future cruises. Read Less

Just had to vent on the absolutely horrible experiences I just had on the Norwegian Sun. I booked myself and 17 friends in 5 cabins for a "girls getaway cruise". This was my 15th cruise but first with Norwegian. You know what they say, "you never get a second chance to make a first impression." I'm going to have a VERY hard time recommending or booking my clients on Norwegian from now on, will definitely NOT book anyone on the SUN again. The service from the people working on this ship is BEYOND unbelieveably BAD!! The cruise started bad and got progressively worse over the three days on the ship. Starting with the 2 hour check in process. We arrived at the port just before 1:00 p.m. we were herded into a waiting area with rows of chairs and asked to sit there and wait, they were taking people to check in by the rows. Finally after about 45 -50 minutes our row was called and I thought great we will all be checking in now, NO, we were just called to go stand in another line which we stood in for another hour and fifteen minutes. We finally get on the ship at a little after 3:00 p.m. we ran to our cabins put our stuff down and ran to make the mandatory muster drill at 3:30. We are all starving after the long wait to check in and the muster drill but OH there is NO FOOD! If you want food you have to call ROOM SERVICE and pay a room service delivery fee or wait until the sail away deck party at 4:30 to eat. Later that night, one of my friends in another cabin came to me and said that their sheets were filthy, there were stains and hairs on them, the shower curtain was moldy and mildewy (the curtain in our cabin was the same way) and that they went to climb into the pull out sofa bed and the whole thing collapsed on them. We both had balcony cabins directly in the front of the ship cabins 1002 & 1202. The hotel director gave them a different room to sleep in that night, someone eventually came to change the sheets on the bed but never changed the shower curtain. The next morning we wake up to notice that the uncomfortable sofa bed that my two friends were sleeping on in our cabin had the sheets pulling off the mattress to show the MOST disgusting, stained, ripped mattress I have ever seen, I don't think I would've let my dog sleep on this thing, seriously I would expect to find a mattress like that in a nasty - crack, pay by the hour motel in a seedy part of town, my friends were appalled that they were sleeping on that thing all night. We told the room steward about it and also complained that when I originally thought about making the reservations on this ship we were told that there would be 4 SEPARATE beds for us as we are all just friends and didn't want to share beds. The sofa sleeps 2 together. They did bring us a new mattress that night and it was better but I could tell the staff had an attitude like they didn't really want to help us but they HAD to. During that day one of my friends in the other cabin said she had asked at the Guest Services desk about a $35 shipboard credit we were all supposed to receive from NCL because when we booked in February they were running a special with reduced deposits, shipboard credits and a coupon book. The guest services person told her there were no credits and "could she prove" she was supposed to have one. So, I go and spend about an hour and a half at the internet lounge, at .75 a minute, searching back through my e-mails to February, printed out the flyer I received for the promotion which had a booking code of PGWAVE11 and printed out all of the reservation confirmations proving that I booked under that promo code and booked during the 3 days of the sale. I take everything down to the guest services to "PROVE" that we were supposed to get the credits a rude Russian woman takes the documents and fills out some paperwork, says they will "research" it and to check back tomorrow night (last night of the cruise). I even explained to this woman that I am a travel agent, I showed her my IATA card and she really didn't give a flying ****. That evening we ate at the "pay an extra $25 per person steakhouse" where we sat for 20 minutes before anyone even came over to take our drink order and bring some bread. The waiter acted like we were totally inconveniencing him by being there, he was rude, rolled his eyes at us when we made a request for something that wasn't on the menu. Really unbelievable, we're paying an extra $25 for THIS! The steak was pretty average about what you would find at a halfway decent steak restaurant, NOT worth the extra $25 and the rude waiter whose name was Nelson. The waiters we had at sit down breakfast and at the non-pay extra restaurants were mostly all rude too. The one morning at breakfast our waiter just kept telling us "it's so busy, we are very busy" about every three minutes, I guess this justified that fact that it took so long to even get a glass of orange juice. The next evening (thankfully the last night of the cruise) I went down to guest services to check on those shipboard credits again and was told by yet another rude, nasty Russian woman, that when I originally made the 5 separate reservations that someones credit card had been declined and that none of the cabins would receive the shipboard credit because they were all under the same reservation number and that I would have to call NCL. WHAT!! Get the manager Odile, out there he says the same thing. OK, UM, if a credit card was declined the reservation would be cancelled if a different card wasn't used, we were all on the ship, we all paid. ALL of the reservations had individual reservation numbers. OH my blood is boiling again just writing this. So, moving on, my friend in another cabin had pre-paid her gratuities about 3 weeks before the cruise, she had come to me a little while before saying they didn't have any record of her pre-payment and that even if she presented a receipt they would still have to charge her for the gratuities AGAIN!!! You have got to be kidding me! So, I have another go round with nasty Russian woman again demanding that she remove the gratuities from my friends cabin that she had pre-paid and there was no excuse for the rudeness and nastiness of the staff. I wasn't about to let her pay again figuring if she did there was no way she was ever going to get her money back after we left the ship. They finally removed them after much more rudeness. Saturday morning, I go down with another friend to guest services to pay cash for my onboard expenses, waited in line for 45 minutes go to the desk pay my bill but when my friend asked for a final receipt for her expenses she noticed that the $60 cash she had paid the night before to the guest services desk was not applied to her account. SHE WAS LIVID, they told her we have no record of it, she had a receipt back in the cabin but it was time to leave and she didn't want to wait in line another 45 minutes, she argued with them about it for a while and they finally agreed to take it off. I have a feeling though that she's going to be fighting with her credit card company. There were plenty of other irate guests at the guest services desk that morning complaining about everything. I told the hotel director that I have had better service at McDonald's from teenagers than I have from the people on this ship, they just laughed. No apologies, no comment cards to fill out, just a completely "we don't give a **** attitude". I told the director I would never book anyone on that ship again, he just shrugged. Lastly, on the shuttle bus someone, not affiliated with my group, just happened to ask if anyone would sail on that ship or Norwegian again, ALL 30 people said a resounding NO!!! These people had a myriad of problems just like we did, terrible service, dirty rooms, one couple said the bathroom hadn't been cleaned at all when they got into their room, toothpaste in the sink, wet dirty towels on the floor, etc... So, if you have clients that don't care about good service or that they might be overcharged for things and don't mind living in filth then by all means book them on the Norwegian Sun otherwise, avoid it like the plague! I have never been happy to get off a cruise before, but I couldn't get off this one fast enough, never again. Plus, NCL made me look really bad in front of my friends/clients by not giving the shipboard credit that I had told them they would receive from NCL. Read Less

One of the crew members even came into our room at an inappropriate time without even knocking, and NEVER apologized she just wanted know if we needed anything !! I was so embarrassed and shocked !! There was a terrible sewer smell outside our room in the hall way. However the room was Gross!! Empty Pepsi can & found dirty tissue in my room. When I watched the show on Under Cover Boss I was so impressed ~ I have to tell ya ~ NCL Sun vessel was NOTHING like the ship you were on. I STRONGLY suggest you go undercover on the NCL Sun and just see for yourself what a terrible experience this is & and you eat the gross food that is served and let everyone know how you liked it ????... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Took us forever to be able to get on the ship the first day & then they even left port late. Our Friday excursion off the boat on the private island was cancelled due to the weather and we were suppose to be able to leave the ship earlier on Saturday at 6:00 A.M. and WAS STILL DELAYED UNTIL ALMOST 9:30 A.M. MAJORITY OF THE CREW MEMBERS WERE VERY RUDE. Only one young lady was very kind and one gentleman, the rest of the crew could not even understand what the hell they were saying. SOMETHING DEFINATELY NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!! The cruise started bad and got progressively worse over the three days on the ship. Starting with the check in process. The Norwegian Sun was booked my a former friend's (travel agent) friend, and therefore I trusted that the ship would be decent and we would be in good hands. Well, not exactly. For this "girls cruise from hell," we waited in line approximately 2 hours to check in, and I knew right then and there the next few days were going to be a nightmare. My girlfriend and I were joking that we wanted to jump ship right as it was sailing away, and do I ever wish that we had. After just boarding the ship, we are all starving from waiting in line for 2 hours, so we sit down to eat. After 15 minutes we are told we need to get up and do the mandatory fire drill. Really? We just sat down to eat. After checking in, our room was filthy. There were hairs in the bed and stains on the white sheets. Our shower was moldy, and an hour later our pull out bed collapses. No, I am not joking. We went to speak with management about it and they didn't know what to do. We waited in our pajamas at midnight waiting for a room until 1 am. You get the picture. The food was "Golden Corral" buffet- styled, and you could not get a decent meal unless you paid for it at the expensive upscale restaurants. There were a couple of good fine dining establishments, and they were the only decent meals I had in 4 days of sailing. I actually lost weight on this cruise. Most of us were initially sick on the ship, and I later realized it was because the ship turned off the stabilizers to save money. Not exactly the way to treat paying customers. By the time we were to depart the ship, we were all herded like cattle into an area to wait yet again, and many passengers are yelling at management~ it was complete chaos. I also later found out that the staff was in training and likely didn't know what to do. We kept commenting how rude the staff was and overall so disorganized, but now looking back it makes sense. This was my first and last cruise with NCL. I was ready to relax and let a week of life float by with good food, fun and rest. While on the NCL Sun, I found none of that.Positives: The service by NCL agents at Port Canaveral were fun, helpful and very professional. The ship is beautiful--was redone not too long ago. Although it is laid out with a lot of up and downs from floor to floor to reach common areas, once you got the hang of it, it was easy to navigate. We were given the option of what time we wanted to disembark at the end of the cruise and I liked that a lot. Leaving the ship and port was very smooth and quick. The ports we visited were very nice (more information about that later). The bar staff was always cordial and did not make us wait when asking for soft drinks when more lucrative drinks patrons were there to be served as well. There was always someone at dining areas ready to spray your hands with hand sanitizer before entering and they were always nice. We found our room to be satisfactory with plenty of storage space to put our items away. There was a refrigerator in our room but was jammed packed with drinks and goodies (for a price) with no room for us to chill our water we had brought.Cabin: As I said above, the cabin was nice. If you like hard beds, you will be in heaven. I do, so I was happy. Our steward was very impatient and would give us our ice in the middle of the day, and our towel animal which on other cruise lines is reserved for turn-down. We only received turn down one night. My friend liked to sleep and he was always complaining they he was suppose to leave. One day I just told him to forget it and I gave him our dirty towels to exchange. Like another poster, our steward would just pop in and when I told him to leave whatever he had in his hand on the floor, he came completely in and was looking around to see where everyone was. I got a creepy feeling about this. He did it a few times. The bathroom was small. BRING YOUR OWN HAIRDRYER! The hairdyer looks like a vacuum cleaner and is not very strong. Also, the tube gets hot and you can't stand to hold it long at all. I like the indented spaces a long each side of the mirror with metal guards to hold your peronal items. Shower is round and small. Toilet is very uncomfortable to sit on but the seats in the bathrooms around the ship are fine. One night I went to order room service and our steward had taken everything out of our ship information book. I did get a menu from a steward to order from. IT was very strange. Pool Area: Very nice with 4 hottubs and two pools. There was another pool we heard near the front of the ship but never found it. The children's pool has steps and the adult pool had ladders. Adults often went into the children's pool. There weren't many children on this cruise compared to other lines I have been on. Although the pools and hot tubs are open until 10:30, the crew start stacking chaise lounges and chairs around 6. I had read that before I went on the cruise but really didn't believe it--but it is true. By 7, the deck is cleared and the pools are corded off and the hottubs netted. One time, I saw a guest get a chaise lounge off the stack and put it down to lay on, and the crew member took it away from her and put it up. The pool deck was packed with people. I thought I would do the same thing until I saw that so my friend and I kept walking and went back to the room. Entertainment: The entertainment we saw was very good. They had a group-DEL SOL -that entertained in Dazzles and on the pool deck and they were terrific. Elvy was very good and funny. We loved the Liar's Club show. The performers for NCL were also good. I missed the comedian and magician but heard they were good.General: The doors and hallways were very narrow. Photos prices were high and the characters you posed with were very seedy looking. We attended a scrapbooking class one afternoon. The girl didn't know anything about scrapbooking except 1-2 facts. She showed us what the ship had to sell, gave us a 4x6 of the ship and our cruise course and that was it. Everyone was disappointed. Most of us were experienced scrappers and thought we would be able to make a page (as we had done on other cruise lines. We spent some time helping a few newbies with information. Very lame.Food: The biggest disappointment of all. The Garden Cafe is very poorly laid out and congested with long lines. Although they have crew making paninis, to order pastas, stir-fry, ice cream and crepes, and paninis, you can never get any unless you are willing to wait in a long line for a long time. Salad bar was set up backwards so you always got your lettuce last. Cesar salad served all the time and was good. Very heavy Indian influence and uncommon dishes like puried spinach with potato chunks in it looked absolutely revolting. Presentation of the food was lacking as well as icing and cleanliness. No straws available. Drinks limited to milk, water and tea. Every time they refilled the tea dispenser, it would be under a new button so you got water sometimes, tea the next when you wanted water. Crew very rude. Glasses were 8 oz so you were always running to refill. I was very disappointed in the food--as were many others. I have never seen so many people eat salad and hamburgers so much in my life. The pizza wasn't good either. We ate in the Four Seasons and our waiter wanted us to hurry up and order. The food was OK, not good or great. We then went to the Seven Seas. Food was a little better as well service but felt we were an inconvenience to the servers. I am easy to please but found most food not worth eating. The steak and fries was tasty. Fries were served day and night---never had a baked potato. Never asked for seconds. Other posters said portions were small--very true. Appetizers were good, especially the portabella mushroom with goat cheese. When you ordered several, the server would give you a disapproving look. Just not fun or satisfying. We never did eat at one of the 7 fee based restaurants. I figured if they couldn't get the free food to be good, why should I pay for the same or just a bit better. Did not go to the chocolate buffet for same reason. In fact, when the servers were advertising it, not many patrons seemed interested. We just figured it was a waste of time when the desserts served in the restaurant were not worth eating. Like us, all of the folks we saw ordered ice cream for dessert. We never heard anyone bragging about the chocolate buffet the next day, so we figured we were right. We ordered room service one night. It didn't take that long but we didn't get what was listed on the menu either. As described in the menu, there was no pickle, no slaw with the sandwiches. The hotdog didn't have the carrot sticks or mustard. The bread was old so I ate the hot dog plain with no bun or condiment. Seven days with 3 sea days is a long time to be on a ship with average to below average food.Ports: We didn't get off the ship at our first stop in the Bahamas. We have visited the Bahamas many times before and since it was our real first day on the cruise, we decided to chill out and rest.St Thomas: We took a taxi to Magen's Bay. Their taxis consist of a pick up truck with open air seating benches in the back. That was fine, but the roads are very winding and narrow. So we got a roller coaster ride to the beach. Magen's Bay charges $4 entrance fee. Has covered picnic area and then some picnic tables. No chaise lounges or umbrellas to rent. IT was crowded but very beautiful. The ship was docked. Glad we did shopping before our beach trip. St Martens: Arranged our own tour with Bernard's tour on the internet. IT was great. The "MAILMAN" was our guide and just a fun informative and caring guide. He had cold sodas, water, rum punch for us all day. The van was air-conditioned. He used a microphone to narrate the trip. We went completely around the island from one country to the next and back again. We stopped for some photos, and then for two hours at Orient Beach. We rented two chairs and umbrellas with a rum drink for $15. Orient Beach is an experience to say the least. The water was beautiful and we had a good time. He made a stop for a man to take creatures from the water and tell us about them. Then we made a quick stop at Maho beach and the airport to experience the planes as they land. Wish we could have stayed longer, but had to leave. The mailman had word there was a wreck which backed up traffic and he wanted to make sure we got back to the boat. WE did and had a wonderful day. I highly recommend Bernard's Tours. Several people from our ship were on the tour and had a great time. The ship was docked a long with 5 other ships that day. All in all, we had a good time, but not a super time as we have in Spring breaks past on other lines. I was not impressed at all with NCL. In fact, it was very underwhelmed and glad to get off the ship. Carnival, RCI and NCL are all about the same price but there is a huge difference in the experience. Have a good time--don't go on NCL. Myself along with my fiance sailed on the Sun 1/29/2011...I have to say it is the worse NCL cruise I have ever taken. We booked this cruise back in 2009 and it wasn't promoted as an "oldies cruise" we found out about 6 months prior to sail..and by than it was too late to change (airfare purchased, time scheduled off from work) We booked directly through NCL and never and I mean never was told it was an "oldies cruise". We got an upsell call a week before we sailed to go from a balcony cabin to a mini-suite..of course we took it...(big mistake) ever and I mean ever oldies concerts were held in the Observation Lounge which was right about us....we complained we did manage to get our money back...but we got very little sleep. A few more things that made this sooo bad..... 1. The ship just came out of drydock...but it wasn't ready to sail..they were sanding the pool deck area 3 days..(nice noise and very little space around the pool!) 2. The buffet area was very crowded. The food was never hot, very little taste! 3. The man's room out side of the casino was out of order the entire cruise. 4. Bar service in the main dining room was very slow or not at all. 5. Dinners were very rushed in the main dining room...very poor menu selections. 6. No perks for mini-suites. Like I said, this was by far the worse NCL cruise we have been on in a long time!! Read Less

The NCL freestyle motto was put into full motion when the clutch had problems on the starboard engine. NCL rerouted the ships ports of call and sent many unhappy passengers into the Atrium for a shouting match that lasted for many hours, definitely a freestyle moment not printed on the days itinerary. The real winner was NCL profits. With less money spent on fuel and port charges passengers were given very little to compensate them for a mechanical error. That being said, the food was not that great either. We dined in the restaurants that charge you a cover charge only to find surly matur'dees, bad waitresses and food worse than you would find in the main dining room. The kids program was great and our son loved every minute, except the head kids counselor had a bad cold and we were sent home with a parting gift. Now our son knows first hand what air sick bags are used for, so does my wife. Some of the crew members were terrific people working very hard to make the best experience for the passengers, but NCL's private island with half price snorkel gear could not get me back on another NCL boat. I bet I'm not alone. If you want bad food, $5.00 beers, only left handed clubs at the golf net and some jerk insulting you because your 10 minutes late on your dinner reservation this is the cruise ship for you. This was the Norwegian Sun's first cruise from Port Canaveral. The way the ship was managed at each port of call made it seem like it was their first cruise anywhere. We were late getting to and leaving every port. Freestyle cruising was more like their style cruising. We were over 2 hours late departing, the first port of call went relatively smoothly. We were surprised to find approximately 1/4 of the passengers were gay men(most of whom were fine and fun) but found ourselves constantly running into inappropriately clad men throughout the ship in the evening. Granted they hosted private parties and closed off parts of the ship, but that made those parts of the ship unavailable to other passengers and they had to get to and from their parties. This was not a great family atmosphere and I felt bad for folks with small children, honeymooners, etc. Second port of call, Guatemala there were many problems with excursions, St Tomas DE Castillo itself is not a destination I'll return to, and they didn't really appear to understand how to handle a cruise ship. Trouble with ports really began at Belize where we had to stand in line at 07:00 in the morning for boarding passes for tenders. We were told 7, but they didn't begin until 7:30. Tender boarding was delayed approximately and hour and half causing us to miss our first excursion, narrowly allowing us to make our second excursion. At Key West we lost an hour of sleep due to time zone change and were initially notified we had to see immigration at 07:20 which was then revised to 06:20. Soooo, we got up and went to see immigration on very little sleep. It turned out the ship was late and we stood in line for an hour and a half in a line as long as the ship. At one point a passenger yelled will you cruise Norwegian again and a good percentage of the line yelled back "no!" Eventually we were allowed to debark, but a short stop in Key West was even shorter. The ships crew did not appear to understand how long it took to do anything at port, we were always later than they said we would be. The ship was dirty, and slightly run down, the food was average and the first night at sea dining room staff were confused. Highlights of the cruise included the stop at Belize, and while most of the hotel staff were good, a few were excellent. I guess I could have shortened this up, this was the worst cruise I've ever been on and I'll be thinking long and hard before I book another with NCL. Read Less
