I chose the cruise because it departs from Vancouver from our home town, cost is extremely high for what's it's worth. Wifi is expensive and unreliable, dining room and buffet menu selection is poor and limited and almost all meat is overcooked, sitting area is also limited and spread out, only one section of buffet, if you can't find a table close by (which most likely is occupied), you have to walked three blocks to get to the food station, very poor design, should at least put the buffet in the center, only a few items of food with displayed with limited selection and quantity. Hot noodles was served with three to four string of noodles (why bother) almost all customers asks for 3-4 portions Salad varieties is so terrible and only couple of bottle thousand island and French dressing Fruit varieties is poor and limited. mostly not quite ready, maybe worry they would go bad? I lost weight at the cruise by doing and eating nothing. I feel totally ripped off and no one anywhere to complain We were denied access to the theatre because I was pushing a stroller, claimed that the hall is full and yet they allowed someone else to walk in and invite them to stand at the back. This is my third time to cruise with Norwegian and it was the worst experience ever, I couldn’t find anything positive about my 7-Day Western Mediterranean from Barcelona trip. The staffs were not friendly, food choices were limited and taste was below average, nothing to do on the ship and the room set up was lock of common sense, for example, they put a sink on outside table so when u use the sink, it was very easy to splash water all over the counter. The TV set was on the top shelf so u had to raise your head to watch tv, after awhile, your neck hurts. The shore excursions were very expensive, we paid $160 p.p. just for the transportation between the port and going to Rome. It was a very expensive cruise because we also had to fly from L.A. to Barcelona and stay at the hotel to get ready, we would NEVER do any European cruise again. It was a huge disappointment and we will are done with Norwegian as well. Read Less

I have been on 5 cruises previously with 4 different cruiselines (including Disney, Princess, and Royal Carribean). My experience on Norwegian Gem was by far the worst. 1. The stateroom is poorly designed, with no outlets near the head of the bed. Family members with CPAP machines had to run extension cords across the entire room to be able to use their medical device. 2. Stateroom did not seem fully stocked. I found out halfway through the cruise that hand/body lotion is readily available but was never stocked in my room for no clear reason. 3. The food was one of the biggest disappointments. Many dishes came out cold, and the portions for the appetizers are laughable. The food taste was mediocre at best. In particular, the quality of the food at Orchid Garden is not tasty at all. The buffet has poor variety. Despite having a large space, each food station is duplicated, so there is really only half the selection. And attempts at cost-saving were obvious... other cruises have smoked salmon, and this cruise had salmon spread. The tikka masala was always some vegetable rather than chicken. Just a few examples. 4. Having to tender to ports is terrible, and I left with the sense that my cruise experience was diminished due to cost-saving decisions by the cruiseline. 2 ports were cancelled due to weather preventing safe use of tender boats, but other cruise boats were able to dock at those ports on the same day as their cruiselines booked the pier rather than resorting to using tender boats. At one of the ports we actually made it to, delays in the tendering process led to our group having to wait 3.5 hours after our arrival time to actually make it onto a tender boat, so the time available to actually enjoy the port was lessened. 5. When ports were canceled due to weather, the cruise staff revised the activity options. But all I could see were more sales and charged activities (wine/whisky tastings). It's bad enough to miss out on a port, but then to have the cruiseline only open up activities that you have to pay more for is ridiculous. 6. My cruise benefit was to save $50 per port on shore excursions, and I was unable to use that benefit as half the ports were canceled. I had unused "non-refundable" credit that I asked be applied to the service charge since I was unable to use it on a shore excursion, and I was told that wasn't allowed. If a port is canceled, I would hope the cruiseline would go out of their way to try and improve the experience rather than make it more frustrating. 7. The cruise staff was overall friendly but one staff member (female cruise staff member from USA) was rude. She was managing elevator use while it was restricted for 4 hours due to tender boats. 8. The layout of the boat is poorly planned. With disabled members in our party, it was frustrating to have to take elevators up to a certain floor to walk across the boat and then take another elevator down to get to the main dining hall (which is a location we needed to get to 1-2x every day). Boarding the Norwegian Sky felt like I was visiting a prison. Everyone was very serious and not friendly. It took away the excitement you feel when going on vacation. Hospitality and customer service is what vacation hosting is all about. Norwegian fell very flat in this arena. The food could not be worse. This was my first Norwegian cruise and I will sail Carnival any day over going back to Norwegian. The food seemed old and reheated. Very poor quality. Specialty dining was over priced and terrible at Cagney's. Le Bistro was the only exception. The food was EXCELLENT and the staff was beyond AMAZING. Although the Norwegian Sky is extremely old and dated, the ship was fairly clean, which is important to us. However, the cabin was so small. Our toilet overflowed and wet our carpet. Our room steward got us a carpet blower and cleaned it all up. But we felt someone could have come and apologized about the whole ordeal and perhaps offered to move us to another room, as the smell was terrible for our last night. I do not recommend this cruise line or this ship. Happy cruising to all on another cruise line!! Read Less

Awful experience! I had my body covered in bedbug bites two days after getting on the boat! It ruined my holidays! They downgraded us to a different room which by the way they said it had also been cleaned off bedbugs! They washed my clothes and ruined quite a few of them! They said they had to spray our shoes and sent them all back in our suitcases all together in a ball without any care! I couldn’t sleep for 3 nights as my body was extremely itchy. I couldn’t take any photos as my body was covered in bites. I had to keep wearing the same clothes as I couldn’t wear clothes that showed my shoulders because of all the bites. It was an absolute disaster! I reported it to NCL and have heard nothing back yet. I would not recommend this ship to anyone unless I was shown a bedbug free certification from Pest Control. I chose this cruise due to the commercialization I had seen. It is nothing but a nightmare with small pools that had so many people you couldn’t move in it. In size they must have been maybe 20 x 20 (if that). The buffet was terrible the bacon and the meats were full of fat not drained and climbed down on a large metal tray for you to pick out with prongs. The meatballs they served was soy bean, like rubber balls. Most of the food is eaten barely half and look around all the people are throwing half the food away in the garbage. The Stewart was fair although nothing really significant in his service. The price of this cruise was outrageous, almost $1300 apiece just for a balcony room. I imagine the Cove Haven part of the ship upstairs was much better than the average reservations. ( at least I hope so. ) You had to pay for every little thing, even a bottle of water. You had no choice but to pay the outrageous price for the water and my girlfriend had one drink, a margarita, it cost $15. In sum, for the price I paid I would not recommend this to anyone, maybe half the price I paid I would consider it. Read Less

As a regular cruiser we have sailed on several ships in Royal, Carnival, and Norwegian. So this is not only a comparison to other companies but even within the same fleet. So let's begin with the ship. The Sun is an older ship, so we knew it would not have all the activities as the newer larger ships, but did not expect was certain parts of the ship including our room had a consistent smell of sewage. This was prevalent from the moment we stepped in on level 5 through our current sailing as I write this on to New Orleans due to the hurricane. More on that later. State rooms, again in addition to the smell, they are so understaffed that they don't even make the towel animals. Now this is not a big deal, but there are no details on anything. You are getting the bare-bones basics, don't expect anything else. Furthermore, beach towels, we had to constantly ask for them, our porter would not leave any in our room though we got an initial set and instructed to leave in our bathroom the dirty ones to get new ones. Restaurants, on this cruise we planned to just eat with included location as we have sailed and enjoyed the other options. Let me say bad choice... the food is blah at best. Most meals were tasteless, the soups tasted like they came from a can. The buffet food was just to fill you up, but not flavorful. In the Seven Seas dining room we did have an amazing waiter which we ensured to have every evening Lief James is amazing and went out of his way to give amazing service. He learned our wine preference and would just asked if we wanted our usual. But the food overall was okay, the best thing we had was the honey creme brulee but most of the other meals were just okay at best. Sports Bar, in most other shops the sports bar run 24/7 but not on the Sun, you gotta wait till 5:30pm. It does stay open till 5:30am, but if you want wings for lunch, tough luck. Bars, are okay. They really liquor up the drinks. But about half the bar staff are so rude, especially in the pool area. There was one Peruvian bartender who was funny and very nice to everyone but can't say the same about the rest of the pool bar staff. Activities, though their shows in the theatre were great, the rest of the ship activities are lacking. So the Cruise Director was MIA most of the time, had the personality of a shoe and shouldn't be directing activities at a daycare, little less a cruise ship. I spoke to many of the bands on board as they were pretty good, but it seemed their schedules were off, when I asked this director was new and changed it, so rather than having their top dance/party band playing the club to get people dancing, they would have them play an acoustic set in the atrium. Now about our storm experience... We were on another NCL ship when hurricane Maria went to South Florida and though a stressful experience, the ships staff on the Sky were amazing about getting information out... On this ship it has been a super horrible experience, each staff member you ask, you get different information. The Capt and Cruise Dir have been putting out bits of information and leaving much to speculation and creating havoc. Even worse, we were not allowed to cancel our cruise beforehand, only went to Cozumel though part of our charges included port charges for 3 ports, and no mention of credits or discounts on future cruises, which had been done previously. This specific part is on NCL and not the ship. As I mentioned before, my family and I have taken at least 6 other cruises on both NCL and other lines, this is the worst yet. If you are set to go on the Sun, I highly recommend recommend going on another ship. Read Less

We wanted a cruise experience and the Bahamas. We sadly were disappointed with Hurricane Dorian. We had travel insurance but our travel agent suggested we go cause NCL made no changes to the itinerary yet the night before. We decided to go and not cancel cause we expected at worst we would reroute to 3 other ports. One day was not enough notice to cancel everything we had set up to go even with Hurricane issues we expected we still have fun. Well 1 day in Mexico in Cozumel and a half day was nowhere near what we had in mind nor worth the cost we payed for Bahamas. Esp since My husband had been once with his parents as a teen. . The food was awful no selection for a picky eater. The specialty restaurants were lacking majorly. The buffets were edible if drunk. Same stuff daily almost, sadly not much choice. Not usually a drinker but between all the disappointments. Thankfully it was inclusive drinks....... The pool being closed 50% of time, hot tub packed and the streaming package I paid for not working after day one. I lost business not being able to use my phone and check in on work i lost a few big investors, the 10$ line was a joke. The excursion booking by phone app accidental, we couldn't get refunded. Guest services were no help anytime we went there. They didn't cancel our trip or give any info prior to boarding that we go to Cozumel... My husband had been there and I had no wish to go there, but we had boarded the boat and didn't get any info to were we reroute until another cruiser told us on the ship not even our itinerary told us till the next day. Very disappointed to say the least the have no offered any discount on a trip to the Bahamas or a partial refund! I know that Mexico is way cheaper to visit then the Bahamas and we didn't port 3 different places Nor did i even get to see the beach once. We did one excursion dolphin encounter, it was the only thing decent and we didn't receive our photos by email as we should've. They had switched our group with another's they couldn't find our photos, when tried to look and purchase them. They finally found them under a different groups number! We bought them and it was a week later I had to contact them to send them again. Overall we had a trip we will never forget and we hope to make it to the Bahamas when the poor island rebuilds. Not sure I will be going NCL We almost booked Disney even though, we don't have kids. They had 11 pools and 3 adult areas and pools. We may have at least got some swimming pool time and hot tub time while stuck on the boat for 6 days when supposed be 4 days. The nightmare getting home was another story very disappointed about the lack of updating and knowledge they never provided us during the chaos. The sun would've been fine had we ported 3 days where we planned. we could've dealt with the other issues, we had in general but honestly for our first cruise nothing went right! Room tenant was awesome remembered our names was very diligent and professional. The gift shop was pathetic and the Spa was overpriced for the deep tissue couples massage we received. I wasn't even sore afterwards as should be. Not impressed at all. We are smokers it was windy and raining off and on they only moved smoking down a level one time to keep the wind and rain less awful. We had a balcony and this was honestly the best part of the boat. However we were under the pool area, it was very loud as they picked the chairs up and sprayed the upper deck barley got any sleep! Worst cruise line ever! From the very beginning... we had a leaking pipe in our room that made the carpet soaking wet and the room smelt like mildew. They told us there was nothing they could do because they were fully booked. After going to guest services 3 times at 6:30 pm they finally moved our room. Our cruise to the Bahamas was changed the day we set sail. We were suppose to go to 3 different islands in the Bahamas (why I chose this cruise line) and we ended up doing majority at sea and one island in Mexico. So the cruise was extended by a day so 3 days at sea and 2 days at Cozumel, Mexico. Very disappointing... We were double charged for the internet package $155 that is still to this day not resolved (I stood in line at guest services 3 times the day of disembarkation trying to resolve). And just to top it all off they dropped us off in New Orleans and we had to figure out how to get home back to FL. No up front compensation... we had to submit receipts after the fact to be reimbursed up to $300 per person for “travel” only. Save your money and use a different cruise line. Read Less

I spoke with the activities director about my concerns, he was very apologetic. He listened and I believe he spoke to the person in charge of that particular event and we since the change in the activity. The food was not the best, the buffets food was always warm or just cold everyday!! The specialty dining was excellent at every restaurant we ate at!!. All in all the trip was just very disappointing to have your children same their bored, it was very disheartening to hear and see. I would not recommend the escape for a FAMILY VACATION! My family ages are 27,24, & 17! And they just didn’t have enough entertainment across the board to accommodate all different age groups and cultures. Read Less

I got off the Norwegian Sun today after a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas with my mom. Are you ready for this tale? After boarding on the first day, nothing was open and the rooms weren't ready. When we went to the room, we were given a single bed even though we booked a double beds. We feared my mother's luggage was lost, since it was several hours without it at the room. I spoke with another guest who said that his luggage was put on the wrong ship. We tried to call our room attendant "Brianna", but the number was a busy signal. We called Guest Services, but the number was also busy. The luggage finally arrived around 9 PM while we were eating what tasted like frozen food or bad airplane food in the main dining hall. We then met our real room attendant who explained that the number didn't work because "she went home today on vacation." Not sure why they couldn't replace the card with the correct attendant's name and number? Shortly after eating/drinking on the ship, we would get horrible cramps. We did not know the cause until after looking up the symptoms on the internet today (the cruise charged $35 per device each day for WiFi) that we had contracted THE NOROVIRUS! Why did we contract the Norovirus? "Washy Washy" was not everywhere on the ship and we watched the workers clean the tables without gloves and without disinfectant. The ship was dirty and we saw crumbs on the floor and on the tables everywhere. The tables were cleaned with wet rags and food everywhere was not bussed. So much so, that seagulls would have feasts on the deck outside on the questionable food no one seemed to enjoy. Comfortable sleep did not happen because we didn't have working AC the entire trip. We called maintenance the first night to fix the AC, but there still was no cold air circulating in our room. We would feel cold air while passing other guests' rooms and in other parts of the ship. The repair man explained that the coldest our room was allowed to get is 73 degrees and the ship utilizes "chilled recycled ocean water." However, 73 degrees would have been tolerable unlike the 80 degree room that we had. We were sweating laying on top of the covers every night tossing and turning. Everytime we reached out to Guest Services, a person who could not understand English very well would get confused and tell us everything was fine. To make matters worse, our toliet would not flush and the sink constantly made a loud gurgling sound. The toliet was fixed a total of 4 times and the AC was "fixed" about the same amount if not more. The bathroom smelled of rank sewage, so we had to constantly spray hair spray in there to not gag every time we had to enter. The shower was also repaired twice, since only scalding hot water came out. We spoke with 4 other guests that claimed their room FLOODED! The toliet and shower eventually worked on the last day of the trip, but the AC never worked. We are leaving the trip completely exausted (and sick). The entertainment on the ship was beyond cheesy and usually involved the ship begging for more money. The ship's shops were desperate money grabs, much like the $5.50 bottle of Aquafina placed in our room to "tempt" us. The food was subpar and every meal oredered was taking a chance. During one dinner, I ordered French Onion soup because I thought how can you mess that up? Much to my suprise, that was bad too. The soup tasted like only beef stock and had no flavors of onion, salt, or bouillon. The ship also kept trying to pass off certain foods as gourmet. For example, one appetizer on the menu was "cream cheese and crab stuffed wonton with a sweet chilli sauce". Isn't that called, "crab rangoon"? We noticed a lot of interesting menu items that we believed to be recycled leftovers from other meals like adding bacon to sauerkraut. We picked snorkeling/beach day for our excursion in Freeport, Bahamas which came be to around $150. When we arrived to get on the bus for the excursion, we were informed that the snorkeling was canceled due to weather. The ship did not inform us earlier of this and instead loaded up a tour bus full of guests whom we suspect were charged the full amount for a 15 minute shuttle to the beach. Instead, we went back to the ship and asked for a refund. We then caught a taxi which only came to $14 for both of us. The White Party/Glow Party was held from 10:30 PM-12:00 AM the night before a port of call was 7 AM. The party took place by the pool deck and it was raining. The workers were squeegeeing the deck and the DJ was trying to get the crowd to come out from hiding from the rain. After the rain stopped, the crowd came out to dance and consisted mainly of small children. The DJ played EDM music for a bit, then switched to explicit rap much to the horror of the parents in attendance. They had a twerk contest on the stage and parents were taking their children to leave. A woman with a see through dress and a thong on got in the splits and began dancing like a stripper on the stage for everyone to see, kids and adults alike. There were other people on stage dancing that kept it clean, but she had to be pulled off stage because she was showing her buttcrack/vagina. There looked to be children watching as young as 5-12 years old. The DJ was blasting Cardi B songs and asked the crowd of kids to sing along to the explicitly laced lyrics. I left after that, since I had no interest in twerking around little kids. Small things such as crew members not knowing guests' names, no towel animals, and no drinks being served by the beach chairs were also a disappointment. We cruised with NCL in 2015 and had a fantastic time, so we suspect there must have been a restructuring within management. The cruise reaked of budget cuts and corporate greed. We suspect that the workers were paid very little and we were told that they rarely get to go home to their families in their home countries. Sorry if this was too much to read, but I did not want to spare any of the details. I posted this on NCL's Facebook page, but it was taken down by the moderators (suprise). Read Less

The boat was overcrowded and not enough staff to attend to everyone. Since gratuities were suppose to be paid all upfront they did not have to work hard to get people there food or drinks, I waited 20-30 min for drinks and at dinner took 2hrs. at least. But then once you are on the boat they hit you with a 15$per person per day charge for someone to make up your room. If you want decent food you have to go to the specialty restaurant and pay for it. The adult pool was so small and way overcrowded. They had another adult pool but it had limited spots and fee was 210 per person for the week. The Spa was a nice facility. So one would think that after you pay for an overpriced massage you can use the rest of the amenities there but No that's an extra fee too. So be wary when you think you have an all inclusive they are so many hidden fees. Also the shows sucked, Royal Caribbean is such a better cruise line. Read Less

You could smell it 2 floors down in the dining area. The staff on the ship were not educated on events and where to go many times we asked. We have cruises many times and this was probably the most disappointing cruise we have ever been on. Our cabin was nice and we enjoyed having a balcony but when we tried to sit out there the people in cabin 8051 were smoking. We were not told this ship allowed smoking or we would not have scheduled a cruise in this ship. The staff when we got off the ship in customs were very rude to everyone getting off of the ship. The quality of the crew, their attentiveness and professionalism was far lacking. It was apparent they did not care to be on the ship. From boarding to disboarding the overall attitude toward passengers made me wish I was not there. The quality of the food was horrendous, soups had no whole ingredients and were clearly powdered. I myself was sick the entire trip! The setup on ship was a detriment to anyone not there with a whole family as they corralled guests into areas such as Skyline for evening parties (an area much too small for all guests) and then closed the only place to get a drink when passengers engaged in fighting due to the cramped conditions. The adult only pools/ hot tubs were nearly never enforced! I never got to enjoy the pool/ hot tub areas due to an excess of children present at all times splashing and screaming. When I put forth the money to get a spa experience in hopes of some kind of relaxation I was shorted the whole service (tip to toe) including a collagen eye treatment I never received even after asking about completing the service. It was nearly impossible to find a quiet space or other singles on the ship. I spent more money on this cruise than my last and am utterly shocked by my experience with Norwegian as a whole. No kind of vacation I would choose for myself again. Read Less

My husband won a cruise from the casino. My husband play the tables and is very good at it. Our family call it his part time job, however he calls it fun. We cruise every other year on Royal Caribbean and when we received the cruise as a gift we took a chance. First we upgraded the room etc. which cost over $2500.00. I cant live in an interior room on any cruise line. We left from New york $300.00 pier parking arrived @ 10 am. The pier was packed because of other events which was an inconvenience because we were left to look for other parking garages. None the less we were excited to get away. The Dawn was filthy, unable to capture the views because the windows were dirty/cloudy etc. The toilets kept getting backed up. The casino had no air condition, can you imagine smoke and no air. The crew didn't provide any pleasantries. The crew didn't thank you, smile and the dining room staff including the specialty restaurants were RUDE. The entertainment I would give 1 star same group of people doing something. The ship doesn't have many activities, trivia hosted by people who barely spoke English. There's nothing to do on the ship, not a slide, hang glide, bumper car, Broadway show. They have 1 pool for over 20000 guest which is deceptive in depth, too deep. The pool claim to be 6ft well over, my husband is 6'3 water well over his head. I couldn't wait to get off of this ship. Their private island is awful nothing to do there except to look at Royal Caribbean Island which had a slide and plenty of activities. I was so disappointed when we took our shore excursion to Atlantis we started to cut our losses and stay at Atlantis and fly back to New york and get our car. The bed was slat with a dip in it, mattress need to be replaced. I had to keep calling to housekeeping to have someone change the sheets. Read Less

Everyone talks about how awesome cruises are. On Norwegian I had just the opposite experience. To start I was pleasantly surprised by the quickness of boarding the ship that was awesome. In heading to my room on the 10th floor upon opening the elevator I was startled by the smell of raw sewage. To be honest if I wanted to smell raw sewage I’ll go get a job at the local water treatment plant. This smell never went away the whole cruise. It then became everywhere I went even on the top pool deck. It’s a good thing this cruise is unlimited drinks because it made this some what bearable. After getting to Cuba I really enjoyed the quickness of boarding on and off the boat. I loved getting to hang out there away from the septic tank called “Norwegian Sky”. After getting back on the boat and enjoying some fair food at the buffet we headed for bed. Our room was located just next to a room labeled “pool maintenance”. I’m not sure if you have ever had the cops come kick your door down in the middle of the night but that is what that room sounded like at all hours of the night making sleeping properly a chore. I was left tired throughout most of the cruise. That was really a big disappointment. How can you relax on vacation without even being able to sleep. The adults pool was also closed for a day and a half during this time which seemed ridiculous. So after leaving Cuba I got some cool pics from the back of the boat of the harbor which was cool. It made me wonder though why on most of the decks there is limited views due to dirty windows that extend all the way up. I thought being on the water on a cruise I would get some better views. Headed off to the Bahamas turned the pool deck into a party which was cool if there was enough pool space to entertain the whole party. The pool that day went from clear to yellow by the afternoon which is why I stayed clear of taking a dip in. I also thought the entertainment by the pool was super cheesy most of the day. I was informed by the lifeguard that this was the only cruise ship you can’t have a drink near the pool which I thought was rediculous. I couldn’t even sit in the edge of the pool with a beer. I did like the reggae banned that played though they were great. I did like the bartenders at the pool deck too. In getting to the Bahamas I was looking forward to stretching my legs and getting away from the septic tank. We then found out that that we weren’t going to make that stop which is a total let down. I was informed it’s pretty common for this maybe 1/3 of the time. I think that’s a bit higher than it should be. So back to sea brought another busy day probably busiest day yet on the pool deck. Today I was just ready to be back home and away from the septic tank so I decided to not drink any alcohol and drink water that was located on the bar in a huge jug. I am not sure how they fill this but I think it made me sick. I was deathly ill by the time we made it to Miami. I am still recovering from being sick and missing already 2 days of work. So we made reservations the night before at the palace which a pretty limited menu. I thought my steak was over cooked and sub par. This night we decided to try the crossings which had the exact same menu. Why not call it the same restaurant if it’s literally the same menu. Again I was let down. After getting to Miami I was surprised again by u loading times and speed. Thank god because it was the worst vacation I have ever had and take 5-6 a year for last 25 years. Overall I have mostly nothing but bad things to say for the cruise ship. I don’t know if this was the worst renovation I have ever seen on a boat that just needs to be retired and put back in the dry dock to be brought to the scrap yard. This experience on the boat has left a sour taste in my mouth about cruises. I am tempted to try another cruise line due to all my friends raving about them but I honestly don’t know if I can take another step on a septic tank or know if they all are septic tanks on the ocean. This experience I rated as poor because the cons greatly out way the pros in this ship. I would beware to anyone booking a cruise on the “Norwegian Sky”. Read Less

We have been on several cruises from Carnival, Royal Carribean, and Disney Cruise Line. We have spent as little as $200 to as much as $1,000 per person on cruises. Before leaving we made sure we dotted all our “I’s” and crossed all of our “t’s” as far as passport and visas go. My husband has dual citizenship (Brazilian, and American) and his American passport was expired so we made sure that we could leave the country and come back with his Brazilian passport and naturalization certificate. We called a total of six times to the port and NCL to make sure we were good to cruise with those documents. Both the port of Canaveral and NCL customer services assured us that we were good to go with those documents. On May 20th we were ready to go (so we thought)…. We arrived at the port and the lady that was taking care of us seemed a little confused. Her name was Miranda. She was a very sweet lady however didn’t really know how to input our information etc… She asked a very nice lady (I’m assuming a manager) and the lady said our documents were fine etc…. Miranda continued to be confused as she had other questions so another manager by the name of David Johnson came to us and immediately urged us to go to the managers desk. We gladly went assuming that he would help us and expedite our check in. We reach the managers desk and another lady by the name of Kathleen Bianchi kept asking us if we could go home and get his “American passport”. We explained that it was expired and that we called six times to make sure we could travel with the Brazilian passport blah blah blah….. She insisted on us giving her names of people that we spoke to which we didn’t have. In the mean time Mr. David made copies of all of our paperwork and asked me bluntly, “Mam, I need to know if you will be boarding today without your husband?”. I was in shock!!!! I didn’t even know that it was a possibility that my husband couldn’t get on the boat. They NEVER apologized and acted in any way sorry for what was happening to us. There were NO lamentable feelings from them AT ALL…. We remained calm and very politely asked them to please check with immigration because we knew that we were ok to travel to Cuba with his Brazilian passport. Mr. David said it wasn’t “his job” to make sure of anything. It was “our” duty to ensure we had the appropriate paperwork. In the meantime, I advised my husband to call the duty officer at “custom and border patrol” (located downstairs from where we were). We called and spoke to officer Dusan who assured us that we were good to travel with the documents we had. He even advised us to ask Mr. David to look up the website page where it specifies the necessary documents. Again Mr. David refused. At this point Im done. Im thinking we’re not going to board and we should have just cancelled our cruise. My husband saw the young manager that initially helped us going to the bathroom. He ran to wait for her outside the ladies bathroom so that when she came out he explained our situation. She quickly spoke with Kathleen (whom at this point felt she could do something to help us) both ladies went downstairs and within FIVE minutes came back with the okay for us to board. O.K…… at this point, 3 hours later, I am exhausted, but relieved! Now it was time to enjoy our very much-needed vacation. We purchased our cruise for $1,546.18 (for two). We had done a Disney cruise a couple months prior for about the same price. I mention that because we expected this to be just as nice as the Disney Cruise. To our dismay…. It WASN’T!!!! We went to customer service every single day asking for the gift that our travel agent bought us and they denied the gift. Customer service kept saying the gift was never purchased and we needed proof. Unfortunately we didn’t snap a picture of the “proof” so we never received our gift. NO biggie….. Then, we purchased the water bottle package on our second day of the cruise. We only received it on the last day of our cruise. Everyday, I would walk to the bar and remind them that we didn’t get our water bottles and they kept saying it was on the way but we only got it the last day. When we looked up our cruise there was a deal going on that we had an option to receive one out of five perks for free. Since this was an open bar cruise, we decided to opt for free wifi. Again, customer service looked me in the eye and said we were not eligible for the free perk since we paid the cheapest rate for our cruise. Cheapest rate??? Really???? I didn’t think that almost $800 per person was the cheapest rate for a cruise. Oh…. Since this was an open bar cruise the service at the bar was horrible to say the least. I wont even get into those details. Food was “okay”… hit or miss. I was given a butter knife to cut through a steak that was super chewy and inedible. Server never checked back after food was served. Buffet food was disgusting. We ate at the buffet just once and couldn’t even go back because it was gross. I NEVER fill out surveys, I NEVER give bad reviews… I just don’t have the time to do it. However, the rollercoaster of feelings that occurred before we even boarded was so disheartening that I couldn’t let this go without saying something. It’s interesting that in the end, Kathleen (one of the managers) said this to us, “you know, in hindsight, I regret not taking 5 minutes of my time to go downstairs and gather the correct information for you guys”. That’s my whole point in writing this review! It would have all been a very different story if they had only taken 5 MINUTES of their “clock time” to make sure there was nothing that could have been done for us. We are hard working middle class people that was looking forward to a little getaway, and without any regards for us, NCL was quick to deny our cruise and never even offered any remuneration of any kind. For the reasons stated above, I would NEVER suggest anyone getting on the Norwegian cruise line…. EVER….. and I am writing this in hope that this never happens to anyone else. If we had “given up” we would have been out of luck. We would not have boarded and we would have lost our money. Read Less

Went on the Alaskan cruise on the newly refurbished Norwegian Joy. The ship has a very modern interior and from the first glance appears to be great. However, their lack of attention started to show quickly after embarkment. The biggest issue I had was the width of the hallways by the staterooms. Some floors, if you had gotten off in the wrong set of elevators, required you to walk through the stateroom hallways. This would be okay if the hallways were large enough to permit a wheelchair or walker, which in the Joy’s case they were not particularly when the housekeeping’s carts were scattered every forty feet. In the main areas the doors opened via a touch panel. I failed to see any consistent placement of these panels even on the double entry doors. There was some cool extras like go karts, mini golf, and laser tag. Unfortunately, there were no elevators to these floors making it difficult to accommodate parties with mobility disabilities. I looked forward to these attractions but refused to use them because of this deficiency. In addition, the embarkment and disembarkment days were handled poorly. Both boarding and leaving the ship had us joining multiple lines, had us leave the ship and badge back in only to leave the ship a second time, & because of the delays caused in the confusion many people ended up running to catch flights (including myself). The best thing about the Joy was their show Footloose. This is a great thing too since seeing the show meant we had to miss out on their main dance party. They had some trivia, but the cruise director and team lacked luster and the games fell flat most times. The Starbucks located in the atrium where most activity occurred was nice. In short, unless Norwegian decides to invest in training, the ship’s ergonomics, and time management; I would not suggest this ship. Alaska’s inside passage cruises are some of the best, but do yourself a favor and pick a better ship! Read Less

I booked a mini suite with a balcony for a handicap person. They put us in a crew room, no balcony, horrible smell, noise day and night, very humid and no balcony. My elderly mother almost died of food poisoning, I was charged $1169.32 for hospital bill, for spoiled food she ate, right at their restaurant. Nothing to do in this boat, Cruise director was terrible, not enough seating, not enough accommodation, long lines at restaurants. Entertainment was horrible. They cut the trip short, less than a week before departure, they changed the destinations twice, a couple of days before departure. Charged 169 per person, for transportation to Paris, just to stay there for 3 hours, The line on the Service desk was long day and night, that's how everybody was disappointed. They had the same band, of four guys playing songs from the 70's a few times a day. Food was terrible, service was terrible. NCL, never again! Read Less

Hello. I was looking for a cruise to wind down and relax. However the cruise was a tornado of dysfunctional proportions by the cruise line. I get to the window and give them my passports. They ask for my room number. I offer it. The lady says, no the room number on the website is not your room. The supervisor female comes over and says they double booked us. Here is our number to our room. They gave us 2 sets of keys Incase (liability) all day long. We tried our room number from the website a gentleman and his female were in the room. He got angry with me from entering. Clearly NCL screwed up. Days 1,2,5 we had a toilet not working. I called days 1 & 2 to fix it. On day 2 the toilet comes out of the wall. I called guest services no answer, I tried again, finally someone answered. I said “didn’t you guys put the toilet back on after fixing it” I had charges from this other couple on my bill. I had photos on my card of this same other couple. On the day we were supposed to leave, I never got a letter that affords my group to be taken to Miami airport. Went down to the desk asked for the letter. The room number on the letter was different.... again. Plus all the charges on my bill were someone else. By fighting when them days 1,2,5 I was mentally exhausted by 8 pm. I had anxiety from the stress and my grandmother so angry. My grandmother has been on lots of cruises but this one was beyond her comprehension. I asked for a full refund. I didn’t enjoy at all. It didn’t live up to the amount I paid. The food was OK like a upscale Disney Park. The people working on the boat always smiling and exceptional. But no one has authority. Even when this guy hit me. No one took a interest in my concerns or safety despite writing in the comment box. And NCL never responded to my email. So. I would not recommend NCL Dawn. In good faith I was looking for a apologize. Don’t know if I will ever get it. The toilet came out of the wall bruised my leg. Just a really bad time. Read Less

My husband and I were recently on the Norwegian Getaway Ship that sailed from NYC on Saturday April 13 and returned Saturday April 20, 2019. We have used Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, but this was our first experience on NCL. It was awful. This was by far the worst cruise we have ever had the displeasure of sailing. We had so many issues, I don’t even know how to rank them, so in no particular order: 1. Instead of a queen bed, we were given 2 twin beds with a large sheet on top. There was no cushion, and both beds dipped in the middle it was incredibly uncomfortable. 2. There was no outlet by the bed, and my husband had to ask for an extension cord for his sleep apnea machine, which we had to run the length of the cabin. 3. Throughout the week, the understaffed and overcrowded buffets, bars, and restaurants ran out of water, ice, soft ice cream, and bloody Mary mix. 4. The adults only “Vibe” that could only be reserved once on the ship was sold out within hours of boarding, if not sooner. (I wouldn’t know the exact time because the line to speak with someone was at least 2 hours.) 5. All the on board shows were booked at least days beforehand. They were also very small venues so only a small, select amount of people could see them. For a so-called “Free-style” cruise, there seems to be an extensive amount of pre-planning involved. 6. During the day there were no beach chairs, and the chairs that only had a towel on them stayed for hours without a person or cruise member removing it. 7. The so-called “adults only” whirlpools were over-run with pre-teenagers and teenagers. When we (and another couple) asked a few cruise members to have the children to leave, they refused to tell the kids to evacuate. 8. For the only TWO days we got chairs after 4 PM we were told the towels had to be returned before 7 PM. 9. More often than not, the elevators were incredibly crowded. I am not even referring to attempting to board or disembark. On a daily basis it was a task just to get an elevator and often my husband and I were crowded around several other passengers. 10. We were able to have 3 dinners at specialty restaurants; however, at the complimentary restaurants we had a MINIMUM of a 45 minute wait or had to go later in the evening. 11. At the buffet, it was so difficult to find a table my husband and I took turns standing on line for food. Often, one side of the buffet was closed as well. 12. The bars on the ship were either closed or completely understaffed. Most bars had only 1 bartender and we had to wait 10 minutes or longer for a drink. 13. We were also charged a port tax for the drinks we ordered on the ship while docked. While I understand, now, that this is a law, only 1 waiter informed us. We would do not have a problem paying it; however, we should have been clearly informed. Overall, my husband and I travel to get away from schedules and routines. We want our vacations to be relaxing and stress-free. NCL does not follow their own advertisement of “free-style” and relaxing. We were incredibly disappointed in so many areas. Many of the other passengers we spoke to felt the same way. It’s a shame such a beautiful ship is being run by a company too incompetent to make sure people who have the time and ability to return, do not feel welcomed back. Read Less

I have been cruising for 40 years. My very fist cruise was on NCL Starward in 1984. This was a theme cruise which it why I chose it. The Summer Palace was beautiful, the dining room staff was very pleasant, but the food. OMG! Terrible is an understatement for the worst dining room food I have ever experienced. I am amazed at how bad it was! The menu never changed, & the menu descriptions did not describe what they brought out. Crispy fish that came out poached, Bourbon chicken that was really BBQ, mystery sauces on everything! I never went back after day 3 except to look at the menu. The buffet was OK, & I mean just OK. My 1st cabin smelled liked sewage. But, lucky me, there was a water pipe break day 2 which flooded most of the deck, I was able to pack up & move, but my new cabin was in a less than desirable location, over loud equipment used by the staff in the early AM & right under The Stardust Theatre. But at least it didn't smell. Cabin stewards were nice. Most of the people on the ship seemed to be miserable working there & the officers seemed quite unfriendly. Once you are trapped at sea, they nickel & dime you to death! I would swear the ships stabilizers were broken it was so rough. I have never been sea sick before, so I don't if it was that or the bad food, but I stayed queasy for 7 days. I do not believe in saying never, will I will never sail with nor recommend NC to anyone. This ship needs a total remodel. AVOID! Up side, I lost 5 pounds. Read Less

I have been going through some personal problems. MY spouse and my Doctor suggested a cruise, because every one knows how fun they are and they thought it was the perfect thing. Well the first night the maître de was very rude when we asked to be put on the list for dinner. The hostess tried to be nice and told him that they still had a whole section they had not opened yet. The Maître de was very rude to her and told us it would be 30 minutes. NO problem, went tried to get a drink while we waited. No wait staff anywhere. So we went to the nearest bar and ordered drinks, it took 20 minutes. At dinner the wait staff were working very had to keep up with everything. That was impossible for them. We keep running out of water, he forgot our bread basket. NO smiles, no apologies, he was just to busy to care. Everyday was like this. One morning I just had to complain. The service was so offal and food was terrible. I was so upset I spent 2 hours crying in my room. We made it into 2 shows Jungle Dreams and the rock show. Both shows were fantastic. The food and service at the Jungle dreams show was delicious and on point. We tried to get into some of the bars, the lines were long and over crowded when we did get in. NO wait staff again. some clubs had standing room only. we didn't like that very much. so we ended up watching tv in our room a lot. I would never recommend this cruise line to anyone. The waitstaff was rude and practically not there. I fact I am thinking about suing Norwegian for a full refund. And medically setting my recovery back. Read Less

We had heard good things about Norwegian and wanted to give them a try. We were disappointed. The food was terrible and it was impossible to get into the smaller shows. One night I ordered what was supposed to be a hot appetizer and it came out stone cold. Food had no flavor. At the pub they serve your food in a metal basket sitting on a piece of paper which made it impossible to use a knife. We enjoyed our excursions. The cabin steward was terrible. She did not listen to our requests. The room was a nightmare. It was embarrassing as you could see through the glass. The beds were as hard as a rock. The only real plus was the unlimited beverage package. The casino was tight. I figured I would have earns some perks for the amount of money I spent. Other cruise lines have given me free cruises, wine etc.We will never sail Norwegian again. We prefer Carnival. Read Less
