Chose this cruise because it was leaving Rome at a time we wanted to cruise. It was our 20th Anniversary , and the cruise was a surprise for my wife. We have always cruised an Carnival and did note the the people on this cruise were somewhat older then we have experienced. The ship (Epic) was was nice and clean, and we dined in the upscale restaurants so the food was very good there. The food in the main dining rooms was as expected. The one mystery we still have is why do all cruise lines have the most wonderful looking deserts that have almost no taste at all. Thought maybe Carnival was the only one, but Norwegian is the same. We finally just gave up on deserts and had some ice cream. There were several things that left a bad taste with us and we have decided we will NEVER sail with Norwegian again. The first was the ICE BAR. They have a ice bar on the ship that everything is supposedly made of ice. The bar, the chairs, the tables, etc.... I say supposedly, because we never got to go in. Why, you may ask? Here's why. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE 20 euro to go in!!!!!! Just to look in!!!! I was told "But Sir, we give you 2 FREE drinks". I don't want 2 free drinks, I just would like to see what it looks like inside. By the way, you aren't giving me 2 free drinks. You are forcing me to "BUY" 2 drinks at 10 euro apiece just to go in. I spent over $3000 for this cruise and I can't just "Look" in the door? Needless to say we did not go in their stupid Ice Bar. The other thing that pissed me off is the $13.50 per person daily gratuity charge they put on the bill. Supposedly it's for "My Convenience" that they automatically add it to the bill. I have always in the past tipped those who wait on us in the restaurants, as well as out cabin Stewart and anyone else who makes our trip more enjoyable. I went to the desk to ask the charges be removed and was told they could not remove the charges, "But here is a form you can fill out and submit it to our main office and a adjustment will be made" She then took out a folder and added my name and cabin number to a LONG LIST OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD REQUESTED THE SAME!!!!! So, ok fine. Got home and filled out the form and submitted it like I was supposed to. It says the adjustment will be done in two weeks. It has been seven weeks and no response. I have resubmitted it, also with no response. I am now in the process of disputing the $189 gratuity charge. This nickel and dime stuff is something we haven't seen before. If you want to charge me an extra $189 for the cruise, that would have been fine, but don't keep adding little charges throughout my cruise. One of the reasons I do this is so that I can pay one fee and just relax for seven days knowing everything is taken care of. We will most definitely never cruise on Norwegian again, and I have made it a point to share my experience with everybody I run into. Who knows, maybe somebody from Norwegian will actually read this. This concludes my rant. Read Less

This Cruise I chose to take my Dad and sister to have some quality time. The ports were amazing, the Ship was amazing, is amazing. is HUGE, has many things to do, you never get bored, the staff are something else, We sailed the EPIC from NCL. We boarded in Rome, excellent, light boarding process, and did the whole turn until we debark in Rome the following week. The staff are amazing, there to help, Whom I had excellent chemistry with were: Hernan Gonzalez, Maiter D at Garden Cafe, SASA CVJETICANIN, Asst Maiter D, Joy Ramirez, and Josephine Siew at Oshehans, Andre at the Shore Excsurson desk, excellent Human Being, there to help, super nice, My Cabin Stwart, Hadi, always there to serve you, I mean, the staff are well trained and are people you can count on on that Ship. Everybody are very nice. Ports of Call, Love them every single one of them. Shore excursions very nice, when In Livorno, Florence Pisa, take the Tour with John super nice guy, this was the Pisa and Wince Tasting, excellent light tour, pretty complete actually. The Monaco, Cannes Monte Carlo experience, Marseille we went on our own, nice stop. This is a very cool cruise, I recommend. Read Less

This was our third cruise and having done Thomson and Carnival cruises we were recommended Norwegion Cruise Liners by travel agents. We did two back to back cruises with NCL EPIC starting at Barcelona doing 7 days to Italy, Cannes, Palma De Mallorca and back to Barcelona (staying on board), then 6 days to Cartagena, Malaga, Lisbon and sailing back to Southampton. We chose this specifically as the wife hated flying and sailing back seemed a good idea having stressed about the flight to Barcelona from UK. Entertainment Week 1, the ship seemed geared up with some good entertainment, Beatles tribute band and other Legions show and good dancers Burn the Floor show. We looked forward to some comedians but other than a comedian magician who could have held an 8yrs old birthday party, there was nothing put on anywhere on the ship for adults. Week 2, the ship seemed to dip and forgot about booking any acts (in our opinion). All week one shows were repeated and apart from an amazing Cirque De Dreams show which we had pre-booked (which was excellent), it was very disappointing. They had useful interactive services around the ship to see whats going on and where but when we went to a Trivia Quiz in the Bliss Lounge scheduled for 2pm one day having just checked the interactive screens (and we had the right day) there was nothing on. Food Food was good in volume but limited in variety. Overall it was not anywhere near as good as our earlier cruises. Organisation The ship's management need taking to task on this and we're hoping we might be one of the "selected" individuals sent feedback questionnaires but I doubt it as we withdrew our gratuities ($27 dollars per day per couple) but this in itself was a battle with Reception Services Staff who kept fobbing us off saying you can only do it on the last day as we automatically keep applying it each day! What a nonsense. All tannoy messages could not be heard in cabins, you had to open doors to corridors to hear any announcements. In the interests of safety and effective communication I see this as flawed! There was limited TV in the room just repeated films I think we watched Dirty Dancing 4 times but you could pay extra for movies if you wanted! Having paid £3k for a cruise, I didn't feel we should have to pay for very basic entertainment. The charges for bottled water on board were higher than in local ports - disgraceful. There was no information pack in our cabin to explain important essentials that you would expect, no price lists for our mini bar. We discovered from next door again more exorbitant charges to use, refill and add a little more to our on board costs if we were to make use of it. The last day dis-embarking was absolutely appalling. There was no structure, no organisation, no communication and no management anywhere. Its called Free Style cruising but it felt like free for all. Folks tried to line up at the one point of exit (yes 4000 trying to leave on one exit point) and scuffles almost broke out where people were coming down stairs and escalators trying to short cut and push in. The queue was from one end of the ship to the other but there was no string lines which you would expect or staff managing the process to make sure if was effective. We waited nearly 2hrs in the queue trying to get off the ship and we were near the front. People with us had pre-booked planes and trains and were becoming increasingly frustrated with the wait when there was no communication or announcements about the delays. We were told the evening before with a newsletter you could use the "easy walk off" method as we were not dependent on transfers but this was far from easy and had to be the worst most chaotic method I have ever seen. I could not understand why staff would not want to apply some order to this as there is obvious and sensible systems which can be applied to leave the ship in an orderly and safe fashion without the stress and anxiety we faced. To have this on the point of exit just reinforced for us, that the we had been right to withdraw the gratuities ($351 dollars) for this debarkle. Wi-Fi and internet use was again an added charge!. Shore excursions were extortionate ($2-300 dollars per person). Excursion services provided no maps of local resorts to help you navigate your way thereby trying to encourage you to book with them as they knew where they were going. Some literature was given out daily but this was basic. As an Englishman, I happily tip good and exceptional service but this was neither. Would I sail again, YES, would I sail with NCL again, NO. Would I recommend NCL to friends, NO. Read Less

Where do we begin? We travelled on The Norwegian Epic on 4Th September 2011 for 7 nights and have just got back home . We live in Spain and flew from Malaga to Barcelona and stayed a couple of nights in Barcelona before the Cruise on The Epic. We booked this cruise for our 5Th Wedding Anniversary and pre booked a Deluxe Romance Package for a very reasonable price. We got a taxi from the hotel in central Barcelona to the port..this was approx 15 euros as they had a "small" supplement on to the actual cost for your baggage in the boot..The check in process was so smooth and very easy..although we did arrive early, but we managed to check in and sort our money out before we went on board...We paid cash and there is a separate cash desk that you can put your money onto your card as well as the standard debit/credit card desks! We were allowed on board at 11am and were in total awe at the size of this monster! We have travelled with Royal Caribbean before and as some people know they are not small!! This is colossal!! We had a couple of hours to wander the ship before we were allowed into our cabin at 13.00. One thing we did notice is how small the swimming pools were and the sunbeds were always reserved and had towels on them despite it being a policy of NCL not to hog the beds, but they do not monitor it and there is no control over it. When we arrived at our balcony room we were so pleased and happy with it...The bed was bigger than we expected as was the shower and toilet which were separate!! How nice is that? The balcony is small and cute with a couple of chairs and a small table..There is plenty of space for your clothes and other odds and ends that you may have. We also had our Sparkling Wine and Chocolate Strawberries which we ordered in our Romance Package with a welcome letter and the Itinerary for the week ahead..We were made to feel very special and welcome. In the first 24 hours we had some rather excitable youngsters in a balcony 2 doors away who were loud for a while, but we didn't hear them after that(maybe someone had a quiet word) and was a very peaceful week after that... Our Room Attendant was Marvin and he was an absolute Diamond. He was always smiling and asking about your day and what you were doing later etc. Basically that was one thing we noticed with ALL the staff in that they were very friendly and very professional in everything they did and deserve all the praise they get! Now for the Entertainment! It was very hit and miss..We started on Sunday night with The Blue Man Group who were absolutely superb! Best show by a mile. Monday we went to see Stephen Sorrentino who we were looking forward too, but he was extremely disappointing. And The Legends was so bad it was really hard to get to the end of the show.. Cirque was awesome and totally mesmerising , but the food was standard. The food throughout the ship was very very good and we often ate far too much! The speciality restaurants were also hit and miss.. Teppanyaki was VERY overrated and we were left feeling very disappointed .It is for entertainment purposes only and nothing more! The Le Bistro which was part of our Romance Package was standard also.It started off fantastic with a complimentary bottle of wine and a fantastic starter. Our waitress Mai was fantastic, but the main course for my wife was very poor..She had cold new potatoes and complained that they were cold and not cooked, so she complained to the waitress who ordered her some fresh steamed vegetables and more potatoes, but yet AGAIN the potatoes were cold, so she just left them rather than complain again.... Cagney's was absolutely fantastic and is NCL signature restaurant and it lived up to its reputation. Shanghais was also superb with a great choice of food and desserts. I have tried to explain as much as I can without going into big details and it getting boring, so I will leave it there... All in all a great cruise , and we would recommend it too families with young kids, but not for young couples, hence why we will be looking for a smaller ship next time... Read Less
