Just spent a week on the Getaway, January 26 - February 2. I see others have reviewed this cruise and wonder...were we actually on the same cruise?? We have cruised Princess, Cunard and Avalon (river) prior, first time on Norwegian. We loved it and are sold on mega ships! Yes, there can be a little crowding in some places at some times, but you can just avoid those places and go somewhere else. People act SHOCKED that there 4,000 people on this cruise...did you do your research? It's not a secret people. You simply cannot beat the value for the money with Norwegian. If you are not looking for a huge boat with casual atmosphere, then look at another cruiseline. It's not the cruiseline's fault...they deliver what they advertise. You just chose the wrong cruise for you. So here's our summary of the trip: Were were a group of eight. Four "50-somethings" and Four "20-somethings". Ebarkation: Flew into New Orleans a day early with the "free" Norwegian flights. Arrived at 11am, had the whole day to explore the city. Next morning took Uber approx. 1.5 miles from our hotel to cruiseport at 10:30 am. He dropped us right next to the luggage drop area. Walked into terminal, about 2 minutes to registration desk, a couple of minutes there, got boarding group 6. Waited about 20 minutes - was on the ship by 11:30am. Easy peasy. Had lunch in Taste dining room, our room was ready after that and our luggage showed up about 2pm. Could not have been easier. Cabin: Had large balcony room on deck nine. Balcony had 2 loungers, a table and 2 chairs. Awesome set up. Cabin exactly as pictured online. Tons of storage, didn't use most of it. Loved having the couch by the balcony doors. Was glad to have US news channels to keep up on news while away. Bathroom was spacious and well laid out with plenty of storage. Huge shout out to our room steward Waisul, he was awesome! Always around, always smiling, greeted us by name every time, was willing to chat and share a bit about himself when we asked. Food: My husband is a professionally trained chef (Culinary Institute of America) and he was really impressed with both the food quality and service in all of the restaurants we ate at. Did we absolutely love everything we ate? Of course not, there will always be something you don't care for, but you can always order something else so no big deal. He is generally not a big buffet person but thought the offerings on the main buffet were plentiful, attractively displayed and most were delicious. We frequented the main dining rooms for breakfast and a couple of dinners and they did not disappoint. Most of the servers were really friendly. We had the dining package and were able to make reservations for Moderno and the Cirque dinner show about 4 weeks out. The others were showing sold out prior to sailing, but we were able to make reservations for Cagney's and Ocean Blue once on board with no problems. Cagney's was amazing, the best of the four. Most of the meal at Ocean Blue was wonderful, one of the entrees not so much but not a deal breaker. Moderno was our least favorite, but probably more the syle of the meal and we were with a group of eight for a friend's birthday...it was his choice. We ate dinner one night at the Shanghai Noodle Bar, no reservations but we showed up at 6pm and they gave us a little pager to be called when our table was ready. Waited about 30 minutes, you can go to one of the nearby bars for a drink while you wait. Loved the spring rolls and potstickers as well as the pork noodle bowl I ordered. We grabbed snacks, including late night, at O'Sheehans several times and they fit the bill for the munchie fix. Bars: We had the drinks package and took total advantage of it, LOL! My husband is really into wine and there were several wines by the glass that he was quite happy with. You can choose more expensive wines by the glass and just pay the difference (between the $15 maximum and the glass price). We loved the mojito bar, the margaritas at Jimmy Buffets and the chocolate martinis at the Prime Meridan bar by Cagney's ( this out-of-the-way bar was a hidden treasure!) I loved the prosecco offered by the glass, and tried a whole bunch of different frozen drinks during the week. Found out several days in that they offered cans of spiked seltzer (Truly, Bon Viv) at the pool bar and it was really refreshing on the rocks. I would not sail without a drinks package, the menu prices are crazy!!! Entertainment: We are not really "show" people, but several in our group urged us to come with them to the shows so we reserved Burn the Floor and Million Dollar Quartet before sailing. While we are not "show" people, we were impressed and the productions were over the top. We LOVED the Cirque show. Our favorite though was Syd Norman's. The House Band was awesome and we also enjoyed the Foreigner tribute band. Yes...it is crowded in there, but if you are persistant you can get seats. We went in during the trivia that was running prior to the music and stood in the back. When trivia was over a lot of people left and we got seats. The Foreigner band also played in the main theater at the end of the week, so more people got to see them there. We went to the Ship Q&A in the theater with the captain, cruise director and engineer. It was very informative. Played in the casino a little, broke even on that. Played a lot of mini golf, shuffle board and the giant chess board. Waited too long to do the ropes course, it was closed on our last sea day due to wind/weather. Lesson learned...don't wait! Ports: We had not planned to do any excursions. Got of the ship briefly in Cozumel and Ocho Rios to walk around. Grand Cayman was a bit of a project getting off because of the tenders but we knew that from doing our research. We signed up for a tender group the day before and got off by 11. Took a cab up 7 mile beach to check out a resort we are considering visiting. Had lunch there, walked the beach and took a swim. Cab back to port, waited about 45 minutes to tender back. Others in our group did NCL excursions at all ports and reported no problems and a great time. Disembarkation: Did "self assist" for luggage since we travel light. Had breakfast in the buffet, walked off the ship at 10:30. Took 10 - 15 minutes to clear immigration, etc. We had booked the NCL shuttle to the airport. Arrived at the airport around 11:30. No problems with flights home. Time to plan our next cruise! Chose this cruise for a couple of reasons. Wanted a nice little winter getaway, western Caribbean is always good for that. Had not sailed out of New Orleans yet and wanted to do this. Had not been on the Getaway or any ships of this size, in the past we have sailed the Jewel Class ships and really enjoy this size of ship. New Orleans is a great city, been there before a couple of times. Flew in the day before embark. Stayed at the Marriott Renaissance Pere Marquette French Quarter area hotel. Nice place, fun atmosphere, nice restaurant on site with good food and cocktails. The Tacklebox. A short Uber ride to the port terminal. Fairly easy access to the unload area at the Julia Street Terminal, handing off you luggage was easy and quick. Getting through the check in process was efficient, did not take long at all, we did not have to wait for a group # to board, from the time we walked in the terminal to boarding the ship was about 30 minutes. We waited until close to noon to go to the terminal, thus no wait. The Getaway is a beautiful ship! She is a big ship with a large guest capacity, most places did not feel all that crowded, ever. I think O'Sheehan's probably had the most conjestion and crowds most of the time. It's a great pub and hangout spot with good bar tenders, so ya, popular place. All of the dining venues we ate at were all very good. Great food. Service was stellar, especially in Ocean Blue. Service throughout the ship was very good. Staff and crew were great. Sanitary measures were top notch as always. Much appreciate NCL's efforts here trying to keep us all healthy. Our cabin, 10302 balcony room, nice spacious room. Decent storage, great bathroom with really good water pressure. Fun to have a balcony, first time we had done this. Bed was comfy and pillows were nice. I think the only complaint I have regarding the cabin - there is not one USB port plug in. There are two regular plug in outlets right next to the coffee maker on the little counter and that's it! We were very surprised at this, especially since the Getaway was refurbished last summer. Found this to be quite odd. The Jade and the Pearl both have USB ports next to both sides of the bed. So readers be aware and go prepared. The itinerary.... it's the western Caribbean, everything and all places are gorgeous, just enjoy. On Cozumel we did a Dune Buggy and snorkel shore excursion. Very enjoyable, highly recommend. On Grand Cayman we did the island tour that stops at Hell and the Stingray City excursion. This was so much fun! The stingrays are amazing! The guides that took us out to the stingrays were very skilled and helpful. What an experience. A must do if you like stuff like this. On Jamaica we did the Bobsled and Zipline excursion. Another super fun side trip! Also recommend. Read Less

This was our first time taking a cruise and we had a great time! We got a great deal that included our airfare and free dining package, drink package, internet, excursion credit and a cabin credit. We arrived in Nola around 1:30 on Saturday and had some time to explore the city. We arrived at the cruise terminal at 9:30 the following morning and were part of boarding group #2. Everything was super smooth, there were no lines and we were able to get on the ship and get the Vibe passes we desired. Our 10th floor balcony room was spacious and clean and had a lot of smart storage allowing us ample room to unpack and get settled in for our week stay. During our stay we had wonderful service from our cabin steward, Nelson. He always greeted us with a smile, called us by name and kept our room stocked with towels and anything else we needed. The ship was also very clean and well kept, the only dirtiness we saw was from other passengers leaving drink cups and/or plates random places for the crew to pick up after them. Prior to our trip I had done a lot of research and had booked 2 group dinners several weeks ahead of time online at the specialty restaurants we wanted to try during our vacation so getting reservations wasn't an issue that a lot of people mention in these reviews. In my opinion, if you know you're going to go on vacation, taking a few minutes to book a reservation ahead of time to ensure you get the time you want is a smart idea and you can always cancel it or change it when you get on the ship. We ate at the tepanyaki grill, Cagney's steakhouse and Moderno's - they were all very good. For our other meals, we usually ate at the buffet, which offered a decent selection for every meal. We did try the noodle bar, which we thought was delicious and O'Sheehan's, Savor and Tropicana. We did think Tropicana was our least favorite of all, but it is a large venue and the staff did their best. Nothing we ate was terrible, in fact the majority of it was good to very good quality. The only show we went to was the Burn the Floor dance show, it was decent. We spent a lot of time up at the Vibe beach club, in our opinion it was 100% worth the extra charge for the week pass. We enjoyed some relaxation and quiet and enjoyed the bartenders and staff that were working up there. We did go down the water slides a couple of times in the main pool area, they were super fun and super fast! The only Norwegian port excursion we went on was to the Discovery Bay Beach Break in Jamaica, the beach was nice but the stay was short, we didn't realize it would be about a 45 minute drive to the beach and did not love the mandatory stop at the shops on our way back to the port. We did two private excursions at Cozumel and Grand Cayman which were excellent. For the amount of people we thought the getting on and off the ship at all the ports, EVEN THE TENDERING at Grand Cayman were really smooth and organized. Getting off the ship was also smooth, the line was long but moved quickly - we walked a couple blocks away from the chaos and called an uber and made our way to the airport. Overall we thought everything was great - but we are pretty easy to please people. I feel like the majority of people forget you're on a ship with almost 4,000 other people and that the world does indeed NOT revolve around them. Be courteous and have some patience and some grace and remember you are on VACATION - it's better than being at work! No need to be in a rush all the time, slow down and appreciate the view and the opportunity to see these beautiful places and realize how hard the crew is working to make an operation of that size run pretty dang smooth. We couldn't really think of any complaints the entire week, we had fun, we made memories and we would definitely cruise with NCL again. :) Read Less

Me and my girlfriend sailed on the Getaway Jan 12-17 and had an amazing time. This is our third cruise with NCL and we will definitely continue sailing with them. I’m 33, my girlfriend is 23 and we also sailed with 2 other couples. This ship has so much to do including the rope course, rock climbing, awesome water slides, shows, entertainment, comedy, casino etc..The nightlife was great too with the bliss club, casino, and the glow party in the h20 was amazing, We had a blast! The food was also very good including the wings at O Sheehan’s, ribeye at Cagneys, and we also enjoyed the buffet. Our balcony room was 14858 right at the back by the elevators and our room steward Neil was awesome. He knew our names right when we arrived and he made us feel at home. Thanks again Neil! I also want to give a thanks to Rey the bartender at Margaritaville and Rohan at the pool bar. Both of them took great care of us and we barely ever had to wait for a drink at any bar. The only issue we ran into was on the third day I had lost my room card and i didn’t realize it until a few hours later. I then went to guest services and received a new card. The next day I checked my account and realized someone had found my card and went to the arcade and charged $52 worth of games on my account lol. ( damn kids ) I then returned to guest services and they were very friendly and immediately took off the charges. Overall we had an amazing time, we gave it a 10/10. We cruised on the MSC seaside in December 2018 and we gave that a 8/10 so we definitely enjoyed the getaway more. We will definitely be sailing NCL again and we highly recommend the Getaway and we also loved the Epic too which I wrote a review on 2 years ago. Read Less

If you utilize Cruise Critics, you are somewhat obligated to review your cruises as they happen. I would like to follow-through on that commitment. I recently went on the NCL Getaway, November 24, 2019 to December 1, 2019. It departed out of the port of New Orleans. Understand the Reviewer: I am 62. My first cruise was when I was 22 for my honeymoon. That was a stateroom with now windows and bunk beds on the NCL SS Norway. It was a great cruise and one of the best cruise experience. My wife and family have gone on over 20 cruises over the years. 10 years ago, my family started to cruise in suites class. Our family motto is, “Any cruise is what you make of it. Do the details up front, engage with people and go with the flow.” I am a very detailed person. I love to study everything about a cruise prior to going on it. This cruise was no exception. I love the process so take that under advisement when reading this review. Overview: To fully understand this review, I will start by saying we were in the NCL Haven Spa Suite. So, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Said elephant is the question, “Is the Haven worth the premium?” The answer is, YES (to my wife and myself). Quite frankly in every way. This cruise was one of the very best of my 40 years of cruising. From start to finish, it was as close to perfect as possible. Happy to explain below, just needed everyone to understand a bit about me and that my review focuses on my Haven Experience. Pre-Cruise: I received a U.S. Mail letter from NCL Haven Desk 60 days prior. It welcomed me to the upcoming cruise and the fact that I was staying in the Haven. It gave me a phone number and an email to take care of any of my needs prior to boarding. I took full advantage of that offer. I had them fix my specialty restaurant reservations and times; excursion data; confirmation on perks; need for special water for my CPAP and especially the Premium Plus Drink Program. These few details only scratch the surface of my pre-cruise requests. It is very important to note that having this advanced ability to handle details, made a huge difference for this or any future cruise. Embark: Got to the port at 10:45 AM. Through security in less then 2 minutes. Found the Haven check-in area. Check in was 10 minutes tops, with no wait. My wife and I were escorted to the Haven Guest pre-boarding port lounge. The lounge was private, a bit small and kind of make shift. Still very nice. A cup of coffee and my first of many smoked salmon snacks was being consumed within 20 minutes of arriving at the port. In the lounge for about 15 minutes waiting on the ship to be cleared. Once cleared, we were escorted to the ship and up to the Haven lounge where the party started instantly. We were given sliders, a welcome aboard drink and waited a few minutes for the Haven Restaurant for lunch. They offered either the Haven Restaurant or Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville for our lunch. Little hint, do the Haven Restaurant and get the huge pork chop. Another note, while at the port, they will give you a drink eventually. The issue is they must charge you tax even if you have the beverage package and it is a pain in the butt for them. Dinning: Dinning was the best I have every had on any cruise, ever. I am not talking about the specialty restaurants, buffet or main restaurant. I am talking about the Haven Restaurant. Last year I had a similar experience on the Celebrity Equinox in their suites restaurant called the Lumina. Similar however the Haven was better in every way from food, staffing and service. • Haven Restaurant: Only for Haven Guests. Even though the menu never changed from day to day, it was simply incredible. The service, attention to detail, quality and taste. My wife and I started the cruise on the Keto diet. We both lost huge weight prior to cruising. We stayed on Keto for most of the cruise. I lasted 6 hours on day one until I cheated BIG. It was on the chocolate cake alamode and it was earth shattering. I had it three more times during the week. My favorite meal is and will always be breakfast with French press coffee; steak & eggs; smoked salmon; almond Danish and the list goes on. The plates were heated so the food stayed warm. Everything was cooked perfectly. Lunch was no different. Three-inch pork chop; poached salmon; and chief salad were just a few choices. Dinner I had some of the best prime rib of my life. Flawless in all accounts. I really like to eat but I am also super picky. • Cagney’s Steak House (Cost Option): Save you money folks. This steak house is average to below average at best. It used to be something special. The only reason we went there was because we got four (4) specialty restaurants as perks. Now don’t get me wrong, it was OK and a cut above Outback™, especially the service and atmosphere. Remember I said I was picky. I was hoping for a GREAT steak like at a New York steakhouse. • La Cucina Italian (Cost Option): Not spectacular but had promise. The bread looks better than it really was. I had a filet mignon that was huge and good. The rest of the meal was good but not memorable. Service was average which was surprising. We skipped the desert and went back to our suite. We called our butler (I love saying that) and had him bring us the incredible chocolate cake alamode from the Haven and coffee. So darn good. Not Keto. • Le Bistro French (Cost Option): Now we are talking. Let me say that this was a perk from American Express Platinum Card. If you paid for your entire cruise on the card, you got $300.00 on board credit and dinner for two at Le Bistro. Lovely from start to finish. I had the veal and it was good. What made it better was the presentation which was a huge stainless steam cap pull off to display the course. The bread was over the top and the sauce on the veal was to die for. My desert was three scoops of vanilla ice cream, in a French pastry, topped with three different kind of chocolate candies and finally hot chocolate sauce. Don’t miss this place. • Ocean Blue Seafood (Cost Option): The best clam chowder ever. Great bread. The fish selection was very good. I have a habit of doing way too much red meat. If I say I liked this restaurant, then it must be good. I have to say. We said next to a couple that was our entertainment for the evening. They were married forever and seemed like they hated each other. She was so loud and never stopped talking to us. He did not say much but rolled his eyes at his wife all night. It seems as the story goes, she gambles a lot and this cruise was a perk. Yet they argued about the coast of the appetizer. Great dinner show. • Buffet (Complementary): It was exactly what you would expect a buffet to be. Looks great, lots of average food and filling. My wife was still doing Keto and she got a piece of pizza. She scraped off the meat and cheese and said it was good. I am old and have had my fair share of cruise buffets. To each his own. • O’Sheehan’s Bar and Grill (Complementary): I hated it. I was spoiled by this time. My wings were just OK, and my burger was a hockey puck. I did not eat my food. We left and went to the Haven pool. There I got a cheese burger with not bun. It was great. Take my advice and just go to the buffet. • Final Note: I only review where I eat. Lots of food choice on this ship. I am also not a foodie. I like basic things like meat, fish and chicken. If I am at McDonalds, I know what I am going to get and enjoy it. If I am at a bar and grill, a McDonalds burger won’t due. All that said, if the food served is bad or just not to my liking, I don’t eat it. When I do, I liked it. Adult Drink Package: Here we go again with the Elephant in the room. “Is it worth it?” NCL usually gives the “Premium Drink Package” as a perk. It is a very nice perk and you should take it if you drink at all. I got that perk and upgraded to the “Premium Plus Drink Package” for about $250.00 per person per week additional. Think I am crazy, “nah, nah, I say!”. My reasoning; I was on vacation and we like nice wines and alcohol. Let’s start with how my wife and I used this package. At lunch and dinner, this package allowed my wife to get a bottle of great wine. Not all wines so the ones you can order has a star next to them on the wine menu. The bottle was listed at $89.00 a bottle. My wife usually drinks $9.95 litters. Therefore, this wine was the ultimate treat for her. If she did not finish the whole bottle at the meal (she did sometimes finish it), it would be delivered to the room at no extra charge, DING. Bottle water (with and without gas), energy drinks and specialty coffees were not included on the regular drink package. These were included on the Premium Plus Drink Package. I love bottled water and took it back to the room if not finished. There was no $15.00 per drink limit on the Premium Plus Drink Package. I was drinking Cuervo 1800 silver, spectacular red wine by the glass all week. They lost money this trip on our drink package, I assure you. I am now home going cold turkey at home on the 12-step program. That is a joke and I mean no ill intent. Haven Suite: On this cruise, my wife and I had a Haven Spa Suite. It was very nice yet not the nicest suite we have ever had. Not a very large suite with a rather small veranda. In the room, it did have a Jacuzzi built for two that allowed you to see out the huge window at the sea. The spa suite comes was complementary access to the Spa Thermal Facilities. Now that was a very nice perk. The suite bed, bedding towels, robe, in-room espresso machine all were over the top from a quality standpoint. This was the least expensive Haven suite ($2,099.00 per person), it was perfect for my wife and me. Future side note, I am taking my family of five (5) in a huge Haven two-bedroom Family Villa on the brand new NCL Encore in May 2020. Now that will be a suite to be remembered. No complaints about the Haven Spa Suite though. Just book it early before they sell out. Room Steward: We drove him nuts. First as part of my planning, we had everything in the mini-refrigerator that cost additional taken out. We would leave and come back to quickly for him to get the room completely finished. He never complained. Then we finally got the idea on the button’s located on the side of the door. Press one button, the room steward would clear your room. From then on, we were all in sync. His tip was part of the $18.00 per person per day while in the Haven. Butler: I studied on past cruises what to do with the butler. I had a two-page document with all our needs and requests. I told you I was very detailed. Everything from no candy, cookie, fruit or sugar snacks due to being on the Keto Diet. Special water for CPAP Machine. Replace the complementary champagne with Wine. Nuts, cheese and meats would be our afternoon snack. We ordered breakfast room service once and desert once. The main reason for this was the room was too small for full meals. Every item we outlined or needed was handled. I tipped him $100.00 at the end of the week. Entertainment: The best of any cruise ship for many years. I did not do everything, but I did do more then I have ever done in the past. Let me break it down: • Burn the Floor: This was incredible. From start to finish, high powered Latin dance. My wife is super critical on these shows. We can sit up front but choose to sit in the last row on the isle, so we can leave early and not embarrass ourselves. Not this time. When the show was over, my wife was the first one on her feet doing a standing ovation. I was right after her. Broadway quality. • Million Dollar Quartet: This was a Broadway show. It is about four past superstars of music and how they met for one session, on one night for Sun Records. What made this show great was the actors were also doing all the music and singing. Very talented folks doing a really nice job. Again, completely professional with a quality cast. • Other Entertainment: There was a dinner theatre show but we did not attend. We heard good things about it. I personally did not want to waste an evening with average food. There was a wine lover show, another pass for us. I did not hear much about the comedy shows except they were very crowded and first come, first seated. Activities: So many to do and not enough time to do them. Here are some of my favorites. First and foremost, the water slides. Even at 62 years old, they were awesome. Game shows in main area done very well. Thermal Spa was awesome. Cigars in the Haven Sun deck was simply over the top for me. I went to the humidor room however it was small and being outside was much more enjoyable. Excursions: I have been on many cruises. After going on some good and bad excursions, I have my Favorite. It was and always be Cabana’s or Bungalows. These are also the most expensive excursions. On this cruise, it is the same. We did the “All Inclusive Bungalow” on Rutan. Great time even though the tender ride was one hour off the ship. We also did the Tequila tasting which was educational, fun and very much recommended. We had a Snorkel and Catamaran trip, but the waters were to choppy. Conclusion: My wife and I had a GREAT time. Was it perfect? Never is on any cruise. The key is take responsibility for your own cruise. I learned that lesson early on when cruising. Yes, the Haven is worth every penny. However, once you do Haven, there is no going back. I had a plan going on this cruise, I worked my plan and finally my plan worked out. Preparation is everything and reduces disappointment. The one thing I will say, I was completely impressed with every member of the crew and staff. Not just in the Haven; on the entire ship. Anyone who reads this and doesn’t know me personally, I am a very tough critic. Let me tell you, I am NOT easy to please. I had such a good time and loved the size of the ship so much, I cancelled my upcoming June 2020 NCL Pearl cruise and re-booked the NCL Encore in May 2020. I hope the time I took to do this review helps you decide. Happy cruising. Read Less

We took the cruise for our honeymoon, the experience was above our expectations. We had the haven experience and it made the difference, we highly recommend it, since it truly enhances the cruise culinary experience. About the ports, in Faremont Jamaica and in Roatan Honduras there isn’t much to do outside of the port if you decide not to take a tour, and the tendering process can be a little difficult and inefficient (Gran Cayman and Roatan). Onboard, the service is great and the shows are very good, specially the Cirque and steam steampunk dining show. We specially the spa installations, which include sauna, sanarium and aromatic steam room , as well as lounge chair with an amazing view of the sea. The specialty dinning, the alcohol packages and the internet come at an extra cost but may be worth the cost (specially the unlimited alcohol, since the bartenders are very good). We would definitely travel Norwegian again. Read Less

First time cruising outside of the Caribbean and first time on NCL. This is NOT a one and done but a forever go-to cruise line. Exceptional food, service, cleanliness of the ship, professional staff and there is always something to do. The suites were perfect size with modern features and lighting along with the balcony being the perfect size for coffee in the morning. The food was exceptional at EVERY place we went with La Bistro being a 6 star restaurant. The shows were truly off-Broadway with the acting and variety. The excursions were very well organized, understandable in what to do and courteous staff to answer any questions one may have before embarking for the day. For night life - Bliss is a fun place to meet up with new friends and end the evening with a twist either on the dance floor or in your drink,. We chose this cruise as we had never been to Russia. The ship was amazing. So much entertainment in so many parts of the ship. Definitely the best entertainment that we have had in all our cruises. The cruise staff weren’t great but their cruise director, Francisco was outstanding. The food on board was excellent, better than we expected. The ports that we visited were worth seeing. Although the ship is geared to families with children with all the Amenities that they have for them it didn’t impede on the wonderful nine days that we had on the Getaway. We went to the Cirque night. Well worth it. The dualling piano show was very good as were all the shows. We really liked Sids Bar and it’s outside bar. Never seen bars and restaurants on the port and starboard sides of a ship before. Fantastic idea. Well done Norwegian Getaway. Read Less

Excellent experience. Ship was fully staffed. Never had to wait for a drink at the bars. Public areas kept tidy and clean. Made reservations in advance for the shows and select dining. Found we did not need reservations in two of the main rooms. Taste and Savor, we were walk right up and get a table with little wait. Heard it can be hard to find quiet spots on board. The sunset lounge was our favorite bar, located in the middle of the ship on the inside. Never too crowded or boisterous. Take the time and spend the money to see the cirque dreams steam punk dinner show. Very good production for a ship. The best shipboard entertainment I have ever seen. Burn the floor is good too. Just make your reservations before setting sail! Syd Norman’s Pour House had excellent rock cover band. Very entertaining there. For shot excursions, be sure to explore non ship options. We booked privately with Alla Tours for both St. Petersburg and Stockholm. We saved a ton of money compared to the excursions (relatively identitcal itineraries) by booking with Alla. This was our first ever cruise and we couldn’t have picked better! Food Excellent always. We loved the Tropicana and main dining rooms which all serves the same menu that never failed to impress. The buffet was great, with something to eat all the time. Cookies before bed was a great ritual! Shanghai’s was also great and O’Sheahans. The other specialty restaurants were honestly not needed but looked so inviting and we’d definitely try them if we go again. We did try the Teppanyaki restaurant which was great fun and highly recommended (note that it is loud and lively not suitable for romantics wanting intimate meal!) Entertainment A packed schedule with plenty to do. We felt the bingo was over priced and there were lots of extras generally. All the shows were excellent. I particularly loved the Wine Lovers musical which was funny, fun and great value. Cirque was also great with a fabulous meal (although wish we’d have arrived earlier as the meal was a little rushed) Premium All-Inclusive This was well worth the money but did have some irritating drawbacks. It gave us the Ultimate Beverage Package, Coffee and Juice, along with bottled water in our cabin and 60mins WiFi. All gratuities and drinks up to $15 included. This covered pretty much everything we’d need other than some premium beverages and wines. You could use any bar or any restaurant. Frustratingly, the coffee package doesn’t include the Atrium cafe which is the most obvious place you’d want it! The coffee package included ‘specialty coffees at meal times’ so we got around this by going to O’Sheahans which had meal times 5.30am to 9.30pm and carrying our coffees down one flight to the cafe!! The cakes in the Atrium were also extra but looked lovely. The Juice package was a joke and didn’t include freshly squeezed juice at the poolside. Ports Roatan - beautiful upon arrival but very little to do without booking an excursion. We walked briefly away from the pier and felt quite uncomfortable being pestered by the locals. Recommend having a half an hour exploring the little shops at the pier and then having a day on the ship whilst it’s quiet. Harvest Caye - lovely purpose-built island resort. The activities are overpriced but we had a great day on the beach and explored the small zoo-type area which was all free. Costa Maya - a delightful purpose-built port/resort with lots to see. We loved the aviary walkways ($12 and well worth it unless you are scared of parrots landing on you!) Cozumel - we had an enjoyable excursion to some Mayan ruins followed by a trip to a quiet beach. The excursion was an NCL official one and was overpriced but the tour guide was great. There is lots to do at the port and more if you walk down to where the other cruise lines dock (a taxi might be best). It felt pretty safe. Ship The ship was fabulous. Spotlessly clean, so many lovely bars and restaurants with gorgeous decoration and super service. Loads of entertainment in the bars. Lively at poolside on sea days but quieter areas at the back of the ship or along the Waterfront (our favourite part) if you want to chill. Casino was great. Ice Bar is extra but good value - the vodka just kept flowing! We never queued for pool slides or the ropes course (walking the plank was an experience!). Mini golf was great. The video arcades and bowling are extra. There was a nice mix of ages on the ship. Good for families but also for young groups of friends, couples and older people too. The dress code is really relaxed (which we loved as no need to pack suits or a tux etc) but some people chose to if visiting the more posh specialty restaurants. Embarkation and Disembarkation was fine. A wonderful highly recommended trip! Read Less

First time on Norwegian was very impressed with the ship easy emarkment and departure at the port. Shuttle from airport was a little disorganized but a lot better when traveling from the port to the airport impressed with how many people there were that they had to organize and we all made it to destination in a timely fashion. Food was amazing and large variety to choose from and restaurants were easy to get into love the open dinning not having to dress up is a plus. Ship was big and was nice to explore found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. Lots of activities to do on sea days. Pool area could have been a little bigger but that’s a minor detail. Will definitely be cruising with Norwegian again and already looking into our next cruise and taking our girls and there friends with them. Can’t wait to cruise with Norwegian again. Read Less

This was our first cruise on the Norwegian Getaway. We had sailed on the Escape before. The Getaway is so much like the Escape. My husband prefers the smaller ships because of fewer people and no need for reservations for entertainment or dining, but I like both sizes. This cruise we had a mini-suite which we loved. Our steward was exceptional. Very friendly. But of course, all the crew members are so friendly and go out of their way to make your visit wonderful. For me, the cruise and not the ports so much are the most important part of the vacation. You are waited on and pampered, no cooking or cleaning, everything is done for you, you just have fun and relax. Our ports were a lot of fun too. We loved Roatan the most. We went snorkeling from Tabyana Beach. Terrific time. Costa Maya, we visited a Mayan Ruins, Mayan Chocolate Factory. So much fun at every port. My ONLY complaint has nothing to do with the cruise line or ports, but with other passengers that don't comply with the rules of smoking. I would be trying to relax on my larger deck when another passenger would be smoking on theirs and all the smoke smell would come my way. I really hate that smell and I think it is inconsiderate of these people to smoke and make others put up with it. I try my best to steer clear of the outside smoking bar or casino area. Other than that, we had a great time. Read Less

This was our 1st ever cruise vacation It was a Christmas present for my girlfriend . We were extremely surprised of how wonderful of a vacation we encountered , I will definitely book another cruise in the future with NCL , probably with the Getaway . Everything on the Getaway from embarkation to disembarkation was a great experience . This ship is the best , the crew , amenities , food , entertainment , ports of call , service and shows are just a total delight . The Getaway is well maintained and kept totally clean and disinfected on a daily basis . Everyone aboard this ship was very friendly and the entire crew was very tentative to our needs , we did not lack anything , we did not have to lift a finger for anything . This vacation experience has blown our mind away . It was the experience out of this world . Thank you very much for the great time we had . sincerely P.Del Rio Read Less

This was our first cruise in 15 years, and all of our expectations were exceeded. We derive happiness with drinking, eating and being entertained on vacations. The food was excellent (some friends we were with said the buffet was just OK, but I thought it was great for what it was). The free restaurants are all you really need too. Great food options that taste delicious. We did Cagney's one night, and it was good, but not so much better than what we got at the free restaurants. The drink package was probably my favorite part. I expected them to have a red, white and sparkling wine, but they actually had multiple types of each wine with legit brand names to boot (Chateau St Michelle, Hogue, etc). The liquor was also decent. Our entire group of 8 (drinkers) were all extremely satisfied with the options. We went to "burn the floor" and "million dollar quartet" which were free, and excellent shows. We paid for the wine lovers show, and enjoyed it, but overall it was not as much fun as the other two free shows. The customer service was probably my favorite thing of all. Every staff member I spoke to seemed to genuinely want to help (some quieter than others, but we never received slow or negative service). The stops were OK. All of the stops featured a ton of vendors trying to sell you on the same thing. I enjoyed Costa Maya the most because of our excursion (Chachoben ruin tour). It lasted many hours, and was interesting. I recommend booking this excursion online by googling the title of the excursion from the NCL site. We got our tour for half the price NCL was charging. The only draw back was that the bed was not very comfortable, but it was not bad by any means. Read Less

We chose this Western Caribbean itinerary because we wanted to ensure we would have a chance at warm weather in early January. With stops in Honduras, Belize and Mexico.. all three delivered great weather. Only one day had a bit of rain but we were snorkeling that day.. so wet anyway! Hovering around 80.. we definitely could take advantage of the water both on board as well as ashore. We were traveling as a couple with a young adult child who booked their own room in the STUDIO area. We booked a mini-suite but had the great fortune to succeed in our upgrade bid to a Forward Haven room on the 10th floor. The upgrade system is a bit of a nail biter as I changed my bid several times up and down.. before getting notice a couple days before that we had been granted one. But, I understand NCL wanting to maximize their ability to make money.. so we were still thrilled with the outcome. Now, the Studio area was also a win for the younger traveler. Her room was compact but had a generously sized bed and plenty of storage for all of her stuff. The rooms are interior.. but she didn't spend a ton of time in there and there are tons of places to catch a view! They have a key access to the studio area and we kind of liked the fact that that area had some extra security control since she was cruising "alone" at only 21. She also liked the lounge area that had a small bar and she said they had a little selection of pastries in the morning. I think it was a really nice touch. Her steward was great and she got the same "towel sculpture" service that people in the other rooms get. So... traveling solo.. you don't get short changed at all. She found it exceedingly easy to meet people on the boat as a young single woman. She came home with friends in her contacts from 14 to 57 years old.. she didn't have problems with anyone misbehaving and I think she would definitely say that it was a safe trip for her. The room we were assigned was floor 10 forward Port side. It consisted of a front sitting room with a couch, dining table, balcony and minibar area. There was a large TV and a desk as well. You could certainly have a 3rd person stay in that area if you needed to but they would need to go through the bedroom to use the bathroom. The bathroom was really nice and very spacious with two sinks and both a tub and a large shower with a rain head and side jets. There was also a small vanity that I found really nice to set up with my makeup and hair stuff. Plenty of oversized towels were available and the toiletries were also well stocked and nice quality. The bedroom itself had a king sized bed which was very comfortable with tons of storage.. 3 closets and many drawers and shelves. There was a large porthole window facing forward and it was neat to watch where we were going from the bed. We had both a Butler (Raymond) and a Steward (Adris/Adres(sp). To be honest, we didn't use the butler too much. I know they will do things for you like unpack etc.. but we just did those kinds of things ourselves and only ordered one meal in the room. He did bring us afternoon snacks and it was something different every day.. a bit of extra pampering and kind of cool. Adres was our steward and the one that we ended up having the most contact with. He helped get things done like retrieving an earring that had fallen behind the side table and got a closet latch fixed for us as well. He also was like a ghost keeping our room in great shape all day without intruding on our ability to use the room. The only drawbacks to the location of the room is that it's a bit of a walk to the elevator and it isn't "within" the haven complex.. so I guess that's part of the reason we didn't have as much contact with our butler as we might have if we had been up on decks 15/16. But it didn't hurt our experience and we found our room quiet and peaceful... kept well and very comfortable. The Haven Experience itself is amazing. There is a private pool, hot tub, sauna, bar and restaurant and lounge areas. The pool is small but has a shallow area where they have a few loungers and a small deep pool area. There are two hot tubs which get a bit more use but we definitely were able to find time to have them to ourselves several times during our stay. Plenty of seating and lounges outside as well. The Bar had several great servers.. including Christian who can make the best drinks... They also have their own small restaurant. It has the same menu every day but you can order "off menu" and get other things. I got creme brulee a couple times even though it wasn't on the menu. One of our servers Wayan was especially attentive and made the experience even better. The floor to ceiling wall of windows gave a beautiful ever changing view. The price of the Haven will give you pause though. We got a fairly decent deal but it was a good bit more than we spent on the mini-suite through the upgrade program.. we got a good discount off the full price.. but it was still fairly steep. In the end, we feel it was worth it to us because it made the trip so memorable, but in the end, one might be able to spend less and just resolve to eat at the better quality ala carte restaurants and perhaps try to get a vibe beach club pass and get something a little in between. Me.. I'm going to try for the upgrade again.. unless I can find a great deal on the Haven otherwise... I just found having the more serene and less busy space extra nice. We did enjoy spending some time in the waves pool area and one bartender "mama" made it so fun for everyone. There really developed a group of friendly faces there and it was fun to spend some time in that hype atmosphere.. when we wanted that. We did have meals at 5 specialty restaurants outside our Haven Experience. 1. Tropicana Room - easily our worst meal and we actually left without eating our entrees my fish was old and the steak was overcooked. So we went to the haven and our zen was restored. 2. Teppanyaki - fun time with an energetic and entertaining cook. The food was better than most of these types of restaurants I have been to. Definitely worth one of your nights. 3. Moderno - Brazilian Steak.. the salad bar and starters were good. They had sushi and that was good too. There was a lot of meat otherwise.. yeah.. I know.. but I wish they had had at least one seafood option with all that meat. 4. Wasabi Sushi - Alacarte.. but in the end we got a ton of food and it wasn't all that much money and it was very good quality. My husband ordered WAY too much but I would definitely advise a trip there if you like sushi. 5. Ocean Blue- Seafood.. and also an upcharge.. but it was good. Lobster, oysters king crab... all were definitely good. We did eat a little from the Garden buffet and it was generally good... crowded but plenty of options. We did three excursions. 1. Fishing in Honduras. Boat was clean and in good condition. We caught TUNA and it was a fun day with a few beers. 2. Snorkeling in Harvest Caye Belize. The group was large but we were split into smaller groups. The reef was nice and there were lots of fish to see. The staff was professional and plenty of people to assist. 3. Horseback Riding in Cozumel. This was a mix of history and riding in a cool, shaded trail. The horses were in good condition and well trained and the guides were knowledgeable. We also went to a little restaurant beach area for a quick stop and it was pretty and the beer was cold. The ship itself was great. There were plenty of places to explore and you forget how many people truly are on the boat at times. there is a lot to do.. or a little.. your choice. We had the unlimited drink package and felt it was well worth choosing it as one of our free at sea upgrades. The drinks were much better than what I have gotten at all inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. We were lucky enough to get on and off the boat first due to our Haven upgrade.. so we loved getting on the road home first thing in the morning when we were back in port. Overall.. a wonderful experience.. so many workers put their ALL into making it a great trip for us. Hanno the concierge, Raymond the butler, Adres the steward, Christian and "mama" (llewell I think) the bartenders.. Wayan our waiter. Just stars at what they do. Can't wait to do another trip! One last shout out to Roger Gustavson the Captain. We met him at a reception where he actually joined the band for a song... now THAT is a talent and just an incredible once in a lifetime experience. Food and dining was delicious and there was plentiful of different offerings. Room was clean and spacious. Entertainment was plentiful and enjoyable. Staff was helpful, nice, and entertaining. The embarkation and disembarkation was smooth and fast. The ship was large and provided a lot of different areas to explore and to participate in. The only part I wasn’t to fond of was the casino smelled like cigars and cigarettes really bad. Too many people were smoking at once and made it hard to enjoy the casino. Garden cafe had a theme night every night. The staff was very friendly and made the trip very enjoyable. The only port I didn’t enjoy was Belize. They were very over priced and not much to do there. The Atrium is a place where Multiple generations can share in trivia, movies or lectures. The crew were pleasant, professional. The guest services desk open 24 hours never a line. The entertainment was the best we have ever seen. Burn the Floor is A++, Specialty restaurants - fresh baked bread in La Cucina, Great steak in Cagney's, great breakfast at O'Sheehan's loved the mushrooms. Lots of Ice cream. Pastries are lacking, but the Bake Shop has good cupcakes. Skip Le Bistro, wouldn't recommend it. Cirque Dreams great dinner and show. Harvest Caye is safe, clean and beautiful. Families can really relax there. Food and drinks are very reasonable - much less than Disney land. The atmosphere is great and the butterfly exhibit had beautiful blue butterflies. Excursion tickets are given to you and you meet at the pier...no group tags or walking you to the place. Free style..eat when and where you want. We can hardly wait to go again and to take the grandkids. So much for kids to do on board and Harvest Caye has outstanding zip lines, pools, etc. Spa package - we used it about three times. This was our first Norwegian cruise. We were so impressed with the easy embarkation. It seemed so much quicker than I had experienced with other cruise lines. The salad bar was also very good. And I loved the grilled pineapple! The next evening we dined at Cirque Dreams and Steam. THEIR SHOW IS SO AMAZING!!! And the meal was delicious! Then we tried Teppanyaki. The chef was very entertaining, and the food was great. I don't recommend ordering the Wasabi drink, though. I think it may have caused me to get ill that night (it definitely wasn't the food, because my mom and I both ate the same thing and she was fine) We also ate at Cagney's Steakhouse. The service there was very good, but the prime rib was not very tender. However, the restaurant manager interviewed all of the guests to find out what they could do to improve their guests' dining experience. I felt assured that they are going to work on purchasing better cuts of meat, and I would definitely dine at Cagney's again, the next time I cruise with Norwegian. We also loved Shanghai Noodle Bar and Tropicana. Excellent food and service! The Million Dollar Quartet it also a must-see! These guys are so talented!!! And the comedy shows were hilarious! First, I am not sure where some of the less than stellar reviews of the ship come from. Anyone who criticizes the service or cleanliness or dining of the ship is simply misguided. TheThe staff was excellent, the service was superior, and the cleanly Ness and presentation of the ship was second to none. It was really telling in the Bahamas when Disney, Aida, Carnival and Royal Caribbean were all in port. My wife and I got so many people asking us about our shift. Literally hundreds of people from Aida were even looking over be at the ship watching how to good the staff was with fun music pool towels and water as we return. None of the other ships have anything close. Second, the speciality dining particulatly Modeebi and Ocean blue are not to be missed. All the food was great however those two places in particular are amazing. The Cirque show and dinner were worth the price. The ultimate beverage package was really good and has everything from moxed drinks to decent scotch. And if you are a scotch or bourbon drinker the upchaege for higher end is only pour difference, which is like $2-$5 for most upgrades. Third, on the Eastern Caribbean the ports were wonderful. Saint Thomas do yourself a favor and book the kayak hike snorkel eco-adventure to tour. It is well worth the price. Tortola is still rebuilding from the hurricane. However it is beautiful. The local people are so excited to have cruisers back and are the nicest people and any point you will ever go to. Nassau, is Nassau. Like many places in the world have to be careful in a few spots however Most people are very friendly. You do have to watch out for those people looking to make a quick buck off tourist particularly the taxicab drivers. But we did our own adventure went to John Watkins distillery and bearded clam along other places. Fourth, the adult pool is a lot of fun. I would not recommend the upgrade to the vibe beach club unless you want just peace and quiet around to lay out however there is no pool in the vibe. My wife and I enjoy socializing and having fun and the main adult pool area was a blast. The slides are great especially for kids. And they do have a kids pool area however we webt without our kids but it appeared that all of the families were having a great time. Fifth, and finally, my wife and I had a wonderful vacation.
