We chose this cruise because our cruise last year on the Norwegian Star was absolutely wonderful, so we thought we’d try NCL a second time. We brought our daughter and her boyfriend (1st time cruiser) with us this time. I read a number of bad reviews about the ship a month or two before our sail date and was hoping it wasn’t true (comments about the stateroom design, ugly ship, etc.). Well, although I did like the NCL Star better for the shows, the Epic was still wonderful. While other reviews didnt like the bathroom layout, we preferred the shower and toilet separate. The sink on the outside of the bathroom was fine, we had no issues with it being there, in fact I preferred it. You didn’t have to wait for the other person to come out of the shower if you needed to use the toilet. The service was excellent in all areas of the ship, and the food choices were endless. I like how the pub was open 24 hours. Buffet food isn’t always the best no matter where you are, but there were enough choices that there was no way anyone would be without something to eat. I preferred the shows on the Star but these shows were very good too. You had to reserve a date and time for some of the shows. The staff work very hard, morning till night and they really do want to ensure you’re enjoying your time on the ship. We didn’t book shore excursions through NCL, too expensive. Instead you can find the same excursions through the web or when you get off the ship. We had a great vacation and my daughter’s boyfriend had a fantastic time on his first cruise. He will sail again and so will we. A few tips, take the train from Rome to Civitachecchia, it’s cheaper and very efficient. You can catch it at a number of the stations in Rome. You then pay 2 euro for a bus shuttle to the port from the station right to your ship, We took a ferry from Naples to Sorrento, you can buy your tickets in advance or at the port. Be sure to take your proof of purchase to the ticket window going to and from Naples. Sometimes the printed reservation accepted, sometimes you have to go pick up your tickets. Book tours through Tuscany Bus rather than NCL when docked in Liverno, much more cost effective. Also, we stayed one night in Civitachecchia after the cruse but noticed that there are a lot of companies waiting to take passengers to Rome or the airport for only 20euto a person, most companies charge 150euro online for 4 passengers and luggage. We walked into our cabin to a huge stain on the carpet. I mean, as if a large red slurpee was spilled and it was left that way. Now, let me be clear. Every staff member we met, including the people who took care of the rooms, was super helpful and responsive to our needs. However, this is an issue with the ship needed to be updated or maintained more properly, as they continuously cruise without break and those of us who spend a fortune on a room are left feeling robbed of the feeling that you’re in a clean room. Other than that, we enjoyed the specialty restaurants (sushi, hibachi, steakhouse - all delicious) and the trip itself. They did a great job when it came time to get off in the various ports, we never waited in a long line to get on or off the ship. We loved the shows we did attend as well. There were plenty of activities to do, and always a pool chair available if you just wanted to lounge by the pool. The balcony was gorgeous and would’ve definitely been worth the money if the cabin itself would’ve been more well maintained. We never felt our room shaking or rocking while sailing, and often forgot we were on a cruise ship. Read Less

My wife & I were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. We had spent 5 days in Barcelona (fabulous) and before that we came off a 10-days cruise from Athens to Barcelona on Oceania's Riviera (owned by NCL). Up to this point everything was wonderful.-just what we anticipated. Then came the NCL cruise on the Epic. We chose this cruise because of its great itinerary. We should have done more research in regards to the demographics of the passengers, all 4,100 of them. It seemed as if more than half were kids, from infants to teens. The noise level at times was unbearable. Parents letting their kids go wild, running & shouting. On the main level, the cruise director & his staff were constantly shouting into a microphone playing games. Out of 18 decks, it was almost impossible to find a quiet, shaded outdoor area to sit and relax. On the other hand, the dining was pretty good in the specialty restaurants but only so-so in the two free main dining restaurants. Buffet breakfasts & lunches were good. Our cabin, a mini-suite, was adequate. Excursions were fine, except for the one they canceled at the last minute. If you're traveling with kids, this is the ship for you. If you're looking for a relaxing cruise, it definitely is NOT. We probably will not cruise on NCL again, maybe on one of the smaller ships. I realize "you get what you pay for" so there's really no comparing NCL with Oceania, Seabourn or Viking (other cruise lines we've sailed), but I'd rather cruise less frequently and truly enjoy it than be frustrated traveling more often. We booked this cruise after cancelling another NCL cruise going to Havana, Cuba (during last year's hurricane). My wife and I have always wanted to go to Italy, so we booked this one leaving from Rome and then came in a few days early to tour Venice and Rome. We had an amazing time in what felt like a mini-vacation before we even ended up on the ship! The folks at ItalyScape really set us up with some fantastic tours and guides. We did a "Breakfast at the Vatican" tour before the general public was allowed in, and I definitely recommend getting there early if you really want to appreciate the artwork before the crowds show up. In retrospect, booking a cruise in July in Italy meant it was going to be hot, and it was. But going early helped. We boarded the boat on Wednesday, and I must admit it was a little strange that most of the people on this particular cruise had boarded in Barcelona, so they were halfway into their cruise already. Didn't create any issues, just interesting. Boarding was simple, and we were in our room in no time. The cabin was great...we had picked a spa suite and we were literally two doors down from the spa, which was so convenient as we spent a lot of time there. Although the Epic is enormous, and there were times when the crush of people was annoying, we pretty much stayed to ourselves, ate when we wanted to, and stayed away from the pool on deck 15 where all the families and there kids were. We got into a routine of having a cocktail at the martini bar and then hitting one of the restaurants. We really enjoyed the food, especially the Brazilian steakhouse. And all the servers and wait staff were exceptional. The do nickel-and-dime you a lot for things, such as in-room movies and shuttles at the ports). We did our own trips at the ports, and were glad not to be in the cattle call every morning. We would roll up to the port, and our guides/drivers were waiting for us for a personal tour of whatever port we visited. Overall it was a great vacation and would do it again! Definitely recommend booking the Cirque show...it was awesome. We didn't really see any other shows...just nothing our speed! Read Less

We chose this ship mainly for the ports but also wanted to try a larger ship. It was our 25th anniversary trip and we wanted to visit all the ports while having to only unpack once. The Epic gives you so many options for dining, drinks and entertainment while on board. We loved the freestyle sytem but made reservations ahead of time for both main dining restaurants- which were amazing both for service and food. So many places to relax and order cocktails, listen to Beatles music or dueling piano or shows - I don't get people who don't enjoy themselves on this ship- if not happy with one thing try another! We enjoyed the excursions thru NCL. Lots of history with really great tour guides! A bit rushed but had to expect that. The room with balcony was great! Some reviews we had read really made the room sound cramped and horrible. It's fine, if spending a lot of time in your room then you are missing out on all the great amenities this ship has to offer. Last thing - ALL the crew members we interacted with were friendly and happy. I'm not sure how they kept this up all week but they did! Read Less

Everything worked great with the cruise. It was our first cruise, so I was a bit nervous after reading some complaints on reviews...... hmmm well maybe I should not have read it as I believe now, that is you need to complain, well maybe you should not go on a cruise. We have absolutely nothing to complain about. Dining was great and we tried 3 Ala cart restaurants, they were all great and my favorite must be Le Bistro. We also eat all our breakfasts in the Garden Cafe. The Manhattan was also great and that was complimentary and it was a nice cozy restaurant and everyone took so good care of us. We eat at O'Sheehan's a few times as we did not feel so hungry and just wanted a snack or two. We will MOST likely do more cruises with Norwegian as we did really enjoy it. It was a great trip the only complain I have is that it was to short, I think next time we can do 14 days instead of 7. We stayed a few days in Barcelona before the cruise and one day after the cruise. We used Bags & Go to take care of our luggage, that was super as we did not have to carry anything. We left our bag outside the cabin the night before and then Bags & Go took our luggage to the airport for us, the only thing we needed to do was carry the bag 20 meter at the port :-) from the band, to Bags & Go's desk. We did see the Beatles show a few time and they are good, try to see it if you are going. We also did see Burn the floor and Priscilla - Queen of the Desert. Spa was great and we spend some time there, it was nice to go there and just relax, we had a spa cabin so the spa visit was included for us. SO our advice would be - GO, just GO and enjoy the fact that you are able to travel on such a great ship and see so many great places, we are a few lucky people who can do that, so enjoy it. ship was very good balcony cabin 8199 deck eight, some cabin are restricted view down to water or enclosed panels etc, this cabin was perfect the balcony was largest we have had, (one chair and one chair reclined and a small table) we were the right hand of the ship, only issues were every morning when docking at 5.30/6am we were awoken by the engine thrusters (every morning), the toilet was to the right hand side of the door shower on left but sink (which was tiny en-suite sink) was in the room - this allowed me to shave whilst my wife had a shower ( gave us extra time we looked at positives but prefer traditional bathroom styles of other ncl ships. the sofa was next to the balcony. The ship is noisy throughout ( o'sheehans has bar on one side the restaurant on the other but a main walkway for the ship through the middle, there is ten pin bowling going on , pool tables and air hockey , everyone shouting to be heard above the noise ,the atrium has noise coming up from its level to osheenans ( i normally love eating in here on other ncl ships but the noise was unbearable - the garden cafe ie canteen was a lot quieter) taste was good but Manhattan was best quieter and relaxed, although twice in the week there was piano etc entertainment - we went specifically for this but we couldn't hear any entertainment for everone at other tables shouting over the top of the music to there friends at the same table , ( if you go for music and entertainment you should listen and be quiet and allow others to listen - if you want to eat and talk go to TASTE RESTAURANT ON THOSE NIGHTS, this was another noisy un-relaxing meal on the epic something they are good at. there was never any problem getting drinks at the bars, there are lots in a similar area if some are busy go to the next. the lifts are unbearable we walked up and down stairs all the time. if you did get a lift you are sure it will stop for people getting in or out at every floor. i have never know lifts to be so busy on any of the other 9 ships we have been on, the ones at the front are the worst. The sunbeds - well on the sea day a member of staff was asked if there were any sunbeds - he proceeded to point to the sunbeds with towels on them and laughed leaving the customer exasperated ( not the best response) he could have said there were over a hundred sunbeds up on the quiet deck ( deck 18) using the stairs from floor 15 at the garden cafe entrance ( this seems to be an unknown area as it was empty most days and although there are no bar areas serviced by waiters and also infused water available. rattana sunbeds with cushions and rattan cabana style sun beds. ( i don't think i should have said about this area as it wont be quiet anymore but i think it should be advised to guests as an option on sea days when thery are standing around without beds the entertainment was good Beatles in main theater 1st night, then in the cavern most nights. cirque show was superb we went at 7.45 waited to get in at 8pm and were given ringside seats best seat in show, we said we didn't want to hurt our necks looking up and would prefer balcony seats, the staff were shocked and said these were excellent seats and they were correct ( pay extra for ground floor seats show was right in front of us and you felt like you were in the show. Barcelona - hop on hop off bus - 3 routes. Very good system. There are a couple of companies so make sure you get on the right bus on and off. We enjoyed la rambla wandering at fruit/fish market. Squares, arc triemf, familia catheral . bought copy designer bags they were asking 85 euros, we paid 15 euros, we bought two large and one smaller prada, and gucci 15 euros eack. stick to your price, i just said that was all i was paying and they knew i had their bottom price ( local bar tender told me not to pay more) i walked away at watched bottom price was 50 euros for fully automatic rolex, omega etc they are still just a cheap watch with a copy name it might not even work the next day no warranty etc , not worth taking the chance Naples -Positto Pompeii,Sorrento Amalfi coast, used a normal taxi at port, two couples 150 euros per couple we didn't know the couple he got two others to join us ( driver was Angelo - he was superb very relaxed and informative) buy tickets prior online for pompei, we were 8 people from the front and took 25 mins to get in, there are two ques on for paying in (middle line) and tour guides (left line) the ticket seller booth takes 3 tour guides to every one paying visitor, the line to the right has its own ticket booth this is for online pre paid vouchers, ( best option). there were hundreds behind us and it was very very stressful paying ( not a good experience you had to physically push your way to the desk. (buy o ticket online to avoid stress. Rome - buy ticket at newsagent ( birg ticket) across the road from the shuttle drop off point at the roundabout. Follow the road parallel to the sea to train station (easily walkable 10mins well signed. put ur ticket it in green machine at train station before boarding slide to left and it will stamp - validate it, u then use it all day on trains underground and buses 12 euros all day travel. We dont use public transport and found it easy to use ( we asked locals a couple of times and they were very helpful- seems daunting but all train stops are marked above the train doors, and they announced the stops. Stops also say colosn and trevi fount etc easily recognized. Florence €19 return leaves 12mins past hour. Takes 1hr 20mins . We went from liverno station ( cruise shuttle €15 euro each) we missed train so we went via pisa. Got off train caught bus for 2 euros, same back to station then train to florence took 1hr. Train back at 3pm plenty of time 1 hr 10 mins back, there is no 4pm train back so 5pm train would be to late for shuttle back it stops at 5.45pm Freinzi Smn station ( ie florence is end of the line ) not the freinzi station stop before. Cannes- cant get off ship till 10.30am tender if u haven't book a tender. ( worth booking - if its to early for you, don't turn up just go after 10.30. noddy train at end on tender dock. 10 euro per person lasts 40/45mins . You get audio and a little bit of an idea of where is worth a visit. We had a walk up the oldest street and a look in general shops. Coffee and cake. Spent a relaxing 3.5hrs then back to ship Palma - shop shuttle 15 euros per person return but the taxi is 10 euro total for 4 to city centre ( cathedral ) same back. (i think ncl are a big bit cheeky charging 15 euro per person, we were two people and saved 10 euros and got taxi to where we wanted and got taxi from where we finished, no unnecessary waiting or walking (taxi best option) Cruise port to bcn airport terminal 2 - taxi 39 euros set fee (20mins) overall the itinerary was good, the staff were friendly and helpful, the ship was bearable very big and lots going on but to noisy at meal times. i think they are trying to get to much in every space, mostly to make more money and the tours and shuttles are extortionate, look online for private companies or get a taxi you will save money . do your home work Read Less

We chose this ship and the route because it hit some of the ports that we wanted to see, and we wanted to begin and end in Barcelona to stay after the cruise was over. While we liked the ports, we will never sail on this ship again. We go on numerous cruises, on numerous ships, but our room on this ship was the worst one ever. Who was the idiot that dreamed up a sliding glass door for the toilet? Absolutely no privacy! Then, they placed the sink in a little cramped area with poor lighting. Actually, our entire room had poor lighting. The ship was too big, in our opinion. I think there are 18 floors, but I only saw the 18th floor “quiet area” one day and that day was windy and rainy. Fortunately, someone who started at Rome warned me on the first day to go on the ship’s phone app and reserve a spot on the tenders in Cannes. Otherwise, we would have not gotten off in time for our excursion. Speaking of their App, it is bad. I even asked at the front desk, but there is no where to see the items that you have booked. The ship is full of things that you have to reserve space for, such as the main theatre, which is bad. Many times, the App and their screens would show the event “sold out”, when A LOT of seats were still available since people booked everything they could and then did not show up. The dining room meals were “ok”. The Irish Sports bar/restaurant had some decent dishes. And, the free oriental place was fine. Although, they tried to tell us that there where probably no seats available that night, until I insisted that we were going to wait and then she immediately sat us and we saw numerous empty tables. The drinks are ridiculously expensive; especially since they add 20% tip AND 10% VAT tax. So, a can of soda was about $4.50 and a basic drink was $13.00. If you got a $35 bottle of wine, that ended up over $45. The elevators were often jammed, or would skip your floor. There are just not enough elevators for that many people. Many of the areas were not very clean. It is not a “beautiful” ship. However, the Cirque show was excellent (even if the food there was mediocre, with no choices)! They would not let you bring soda, or even a bottle of water, on the ship. If you get suckered into buying a bottle of wine at the duty free store just outside of the ship, they will charge you $15/bottle to bring it aboard if you plan on drinking it. The hot tubs, that were made for 4, often had 8 people crammed into them. We’ve already got 3 more cruises booked for this year, but we won’t be on the Epic ever again. Read Less

We had a fantastic time on board the Norwegian Epic on our cruise covering the Western Med. The package we had included two free offerings. We chose unlimited beverages and specialty dining. By having both of these we know we saved several hundred dollars. The room we had was a very roomy and clean mini-suite. We enjoyed fantastic meals both in the specialty dining rooms (Cagney, La Cucina and Le Bristo) and in the Manhattan main dining room. Our favorite bar turned out to be the Maltings where the bartenders made us feel right at home and we now have several new drinks that we had never tried before. We were able to attend all of the entertainment experiences which we enjoyed thoroughly. We enjoyed dancing in the Bliss lounge and listing to the talented singers from Howl at the Moon. Although we enjoy dressing up several times during our cruises, the freestyle experience was also good and allowed us to pack lighter. We took two of the shore excursions offered by NCL and two from another source. They all turned out great with so much to see in each port. Barcelona is a great port to sail from and to since there is so much to see there. Sailing on the Epic was incredibly smooth and the ship looked great both inside and outside. When we were sailing we spend most of our daylight hours at the adult pool area, Spice H2O. Embarkation and Debarkation we very quick and simple. Read Less

This was a fun filled birthday cruise for me. Our Cabin Stewart, Karin was the best. The cabin 13182 smelled moldy and sour. Karin did everything he could to clean and get rid of that unforgiven smell. Excellent job! Overall we enjoyed ourselves however we tried over and over again to book another cruise but the Next Cruise person was not in the office and never returned the four calls with messages that I left. The shows were excellent and so was the food. NCL Epic, please make sure that your public restrooms are cleaned and working properly. Also, I found that during breakfast some mornings the boil eggs were over 2days old. The grapefruit slices were our favorite for morning breakfast. Another enjoyable thing was the morning stretches and Abs workout. I wanted to get a massage for my neck and shoulders daily for twenty minutes but the Spa could not acomadate me. Our third Norwegian cruise, we were prepared for the experience. Found a mid balcony room that we enjoyed. Comfortable bed, huge shower but the toilet area was small. No problem. Room was clean and organized every day. Excellent service. The tours were outstanding and worth every penny. The guides were knowledgeable, buses clean and comfortable and the places were exciting. Looking at the photos, we saw the history of the Western world in seven days. Bravo! The shows were good but were too tired after touring. Saw only two shows which were good quality. Enjoyed the casino, shopping on the ship and the photo store. What was a pleasant surprise was the food. We had the speciality package and every restaurant was very good to excellent. The presentation, service and food quality was impressive. The breakfast omelettes were outstanding. When we came back from a tour, there was a late lunch waiting on the pool deck. The pool was a nice size and the bar service good. People were very nice and plenty of chairs for all, even on sea day. As a business owner, I give the staff at Norwegian five stars for this cruise. Best value for the money. We will return!! Read Less

This was the first cruise to win over the wife to cruising something i wanted to do not her...So the Norwegian Epic it was.we boarded 20/05/2018 in Barcelona. The Embarkation went well was given a map and pushed on board had to find our own way round..All looks grand to start with BUT and a Big BUT the lifts are a big joke some where out of order then you have the heaven guests that have a lift card to lock the lifts out so they don`t stop on other floors but the heaven.... So you end up with 10-15 people most days waiting for the lifts then it stops at every floor very poor... The food i found good most days...as for the nights i had brought the dining pack so we made the most of it for 5 nights i found Cagneys steak house good but you don`t get time to finish your starter before they are trying to bring the main had to tell them to slow down this was not the case in the French restaurant..we went in both for 2 dining nights...just down to me not liking fish or Italian...We had the ultimate beer package and it was great but when you dine in these pay restaurants they try and sell you wine buy the bottle at about $30 a shot...order by the glass and it`s free.. The upstairs garden room on deck 15 is ok just in my opinion just poor quality in ingredients and it`s like a rate race in their as for the pool deck outside the Garden room it`s just grilled Chicken, burgers and Chips etc etc.. We also had the coffee option and water pack...came free with the deal... The coffee from the machines in the restaurants is a joke tastes really if you order one from a bar and they make you one you are billed $4 learnt my lesson on that one Also i brought the dining pack of Norwegians website for about $88 each five months before we traveled. They also billed us on board $10 each for the dining pack they said it" was a tax" robbing sods.. As for Entertainment you have to pre book to go into most shows if you can get in that is we just stopped by the bars and had a few drinks their.. NCL Excursions are daft money most are from $250.00 to $395.00 we can fly from uk to Rome for the weekend for that money i think they are aiming for the USA market..We just done our own thing most days or made the most of a quite ship... One thing we did pay for was a pass for the Posh deck and bar on deck 18 well worth it...padded sun beds single and double great views and your own bar and staff to wait on you well worth the $59 for the week each.. Think other people need to know this a lot of people smoke in the Casino area making it stink with stale smoke. The rest of the ship is looking a little tired now needs money spending on it our cabin 8069 was size wise ok loads of storage space small toilet room and the sink they stole from a dolls house bed is small but comfy i`am only 5ft 10 and my feet over hang..House keeping not the best last guests items under bed along with the daily dust also the balcony glass was never cleaned in the week we was their looked more like frosted glass.. As for the Disembarkation what a joke....our flight and cruise was all booked by cruise nation ..return flight 13.45 we where kicked of the ship at 9am no ifs no buts tried to tell NCL about the flight leaving later they don`t give a hoot.. Would we cruise again YES but will go with someone else Read Less

The cabin was great. The bar service was lacking. Bar tenders just skipped by me frequently. Felt like I was not deserving of their attention. So my husband had to get our drinks. They liked him. The Buffett was amazing but with the exception of the great food at the tapanyaku Japanese restaurant the specialty dinners were lousy one night received cold onion soup another we received frozen shrimp scampi Anorher nite waited over five minutes for utensils to eat food was cold by then and I lost my appetite I gave up and stuck to the buffet. The entertainment shows were first rate love the burn the floor and the queens one. Overall I rated this cruise average but not worth the money we spent for the cabin and to get there. Disembarkation was easy. The ports were great and the excursions first class. Shopping lacked luster I wanted to get a hat but the sales person said he couldn't sell us anything till 2 I had no way to tell the time and missed out in the sale. So decided not to buy anything after that. The spa was great and the hair service by Linda spectacular. If there was one person that did a great job on that ship I would say Linda she was amazing!!! She took care of both my husband and I. We left her feeling like movie stars. Customer service was greatly lacking in the dinning and shopping experience on this ship. Getting around the ship was confusing not as simple as other cruise lines took 4 days before I could get to my room without going through a maze At last a little below average for the price of the mini suite w balcony. We chose this cruise for the ports. We wanted to do the western Mediterranean. We were not disappointed. Everything was wonderful. The room was plenty big enough. There was more than enough storage space. Two closets for hanging clothes, plus three drawers. We were able to put our two large suitcases in the one closet one on top of the other. My carry on fit by the couch near the sliding doors. The balcony was large. We were in room 9224. Contrary to what some people said, the frosted glass on the toilet and shower areas was not a problem. There also was a curtain that could be pulled over to separate that area if it bothered someone. The food was excellent. We ate at the garden cafe several times. The choices were unbelievable. The taste and Manhattan room were also terrific. Shanghai had fantastic Chinese food. The staff was incredible. So pleasant and accommodating. We usually stopped at Maltings whiskey bar on the 7th floor each night. Kit, the wait server was so nice and always knew what we wanted. Our housekeeping person, Arnold, was the best. Such a wonderful man. They both made us feel special. The Cavern had a Beatles band, who were very good. I chose this cruise because my friends had never been to Europe and this offered a great itinerary which includes highlights of Italy, Spain and a little bit of France. Since this is their first Meditterean cruise the 7 day trip is just right. In addition, The Epic cruise ship is one of the better ships of Norwegian because I ve been cruising with Norwegian since 2000. The staff at Norwegian is wonderful. They are friendly, and very professional. We also booked a Mini Suite and very happy with our accommodations. Our room is always clean and tidy. They offered great variety of food at the buffet and enjoyed the fine dining at their restaurants. The food is excellent and everyday it offered different choices. I was really surprised with the entertainment. (Priscilla and Burn the Floor). They had shows that are well done and well prepared. Almost like a Vegas show. There's so much to do on the ship. The excursions were great as well ! Read Less

This was our 25th anniversary trip and frankly, the cruise was poor at best. I’ve been on maybe a dozen ships and never have I seen such a blatant cash grab...$10usd beers, $7usd for one bowling round, four times the going rate for an excursion. The ship is attractive, but seriously, when you have 4000 passengers what that means is long lines for everything. Please tell me how hard it is to provide coffee for passengers? Sounds like a simple question but many days I could not get a single cup of coffee on this ship! The first day EVERY machine was down...seriously, could not get a single cup of coffee!!! Let that sink in for a minute...4000 people that could not get a cup of coffee! Every other day it was a struggle to find the one or two machines that still worked. Surely NCL has enough clout to buy machines that work? Or is this just a ploy to make passengers pay for the ‘premium coffee’ at the cafe? The food was ‘okay’. The options on the TV were awful. The paid wifi was a JOKE! Got charged for minutes I didn’t use. The cabin had a nice decor but was awkwardly arranged: do NOT go on this ship if you are uncomfortable sharing your ‘private bathroom time’ with your cabin mate...you are separated by a curtain while you conduct your ‘business’. On this ship, you are cattle...move ‘em on, move ‘em through, extract their cash and move ‘em off. Really unfortunate because it could have been so much better. This experience really soured me on cruises in general. Never will I go on a big ship again. 3 hours to get people off the boat in Cannes! Really nothing great about this. NCL really needs to evaluate all aspects of their guest experience. Maybe if they didn’t look at us like walking dollar signs and instead sought to make the experience as wonderful as possible, maybe they would get more return trips. Stay off this ship. Read Less

My husband and I went on the Mediterranean cruise in May but I'm only getting around to writing a review now. This was our first ever cruise. We didn't really know what to expect, but we loved the itinerary and decided to book it. Embarkation was quick and easy, much better than boarding a flight. We loved the ship. We couldn't believe how big it was and it felt like you were on a moving town rather than on a boat. We thought it looked very new, and loved the decorations. I didn't really like the buffet restaurant but my husband did. I found it too crowded and a bit overwhelming. Taste and Manhattan were both great. We didn't book tables and never had much of a wait. If we did have to wait we were given a buzzer, so we would go off somewhere else on the ship, have a drink, check out some of the entertainment, and head back to the restaurant when the buzzer went off. We loved the food. We also ate in the Chinese both the main Chinese restaurant and the noodle bar. Staff there were amazing and so accommodating. Although in the same venue they were quite different and it was worth going to both. We did have some on board credit which we hadn't used, so we went to Cagney's on the last night. Cagney's was absolutely amazing. We didn't want to leave, the food and the atmosphere were just incredible. We had a beverage package which made the cruise stress free. Knowing there would be no big bill at the end. I thought the bar staff were great. And we seemed to get table service at loads of the different bars which we weren't expecting, but was a great surprise. The entertainment was fantastic. We loved Priscilla. A lot of people walked out which surprised us. It was so well executed. I loved Burn the Floor, but my husband wasn't a big fan of it. We spent a lot of time at duelling pianos, and they were really talented, there was no request they couldn't sing. We spent one night at cirque, and this was well worth the extra money. I didn't really like having to rush our food down, but once the show started I could see why. The gym was very spacious with amazing views. I tried a spin class but thought it wasn't great, and is quite expensive. The spin instructor seemed quite disappointed with the tip I gave. To be honest, it was probably the worst spin class I've ever done, and no one ever tips spin instructors in any gym I've been to, so I guessed what I thought was reasonable, but she looked so upset, and I left wishing I hadn't bothered with the class at all. I thought the service everywhere was just fantastic. Obviously it's a huge ship and get busy, but there was never much of a wait. At the ports we didn't do any of the NCL trips as they were exponentially more expensive than locally ran trips, which seemed very similar. I would absolutely LOVE to travel with Norwegian cruise line again! Read Less

we booked a haven cabin to get away from the heard but our cabin was in the aft section 2,000 ft from the other haven cabins and all the private amenities , restaurant , bars , pool , concierge and etc. this was just the start of a bad situation . The haven cabins and all cabins from what I understand have a horrible layout. Absolutely no privacy between the bath and toilet area except a thin curtain . You can hear and smell everything that goes on only a few feet from the bed, terrible planning I can`t realize who would have thought this was a good idea . Also the shower was a garden tub with a two ft step over , not good for seniors ! these cabins need to be blown up and start over. We took several day long shore excursions and needed sleep but our cabin was placed right below an outdoor deck with a loud rap noise party til 1am each night . We complained about this but nothing changed . We dined in three specialty restaurants , only cagneys was worth the extra fee. In the Le Bistro , ordered a steak , over cooked took 20 minutes to get another one in the meanwhile my wife had finished her meal . To top it off a bowling ally was directly over the restaurant and they allowed bowling during evening dinner hours , we hear crash , boom , bang all through our not so good meal, unbelievable !!The sever apologized and gave us a bottle of wine which we don`t drink and left it in our cabin. I liked the layout of the common areas of the ship and the staff was great but overall I would stay away from this ship until a lot of changes are made. Read Less

I wish there were a 3 1/2 star option for the rating, as the cruise was good (not very good or average). NCL is our favorite cruise line and this was our 25th anniversary, so a Transatlantic cruise was a no-brainer. First off, we did enjoy many facets of the cruise, but there are some things that need improvement. 1. Food was great whether you were in the Garden Cafe, Taste, Manhattan Room or O'Sheehans. Service was also excellent wherever we went. (The prime rib the last night was PERFECT!) 2. Cabin service was great. Inachino was our cabin steward and we could not be happier. We kept him guessing on when we would be in the cabin because we spent a lot of time in there (more on that later), so it was hard for him to get in to clean when we set the sign for "make up cabin" - but he took great care of us. 3. Common areas are generally clean and in good repair and the crew evidently do a good job keeping everything "ship-shape" (sorry, couldn't resist). 4. The fitness center is quite large (as it should be for 4000 passengers) and the free weights and machines are in good shape and are of good quality. However, when it comes to the elliptical machines, treadmills and bicycles need some attention. At least 3 out of 4 of the elliptical machines need repairs of some kind. Just in one section of 4, one had a "thunk" on the right side, one had a video screen that did not work at all and one had no audio in the audio jack (not the headphones, as they worked fine in my tablet and other elliptical machines). Frankly, for a premier ship, this is unacceptable. 5. Entertainment: The one show we were able to get into was good (Fly Boys). This is where there is a TON of room for improvement! It is nearly impossible to get into a show. If you do not reserve a show as soon as you get onto the ship, forget about getting into one. (Never had this issue on the Dawn, Star, Pearl, or Sky). We could not get into a show, but I overheard several people mention that they got into shows several times. That is a poor system. Hence, why we spent a good bit of time in our cabin - well, at least on the balcony. 6. Spa: We bought the Thermal Suite package (as we do whenever we cruise on NCL). My understanding is that they are only supposed to sell 120 spaces. I can say definitively, that is NOT the case. We usually spent an hour to an hour and a half at a time, and over 15 days I saw WAY more than 120 different unique individuals in that spa. I strongly suspect it was over-sold. There was one thing that was unsettling to me. I am going to preface this by saying that I harbor no ill feelings toward homosexuals. Their life, their choice. That being said, there was a group of about 6 homosexual men that were ever-present in the spa and at times their public displays of affection were disturbing. (I would have had a problem with a heterosexual couple doing what these folks were doing in a public area). If you are going to do that, go to your cabin and do what you will. It seemed to me that they WANTED someone to say something so that they would have an axe to grind. It was also disconcerting that a couple of them spent an inordinate amount of time trolling (for lack of a better term) in the men's locker room. The closest I can describe it is if a man were to walk into a women's locker room and start walking about checking out the undressed/half dressed women. Again, I do not hate homosexuals, but as a heterosexual man who does not leer at women, I think some decorum is a reasonable thing to expect - regardless of your sexual orientation. Really nothing NCL can do about this, but I felt it needed to be mentioned. I hope this came across in the vein it was intended and not hateful. If I did something that made someone uncomfortable, I would want to know. 7. Ship: I realize the race is on for each cruise line to build bigger and bigger ships. The only problem is that bigger does not equal better. Elevators were regularly packed to the extreme and lines for dining and standby for shows were beyond ridiculous. There is a limit to how big you can make a cruise ship before it becomes foolish. Frankly, I think Epic is there. When you factor in The Haven and the space it takes up, the rest of the available area on the ship is not that much bigger than a ship the size of the Dawn or Pearl - so you are packing over 4000 people into an area that should accommodate about 2200 - 2400. 8. Sell, sell, sell: I felt a little like I was at a time share sales pitch at times with all of the art auctions, cruise "sales", and jewelry sales being hawked over the intercom. A little less sell, sell, sell, would have made the cruise more enjoyable. 9. Cabin: The cabin was clean and comfortable. The shower was a little small for me, but I am a fairly big guy (6' 2" and 230 lbs). My wife had no issues with the shower. The balcony was bigger than on other balconies on other NCL ships, which was great. We spent a lot of time on the balcony enjoying the ocean and the sound of the waves and wind. 10: Excursions: We did an excursion at every port and had a great time. A couple of times the Epic Theater was very crowded and confused - but that was not the crew's fault. A lot of folks showed up over an hour early for their excursions which caused the crowding. In all fairness, one morning, the local port officials took longer than expected to clear the ship. An announcement could have been made that folks could show up 30 minutes later than originally scheduled. I do not want to come across as saying that we hated the cruise. Far from it! We had a lot of fun and have some great photos and video and found a couple of places we want to go back to visit. However, I did want to mention the areas of concern and where there is room for improvement. I would cruise with NCL again in a heartbeat - but probably not on the Epic. Not because the crew was lacking, but because of the problems that come with being on a ship this size Read Less

We have done this before. Twice we sailed from Barcelona, west with final stops either in Miami or Cape Canaveral. This trip took us the other way and it gave us some stops in ports (Cadiz, Gibraltar, Malaga) we were not familiar with and two stops in places we have been to before and enjoyed (Bermuda, Funchal). If you ever plan on doing a TA...check to make sure we are on it...42 days under our tighter belts and we have always enjoyed clam seas and fantastic weather. The ship was basically "sold out" (a few empty inside cabins according to hotel director Nelson) and I think the days of light loads on TAs are in the past. More of us seem to enjoy the sea days. However, there was a higher percentage of solo travelers in regular (non studio) cabins so the Epic was not truly at capacity. And, that's what I felt. It did not feel as crowded as I thought it would. Weather and crowd covered, here's some details: Embarkation. Smooth. We arrived at the port around 11:30am and we were on the ship by noon. I've heard, read, some horror stories about Cape Canaveral and our only experience boarding there in the past was on Disney so this was a pleasant first. Food. We did not have a bad meal and we had many meals. Some meals were better than others, some risottos were memorable and some filets were just OK but overall, the food was fantastic. We ate in every specialty restaurant (4 UDP plus two Platinum meals makes 6...we doubled down on Cagneys). No Spiegel this time but we've done it before and the meal was good. The service at all the restaurants was also great. Except...La Cucina. Long wait to be seated, looooong wait to place order. Longer wait to get meal. But the veal was perfection. Can't speak to the Garden Café buffet food with much authority. We did some breakfasts and a few light lunches and they were all good but we never ate dinner there. We did, however, stop by for Nutella crepes and ice cream. E.V.E.R.Y. Night! (the ying to all this food yang coming up under the spa and fitness portion of this review). Shoutout to Soledad (hostess), Ronnie Castillo (waiter), Julie-Anne (cagney waitress), Roberto at Le Bistro, and the nice hostess at the Garden Café who welcomed us every night at 9:30pm with "you're back for a crepe" and a smile and zero judgement! Entertainment. We've seen Burn the Floor and Priscilla and they were awesome before and awesome again. Special for this cruise, the cast of Burn and Priscilla put together two shows-- a tribute to women in music and a Broadway Cabaret and they were both phenomenal. Particularly the Broadway show tunes show. You could tell that they put a ton of work into it and their excitement, investment and enjoyment of the performance came across every piece. Juggler, comedian, hypnotist, howl at the moon, bar musicians were OK. Some better than others (for example, the Howl at the Moon guys were good but we've seen better). Shout out to Hector of the teal shirt and grey suit entertainment reservation staff. Always professional and helpful. Fitness/Spa. This gets it's own heading because 1) we always purchase the spa pass and 2) we go to the gym every day. (we also never take the elevators---pardon the brag!--and as I write this...maybe those were crowded and well...who knew?!). The spa (we call it our water park time) was as good as we remember. Quiet, peaceful, steamy, bubbly, heaven. We end most of our late afternoons there and because of the 14 out of 15 sunny days...we went from pool side to heated lounger and thermal spa every day. The spa ladies said they had "sold out" but I only had to wait for a heated lounger a couple of times and it did nothing to bring down my bushwacker, cuba libre, sangria, dark and stormy mood. (shout out to Vladimir--Serbia wants it's best bar tender back). The gym was likewise never overly crowded (maybe it had something to do with the higher age average on the ship or we just got lucky). The staff was great (shout out to Rohit in the gym and Suzette at the spa reception). Clean, well maintained and. in case you have never cruised on the EPIC, the gym is ginormous. Cabin. You've read the "what were they thinking?" reviews I am sure. Who puts the toilet and the sink where the nightstand and the closet should go? And why do you have to walk thru the shower to get in the room? It's not that bad (and the last two sentences were meant to be funny people). Yes, it's weird and if I were sharing a cabin with a stranger or my smelly teenager...it would be an issue. But check you tube, look at floor plans and realize that the guys who designed this ship were crazy and came up with a funky, curved cabin, cubicle shower/tub toilet French j'ai nes sais quois. Embrace the uniqueness (meaning nobody has done it again and never will). We don't mind it. The bed was super comfortable, our balcony was perfect and there's almost too much storage space. Of note for Epic newbies...because the staterooms have these curved shapes, some have the bed closer to the door and some have the bed closer to the balcony. Closer to the balcony is better if you want/need some distance between the bathroom(s) and your pillow. Our steward was THE BEST. Shout out to Victor. Epi(c)logue. (Ha. I kill me) Service was almost perfect and you should never expect perfection. The crew was attentive, friendly and helpful. It's a long crossing with some long days for them (I was not going to mention that the turning of the clocks forward six times was painful...but there it is). We did not do any shore excursions thru NCL, we did not need to go to guest services, we did not gamble and we did not have anything to do with the youth program staff or the medical staff but every other department gets a solid A (even with the small La Cucina service blip). The only ugly (and I don't mean physically) people we came across were some of the passengers but that's normal. When you witness someone being rude to a staff member, stop, let them move on and then do something or say something nice to the staff member. It's the right thing to do. Call me preachy. Read Less

This is our second time on the Epic doing a transatlantic and would do it again. The first few days are at sea. So relaxing is key. We got passes to the spa which is a must for true relaxation. The spa is large enough to never feel crowded except maybe noon to 4 pm which is the time we would not go. Mornings at the gym and spa were the best times to go. We order fruit and danish in our cabin as a wake up everyday which is free. Just fill out the card and leave outside the door in the evening. We are at the Manhattan dinner most evenings. Remember to make a reservation 90 days out online for the no charge restaurants. But wait till on board for the pay restaurants. Also the sooner you make reservations for the different shows on board the better. We do it first thing. The food on board is very good. Taste for lunch is a nice sit down restaurant but the menu stays the same all week. The cabin is fine just the bathroom is a little odd with translucent glass. Shows are good and there is something to do everyday if you want or just go sit in a bar. Shakers was our favorite with a piano player most nights. All employees are pleasant and helpful. The ports are great and ending in Barcelona which is a fun city. Read Less

What a great experience on our first TA Cruise! We were celebrating our retirements and our 40th anniversary. It was our second time on the Epic so we were aware of the little quirkiness of the ship...but that's what gives the ship it's "character"! The food was FANTASTIC...with Cagney's and Moderno being much better experiences than we had on previous NCL ships. The entertainment was PRIMO...as long as you were patient and made reservations. Service was "spot on"... with our cabin steward, Noel and Cha Cha in Shaker's being our favorites! The crew all seemed happy & helpful. Andre was a great cruise director. (I hope he met everybody!) Marj had some minor internet problems but they were corrected quickly. We made many new friends,as we usually do on our cruises. There were plenty of quiet areas for some murder/mystery novels too. We were at the gym every day and had no problem getting on the equipment. The room was very comfortable with plenty of storage...again we already knew of the quirkiness of the bed and bathrooms, so no surprises there! We considered the curved walls and the bed just part of the Barcelona "Gaudi" experience! We enjoyed the bars and the musicians and the wine selection was pretty good. In Cagney's they had I-Pads that showed all the available wines with pics of their labels. GREAT IDEA...maybe consider doing that at all the restaurants/bars! The itinerary was all new for us and the shore excursions were well planned and interesting...Loved Madeira, Gibraltar and Seville! The tour guides were all excellent with maybe the exception of Igor at the "Caves of Nerja". (I think he was having a bad day). The debarkation was a breeze...probable the quickest and easiest we ever got off a ship! THANKS NCL FOR A WONDERFUL TIME!!! Read Less

Norwegian Epic: We chose this cruise because we wanted to go back to Ocho Rios and George Town. We were concerned about the size of the ship and if it would be too crowded. But the ship itself is very nicely decorated, it seems to have plenty of room, and it didn't feel crowded at all. All the staff was very friendly, pleasant, and helpful. We always got seated right away at the restaurants, the food was good, and we didn't have to wait a long time for our food. The cafe was very nice and had a good variety. We really enjoyed the shows and entertainment, and the cruise director was nice and friendly. We were impressed how they run the photo gallery now. You don't have to search for your pictures anymore. You are assigned a bookcase and binder number, and they put all your pictures in your binder. The only thing that wasn't easy was embarking and disembarking. With that many people on the ship it was a very long line to wait in both times. However, getting off the ship at the different ports for excursions was very organized and was not a problem. The only bad experience we had was in George Town trying to get back on the ship after our excursion. The line for the tender boats to take us back to the ship was so long and you were standing in the hot sun the whole time. There were about 4 or 5 cruise ships there at the same time and they didn't have enough tender boats for that capacity. If we knew that was going to happen we would have bought hats and cold water before we got in line. And when we finally got to the NCL tent, they had cold water to give us, but they only had about an inch and a half of water in each cup! We all so hot after standing an hour and a half in the hot sun that we could have drank a whole cup of water. Overall we were very pleased with the ship and staff, and we had a good experience. Our excursion at Great Stirrup Cay was the beach and snorkel. The beach was clean, the water was very beautiful, and there were plenty of beach chairs. It was a relaxing day to just walk around, snorkel, and soak up some sun. We enjoyed the free buffet lunch and there was a bar if you wanted to purchase any alcoholic beverages. We didn't see very many fish when we were snorkeling like we did when we were there many years ago, but the water was pretty cool that day so we didn't stay in for very long. In Ocho Rios we did the Bobsled and Dunn's River Falls. We took a very nice chair lift up to Mystic Mountain through the rain forest. The views of the coast and water was beautiful. When you got to the top you got to ride the Bobsled down. It was very fun. It may have only lasted about 2 minutes, but then the track automatically took you slowly back up to where you started. You could ride it as many times as you wanted and there was an infinity pool you could swim in that had an amazing view of the coast. However, we had to keep track of our time since we still had to go to Dunn's River Falls. When we got to the falls it was very crowded and our group had to wait for quite a while before we got our guide. There were many groups and many lines going up the falls, but it is still a very fun experience. I would recommend just doing one of the excursions instead of combining them. That way you can get there first thing in the morning so that it won't be so crowded and you would have more time to spend at the location. In George Town we took the Turtles, Turtles & More Turtles tour. This was a great excursion there you got to see a lot of sea turtles of various ages. There were huge ones swimming in a big area with a board walk around it. They also had different pools with some younger turtles, and some pools with baby turtles that you could actually pick up and get a picture with. They were very cautious and had you sanitize your hands before and after touching the turtles. They also had an aviary that had several different kinds of birds you could look at and feed. But the best part of all was actually being able to swim with the turtles! Be sure to bring your water cameras to get the best pictures up close of these beautiful sea turtles. Finally, our last excursion was in Cozumel where we did the Speed Boat, Snorkel & Beach. That was awesome fun! After a brief training we got our gear and got into a two person speed boat. We followed our guide through the beautiful caribbean waters for about 20 minutes. Then we got out and snorkeled for about 20-30 minutes. After that we got back in the speed boats and did some more racing over the water for another 20 minutes. When we got back to the beach we had a delicious lunch. They gave you the option to purchase pictures of you in the speed boats, but before we could purchase ours we had to get on the bus to go back to the port. Before getting back on the ship we had plenty of time to do some shopping. This was a very enjoyable cruise and the ship was very nice! Read Less

I've sailed Norwegian four times. This was my first on Epic. I was reading reviews prior to the cruise and was slightly apprehensive. It took me a good day or two to learn my way around the ship. A strange layout. And yes, the bathroom is not the best set up. I was prepared for that. And the complaints about not being able to get a lounge at or near pool is true. But this was nothing that ruined my cruise. The crew were all very pleasant. Ship was clean. Food was plenty. If you couldn't find anything you liked, i think its a taste bud issue. Entertainment was enjoyable. Don't miss Cirque Dreams. Its worth the extra $. How am at the Moon is a MUST! They are fabulous. Embarkation went smoothly. Disembarkation, not so much. Took forever. But again, you have to expect these things and just go with the flow and not let these things ruin what should be a great vacation. Read Less
