Just completed a 7-day cruise in Hawaii on the Pride of America. Fantastic from start to finish! Kudos to the Hotel Director, Kaj Turunen, for managing this ship with "mains de maître". The food was exquisite in all restaurants, including the Aloha Café. The specialty restaurants were all exceptional. The staff were outstanding: welcoming, attentive to detail, professional... what a memorable experience! We have been cruising with NCL for 12 years and our cruise on the Pride of America was the most memorable. We strongly suggest that this ship become the Quality Control model for the entire NCL fleet. Only negative point: the maintenance of our cabin was minimal. Garbage cans not always emptied (found dirty socks and old Xmas decorations the first day). Great service from our Butler, Spencer! Being in the travel industry, we will definitely recommend this ship to our clients and our friends! Nous venons de terminer notre croisière sur le Pride of America. Voyage mémorable à tous points de vue. Service exceptionnel, nourriture sublime, bref... la totale!!! Nos remerciements au directeur hôtellier, M. Kaj Turunen! Read Less

This was my second cruise (1 before kids)and was sceptical about going on the POA as I heard a lot of bad reviews . So I thought I would not listen to any of them and just book my family on to their first cruise Well we had a ball the staff couldn’t do enough. Yes I paid extra and got a Penthouse suite as my husband would not go on a ship unless it had a balcony lol It was worth every cent , I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much if I had a port hole or inside room . The food was amazing as we ate breakfast at the restaurants and not at the buffet. It was the same food actually but there was no pushing and shoving and people in a hurry to fill up the plates to the top .( like it was their last supper ) We did 3 tours on the islands with the NCL and were all great . The kids took over the spas which was disappointing as I was looking forward to relaxing in their with my husband .( we used the 1 spa at the back of the ship only for adults ) My teenage kids did their own thing and there were lots of things to do on the ship. I get sea sick so I have to tell you it wasn’t that bad . My boys were all good , the only time we felt the ship move is on the longest part of the sailing which was at night . The ship always sailed at night which was great as I would eat before it set sailed and then sleep on the sundeck on our balcony and I had no problem . La Cucina was a beautiful restaurant to eat at and so was Cagneys where we ate most days . Aloha cafe buffet food was fantastic but we ate there only for lunch and if we were hungry late at night . I Wouldn’t do the cruise again ONLY because of my motion sickness but I’m sure my boys would love to do it again some day as the Islands we visited are all beautiful My favourite was Kauai as it felt so spiritual in its own way . Don’t do the Beach on my own tour lol through Roberts Hawaii As I wish I would have known that it was just for snorkelling as we sat and watched everyone for 3 hours .BORED as none of us snorkel and I thout it was going to be a beautiful sandy beach lol (very wrong ) Internet on the ship is very expensive so we didn’t get it as it was $30 for 30 Min’s and you are lucky if you get it in your package . Happy to answer any questions Thank you Read Less

We four women went on this cruise "because we could". No occasion, just hadn't been to Hawaii. Our inner cabin had adequate space including the bathroom. We did not plan to nor did we spend much time there beyond sleeping. We explored each island in one way or another. The two craft classes I attended were fun and interesting. The luau was definitely the highlight entertainment for me. Shore excursions well organized. I will definitely recommend this cruise to my family and friends Read Less

To celebrate the holidays, we wanted to visit Hawai'i ! We chose that cruise because of the itinerary. As cruisers, it was our first time with NCL. It's the only ship who goes to the hawaiian islands we wanted to visit. So, this review is based only on our experience of the ship "Pride of America" (!). Professionnals, in our mid-forthies, we did many cruises in the last five years, mostly with Holland (HAL) and Royal Caribbean (RCI). Our expectation for a nice cruise (in that order) : 1. Itinerary, 2. Dining (gourmet), 3. Service, 4. Entertainment, 5. Value for money, 6. Spa. We might have been spoiled with HAL (5 stars+++ on eveything) but, at the end, we've paid way more with NCL to get way less. Feels like a summer camp. Itinerary : very good ! Ship : looks good. Embarkation : we had to wait 3 hours to get into our room and 2 hours to get out of this ship. Cabin : As experimented cruisers, we've been quite unlucky this time... Don't take the 4051 (or any room near). We were above the engine room (continuous loud noises and high vibration). Unbearable, even with ear plugs and/or white noises. We didn't slept for 2 nights. After many complaints, we've been relocated. Later, we've received a letter saying they had mechanical problems (oh, really ?) with a cheap bottle of wine. I still ask myself how come this cruise line accepted to book these rooms ? Anyhow, the state room was regular and ok. We just go there to sleep so we don't mind about the size. Dining : disappointing. The Aloha Cafe is fine (go there instead of Liberty's and Skyline's dining room if the food really matters to you). Freestyle ? We tried but, with or without reservation, you have to wait. There is no somelier. For the ones who likes personal attention, you won't get those. You can wear whatever you want, there is no dress code (scruffy appearance by most of the clientele). For junk food, try the Cadillac. It's funny ! East meet west is the best dining on board. Entertainment : very basic. Don't expect much ! Service : we felt very unwecolmed. The staff is unhappy to work on this boat and to serve the guests. At the dining room, we could hear their snarky remarks about passengers. It felt like a summer camp. Ports and Shore excursions : ports of call are great ! Rent a car : it's cheaper and you'll see/do a lot more. The excursions are overpriced compared to any other cruise lines. But if you book with the ship, ask for Lila. She's the best and the nicest. Still, did you know you can book the exact same excursions but for much less ? Go online to "Robert's Hawaii". Gym : small but efficient. Very crowded. Spa : I've tried to go twice but they told me "come back tomorrow, we're busy"... So I really don't know. I just wanted to know the prices, how it works, etc. We won't go back on "Shame of America". We will think twice before going to any NCL ship mainly because of the terrible service and the poor dining. But, again, we've been spoiled with other cruise lines Read Less

Spent our first night at the Hilton Garden Inn at Waikiki Beach. Just a 5 minute walk to the beach to take in a true Hawaiian sunset. The next day we boarded the ship and headed straight to the Aloha buffet to feast on all the wonderful food. The milk shakes at the Cadillac diner was great and dinning in the Liberty dining room was a nice experience for the kids and grandkids. Our daughter was treated to a surprise birthday cake and song. I purchased a 10 photo package to have our family pictures taken on the Christmas decorated stairs. The professional quality was outstanding. The package also included a flash drive of the 10 pictures plus 1 free and a picture of the ship. We partook in several shore excursions that met all expectations. Our true highlight was the Luau on Kauai. After receiving the welcoming Hawaiian Lei, we enjoyed island food and Hawaiian history through island dance and music. One of our family members was in a wheelchair and was trilled by a special helicopter ride on the Blue Hawaiian Mokihana Helicopter tour at Kauai. Everyone enjoyed seeing the white waves crash on shore, waterfalls, and the green hillsides. I felt safe and the pilot shared the history of the island. Some of the family did the Bike Adventure on Maui and we all learned about growing coffee and chocolate on the Kona Mocha shore excursion. We ended our cruise with the Pearl Harbor and Honolulu city shore excursion which also took us to the airport. It was a solemn moment remembering our fallen treasures and the history that took place on that December day. Our family left filled with memories of the Best Christmas Ever! Read Less

We had never been to Hawaii and thought this would be our chance to see the islands. The ship was very nice. The cabin was ok except for the bathroom. Toilet worked very intermittently and shower finally got fixed on FOURTH day of cruise. We were told by multiple people that the plumber kept getting redirected by somebody deciding if a working shower was important enough to get fixed. The dining facilities were all clean and provided tasty food. The oriental themed restaurant was excellent. Service and services were great except for our plumbing problems. The excursions were fun and reasonable. The ports allowed us to see way more of Hawaii than had we just flown in a visited a single island. We were surprised that the warehouses we disembarked through at the various ports were mostly empty. Other cruises we had been on had vendors selling locally made souvenirs. Read Less

This was a family trip chosen by other family. After reading reviews I was optimistically hopeful and for my second time in Hawaii, I thought it was a great way to see as much as possible. Day 1: The Welcome is everything you expect of a cruise ship, smiling, friendly faces all happy to have you aboard. Day 2: That's all over, you're now a captive audience and have no where to go and service is no longer a priority. 3 Hour Dinners, that were not worth the wait, 90 minute late night snacks at the overstaffed non attentive all night diner. Only item on limited menu worth getting is the 25-30 minute burger unless you are the cruise director or staff. When asking about details of a menu item, you can get a response like I'm not sure what is on it other than the description, but if you don't like it, you can order something else". What kind of response is that? Being the only ship allowed to cruise "just" Hawaiian islands we found out it is more a detriment than the exception to the rule. We were told by a key staff member due to that reason a specific percentage of employees must be US citizens thus inferring issues with being able to hire great staff. In the mornings we would be given tidbits of what to see on each island (always starting off with the same 3-5 vendors) then some key sites to see. The problem with this is that we took the maps with us and drove like crazy to see as many sights as possible including one beach that we were told we had to see, but what the hostess on the ship failed to mention was that it was landlocked by US military stations and inaccessible through the 3 different GPS routes we tried to take losing almost 2 hours of our limited time on that island. The ship has a daily newsletter that must be printed out prior to each cruise as the weather was always wrong for every day, so check your own weather apps before going ashore. The off shore excursions are extremely inflated for price, you are much better off and can afford to do so much more if you check ahead. For example, the last day they make it sound so convenient to take a $140/pp trip to Pearl Harbor and they will store your luggage, transport you there and get you to the airport. If you store your luggage for 5$/bag at the pier, go outside the pier gates and get one of the competing shuttles to Pearl Harbor for $5 early. You get the Pearl Harbor early to get one of the free tickets that they give out in the morning until they run out. When your done, get another shuttle $5 -$10 (we always got $5) down to Waikiiki beach for lunch and $10 back to the pier to get luggage and to the airport. We got a whole day in for less than half of the cost of that trip as a convenient ship excursion. Our cabin steward was great, very attentive and responsive. The comedian and illusionist were great, the remaining entertainment was typical cruise type fill in the gaps options. You could never understand the announcements on the pool deck or the entire ship as the speaker system muffled everything. The ship could be going down and you not know b/c you can't decipher the messages Read Less

I’m sure this review will never make it to the NCL website, but here goes. You have many options for your visit to Hawaii, don’t chose this one. The ship and staterooms are small, even by normal cruise ship standards. I don’t feel like the maintenance is up to standard because on two separate occasions we were unable to use our bathroom for as long as 8 hours. On the first night of the cruise we were told we could use the facilities three decks down and us being in our late 70’s and the middle of the night it was unacceptable to us. The service was very mediocre as was the food. I booked a specialty dinner for our final night at the Japanese restaurant and I don’t think the young man cooking for us had ever even eaten Japanese food and certainly didn’t know how to cook it. Most at our table did not eat it. There is little to do on the ship during the cruising hours. I will say, however, that the fitness center was extremely well appointed with top notch equipment. I was told when I booked originally that there would be golf excursions offered but not before the 90 day prior time frame. There were no golf excursions available and when I called about it was told there never were. We only did shore excursions on Maui and they were both enjoyable. I would recommend renting a car and exploring on your own as you feel comfortable doing so. That way you aren’t doing something you don’t want to. Read Less

Just came back from a 7 day Hawaiian cruise with the Pride of America, here are my comments.... - Embarkation, I tried to check in around 12:30; yet, the staff insisted on carrying my luggage to my room while I refused. They insisted and I let them at the end. But as I walked up to my cabin, it wasn't ready yet. The staff could have mentioned it as the reason, perhaps? - Dinning room - I ordered 2 or 3 main entrees and asked for them to be appetizer size so that I can sample; but that didn't work. The food still come in a big portion. Other ships from other lines I was on were able to do that. Service sometimes are slow as it took me 1 1/2 hour to finish a dinner one time. Not that I was in a hurry, but I sat for a bit long. While you think this might have something to do with the number of entrees and appetizers I might have ordered, I can only say that same dinning room, sometimes it was fast and efficient while other times were at snail pace. Also, some waiters seemed indifferent about their clients. I am no king, just comparing to others in the same dinning room on the same ship, not even other cruise ships from other lines I was on before. - Aloha Cafe - saw food on the floor being kicked around a number of times for around 15 or so minutes before someone swept it off the floor. - Food in general - sometimes a bit salty. Had a clamless clam chowder. Wait, how come there was clam on the 1st night when I had the clam chowder but not on the 4th night? There were also a bug jumping out from my salad too. It escaped to no where real fast. - Room - no water in the middle of the night? And when there was water, it was luke warm? At times, the flush didn't function in the room. - Safety drill - I was out on an excursion after dropping off my bag on the ship. The safety drill took place when I wasn't there. Fine. Was wondering how come no one made an effort to ensure that I know what to do in the case of an emergency. While the above seemed negative, the overall experience in other areas weren't that bad at all. The above examples all happened only once, except for the water and flushing ones. It's just missing a bit here and there in a few corners. Average, not exceptional, but not disappointing either. For this itinerary, it's still worth using this product, in my opinion. Read Less

Going to Hawaii was on our bucket list and chose Pride of America because it had more time at some of the islands than other cruise ships and less sea days. We ate mostly at the buffet and enjoyed the variety of different foods- we only tried the dining room once and wasn't really impressed so we stayed with the buffet- must have been an off night for our waiter in the dining room as we felt forgotten most of the time. We chose the ship excursions as we are not ones to venture on our own and maybe miss the ship. Enjoyed the excursions even though they seem pricey but we found most things more expensive in Hawaii. We found the staff pleasant and never had any issues with them. We had more issues with other guests that seem to run and barge into every place without looking and would walk through you than around you and don't know what taking your turn means. The only negative issue we had with our room 9028 was the toilet. We didn't know when we boarded the ship on the 16th that the water had been shut off so the toilet didn't work for several hours, had to go up to the 11th floor. The ship was having problems regarding water and we didn't leave till 3 hours later. Every night the water in the toilet would rise in the bowl, but flushing would solve that and the night before our last day we noticed that there was very little water coming out of the bathroom tap, the toilet didn't flush and the water kept rising up to the brim- someone came to our room and fixed it but don't know if this is an ongoing problem or was just in our room.
