We chose this cruise as a family cruise. My self, wife , son, 2 grandkids and my 92 tear old mother. Cabin: Our cabin was 9545 and is the worst cabin by far that I have had on any cruise. Your could here the toilet flush in the rooms around us. I don't know if there was a crew walk way, the other side of the wall at the back of the stateroom, Often through out the night we would get a loud rumbling sound that sounded like a loud clap of thunder. The hose to our shower was leaking where it was connected to the shower head. Cabin steward was notified the second day of the cruise. It was still leaking at the end of the cruise. Room was clean and made up good everyday. Dinning: Main dinning Hall: We had 2 dinner and a breakfast in the main dinning hall. The breakfast was wonderful. Eggs, waffles hash browns and corn beef hash. First dinner nothing memorable. I can't even remember what I had. The second meal I had seafood pasta. I didn't finish the dish. Chin Chin was nothing=g more than the middle of the road Chinese. I had the Orange Beef. Buffet: We had most meals their. The menu pretty much didn't change. I know the mixed berries were not fresh but frozen. I had chunks that hadn't thawed yet in my dish. I suspect that the pastries were frozen also. Over all just buffet food. I have been on 3 Royal Caribbean cruises, 2 Carnival cruises and 2 American Steamship cruises and the food by far would rank at the bottom. Crew: The crew was very friendly and extremely helpful to us. Especially my 92 year old mother. Entertainment and Activities: We did not attend the Stardust shows but the entertainment in the bars was real good. As far as activities go, I felt they were lacking on sea days compared to past cruises. Shore excursions: We went on 2 and they were both great. Juneau we went on one of the mushing trips. It was very interesting and the scenery was beautiful. Skagway we booked the railroad and gold panning excursion. It was well worth the price. Cruise was northbound July 15 Read Less

Was the first time we cruised with Norwegian and very likely the last. The cruise line policy includes many extra charges that make the value for the money poor. It starts with drinking water (!), the cruise offers for sale packages of NCL branded drinking water. If you want any other brand, you need to buy it from the bar where the price (including automatically 20% service) comes to over $6. 20% service is for handing you the bottle. Specialty restaurants are extra. Best choices for shore tours are sold at a price too high for the level of this cruise. The activities may become overcrowded in particular in shore tours. From the specialty restaurants. we preferred the steakhouse Cagney's and Chin Chin Chinese, Sushi). Chin Chin is included except sushi, Cagney's is extra with prices on a la carte menu. It is worth to purchase the specialty restaurant package that basically includes 5 meals in any specialty restaurant. Out of 8 entertainment opportunities, only 2 were of good quality, both in the last days of the cruise. There is one shore trip included in each port, however we found out that in about 50% of the ports we preferred to purchase non included shore tours which are relative expensive. If you want to enjoy, plan to spend around $2000 extra per cabin - that would include gratuities, specialty restaurants, shore tours and reasonable drinking. The unlimited drink package is about $100/pp/day, for a 14 days cruise, only this may be $2,800..... Read Less

Ecomy measure? 6 Guest services not a happy lot. Unsmiling, not friendly, officious and at times rude 7 Embarkation was a disaster. Many staff were inexperienced. If you want to relax and get away from your regular life...don't cruise Norwegian! From the moment you board the ship you are up-sold constantly. We bought the beverage package yet coffee and water were not included but a 15.00 glass of wine was. ..are you kidding me? They even had a presentation to sell you a discount for a future cruise which made you feel like you are missing out now and you don't have the best value. The service people were awesome. However our room smelled like a locker room of men and it took 4 days for the smell to dissipate. The food was not very fresh in the buffets but very good in the other restaurants. The entertainment was awesome. The most aggravating thing of all was the constant up-selling of everything. From on the boat to on the shore one big tug at getting more money out of you, very disappointing and not relaxing. Read Less

Like most people Alaska cruise is on your bucket list. We have been on 4 cruises with RC, the first 2 were good, then they got progressively worse. Good friends are NCL regulars so we went with them this time. The embarkation process was a nightmare. There were 3 ships leaving at the same time. We were herded like cattle from one waiting area to another. At check in they messed it all up, had to correct an error, never scanned my credit card, never told us about the $300 deposit. While going through security, I went through the scanner and then several people cut in front of my husband. He was next, right behind me!We finally get on the ship, try to get something to eat, waited 15-20 minutes and no one came in O'Sheehans to take out order. Our cabin steward had to be asked constantly to leave us cream for coffee and wine glasses. The best meal we had on the ship was Tapanyaki's. It was hot. The only hot meal we had, almost. The other hot meal was ChinChin but the noodles were so over cooked they tasted like paste. The second day there was a letter saying my account was frozen, I elected to pay cash? Never happened. They didn't scan my credit card at the port. So we had to go stand in line at customer service and fix it. The next day I got a text from my credit card for a $300 charge, again customer service line because no one told us this was going to happen. The customer service line was perpendicular to the desk. The line would get long and people would try to walk through the area. I suggested to several staff, turn the line parallel to the desk and people could walk past without a problem. I was told it was their policy to have it that way, dumb. The best part about the whole ship was the staff at Magnum's Champagne Bar and a couple of higher ups, Stephen Jacob, Teresa, Andrew. The buffet was always so packed, you'd get some food and walk the entire dinning area to find a seat! People would try to cut in line while waiting for an omelet. The food in Cagneys, La Cuchina, ChinChin, O'Sheehans were all disappointing. The Tsar's Palace was OK, Denny's level. The last night we ate at ChinChin and the next morning, my husband woke up at 5 am sweating, throwing up, diarrhea, and vertigo! We ended up taking him by wheel chair to the ship doctor Then taken off the ship by wheel chair! $780 later, we got to our hotel room, he slept, got some food in him and liquids and he recovered. The ship doctor wanted to call an ambulance and take him to the hospital, to avoid liability. The ports were disappointing, so commercial. Why are there so many jewelry stores every where?! My husband did a zipline in Skagway, Grizzly Falls. He liked it except they controlled the zipline. I snorkeled in Ketchikan and it was great! The whale watching in Juneau was over priced. Saw a couple whales tails. We stayed in Vancouver after the cruise and it's a beautiful city. Stayed on Robson Street at Times Square Inn and Suites. It was nice. So many restaurants in the area! There's a Safeway, liquor stores and a couple blocks to the water! Getting through customs to leave Canada, was a hassle. It's easier to come across the border from Mexico! Our next trip will be checking out the USA! Read Less

A cruise to Alaska was on our bucket list. We celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary. Scenery was FANTASTIC. Our best excursion was a catamaran to Dawes Glacier by Allen Marine - a priceless experience. The food was sub par - at best. Buffet from purgatory. One day they served MEAT LOAF at the carving station! You can't make this up. The menu was SFDD - Same Food/Different Day. The other "complementary" restaurants had the same menu items as the buffet. The "extra charge" restaurants are severely overpriced. We went once and got charged almost an arm and a leg. Watch out for the "games" they "play". Deal or No Deal is NO DEAL. Rips you off for $25 a card and all four of ours were 100% losers. Our friends 4 cards were the same - LOSERS. The Spa staff ripped us off for $1,000 in extra charges - Teeth Whitening, Introductory Acupuncture and 50 minute Hot Stone Massage. It was a 10-20-30 offer - 10% off first service, 20% off 2nd service, 30% off 3rd service. Still over $1,000! The acupuncture person told me if I came every day for the 9-day cruise I wouldn't need a knee replacement. Fairy dust right there. Read Less

We certainly enjoyed the food in 'Le Bistro'. The trivia was very good. The itenery was why we chose to take our 1st Norwegian cruise. So much for the good. We bought an outside cabin, with an unobstructed window. That window was so dirty that details we inaccessible. We asked, I begged(!), them to clean the window. They actually told me that those windows only get cleaned during drydock! Seriously? I watched the lady who relayed this to me, and even she could not believe what she was saying. Why buy an outside if you cannot use the window [and in Alaska even!]? She offered me an upscale dining as 'compensation' [we already had 4] and I offered in return to have our charges reduce to cost on Inside cabin, since THAT WAS ESSENTIALLY WHAT WE HAD!!!! Dumbest crap I ever dealt with on any ship. We have had 25+ cruises on other lines and NEVER have, or would have, been told they could not clean out window! The food in the buffet was LOW! No salmon, no steak, no shellfish of any sort. Cheap! And poorly prepared, every piece of beef or pork I had was simply tough. Incredibly, part of the problem was that meat slicers cut WITH the grain instead of ACROSS the grain. A little training needed. Food in Main dining was repetitive, but slightly better. As I said, the Bistro was very good, but the one with all that meat was giving us stuff clearly kept under a sunlamp and was dry and tough, i am sorry to say. As an aside, we both got sick with colds, very bad ones, after Russia, and we certainly do not hold Norwegian at culp for that. I will not say I will never be on Norwegian again. But it will take a truly great itenary at a great price to tempt us from other cruise lines like Princess, Holland, Celebrity, or RCC where service is SO MUCH better. Only our room steward, who did go out of his way to help, was an exception to the 'poor service' experience. I truly hope you reconsider the 'clean window' policy. Only an outside cabin has this problem, since folks with balconies can still see without going updeck. Seriously, this cannot be a rational policy in your mind. And I hope I never sail again on a ship where I cannot get my beloved smoked salmon for breakfast in the buffet. Doug Ralston Read Less

seemed a good price for what was offered, 4 of us booked together for the south east asia cruise, asking for cabins at least on the same deck as we have always had on previous events cruises with ncl, royal caribbean and p and o. well we were at the front on deck 5 and our friends were aft on deck 8. we spoke to infinity cruises who we booked through, the paperwork and organisation for infinity leaves a lot to be desired(at one time we had 2 extra people on our booking we had never heard off) they said it was the fault of ncl, ncl said it was infinity’s fault but offered to upgrade us for £700 per person(they must have thought that we would be happy to be ripped off) eventually we boarded the jewel, cafe and restaurant staff were top quality, customer services were also excellent as were the bar staff, food really good. trying to get a seat in the garden cafe at times was impossible, spent a lot of time wandering round trying to find seats. shore excursion staff had no idea about the places we were visiting, and got the feeling one of the staff was full of his own importance. communication was awful, the morning announcement over the speaker system was next to useless as you could not hear a word in the garden cafe, thought a member of staff would have told someone. the cabin was noisy, window was misted up so did not see a lot sometimes, the housekeeper i think did his own thing, 15 20 on 2 days before the room was made up, think he had difficulty getting up in the morning, was not the best housekeeper we have had by a mile. towards the end they ran out of some draught and bottled bears, and soft drinks. the organisation for the trips was chaos with everyone queuing up to wait in the theatre at once. we were told to collect our passports between 5 am and 7 am (yes 5am 7am) on the day we disembark, but then changed their minds and made it after 2pm the day we were in. altogether we have cruise 6 times with ncl, but this ship seemed dysfunctional with no coordination, will not go with ncl again, or will we book through infinity. i must say that the entertainment was first class. Last minute booking complete with drinks package for a short trip to Tasmania. No problem with the ship except the smell of smoke in some areas such as the card room and library. The problems concerned the bad attitude of the dining room waiters. Especially the females. Some were rude and kept you waiting for ages before reluctantly acknowledging your existence. Then there was the consistently cold food. It became a game to see which one of us would be the first to get a hot meal. To be fair, there were some friendly staff in a couple of the bars. The managers of the dining rooms fell over themselves to assure you that things would improve and tell you that other people were praising the staff. Little changed for the better, especially breakfast on the last day when they made it obvious that we were not welcome because they had other things to do. And don't even think of eating in O Sheehan's. The final straw was the imposition of gst charges without notice half way into the cruise. Australian customs came on board and had to have heavy talks with them about selling duty free whilst in port. They refused to issue refunds or gst advice. I have encountered these charges on any other cruise. They simply had no idea what they were doing. The financial controller refused to meet with anyone and anyone else with authority had others blocking your way to them. We will never use Norwegian again. Read Less

They said they did not know how to get our money back. Knew nothing about insurance. When we talked to agent when we booked they said medical would be covered. ??? Service in dining room was terrible. Food was mainly served cold and not seasoned. The best part of the cruise was the intertainment at the evening shows. Best I have seen. The beverage packages were very expensive. I like some wine but could not drink enough to pay for daily package and individually very expensive per glass. The staff in general were wonderful especially our room steward. With open cruising he was the only one who remembered who we were. Sorry to say my husband and I probably would not cruise on Norwegian Cruise line again. Read Less

I will start with the good, which isn't a whole lot. Good cabin steward and the ships show band was excellent. Now for the bad! Was greeted by a plumbing problem being worked on a couple of doors down from our cabin when we got on board. The toilet in our room was not working. The ship is a bit worn and in need of some tlc. Food is poor to mediocre at best. We did do one specialty restaurant which was the Teppynaki where the food was good but service was not. The sushi at Chin Chin reminds you of something you would get at a grocery store. The only meal we had at the Azul dining room was good. Rest of the meals we had are not worth mentioning. The entertainment on this ship outside of the show band was bad. The ships band performed stand alone at a couple of other venues and they were excellent. Rest of the entertainment we ended up walking out of. If you are looking for a cruise with an enclosed pool, this is not the ship for you. They heat the pools but it is so cool outside, you really can not enjoy it. As silver members of NCL's Latitudes program this cruise by far was the worse one we have ever been on. This is also our last NCL cruise. We have cruised with Princess, Celebrity and others that do a much better job for the money. Read Less

People we were traveling with already had their reservation so had no choice The ship was very clean and the service, for the most part, was excellent. Food was awful. Cold food was room temp, hot food was room temp. regardless of restaurant. Nothing outstanding. Mixed drinks varied depending upon bartender. Some good - some undrinkable. Menu only added 2 or 3 new items. Basically same entrees nightly. Cabin was mediocre at best. Kind of like a Motel 6. Relaxed and casual dress was to be expected but many of the passengers looked like what is jokingly called people of Walmart. Announcements over the PA system could not be heard due to noise and poor acoustics. Passenger safety drill was a joke. We were herded into a bar and most of us couldn't even see their life vest demonstration, not to mention we were not sent to see where our lifeboats were located. Overall quite a disappointment. Partly because of price but not significance difference. Organization of boarding procedure in Miami - extremely poor - substandard. Service and employees - very good. Excursion vere very poorly organized mainly information to participants to and how to leave ship. Returning from excursions well organized. Entertainment - shows were one of the lowest quality we experienced.. FOOD VERY POOR based on central Europe standards. Wiener schnitzel served clearly showed, that the chef did not see even picture how the wiener schnitzel looks like. French soup was served eleven times on occasion even twice - lunch and supper and it did not tasted as french onion soup. Pasta was grossly overcooked even when served in Italian Cuisine Restaurant. Great majority of the food served were of East Indian origins using strange spices and combinations. Corn sitting in the sweetened milk, roast beef served but no mashed potatoes just to name few. When I tried to mention this issue to supervisor of servers, she was more concerned about the cabin number where are staying in instead of to listen about the issue of food. I said please accept my apology to bother you. Disembarking in LA did have some shortcomings and direction to transportation using busses to an airport should be streamlined. We experienced much better environment, service and food on MSC and other smaller Greek's company - name I could not recall. Based on our experience we booked next cruise South America using different cruise line. Disappointed, that MSC does not have itinerary we like. Read Less

My partner and I are active seniors who have cruised on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Holland America, Celebrity, Costa and Dolphin about 25-30 times. This was my 2nd time on NCL, the 1st was back in the early 1980's. We chose NCL since in leaves out of NYC. We enjoy eating out in restaurants, not fast food places. Dancing to live music is one of things we look forward to on the cruises. With that background I'll give the 2 positives first. The crew in the lounges and dining rooms were super and accommodating. Our cabin attendants were very attentive and seem to be on duty all the time. The Guitar player/singer RJ Red was great (more about the abuse of his music due to placing him adjacent to the noisy Teppanyaki restaurant, later). Los Amigos were likewise providing great music (again the worse placement for them, later). That's it for the good marks. Unfortunately we didn't realize that this ship sailing was a Spring Break destination. NCL did everything possible to make sure that these students had all the alcohol they wanted. This helped to increase the noise level, which really didn't need any help. The Tsar's Palace, main dining room, has a serious problem with noise, due to the low ceiling, maybe. The Teppanyaki restaurant opens to the bar and lounge below; this allows all the cheering for the "chef's show" to bounce right down to the lounge. This was where RJ Red played. Distracting would be too easy a word to describe what was happening. Los Amigos is a 3 man combo who played great music. Sure would have been perfect for dancing, but they were not given a lounge with a dance floor. Instead they were given the best insult possible and put in the Atrium. Their stage was in front of a large t.v. screen that was showing the basketball games. Opposite them was were the photographers set up their stations to take portraits. On the one side the tables were set up for alcohol tasting events while the opposite side had tables set up for sale items from the gift shops. What a zoo. The Fyzz Lounge had a dance floor; disco lights and a DJ who had her own mind as to what she would play. The toddler's enjoyed it as they ran around the dance floor like airplanes. The Spinnaker Lounge, with a large dance floor, was used for the games such as Bingo. Entertainment shows in the Stardust theatre were good. We didn't try any of the "specialty" (extra charge) restaurants. We felt that the food served in the dining room was so mediocre that we couldn't see spending an extra $25.00 per person for possibly the same food. In no other cruise did either of us ever find it necessary to send food back because it wasn't cooked. I will say that it was taken care of immediately by the head waiter, but it shouldn't have happened, but it happened twice. No acceptable, especially for fish and chicken. I gave NCL a second try and no way would I ever go on one of their ships again. Freestyle is just another word for "pay more". For the same price we could have sailed with any other line. Read Less

Our cruise to Canada and New England aboard Norwegian Jewel was below our expectations. We had cruised on Norwegian previously to Mexico and had a good experience once we adjusted to "free-styling". We are experienced cruisers, 5 different lines over 13 cruises now. So here's the list in categories THE SHIP ITSELF1. Never, on any of our cruises, have I ever NOT been able to sit on the toilet in my stateroom. I'm 6'2" and physically could not fit (no knee room) on the toilet. Its designed at a 45 degree angle for some reason and would have been just fine mounted straight on. Otherwise, the bathroom and specifically the shower was quite spacious as stateroom bathrooms go. 2. Because of the Freestyle cruising emphasis on specialty restaurants, a high percentage of public area on the ship is dedicated to dining. When the weather got bad and the outside decks had to be avoided, the congestion in the public areas was remarkable. Don't think I ever saw a ship's library totally full before. 3. The ship allegedly, has issues with the thrust bearings on one of its azipods(propulsion system). So NCL cancelled the stop at Corner Brook Newfoundland, very disappointing, but to make it up those already booked, every stateroom got $100 on-board credit. So hey, stuff happens. Here's the funny thing though... we kept an eye on the ship's speed for the entire cruise... our speed over the ground (SOG in nautical terms) never exceeded 15 knots. That was it, 15 knots TOPS to Newport, Halifax, Quebec City and Sydney. After we were done with Sydney, NS and on our way to NYC... miraculously the Jewel became capable of making 22 Knots which is very close to her fastest possible top speed. So tell me again why NCL cancelled Newfoundland if she was able to haul that fast even in rough sea conditions? I have a theory, below. DINING 1. If you've never cruised on NCL before understand what "freestyle cruising" means... -Every day, when dinner time comes(you choose when that is, fair enough) you have to make a decision on where to eat, it becomes a topic of discussion every day, so if you like to keep busy with stuff like this you might like it. -Choose the wrong time to go to a restaurant and you will wait in line. They have TV monitors around the ship to help you see which restaurants are busiest and how long the wait might be. Maybe that dining strategy you and the family have been discussing all afternoon now has to be changed. -You never get to be known to a particular waiter/waitress so if you like feel like you're something special in the dining room, you'll just have to settle for using your imagination. 2. In all fairness, the food on-board the Jewel was quite good. Specialty restaurants we used on this trip were the Sushi Bar, The French and Tex-Mex restaurants. Not sure that there was any difference between the quality of the food at the buffet and the main dining rooms. ACTIVITIES and CRUISE STAFF Here's where I had the most problem with this cruise. 1. Every day you get a "Freestyle Daily" which tells you all about upcoming events for the next day. After a couple days on this cruise I started to categorize and keep track of the items on the schedule that were involved in raising more money from the passengers. "NCL U" NCL University is evidently all about educating people about alcohol. $$ programs at the gym, $$$ at the spa, $$$ at the shops, $$$$ at the poker tournament or bingo. You get the picture. I've never seen it so blatant and in-your-face on any other line OR on the NCL Sun(my only other NCL experience). 2. Back to the events again... there was a very high percentage of NON-events listed to make the list look fuller... I'm sorry, "Bridge with your fellow passengers" is not an event. Enjoy ping pong pool deck. 3. TRIVIA LOVERS.... don't bother with the Jewel. No one really cares about it. Poorly prepared trivia quizzes, repeated questions, staff that didn't know anything about the subject matter. They had a new system of people getting initials on a card for participating in an organized activity and an extra one for winning a quiz and then accumulating those signatures throughout the cruise. Evidently those with the most signatures at the end of the cruise got to choose better prizes than those with fewer signatures. So after every organized activity you had to stand in line(an NCL tradition) to get the cruise staff person to sign your card. Many of us just didn't bother with it and hey, that's just fine with NCL, have to give away less stuff. 4. CONSPIRACY THEORY Here it is... After being sucked up to for for more money for 7 days, and then seeing that the Jewel was able to cruise at a full 22 knots, I concluded, as did many others aboard, that NCL cancelled Newfoundland because doing so would generate more revenue. All those people stuck indoors with plenty of ways to spend money, beats letting them go ashore and missing out on the revenue. BOTTOM LINE OR NCL____If you've never cruised on NCL before, do not look forward to excellence in any aspect of the cruise. Its pretty run of the mill service, food is good but not outstanding (unless you spring extra bucks for it). BOTTOM LINE ON THE JEWEL_____ Specifically on the Jewel, I think the cruise staff is lazy, inattentive and unmotivated by anything but raising revenue. Lets face it, all the cruise lines are hurting to some extent, but for me, NCL really rubbed it in my face. It will be a long time before I'll try NCL again. If you know your way around cruising, you know that "Freestyle Cruising" is just a marketing trick designed to attract those that have never cruised before. Read Less
