I have been on this ship in the past, and was unimpressed then. After it being refurbished and the dirt cheap pricing we figured let's give it another try. Pros, great staff, super friendly, and cheap pricing. I went to Cagneys twice and it was excellent. Unfortunately very boring, as it was the last time. If you want to lay around the pool the entire day then this will work for you. However I have been on other cruise lines with so much more to do like fun pool area games etc. I literally watched a movie in my cabin one day I was so bored. Terrible activities, unenthusiastic entertainment staff. I went to a trivia contest and it lasted all of 10 minutes. The person doing it rushed through as if he couldn't wait to get out of there. The cruise director Jasper is just boring, plain and simple. A 5 night cruise that has a comedian, who was hilarious, and a magician. Why only 1 night for the magician? Buffet food is god awful. Also there is a funky sewage smell on occasion at the rear of the ship. Hate to be so negative but it's the truth. Again staff was awesome, and disembarking was as easy as it gets, Carnival should take some notes on this. I hope this helps, even for the very low price, I will not be on this ship again. Read Less

I wanted a low cost cruise and I got it. The Escape has obvious design flaws, pools are too small and not enough elevators, and 6 hot tubs for 4000 people is not enough, but beyond that was fun time. The entertainment was really excellent and a lot to do. After Midnight was great and so was Choir of Man. The "side" shows Fab 4, the comedians and Kid Ace (magic) were also great. The water slides and rope course (where else can you zipline on a ship) were also a blast. The ship felt a little understaffed. Food and service was good EXCEPT in the "luxurious" Manhattan Room where children were allowed to run on the dance floor and a baby in diapers was crawling around. YUK! The staff did nothing with these horrendous kids nor the parents who apparently thought their children's behavior was "cute". On previous Norwegian cruises they prohibited shorts in the Manhattan Room but apparently now anything goes. If you are expecting anything luxurious or classy probably Norwegian is not for you. Service was slow to non-existent in the Manhattan Room. The piano bar District Brewhouse was very fun although drinks pricey. Service in Taste and Savor restaurants was excellent! Another plus is never had a problem getting a table at the buffet which is another big plus. I love O'Sheens pub restaurant in atrium but sometimes it's noisy with the atrium activities. Tendering at Great Stirrup Cay was a nightmare and even though we were in tender group 2 (of 24) took almost 45 minutes to get off. Some waited 90 minutes to get a tender, There were two ships at the Island and the captain said it would be crowded and it was although they had plenty of chairs on beach if you walked a little. For some reason Norwegian chose NOT to use the ship tenders so waiting for the shore tenders (now split between two ships) was nothing short of a nightmare. They wanted $21 rent for an umbrella on beach, which seemed ridiculous. Water was warm and nice in Great Stirrup Cay. Another slight minus was the Port Canaveral stop was too late in the day to do much there. (got in at 1:30) I used Lyft to get to the Space Center (which BTW is much cheaper than the Norwegian Excursion) but had only about 3 hours at the space center which isn't enough time to see everything. (they close at 6) I'd suggest recruiting 3-4 people to go and getting one UBER or Lyft. Still I hadn't been to the space center in 30 years and was very fun to see. In conclusion I got a good deal on this cruise so I can't complain a lot. Read Less

I was asked to join cruise when one of the participants became ill. I am retired as are the others and had no previous plans so timing was not an issue. The ship is beautiful but not as large as others. I will say that there is not enough activities to participate in on at sea days, I mean how much bingo can one play? The food was adequate, nothing special. I will say that they are very attentive to cleanliness. Evening entertainment was good. Great vocalists in the lounges. The staff overall are very friendly. Received the daily Freestyle newsletter daily. It did not contain any international news as others I had received on other lines. There are no schedule of the limited programming on the TV in the cabins. There are movies on the TV but I had no idea when they started. There are no big screen movies on the ship. I was sorry that we only had half a day in St. Thomas. Read Less

I wanted to visit the Greek Ilse and sail by Norwegian. The crew / staff were very good and helpful. Food and services very good. The onshore excursion were organized very well. We did onshore excursion at every port. The tour guides that were selected by Norwegian cruise were excellent. They explained everything in detail within the time frame. We took a lot of photos and videos at every port. The embarkation and disembarkation was very smooth. We were happy with our stateroom and it was done twice in a day. There was lots of entertainment and by far we enjoyed all. The dining restaurant's were good, we enjoyed more at the Moderno restaurant. The food here was excellent. The breakfast bar had variety dishes to choose from. There was lots of fun and entertainment at the pool deck. Over all my cruise was excellent and I am looking forward to have the similar excitement in near future. Norwegian cruise viva. Read Less

The ship is beautiful and the food at the specialty restaurants was interesting and delicious. Be sure to book early! The waitstaff catered to our every need. The "adult" pool is a bit too small for the size of the ship. Though children are not supposed to use the adult pool, no one is assigned to check so I was forced to put up with others' kids. Likewise for the hot tubs. The entertainment was first-class. The performers were so talented and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed every show. There were plenty of bars with comfortable seating but some of the bartenders could be more friendly. The ports of call were just so-so, very, very touristy and the excursions could add significantly to the cost of the cruise...pay close attention to the excursion reviews and be selective. Sometimes I find it better to hire a driver/taxi to take me to what I want to see. If you stay in port, you will not get the flavor of the culture. All in all, despite shortcomings, I'm a fan of the Breakaway. Read Less

I have to start by saying the staff onboard this ship certainly give the impression that they love what they are doing! That was very refreshing! The activities were plentiful and entertaining. The food was good, but I do have to say that service in the Main Dining Rooms was difficult at times. The staff seemed to be run off their feet. During our first breakfast in Taste it took almost half an hour to get our first cup of coffee. The empty cups and cream were set on the table as soon as we ordered coffee, but no one came to fill the mugs despite asking multiple times. This trend continued intermittently throughout the cruise. Sometimes we did receive a small pot of coffee right away, but all too often we had to beg for our first cup...and refills just didn't happen. The bar drinks and other foods were typically served in a timely manner though. Our last dinner which we took in the Manhattan Room took over 2 hours. This was disappointing because we had a 7:30pm show and took care to arrive to the dining room by 5pm. At 7:30 we actually left before dessert was through. This was shocking. It was very busy by 7:30, but when we were seated at 5pm there was only a handful of people seated. The food was good, but the slow service was disappointing. Our server seemed to be rushing, so we didn't complain. It just meant that we arrived to Choir of Men late. But speaking of Choir of Men...that was fantastic! Such a great show. We also really enjoyed After Midnight and the bar entertainment, namely Sing-a-long with Justin Golan and Howl at the Moon (duelling pianos). The cabin was nice with a lot of storage cubbies. (We had a mid-ship balcony on the 15 floor). Our 14 year old son thoroughly enjoyed Entourage. All in all an enjoyable vacation. Read Less

This cruise was chosen for the itenery. The staff were all excellent. The entertainment was 5 stars. We were not impressed with dinner choices in main dining room. The picture is of Santorini, the most scenic of all the ports. Taken from Jade. The embarkation and debarkation went smoothly. We took the fast train from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome. Spent three days exploring Rome and sights after the cruise. The collision was crowded and every place we went was filled with tourists. We got the three day pass to ride metro and buses. Also the fast pass the enter the Vatican and systine Chapel. Everywhere we went it was a hugs amount of walking. All the Italians were friendly and helpful, when we ask for directions in English. Some spoke English and others didn't. We speak Spanish also and found they understand Spanish as many words are similar. Personally we found Rome to be quite hectic and lots of traffic. Everyone was in a hurry. Seems like they are stressed out, too much! The metro (subway) at times was packed and I felt clostrofoblc. None of the younger people get up and let older ones sit down. I am glad we went to Rome, however may not go back. I think going to Tuscany and staying there for a while would be nice. Read Less

I am writing this review as a second time cruiser with NCL (I did the NCL Star last year): we are a couple in the thirties and have been on this 7-day cruise departing from Barcelona and enjoyed it very much overall I must say! Embarcation was very fast, we did the check-in online so it was a matter of being given the card to enter the ship and that was it. Took about 15 minutes from the taxi to the Atrium in Deck 5. At the time we enter the ship our cabin was ready to go so we did the unpacking straight away. Food Food was not a surprise since we cruised with NCL before, so we felt like almost the same dishes were being served but it did not matter for us, it was tasteful enough, waiters were helpful in general, no disappointments. Just a little thing, the two times we dined in the Manhatan the waiters were not as kind as in the Taste somehow, it felt like they were rushing us to finish our meal. I would say it might have been bad luck for us or something, but nothing to worry too much to be honest. Entertainment Burn the Floor - Outstanding! We enjoyed it very much! Priscilla - OK but too long for my taste. Cirque - We bought the non-premium seats and we could enjoy all the performances without any obstructions. The food was very nice, we thought though that the food would be served during the performance but we ended up to eat before the show started. The only problem was the lack of room to accommodate 6 people in such a small sized table. It got to the point the person next to my wife did not know which water cup belonged to. I liked the fact that some performances were assisted by random cruisers in the tent to perform in the comedy show, it was very funny and entertained us a lot! Epic Beatles: I'm not a big fan of them although I must admit they do a very good show! my wife loved them. We saw 3 shows with them and enjoyed a lot. The show with the violin and the mascarenhas/dancer performers (can't remember their artistic names) was mind blowing we attended 2 shows, excellent!! Aqua park Water tubes were awesome! but be sure to be there early in the morning as the queue can build up quite quickly. My preferred (more intensive) was the green tube then the one were we could ride with the inflatable donut style. Swimming pool were lightly heated so you might not expect a thermal shock as I normally have. Jacuzzis were not as crowded as we expected and we could be there til late as we pleased. We felt rules were relaxed in terms of bringing drinks to the jacuzzi as many people did it without beeing asked not to, which is nice. It was also very easy and quick to find sun loungers too. Overall: Despite a lot of negative reviews about this ship in this forum we could not find any issues pointed out perhaps this might be because at this time of the year there are not many kids around so the vessel is not that crowded and noisy. No long queues anywhere for us, no seats finding problems on the shows either, nice food, great staff. Next cruise on the way with NCL again for sure! Read Less

6th cruise, 2nd time on the breakaway. Other than being told I needed to wear pants to eat in some of the restaurants (i didnt bring any, I'm from the northeast and we dont wear pants when its 50 degrees, why should i when its 87?) My wife and I and our 5 singleish friends had a blast. Brought my own glow body paint for glow party and my kick ass 80s rocker attire for the 80s party. I highly recommend bringing costumes for Norwegians parties on any ship, it makes it way more fun! The casino dealers were really nice, they let me feel like a drunken king in blackjack where I was doubling 12s and 13s and nailing 21 lol. They did however make sure they got it all back by the end of the trip... those meanies. I absolutely loved the excursions my group did, Gumbalimba park in Roatan, monkeys and macaws climbing all over you? Must do! We also went river tubing in Belize, quite a bit of travel for it, but in my opinion, it was the coolest thing I've ever done. I go river tubing back home, but to be in that jungle-esq atmosphere and seeing iguanas and hot springs was cool. We had calm waters the entire trip which I haven't been fortunate to have on a few previous trips, but I also go during hurricane season cause its the cheapest lol. Disembarking was simple but they did have us in what felt like a rat maze around deck 7 which I guess made it feel like the line is moving faster. Live music was all really good around the ship, I danced pretty much everywhere I went. The wait staff and bar tenders were all incredible even when they have to tolerate "those people" you know who you are you snotty drunk entitled people. But they handled you like champs and brushed it off. Room steward kept our room clean and stocked, I definitely felt multiple hints and pressure for a cash tip, which I normally leave a hundo anyways, but this guy was definitely pushing the subject. Overall, great week! Cant wait to be able to afford another! Haha! Read Less

We are avid cruisers. The ship was beautiful, clean, alive with activities and the staff was AMAZING! Staff was amazing helping me with my Keto diet!! Above and beyond helpful!!! I could easily order meals without carbs, but it was sad to have no dessert. Sugar Free is different from Carb Free. So I spoke to the head chef, and he assigned an assistant maitre’d to help me. They ended up creating a special carb free dessert for me for every night! I felt so cared for!! It was amazing! That assistant maitre’d phoned me regularly in our cabin and left information for each meal. It was unbelievable!! The only downside to this sailing was that it was far too crowded. Perhaps it is the nature of the cold-weather cruise for the inside gathering areas to be crowded. People were fighting for seats in the Atrium. Groups would stake out seats in the Atrium first thing in the morning, and then take turns saving those seats throughout the day. Staff always brought in folding chairs, but we were on a cruise for comfort and relaxation. Folding chairs did not meet our needs. That’s why they put the wonderful, cozy furniture in the Atrium. Great value I had a great time and would definitely do it again. The ports were well chosen, just the time at the ports could be longer. It was sometimes a little bit rushy. The food onboard is great, a final cake walk would be great, and thr prizes at the specialty restaurants are too high.the food there is great though. Overall, there is a good chance beeing again onboard NCL The staff is friendly, the entertainment was great and the bar tenders new their job well. However adding 20%on every single onboard service is unreasonable. Also the prices for excursions are far too high, you can make some excursions in half prize, if you do them by yourself. Both are things not related with the cruise, more likely with the policy of NCL. Freestylecruising is a good invention and makes the cruise enjoyable for everybody. Overall, well done and save sailings Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was our 20th anniversary and it was on our bucket list to do this cruse. Overall, a very good trip, all ports were exciting. The ship: the bartenders at the Whiskey Bar, Joseph, Z, and Freddie were amazing, excellent service. There are a few things I think could be better, with the drink package, things like a latte, fresh squeezed juice should be included. Also, the buffet is very boring, and some of the staff that serves in the buffet are rude and lazy. The other restaurants were good. Again, the menus were not very blah. I have been on other cruises where the food is much much better. We tried the sushi place, which was La carte, that was very good, There were other la cartes but we didn't try them. Freestyle dining is nice they just need to work on the menu a bit more. Other than than, most of the staff work very hard to ensure everything is good and they take care of you. The Bliss nightclub is very nice and the DJ is awesome. Nice place to hang out We had a balconey cabin, it was very comfortable. The beds were very comfortable. We chose this cruise to experience NCL. The Breakaway is a beautiful ship. Embarkation is very smooth and easy and we were in the ship in no time. Our ocean view cabin, 10102, is very nice. It is located at the very front of the ship. It seems bigger than the usual ocean view cabin. It has a huge window looking out the front of the ship. There is a huge bench right in front of the window where you can actually lie down. On the last day of the cruise we slept on this bench and we had a view of the sky and the stars. It's sleeping under the stars in comfort. Wonderful experience! We would not mind choosing this cabin again. Dining is excellent, the food is very good. There are several complimentary dining venues to choose from. We really appreciate this freestyle cruising. You do not have to dress up in the two dining rooms, Savor and Taste. The Manhattan restaurant is nice, too, if you want to experience dinner with a show or live music. Then you have Shanghai Noodles which offer noodles, fried rice and other Asian delicacies. O'Sheehan, the 24 hour, eatery is excellent. We love the chicken wings. The service is outstanding, specially the cabin steward. Jon Paulo, our steward made sure that our vacation was the best. He caters wonderfully to our requests with a smile. Andy, of the Bar Staff is another excellent crew. When we ask for water to take medication, he immediately respondent and even brought us the free peanuts. We missed two ports on this cruise due to weather and medical emergency. However, NCL was generous enough to give us a $100 on board credit. The dining staff were great. We want to make a special mention to Pedro, the Asst Maitre D, Kimberly, Juliet and the rest of the dining crew. We were not impressed with the shows. Rock of Ages and Burn The Floor were just boring and no other shows were presented. The negatives: 1. Ship communication and dissemination of information should be improved. NCL needs to use the TV channels to disseminate important information. The multiple channels on the ship television were pretty much used to sell ships excursion, spa, and merchandise. They should devote one channel to publish information. For example; we learned that the ship will miss its second port from an angry passenger in the shops. We did not know that the ship will spend another sea day and returning back to Miami until we heard it from this angry passenger. They could have used one of the TV channels to broadcast this information. 2. Shanghai Noodle Restaurant is located next to the casino and you can smell the cigarette smoke emanating from the casino. Several passengers eating were sneezing due to the casino cigarette smoke. They need to relocate or cover the restaurant from the casino. 3. The soap dispenser in the bathroom (at least the Men's bathroom) does not dispense or won't dispense the soap. In an environment that emphasize cleanliness, they need to make the soap dispenser to easily dispense hand soap. But overall, it was a nice and enjoyable cruise Read Less

Alaska was a bucket list trip for my mother and father. Unfortunately, my mother passed away and my father is starting to lose mobility. So, this was a very important trip for my sister and I to take with my father, and Alaska did not disappoint. The embarkation went smoothly, we were on the ship by 11:30 am which is a very impressive turnaround time. The ship is amazing as always. NCL ships tend to have a very similar layout, so I already knew my way around the 19 deck (20 if you include laser tag) floating luxury hotel. On the Joy they also have Galaxy Pavilion which is a virtual reality arcade. I walked around it with my sister and it seemed really interesting and an unique idea for a cruise ship. Spice H20 has a huge hot top much bigger than their other ships. Of course, I was most impressed by being able to sit in a hot top while staring at glaciers. The dinning I have mixed views on: Buffet: Convenient, easy to grab something quick, great for an easy breakfast, the omelette station is good for getting fresh eggs, but the food did not really stand out. Observation Lounge: Great place for getting a snack! The first day I had a spinach focaccia bread that was delicious, I kept going back hoping they would have more, but it was only there the first day. Surprisingly, the deserts they had there were different than the ones at the buffet and better! If you like carrot cake look for it at the observation lounge! Local: Their appetizers are great; they have a Greek watermelon feta salad that's good. Their burgers are burgers and a bit over-cooked to my taste (I was surprised that they did not ask me how I wanted it) Taste/Savor/Manhattan Room: Their main dinning is good. Their steak/beef menu options are nothing to write home about. (Granted I have to take into account that I may have been a bit spoiled by my first two nights at specialty restaurants) I was however impressed by their appetizers in fact one night I order 3 apps instead of getting an entree. Their deserts were fabulous! NCL knows how to do desserts across every restaurant that they have on board. Temppanyaki: Was spectacular! The show was good, the fried rice and vegetables were good, but most importantly the filet mignon melted in your mouth. This restaurant is a must! I love hibachi and NCL out does most if not all of the hibachi places I have been to. Cagney's: The service here was beyond compare. You can tell NCL takes pride in this restaurant! The steak was great and do not even get me started on how amazing the truffle mash potatoes were. La Cucina: This was my least favorite out of the specialty restaurants. It was good and better than main dinning (though the service was not anything special, and I had some great waiter in the main dining rooms that were more attentive) The burrata was my favorite part and the pesto gnocchi was also very good. Entertainment was pretty good. I really enjoyed elements it was different, engaging, and had amazing special effects, it is a must see! The performers were also friendly and fun! The game shows were always nice to stop and watch in the atrium, I love the shows that include guests, they are always funny, and a good time. There were some days that not much in the itinerary seemed interesting, but I grabbed some friends I met on board and started a game of cards in the observation lounge which was just as fun. Dan Dan the cruise director was great, and I really enjoyed him in late night entertainment. If you like dancing the social is the place to go however, I do have some mixed feelings there. For the most part the service was spectacular. However, I did have an unfortunate incident (which happened to be on my birthday) where a crew member yelled at me, then my sister and it caused my sister to get upset because she is shy and quiet. (Which made me more upset) The next day my sister ran the cruise critic and I met the officers. Martin Ivanov the general manager said to come with him to with any concerns, and without much detail I told him it was my Birthday and this crew member was a jerk and provided him with a picture of the crew members badge. I have to say both him and Ana Maria Malata really took care of me and helped make my birthday special, I was blown away. My cabin Steward was amazing I some how do not have a picture of his badge but I his name was Joevi (I probably misspelled that) He decorated my cabin and hand wrote a birthday card for me. I felt bad about making a compliant and was so impressed by the crew that I thought “whatever everyone has bad days.” Unfortunately, the second to last night at the 80’s party in the social. The crew member that I said was a “jerk” confronted me saying that I got him in trouble. (I am not using his name because I really do not want anyone to be in trouble) He might have meant well, but he was in no way apologizing and, even kind of threatened me, so awkward. I work in corporate management and it made me cringe to think of employee confronting a complaint/ threatening a client. It is a bit sad that I had to avoid a crew member on the ship, but at that point the cruise was almost over and I really did not want to be involved, I just wanted to enjoy my vacation. The rest of the crew was amazing, and I really hope if I go on another NCL cruise that I will not have to deal with an angry crew member, and that no other future passenger does either. Excursions: Juno: Canoeing/Glaciers Fun but there was no wildlife, they did provide rain gear which was a bonus Skagway: Kayaking Cold, but beautiful. I saw bald eagles, a bear, and tons of salmon! Ketchikan: Lumberjack Show/ Totem Park Lumberjack show was a bit cheesy but fun and learning the history of clans in Alaska through Totem stories was a cool experience. Glacier Bay: Not an excursion but still an amazing day on the boat. NCL opened the bow of the boat for close viewing, provided blankets, and even had an expert on board to talk about the glaciers. Disembarkation was well organized even though there was a line/wait to get off the ship. Read Less

My favorite restaurant was the the night we saw the Cirque Dream Epicurean(cover charge applies) the food and entertainment superb. O’Sheehan’s is a must for the fish&chip and Burgers. The Taste and Manhattan restaurants has great ambiance. I recommend as many shore excursions as possible, they are well organized and provide a good overview of each country Visited. I didn’t visit Rome because I had been there before, But do recommend Sorrento and Naples, Monaco and the View from Eze and Palma in death. We chose this cruise because we wanted to go to Bar Harbor Maine. We like sailing out of New York City. We were on the ship by 11:45 am. The ship was completely full and many times this presented a problem. There was plenty to do on the ship with the entertainment being the best. I was happy that the casino had a non smoking section. The food at the restaurants was hit or miss. The only extra pay restaurant we went to was the Modeno and that was very good. The service was also so so. One things that really bothered me was because the ship was so crowed that people were waiting to get in the dining rooms and because of this, I felt like I was really rushed to finish my diner and leave. The other problem with the ship was the lines to get on the elevators. We had a balcony cabin that was kept very clean as was the rest of the ship. The week we were on the ship, Guy Harvey was on it with his daughter and they different types of presentations. He is the person that painted the hull of the ship. The Man of Choir show was the best show that we have seen on a cruise ship. We liked it so much that we saw it twice. We booked all four of our excursions with Norwegian and they were all good to very good. The cruise was not as good as an Alaskan cruise but I would still recommend it. Read Less

The best way to start a review is to ask, " would I do this trip again"? Answer is yes. We stayed 3 nights at the Hilton Stucky(prior to the cruise) and flew American Airlines Economy Plus- both I would do again also. We docked at 8 am and were in the airport by 9am-plenty of taxis to get to Marco Polo. We flew out at noon. Now some details on the cruise. We stayed in a suite and had priority status. Without the priority status, I don't thing we would have been as happy on the trip if we had to wait in the long lines to tender. 12030- no balcony, but lot's of room and good view. Restaurants-generally good or better with service somewhat slow at times Entertainment- pretty good except for the magician Room- clean, our steward was exceptional Beverage Package- I upgraded to the Premium Plus, not sure I would do again, as availability of the upgraded items were not always available at the bar we were at(Champagne and Woodford Bourbon) Ports- all were worth the trip, except Cofur. Agrostoli and Kotor were surprises. Any questions please reach out. Happy Sailings Read Less

I laugh when I read some of these reviews from various experiences had by passengers. As in life, you can't please everyone. I am not moking anyone, just making a point that a cruise full of people will have various experiences. About myself, I cruised several times on 3 other NCL ships and Princess before including the beautiful Escape last summer to Bermuda. I am a male, 52 and travel with my Lady. I should also mention I was on a casino at sea cruise meaning it was comped by my affiliation with a casino so isaved some money and caught some nice promo's including reduced air. I did my research prior to booking knowing it was still summer weather in early September so everyday was as anticipated. Simply gorgeous! Most kids were be back at school so it was an older crowd. The destinations were spectacular for a 7 day cruise and we took advantage at every port. A quick rundown of everything related... We had a midship balcony. It was clean and served it purpose. I don't cruise to stay inside but it's nice to hang on the balcony before dinner or catcha sunrise or sunset. Dining was overall pretty good. We went to several restaurants including the specialty ones. Buffet food is as expected, good for a quick bite and readily available. Getting on the ship was near perfection. I walked up at 3:30 and was on the ship 10 minutes later. They don't load the ship completely at this port and there was only another ship or 2 in the port. Getting off took a little longer but moved along. took about 20 minutes. Activities and Entertainment is what you would expect on a typical cruise today. There are a few standouts like the Beatles cover band playing in the Cavern bar. They really packed them in with this crowd of English and American folks reliving the live music of an iconic band. The Cirque show was also entertaining as well as Burn the floor. The headliner bar had fun shows and a very good violinist show. The cruise director and staff get things rolling at sea with the live shows. This ship has a spectacular gym at sea. Plenty of everything to keep the weight down. A full basketball court and waterpark type water slide was present and never too busy to enjoy. Chairs were available on deck and the quiet space up top was a greatfind. I never felt the 4000 plus passengers on this sold out cruise to be an issue. I did plan ahead for the specialty restaurants and ate in a different place each night. Public areas were kept clean for the most part. Some bathrooms needed a little more attention later in the evening after shows let out. The casino was humming nightly and the smoke wasn't an issue. In fact, they had a great cigar lounge that I used daily and purchased a few cigars from the ship when I didn't feel like running back to the room for my own. Elevators were busier as expected during peak times and disembarktion. A ship this size could use a 3rd set for sure. Service was good to excellent depending on where you are. The lounges and outside bars kept things moving. The dining areas at peak times were a little slower for drink service now and again but overall pretty good. We arrived a day earlier to take the edge off the long flight and experienced Barcelona in a very nice hotel by the beach. We hired a private guide to see Gaudi's work of 3 projects including the Sagrada Familia which is a must see from inside. We used the ships excursions for 2 days in Rome visiting the catacombs and the beautiful Cinque Terre, booked my own on another 2 in Naples seeing the Amalfi coast and tour of Nice, Eze, Monaco and Montecarlo and rented electric bikes in Mallorca which was a great deal at 26 Euro a piece. We rode 10-12 km each way along the beach on a nice bike trail and made several stops for pictures, lunch and Gelato. All Great experiences. All in all, it was an excellent experience with few complaints and we were pleasantly surprised. Read Less

I decided to take vacations the last moment (needed a break from a stressful work assignment) so once I decided on the destination, an Alaska cruise, I got what was still available so it wasn't really a thorough choice. Some other lines were selling out fast, the Norwegian Bliss still had a mini-suite (better accommodations were sold out) so I took it. This was my first cruise so I didn't know what to expect, but I was overall pleasantly surprised, with many ups, but also, there were a few downs. The good: the Norwegian Bliss is a very new ship, and it is tastefully decorated, with everything in top shape and working order. The service is unbelievable, with extremely friendly and helpful staff everywhere. We didn't have a single negative experience with the staff. We were impressed with how they were always willing to help, with a smile, and were very efficient, knowledgeable, and professional. The Norwegian Cruise Line must have an excellent training center for the staff! We felt pampered! Some of the food was surprisingly good. The La Cucina restaurant served one of the best Italian meals I've ever had, and I'm half-Italian (I'm a dual citizen of Italy and the United States), I know Italian cuisine very well. Food Republic was delicious with original items, very well-presented. Los Lobos was very tasty too, with Mexican food that benefits from a modern touch. The one meal we had at the complimentary Manhattan was excellent and almost as good as what we had in the paid specialty venues above. Breakfast at The Local was tasty and peaceful. The swimming pool area and the hot tubs were clean and pleasant, and never too crowded. The Observation Lounge is a very cool and relaxing space, and they have tasty snacks and a nice piano bar. I really enjoyed the cast of the musical Six (the other musical, Jersey Boys, I didn't attend because I had seen it already), and the Beatles cover band at The Cavern. A duo of Phillipino male pianist and female singer were excellent. The silent disco with earphones at the Social was cool. The bar that specializes in Mojitos was good too. The wine bar The Cellar was excellent, with very good tasting events, including lectures by a very knowledgeable sommelier. I've been studying and tasting wine for decades and still, he surprised me with some information that I didn't know. The stand-up comedians were very, very funny! My wife very much enjoyed the Spa. She had several treatments there, and found the staff to be competent, and with prices similar to what she pays elsewhere. I didn't frequent it. She also liked the Gym with Yoga and Aerobic classes. Gift shops were good; my wife gave me a beautiful Scuderia Ferrari watch and I gave her a nice necklace. These were both well-priced. Other guests were friendly, polite, and we had some nice conversations. Embarkation was easy and fast. Disembarkation, however, was rather slow, with long lines and long waiting times. The bad: The Norwegian Bliss, together with the similar Norwegian Joy, are two of the biggest ships in the business, and the elevators, 16 in total, were overwhelmed. Often, the elevators were full when they reached our deck, and we had to wait and wait for an opportunity to get in. This ship should have the double of the number of elevators they offer. It's a pity that obviously, this can't be changed. The architects should have planned it better: for a ship this size, add more elevators! Some of the food was rather mediocre. The two restaurants with the best reputation, Ocean Blue and Le Bistro, were paradoxically very weak. For example, I had a steak with five peppers at Le Bistro, and I had to abundantly add more pepper to get any flavor at all, and the meat was overcooked although I asked for medium rare. Again, I lived in Paris, France, for 5 years and I know French cuisine very well. Everything we had at Le Bistro was bland and a pale imitation of good French cooking. Ocean Blue was also rather unremarkable. We had better seafood in the other venues, as compared to this one that specializes in seafood. Weird. Two of the three main complimentary restaurants, Taste and Savor, were also very mediocre. The Garden Cafe serves a buffet, and the food there was rather unappealing as well, not to forget, it was very crowded and chaotic. A particular breakfast at Savor was almost disgusting, with a croissant with scrambled eggs that looked like it was microwaved, so mushy the croissant was, and Eggs Benedict that were pretty dry and chewy. Some of the live music was atrocious. First of all, the selection is geared towards Country and Pop, two genres I don't care for. There was absolutely no venue that played jazz. For a cruise line that is registered in the United States (as well as the Bahamas) and sails to and from mostly American cities (with the exception of Victoria, BC) with most guests being American, it is weird that they don't present at all the most quintessential American genre, jazz. I also enjoy classical music and there was none to be found. The blonde female pianist was terrible, often botching the musical lines. The rock band Blue 4, oh my God, they must be the worst I've ever heard! Slow, low energy, poor playing, and mediocre voices. I can't believe the cruise line can't find better musicians. As a matter of fact, in the talent show featuring members of the crew, there were two waiters who sang much better than most singers who were hired for the live music! It would be nice to have an indoor swimming pool for the cold weather. Apparently they do have one in The Haven, the upscale section of the ship, but it's only for the guests of that section, which was sold out when I booked my cruise. The shore excursions in general were expensive and not a good value. Some were enjoyable but others were rushed and confusing, including, it was hard to find the correct buses outside. Maybe it's the luck of the draw since there are so many options, but unfortunately some of the ones we picked weren't that great. We bought them from the cruise line website and later realized that the same excursions are offered elsewhere for much cheaper prices. Oh well, I guess next cruise I'll be smarter. A couple of them were good, though. The art auctions weren't good. We found most of the art being sold, to be very tacky. Funny enough, the one piece we liked inside the art venue, wasn't for sale; it was part of the permanent ship decor. So, overall, I'm pleased with the Norwegian Bliss, but I do think they need to hire better musicians, be a bit more even in terms of food quality, and it would be lovely to have more elevators and an indoor swimming pool, although these structural issues are set in stone and can't be changed. Received a promotional offer from a travel agency we have used before. We saw a lot of beautiful scenery. The Ports were fun but the stop in Victoria at 19:30 was a waste of time. Time would have been better spent staying longer in Ketchikan, which was too short. We spent 2 days seeing Seattle before the cruise which was nice. Transfer from hotel to airport to ship went smoothly. Enjoyed the amenities onboard the ship and the time in Glacier Bay was very nice. Best breakfast onboard was the buffet. Restaurant menu was very limited which is understandable on a week long cruise. Best dinner was in the Local. Other restaurants tried to make things too fancy with tiny portions.. Disembarkation was a very pleasant experience. We just tagged our bags and put them in the hallway the night before and the next time we saw the was a baggage claim in our hometown. They even had our boarding passes printed and delivered to our room so we could go straight to security and boarding. Read Less

We have never cruised in the past so we did not know what to expect or to compare. I don't know what everyone was complaining about. Nothing is perfect but the staff tried to do what ever they could to make it perfect for you. I made reservations before we left for all the specialty dining and shows so were did not have any issues with reservations. They tell you well in advance to make these reservations for if you didn't, then you missed you opportunity. Getting on and off the ship for excursions was seamless. You need to listen to what they tell you about getting off which most people did not and then you grumble and complain. Yes the elevators where crowded but over 3000 people are trying to move through the ship on 18 floors, but this was not an all day occurrence. It would only happen during the busy times such as getting on and off the ship. Out bed was very comfortable. It had a nice pad on it and the pillows were very soft and supportive. We had a balcony and really enjoyed except someone again was not following the rules and was smoking on the balcony and butts would land on ours along with the smell. We did excursions on all the ports so enjoyed that. Icy Straits was truly Alaska as far as I'm concerned. I didn't go to Alaska to purchase items from china or give my money to vendors that go from one port to another. If you would go into the town of Hoonah you might not find the fancy store fronts but talking to the local residents you would get the true Alaskan experience. That is why we went to Alaska, The specialty dinning we had was fabulous. You could find food anywhere you went. The Buffet was ok if you wanted something quick. My biggest complaint about the buffet was the rudeness of the people cutting in front of you to grab the food. I never knew what the hurry was as we were sailing and had no place to go. You are on vacation so take a chill pill for petes sake. Entertainment was fair to good. We are not no Broadway so I didn't expect Broadway shows. Footloose was like a High School musical but it entertained us. Elements was excellent. We couldn't see the Glaciers as it was to foggy, no fault of Norwegian. If something would have happened if we would have entered the area then people would have something to complain about. The staff was always attentive. Our housekeeper steward was wonderful. Would always greet us with a warm smile and hug. Jing jing made us feel very special. We enjoyed trying all the different drinks offered. I really had to complaints and we really enjoyed our vacation. Read Less

First time traveling on NCL we've done a few RC and last year a Costa. Always wanted to try NCL and this was the most brilliant itinerary. Ship was lovely and clean. We had an interior ocean view cabin biggest ocean view cabin we've ever had with lots of storage. Big shower, sink area and toilet. Food onboard was all very good. The pub was great with fantastic chicken wings, pastrami sandwiches, bangers and mash and America cheesecake. This place was great when you didn't want to go up to the buffet. We went during the school holidays so the ship was sailing at full capacity at times the service in the dining room could be very slow - they did have a lot of staff but at times felt like they needed more. That said the staff worked incredibly hard and were always very accommodating and great with the kids. The entertainment team were great, shows, magician and violinist. The entertainment team were energetic and fun during sessions of bingo and the white party and again interacting with the kids they always seemed to have time for everyone. In general the ship is very relaxed and you more or less wear what you want, we enjoy dressing up so did on a few occasions and didn't feel out of place at all. Ports were brilliant. A little short at times but with only a week we get that you can't be in a place all day. Unfortunately due to weather conditions we couldn't go to Mykonos which was really upsetting at the time. We did ask for compensation but they explained that it states in the contract If they can't dock due to weather conditions there is no compensation. We did on 3 occasions arrive at our port of call early giving us more time. The only negative I would say is the need for tender tickets. As everyone wanted to get off early people were queuing as early as 6.30 am to get the first tender tickets you need these for Montenegro, Santorini and Mykonos. That said they did escort you off the ship very quickly. With the exception to Montenegro where we were an hour late due to port difficulties. As NCL come in last at Santorini the cable car queue was not busy at all and we were up in no time, it's also great as you don't leave till 10pm at this port. It's the last ship to leave. If you are traveling during the summer holidays you do need to expect a lot of queuing: for tenders, restaurants on the ship and generally in the ports of call. We knew to expect this so went with a laid back attitude. But if you don't like the queues would recommend going out of school holidays. Our girls absolutely loved it and didn't want to leave. We didn't use the kids club but it looked great fun. Since the renovation they have obviously taken off the yellow slides and splash zone for the kids. Which we didn't know about, we were disppaointed when we boarded and noticed that it had gone. All in all a great fun ship with very good food and brilliant ports of call. We didn't take any excursions with NCL but arranged our own that would be more fun for the kids. We rented Harley Electric Scooters in Corfu and really got round the whole town and even found te locals beaches - we really saw a lot. For Santorini we rented a four seater Buggy which again was a lot of fun we saw a lot of the island Oía and Fira. In Argostoli we took a brilliant electric boat and cruised the lagoon spotted sea turtles. We walked the wall in Dubrovnik at 8am - completely worth it you see the whole of the old town with beautiful views. Then walked the old town. If we had more time we would have kayaked as well the water was beautiful. Everything we did was great fun and kept us as cool as possible considering it was August. It was a great family holiday with beautiful destinations. Would definitely sail NCL again. Read Less

Wanted to take a trip with adults only. We just came off of the Norwegian Escape for a summer vacation with our children and decided to do an adult only cruise twenty-two days later. This trip was probably too close together to appreciate it as much. The Breakaway was a good size ship with plenty of on-board activities to keep you busy. I recommend The Big Top Escape, Comedy Show, Deal or No Deal, Karaoke and Burn the Floor for on-board activities. The ship only seems a little crowded at initial sea day. Pool deck seats in the shade are hard to come by if you are trying to sit with groups of four or more. I found the ladies public restrooms to be a little deprived of cleanliness and fresh smell. I'm sure the next group of people will have a different experience as I know a deep cleaning was getting done after our disembarkation due to Hurricane Dorian. All other areas seemed to be well kept with over 4,000 people on board not cleaning up after themselves. We stayed in stateroom 8766, which was the floor with restaurants, shopping and bars. I was concerned about the smoking, noise level and traffic on these floors, but the noise and smoking was not a real issue and I'm a very light sleeper. Only when you got close to large Chandelier did smoking becoming a factor. The only thing was the stateroom doors slam very hard. I always tried to manually close the door to be courteous to my neighbors, but not everyone does that. The walls between staterooms are also very thin as you can hear some extracurricular activities going on...Our stateroom attendant (Michael) was fantastic. He kept our room clean and was always around if we needed him. The room was spacious for two and had a good amount of storage for clothing with extra storage in footrest. I wish the balcony area was a little bit deeper, but still ok. Shower was bigger than ones on other cruise lines. The bathroom also had shelving and multiple hooks for hanging items. There is a easy to use safe in closet and side reading lights beside bed with little tables on each side. In order for the power and lights to come on in the room you need to put any type of card in the slot right by your door entrance along the wall. NCL would like you to believe that only the cruise card will power the room, but any card will keep the lights on. Please note that Stateroom Attendant is required to remove it if you are not in your room (no biggie just don't expect anything to be charged when you come back if that was your intention when leaving the room). You will have to go back and put card back in after Stateroom Attendant is finished cleaning up. I loved The Martini, Maltings and Atrium bars. Most of the Bartenders were really friendly and made great drinks. They are on their feet the majority of day and night and do it with a smile. So tip them out (CASH ONLY as they don't get tips written in on receipts). Please remember to have a little patience when it's busy. Also, on day one of cruise they close down all bars around 30 minutes before ship drill. Things to note: Wear swimsuit under your clothes and use a back bag/beach bag to pack a change of clothes, medication, electronics, sunglasses, chargers and any other personal items you need, as you won't have immediate access to your luggage or stateroom. The Crew Members are the ones who drive NCL business. They are the ones that keep customers coming back. I notice they work a great deal of hours throughout the cruise. However, I'm not sure that their work discipline is rewarded, other than receiving the comment cards we write up. I would recommend including perks based on accolades provided via customer comment cards. Such rewards should include free wi-fi minutes, extra hours off, special request consideration, extra leave for special events (i.e. weddings, death, immediate family birthday, graduation, etc...). Honduras was a nice spot to venture out. Our driver Cruz Argentina gave us this information as we took a taxi ride over to West Bay, Roatan Islands. The taxi ride was $20 per person and an additional $15 to get a lounge chair with umbrella. The beach was nice and the bathrooms were clean. You could order food & drinks from the Argentina Bar. Your driver waits for you and takes you back to port when you are ready. I would suggest that you offer your driver a tip or food & drink as well. Our driver said that Honduras schools always appreciates if tourist brings pencils/pens for students on the Islands. There is always a need for these school items. Belize is NCL's private island with shops. They also had zip lining & wildlife sanctuary you could walk through. I could've passed on this stop. The only reason to get off is to shop for souvenirs (the t-shirts were low quality there). Because of light winds we were not allowed to put up umbrellas and shaded spots were very limited. Pretty much every seat was taken. So finding a spot out there for even two people seating together was almost impossible. Also wanted to get my passport stamped and couldn't get it done here, as the immigration person was not obligated to be there :-( Costa Maya was a nice Island. As soon as you get off the Island there's a pool, music, lounge chairs and plenty of shopping. I believe you can swim with dolphins right there. It was crowded by the pool by the time we got off the ship, so we took a $8 taxi cab ride (around 8 minutes) over to 40 Canones and paid a minimum $20 drink/food order per person for access to beach side lounge chair with shade for a few hours. Cozumel was very hot this time of year. There is an open mall as soon as you get off the ship. You have to walk about five blocks to the right of mall to find information stand, where you can get your passport stamped (it's right by a 7-eleven). There are plenty of restaurants, cigar, liquor and souvenir shops to explore. Stay hydrated if you plan on walking around here. I think I got heat stroke from walking around Cozumel. Lastly, our ship was at sea while Hurricane Dorian was brewing. The communication during this time was not great. We found out when we were in Costa Maya that the Captain was in communication with multiple areas to figure out our ships next course of action. It seemed that skipping the final stop in Cozumel was most logical. However, we continued on to Cozumel. The Captain was waiting for further information regarding heading back to Port of Miami. On Friday August 30th before disembarkation in Cozumel, the Captain advised us to be back on ship no later than 4am August 31st. At this point people were leaving with suitcases trying to get flights out of Cancun, Mexico. At around 1pm on August 30th the Captain said that we received the all clear to head back to the Port of Miami and we were just waiting for those who were still not on board to head out. Unfortunately, many people were under the impression we didn't have to be back to the ship until 4am the next morning. Therefore, we had to wait for the remaining people that did not show back on ship until around 11pm. At that time the Captain was hauling towards Port of Miami. The next communication was when we were around Marathon, FL to say that there was a tropical storm warning in Florida and the Port of Miami would be closing at 10pm. This means we would not make it to Port of Miami in time. We missed our window to get back on dry land. Chaos ensued and the deck 6 was filled with pissed off people. Although the communication was slow and disorganized, ultimately NCL did a great job of getting people home. Any one who had booked/traveled by plane through NCL, booked air through 3rd party or drove to port fill out forms. This was to make arrangements for everyone to get back to their final destination. People who booked air travel through NCL was automatically put on the next available flights home, 3rd party bookings had to make their own arrangements and were offered a $300 credit per person (they needed to save receipts and submit for reimbursement). People who drove and parked in Miami got on chartered flights back to Miami, where they were met by buses to the Port of Miami. Anyone who used an outside park-n-ride was not able to get onto those chartered buses as the Port of Miami was not officially opened and was only excepting the chartered buses. Therefore, we had to call an Uber to get back to parking garage we used. All-in-all I think NCL really stepped up and got things taken care of. I believe that the people who are complaining were those that tried to take a proactive approach and make arrangements before seeing what NCL was going to offer. They came out of pocket because they didn't wait for instructions. Every change they made on flights cost them money that they couldn't get back for the changes they made. This was all based on the announcements made by the Captain. However, if they would have waited to find out how NCL was going to rectify the situation, they wouldn't have been out of some much money. Ultimately, we got an extra two days of vacation and made it back home safely. I would cruise with NCL again. Read Less

Enjoyed all of the music everywhere-nice touch. GREAT comedy shows, top notch stand up professionals, and plenty of performances! Rowan, the washy-washy singer was delightful. Sadly, the quality of the food in the cafe and the main dining rooms really plummeted. We could be wrong, but it sure tastes like many or all of the entree's, especially the FISH was pre-cooked and then re-heated. Very dry and salty, all of it. Not one good fish dish the entire trip and NO lobster ever. The desserts tasted like they were full of preservatives too, like they were also pre-made, frozen, thawed then served. They just didn't have that fresh flavor, more like Jewel bakery quality. We thought that the cruise directors did a great job with all of the activities and everyone around the ship was so nice. Our balcony room felt spacious. The room steward was super. Only thing was that the carpet in our cabin was quite dirty, looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Wished that there was options for late night dining. Lots of things still going on late into the eve, but the cafe shuts down on some nights around 11:00 and the only option is O'Sheehans-a sit down place with a long line down the halls, and an extremely long wait, or room service at an extra fee. Come on NCL, if you are going to offer late night entertainment, keep the cafe at least partially open. Embarkation & dis-embarkation were very smooth! Read Less
