Panama Canal and south America
"Two days in Lima was also very good although it was strange how getting off the ship required a 20 minute shuttle ride to a plaza further away from the main city than where the ship was docked - but ubers were cheap so it was only the time factor that was a bit annoying.* South American ports aren't as busy with other cruise traffic, but that can also mean that there is less organised activity you can book on-shore * Uber was a relatively cheap and practical way to get around, and took the guesswork out of negotiating fares with taxi drivers or other private operators * Mobile coverage and data was sometimes a bit patchy on-shore - weirdly it was places like Santiago and Lima where it was less reliable * NCL didn't seem to care too much about the on-shore experience for those not on one of their official excursions - and there weren't even many of those that you could book * The Sun is showing its age and I wonder just how many more years she's got in the fleet...."Read More

Review for a South America Cruise on Norwegian Sun

I’ve cruised with NCL several times in the past, most often with Celebrity so I have some recent experience to base my review. Overall, Cebebrity outperforms NCL. The cruise was good overall but a few details left us disappointed. Most foremost was the food. It just fell flat, both in the dining room and buffet. Normally we don’t choose premium dining because we are fairly satisfied with the ...

This was the second time we'd sailed on the Norwegian Sun but we enjoyed the first time more and noticed some subtle changes which had made the cruise more expensive. We like the ship because it is smaller with 2,000 guests. The State Rooms, the Dining, the Bars and the Entertainment were all excellent. The Service in some departments however left plenty of room to improve particularly around ...

We chose this cruise because of the canal transit and the South American itinerary. A week or so out there was a change to the itinerary, dropping the first stop in Colombia (Santa Marta), changing Panama City to Colón, and adding an extra day in Lima. I haven't seen an explanation for the change, and while the extra day in Lima instead of Santa Marta was a decent trade, Colón for Panama City ...

A SHIP TO AVOID

The crew were excellent. Most of the entertainment in the theatre were your dancers and singers Most cruise lines are reducing the levels of service and amenities provided. NCL has taken this to the extreme. There are no toiletries; no bath gowns; no chocolate on the pillow at turn-down. In fact they have no turn-down service at all. Dirty towels remain on the floor until the next day (often the ...

This was a 18 night South America Cruise from Santiago Chile to Miami, FL. We choose this cruise based on the itinerary. The ship is old...built in 2001 and refurbished in 2018. Our Cabin was a Vista View Junior Suite on Deck #10 (0067)...on the very back of the ship. The size of the balcony was average. This balcony provided an excellent view for the Panama Canal crowding. The Junior Suite ...

We chose this cruise to see some of South America and cruise through the Panama Canal. We have traveled on the Norwegian Sun previously and had a good experience. The ship was upgraded last year and looks good. The staterooms are now elegant and other areas of the ship nice. This was a repositioning cruise, so there were seven sea days, which was a bit much for us, as we don't participate in ...

I have benefited immensely by the reviews posted on Cruise Critic, but have never taken the time to write one myself. For many years, the message boards have proved invaluable for planning our excursions. I can’t thank Cruise Critic enough. It is my hope that readers will find this helpful. Warning- very detailed. We booked balcony cabin #8221. I appreciate the connections on the CC message ...

This is our first NCL cruise. We traveled with 2 other couples and this is our first time visiting S. America. Even though it is a small cruise ship, the cabins are much more spacious than the other bigger cruise ships we have sailed before. Entertainment is pretty good overall. We find the excursions over priced (e.g. charging us$300 for a 3 hr. trip to see penguins) and did our own thing for ...

Disappointed

This was my first time cruising with this cruise line and I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed with the services provided compared to other cruise lines that I have travelled with. This is a small, older ship with only 12 floors; however it was recently refurbished. I found the cafeteria dining on the 11th floor always congested. You are constantly bumping into other people. The ...

We chose this Cruise because of the wide variety of islands we were visiting. This Cruise was an older crowd not very Lively so I think bedtime was roughly around 9 p.m. . All the specialty restaurants were very good and the food was excellent service was great but when it came to the main restaurants the seven seas and the Four Seasons ran the same menu every night. With four or five specials ...
