This was a great trip. Had a great time both onboard, and at the ports. There was always something to do, and the cruise ship staff was great. Ate at the buffet mostly, always quality food with enough options to always be able to try something different. The included restaurants were also very good. I've read lots of complaints about portion sizes being to small at the complimentary restaurants. PRO TIP: Instead of complaining about it online, all you had to do was ask for more. 1 minor comment: Karaoke song selection could have been better. Not to say it was bad, but the last Norwegian cruise I went on had a far wider song selection, so I figured it would have been the same. Still had a great time though! A lot of the complaints for this ship seem to center on it being crowded. Well, that could have been easily anticipated before hand, and honestly, except for the first day before the staterooms were ready, I didn't even notice. Also, THERE ARE NO "HIDDEN" CHARGES. If people would read all of the things they agree to beforehand, they would know this. Instead, people go on a trip having not read information that was provided to them, and then act like their ignorance is someone elses fault. Read Less

Traveled as a single it was nice to have an area to ourselves. Also at 5pm one of the crew help a little get together. the Studio Lounge was great to be able to grab a cup of coffee without traveling all over the ship. There were always water Orange juice coffee teal and cakes or pastries. The rooms were not very large nut that was to be expected they were comfortable for me. Junior was my stewart and their team did a great job. Also there is an outside bar port side of the 5-o'clock club where 'juneone' was the main attraction, very entertaining and responded well to tips. That was my go to bar as long as the gail force winds were not blowing. Being my first cruise to do this again I would do my own shore excursions and would pick a smaller ship. this large ship let to waites in many areas. Read Less

Wanted to go to Canada and this was the dates that matched our availability. On and off the boat worked smoothly and timely. While the boat had room for everyone, the days at sea were just too crowded. There was room for everyone but a venues and events were full up with folks and crowded. The Atrium was always crowded. Yes, it was cold and rainy so you couldn't use the pool deck and thus lost that physical space to put people and perhaps that's why I think it was crowded. Room was good but the sofa was too uncomfortable to use to sit on for more than a few minutes. So if you wanted to read you had to lay on the bed as it was impossible to find a quiet corner anyplace else on the boat. Complimentary entertainment was good, but the venues were crowded. Didn't attend the shows and pay the upcharge - if I wanted to pay for a show I'd have stayed at home in Vegas. Used most of the dining venues and they were all very good - food and service. And the continuous noise - some would call it background music but musical selection was not something you'd want to hum or dance to. It basically turns out to be background noise just every place you went. So if you wanted to talk to someone you had to talk loud and that just added to the noise. And for your customers with hearing aids, it really becomes noise. Read Less

This is a nice ship, but really BIG! There are not enough places to sit and visit, or play a board game, or write a note, or sit and plan your next day. The outdoor area is fun but small. The slides are great, but fall in to the smallest pool I've ever seen on a ship. The food is good, but we found nothing "great"; and, we had expected some seafood while around Maine, but alas, flounder only. The quality of the food in all complimentary venues is good, but nothing great, or memorable. The ports in the USA were great, but the 2 ports in Canada were lame, with little to nothing to see or do. Don'[t do their "Foodie" tour as it is a walk to the "market" and then 4 wee samples of foods which were fair at best. The pier restaurants in Canada were delicious, and the small shops and restaurant in Kennebunkport were awesome! Read Less

This was a bucket list cruise for the short change of seasons up to Maine and Canada. Our 5 cruise and have sampled them all except Holland...here's my review of the ship and cabin. First, know that all the aft cabins do NOT have the same width balcony's. Although ours was deep enough for either the two loungers and table or two chairs and table at any given time, the other balcony's on this level were a bit wider. Something to consider if you are booking aft. Cabin: 5 stars...These cabins are layed out very well. In addition to the closet/shelfs by the bed there are nice size cubbys all around the desk area. Also USB ports on each night lite at the bed was a nice surprise. The bathroom was great! Big shower with real door and plenty of room around the comode. Again, a lot of well designed shelves here as well. Hair dryer was in the living room under the desk which was a little weird but it worked. There are no plug outlets on the bedside wall including the bathroom. Only on the opposite wall at the desk area but there are three and again USB ports on either side of the bed. Crew: 5 stars...very accommodating and friendly. Always a kind word when you passed them in the halls. Leonardo was spot on with our cleaning and turndown service. Find Sy (real name is really long) the bartender at the poolside bar during the day and he will TAKE CARE of you! Hands down the best bartender on the ship. Tell him Jeff said hi! Shows: We saw all three going at the time...MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS ONLINE AND EARLY! You will be waiting in standby lines if you wait until you get on the ship! Brat Pack...Buyer beware there is a LOT of profanity and sexual suggestive scenes. With that said the music was awesome and if you were a Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sweet Sixteen fan you will love it. 3.5 stars After Midnight...If you like Jazz, especially big band this is a must see. Harlem Cotton Club era music of Duke Ellington with a very talented orchestra and the dancing...wow! Choir of Man...Get there early and try to sit in the front/middle and you become part of the show. These guys are really talented and very funny. It costs because it is a dinner show but you can get free ale all show and it's a roaring good time! Dining...Very different from your traditional dining room setup. There are several different venues that serve the same menu and of course the $$ restaurants. The Manhattan room was a lot of fun as they had a 4 piece jazz band performing sets during dinner, they did take long breaks. O'Shanahans was great...pub food and open 24 hours. A much better option than that midnight pizza, though they did have that as well at the buffet. The buffet was above average compare to other trips. Breakfast was satisfactory. Excursions...I won't list as this was the last run up to New England but overall well except Halifax hop on hop off but, terrible service but that was about it. Overall this was a nice ship...Not too large so you could get from one end to the other pretty easily. Elevators at each end worked fast and well. If you have the opportunity to get the Ultimate drink package go for it. The bartenders totally take care of you. Cheers... Read Less

Had an inside cabin which we love for afternoon naps, this was ready at 1:30pm. Ate at Moderno, Cagney's, Le Bistro and Teppyaniki--all were great. Love O'Sheehan's- always available and tasty. Saw After Midnight (OK), Brat Pack (great), Choir of Man (excellent) and game shows--lots of fun and laughter. Service was great-- everyone friendly and happy to help. In Portland we did a schooner tour which we booked privately and it was a beautiful day. Bar Harbor we did Oli's trolleys and were able to see beautiful sights on 2.5 hour tour. Canada was chilly and rain so we didn't do much. We participated in easy walk off and once the announcement was called we were out of terminal in less than 20 minutes and home by 11:10am. Leaving from NYC was great. We had a great evening the night before our cruise and were really excited to try a new cruise line for our honeymoon. Embarkation was very quick and easy, no troubles there. When we got to our room, we were pleased with the size, and aesthetics considering we paid for an inside cabin room. Then we set sail... They charge you extra for EVERYTHING. We are used to other cruise lines where you pay a heftier price, but it's worth it. Here are some of the charges we usually get for free on other cruise lines: $10 inside cabin movie rentals $250 Saunas for the week $30 Shows/Entertainment $$ Restaurants for good food Entertainment was awful. There were no theaters to watch movies, or have popcorn. They closed the hot tubs some evenings merely because no one was near by and used the "inclement weather" excuse despite the clear skies and calm seas. The shows were TERRIBLE. "Brat Pack" was supposed to be a throwback to the 80s, but all it was was 10 or so characters screaming at each other and using profane language. The story line made no sense. The dinner shows were awful (which you're charged to eat off one menu preselected for you which you cant make alterations). The venue is small and you better get there early or you'll be stuck sitting behind poles which impedes your view to the stage. Food was awful. They had pretty much the same menu on all of the complimentary restaurants, all you were changing was the ambiance. The food in the "Garden Cafe" buffet all tasted bland or flavorless. I mean EVERYTHING. Either they weren't using enough ingredients or their ingredients were of really poor quality. Everything seemed off - like fruit tart with chocolate custard? Watered down nacho cheese. Eclairs with bland chocolate filling? We decided to try two speciality restaurants, the Brazilian steakhouse moderno and food republic. service at moderno was was worse than your typical chain restaurant. We were never asked for refills, deserts, coffee, etc. We certainly felt forgotten which was interesting because we were in the middle of the room. Oh, and none of the desserts were actually typical Brazilian desserts. Food republic was better, but should a guest really have to pay extra to eat okay food? Service was the worst. Bad attitudes, inflexible, mug faces, etc. And when they weren't seemingly unhappy, they were obnoxious roaming around yelling and singing trying to get people to wash hands or eat their tasteless foods. The aesthetics of the ship was really nice. Its a new ship and it was evident and nice to look at. However, if you wanted a quiet place with a view, to just lounge and relax - good luck! They had no reading room or quiet board gaming lounge. (Actually, their library was perhaps a 10x10 claustrophobic room). The ports were awful. Perhaps would've been better with better weather, but there was not much to do anywhere so when we wanted to relax and have some downtime.. we were stuck in our room where movie rentals were $10 a movie. Needless to say - we couldn't wait to get off the boring ship (and folks we met throughout the last few days couldn't wait to get off either). Luckily for us, disembarkation was smooth and quick! Sorry Norwegian, we wont be sailing with you anytime in the near future. Read Less

We have previously been a little disappointed with NCL, but this cruise impressed us greatly. Service was outstanding, especially housekeeping and waiters, and everyone was always so happy and friendly! Relaxed atmosphere of New England and Canada helped to melt stress. The many activities seemed to keep the passengers busy and happy, we chose more to walk on the 8th floor boardwalk, and found many quiet places to sit and unwind. We booked our own excursions and were very happy. People who booked through the ship were somewhat disappointed. The food on board was the best we ever tasted (4 cruises experience, all very good!). We mostly ate in Taste, but I know the same chefs prepare the food for the entire ship. We heard a couple going on shore for an excursion discussing how excited they were to get a steak on shore, and we couldn't stop laughing, knowing that the food onboard could compete with anything Read Less

Friends chose this itinerary, but we had never been here before. Arrival: we booked the ship’s transfer to the port. Although I would still suggest this option, expect chaos. We arrived at the airport about 9:30 am and discovered too few vans for too many passengers. Our friends arrived in the early afternoon and also discovered chaos. Nonetheless, unexpected NYC events can completely mess up your travel to the ship so take that into consideration. Check-in process: Total chaos. We were separated from our elderly traveling companions because they were on a different deck. We were told they could wait for us to check in and come back and go with them through their check in, but we told them to just muddle through on their own. Since our check in took at least an hour and half, the ship’s rep’s advice would have meant a 4 hour check in process because the line kept getting longer. Glad we ignored her. We were given the health forms as we entered the interminable line, but not everyone was. Then we were given the Canadian customs/immigration form after we made the last turn in the concertina line. So many people were filling in the forms at the counter, further slowing the line. Meals The layout was weird, with two main dining rooms and two "sub-main" dining rooms, so you never knew where a wait might be. Figure out when you might want dinner each night and make reservations quickly. Good spots fill quickly and long lines were evident outside the dining rooms. Day 1 Lunch at Garden Inn More chaos, because of course this was the only place to have lunch. It is a fragmented area, with food stations and seating that both go way back. The different sides had some of the same, and some different stations. And don’t tell your party you will meet there because finding anyone is next to impossible—wear your hiking shoes because you will be hiking all over the place. Day 1 Dinner. We chose the Manhattan dining room, which was a mistake. They had dinner music, which I would call more like lounge music. Much too loud to allow for a pleasant dinner conversation. Plus the acoustics are bad in this room, with lots of hard surfaces so jus the normal conversation and clattering is quite loud. I felt like I had spent 2+ hours in a bar, yelling to have a conversation. Service was quite slow as well. We arrived at 5:20 pm for our 5:15 reservation and did not finish dessert (no coffee either!) until 7:40. Day 2 At sea Breakfast Taste and Savor are identical dining rooms across from each other on Deck 6. Although noisy, they are (at least for a busy breakfast) still quieter. Service was good and options were varied. Lunch at Taste Decent options. Good service (hey, she said my eyes reminded her of the Bermuda ocean, so obviously she was a great server). Day 3 Portland Breakfast at Taste Slow service Lunch: ashore Dinner at Moderno (Brazilian steakhouse) Interesting side dishes on buffet, but nothing truly amazing. Some meats were incredibly tough, like the filet mignon. One of our party had an outer piece of lamb that she said was very good, with the crust from the fire and seasonings. I liked both types of lamb, but at the end of the meal we all felt like we had just overdosed on meat. Dessert options were limited but they are in the main restaurants as well. Day 4 Unplanned sea day Breakfast. Same Lunch at Taste Dinner at Supper Club. Comedian/magician Christ Blackmore was pretty good and funny. Note that you aren’t given dinner options here. You are seated and they bring bread, then a tomato salad, then a dinner plate of steak medallions, and a bread pudding for dessert. I was unhappy with this concept as the main dining room had options I really wanted to try. Day 5 St Johns Breakfast at Taste. Slow but not terribly so. There are 2-3 varying options each day but the rest of the menu appears static. Lunch: ashore Dinner at Taste. Dinner reservations at 6, and we were seated by about 6:10. Dinner ended at 8 so we did not make any shows. Seemed a bit slow to me. Activities Day 1. Aaron Sanchez of the Food Channel was on board and did a cooking demo in the Atrium. Obvious, there is no way to cook in the Atrium so it was more of an assembly show, but he was personable and that was worth 45 min of our time, especially since there wasn’t much else exciting going on. Mostly he was flogging his wine but it was still interesting enough. One of our companions went to the Margaritaville café to listen to guitar music but as it was very windy and chilly, that event was cancelled. We again entered the ho-hum zone for activities. He was disappointed that this ship did not have the chamber music or similar that he loved on his first cruise (this was his second). Day 3: Unexpected sea day. Lots of bored and restless passengers, or so it seemed. They laid on a cooking demo in the Atrium (not so much cooking as assembling, again) and the staff brought out dozens and dozens of folding chairs to accommodate the growing crowd that ended up being SRO anyway. Other options were trivia (few and far between), and origami lessons. Day 4: After the Supper Club show, a few of our party made it to the evening show. Some noted that the shows are different times each night, so you don’t always have a 7:30 option, for instance. Anyway, we did get to the musical For The Record: The Brat Pack. High energy, very loud—unpleasantly so at times—and with flashing bright lights. The singing and dancing were really good. Day 7: ho hum. A few trivia games in the atrium where the crowds have been large. We did our own thing for shore excursions because we weren't sure if all our party would be well enough to do things (one suffers from seasickness and was trying new meds). Generally cheaper and more flexible than ship's excursions, and their big buses were everywhere we were. Keep in mind these ports are not heavily visited by cruise ships and don't have the infrastructure like you'd find in the Caribbean. Also, the local communities can't support multiple tour operators. We grabbed a taxi in every port but had a wait in one, and were very lucky to get the last taxi in another. Read Less

The Escape has stylish and thoughtful decor throughout, which extends to their well-designed cabins. Our room was quite comfortable, and the included access to thermal spa area was a highlight, as we used it every day due to unseasonably chilly and wet weather. All of our specialty dining meals were indeed special experiences. The few meals we had in the included dining rooms were very non-special, approaching disappointing.. Our primary complaints were the seemingly endless fees for everything, and the overall feeling of being jam-packed with thousands of other guests, with very few areas of escape the crowd other than the thermal spa. Also, NCL seems to have little interest in gathering feedback from their guests, which seems strange for a service based business. I think we will try a different cruise line for our next cruise vacation, because our impression is that NCL's main interest is in making money from their guests. Read Less
