We really enjoyed the cruise. Normally we prefer the larger “fun” ships with NCL such as the Epic, Getaway and Escape but with five ports of call and only one day at sea it really didn’t matter not having the waterslides and other activities found only on these ships. Some (negative) general comments first. Although we still enjoy cruising with NCL, we have noticed increasing costs and certain cuts since we first started with them 6 years ago. Perhaps they are just following a trend in the industry but the changes have been noticeable. Some examples: - Adding a room service fee, first for overnight orders and now at all times. - Not allowing people to bring food to their room (thankfully that ended very quickly when it was announced!) - Not allowing people to bring non-alcoholic beverages on board. - Charging extra for certain dishes in the main dining rooms (looks like this was stopped) - Sharp increases in the cost of their drinks as compared to bars/restaurants on land. A couple of years ago they had these “premium” drinks such as a Dark and Stormy for $18 as compared to $12 for other drinks. These prices were not on the menu on this cruise. - Less interesting options at the buffet during theme nights. They had crab legs in the main buffet on our first cruise on the Epic. - Charging $2 more for the same volume of Heineken in a draft at O’Sheehan’s than what you get in the bottle. Both the glasses they use as well as the bottles are 12 oz. You can buy both! Maybe it is just me but I would have assumed a pint class would be used at a pub. I think it is important for passengers to provide their feedback, both positive and negative, directly to NCL for these and any other items you want to bring up. I normally do after each cruise! Now moving on! Itinerary - We started with one day at sea, followed by stops in Barbados, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Maarten and St. Thomas. - We would have preferred having the sea day on our last day of cruising. Would have been a great way to relax after getting off the ship five days in a row. However, I think this would require reversing the order of the stops as Barbados is the furthest destination. The ship - As I mentioned earlier, the ship is smaller and doesn’t have the water slides, rope courses, climbing wall, large sports deck (though it does have a smaller one), etc that you will find on some of their bigger ships . - Some of the areas (such as the theater and main restaurants) were really cold, more so than I would normally expect on a cruise ship. It was mentioned by a number of other travellers we spoke with too. I would suggest bringing a shawl, light jacket, long sleeve shirts, etc. The theatre was probably the worst. Getting on and off the ship - Embarkation went smoothly. We boarded between 1:00 and 1:30, with our cabin being available within an hour or so. - Our cabin was on deck 5 which made if very convenient to get on and off the ship from deck 4 at each port of call. - Disembarkation was really easy and stress free. We used the self assist option so we were able to keep our bags with us overnight as opposed to leaving them out by 11 pm the night before. One major difference here with self assist is that we didn’t need to rush off the boat early as we have experienced on the Epic, Getaway and Escape when using this option. Transfers between the airport and the Pan American Pier - We spent the night in Isla Verde before the cruise and used an UberXL to get there for around $14. In general, Uber is an inexpensive and convenient way to travel around San Juan. - On the day you disembark, you have multiple options for the airport when you exit the terminal. - NCL’s is probably the most expensive of them all and I would not recommend it. - When you first leave the terminal, there will be a series of private shuttles charging $10 per person. They will also wait until they feel they have enough passengers. I would also suggest that you skip this option. - If you walk a little further, maybe 40 feet, you will find the regular taxi line. Fares are regulated and costs $21 plus $1 per piece of luggage to the airport. You will first speak to a dispatcher who will provide you with a paper confirming the cost. On our day, there was an exception where they were adding an extra $3.50 because the usual route to the airport was closed due to construction. - It does appear that Uber is an option but the fares at the time were similar and involved a bit of wait before a car could arrive. Cabin - We were on deck 5 with a window. Note, on deck 4 the windows are portholes. - We were three, 2 adults and a child. There is a bunk bed that folds out from the wall. I don’t see how a second child could be accommodated in this cabin as there is no convertible sofa or anything and little to no room for an extra cot. - There are plenty of drawers (6) as well as some shelves in the closet. However, we still found it useful having brought magnetic hooks as well as some extra hangers. Food - We find the food at the complimentary restaurants to be more than sufficient for us so we don’t typically eat at any of the speciality options. - Of the two main dining rooms, we preferred Aqua over the Venetian. This has nothing to do with the food since they have the same menu but rather we found the service to be faster. Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact it is smaller. - The food at O’Sheehan’s was excellent. - The food is also excellent at Bamboo but reservations are required if not at least recommended. - We had supper one night at the buffet. It was ok but it is not as good as we experienced six years ago when we first started cruising on NCL. The theme nights and associated options just seemed better back then to be honest. - There is room service but NCL charges a convenience fee of close to $8 per order. When we first started cruising with them, there was no fee. Then they added one for overnight orders which looks like they have extended to all hours. Bars – pay attention to the glass size used for drafts at O’Sheehan’s - Didn’t really hang out at any of the bars on this trip but we did have supper one night at O’Sheehan’s, where the food is very good and is complimentary. - They only had two beers on tap, one of them Heineken. I would have expected more at a pub to be honest. - Note, they are serving their draft beer in 12 oz glasses, not 16 oz (pints) that you would normally be accustomed to at a pub. You can also order Heineken in 12 oz bottles. - For some reason, the same size in a draft costs $2 more than the bottle. The reasoning provided was that the quality is better with the draft something that I don’t agree with when it comes to beers like Heineken. I wished I had noticed the size before ordering the draft. Activities - The fitness centre is more spacious on the Dawn as compared to the bigger ships. You don’t have that cramped feeling. - The jogging track is on deck 13 and also has less traffic than what I am accustomed to on the Getaway and Escape. - On deck 7, you can walk, not run, along the promenade all the way around the ship. - For the first time we played shuffleboard. Our child was really into it and became his new ping pong obsession/replacement while onboard. There are two on deck 7 and one on deck 13. - Speaking of ping pong, there are two tables on deck 13 near the sports deck. However, they are in a spot that receives a lot of wind when the ship is moving so it really affects the ball. Pool, hot tubs and chairs - There is one pool and four hot tubs on deck 12. There is an additional hot tub at the front of the ship on deck 13. - The kids’ area at the back of the ship has another hot tub as well. - We didn’t have any problems finding chairs either in the sun or in the shade during our one sea day. Entertainment - The production shows are not at the same level as the ones we’ve experienced on the Epic, Getaway and Escape. If you are expecting something similar then you will be disappointed. - The comedian on the other hand was fantastic. He had two nights of shows in the main theatre, one family friendly and one 18+ and both were great. There is no separate comedy club having nightly shows. Splash Academy – Kids club - There weren’t as many children on this cruise and consequently not many using Splash Academy, including ours. - The staff members were really friendly and trying to get children involved but I can see how with few other kids around at the kids club, your child may not want to spend much time there. - Luckily, ours was meeting people on the sports deck and playing with them after getting back on board at the end of the day. We chose this cruise because of its remarkable itinerary, as did eight of our friends- in a total of 5 cabins. Although not as relaxing as our previous amazing Epic transAtlantic cruise 11/4/18, it was a wonderful opportunity to stop and see islands I had not yet ever visited before to decide if I want to return to them again, despite being so busy almost daily. I had never previously been to Bonaire, St. Lucia, Barbados nor St. Kitts. I did shore excursions at six of the 8 islands we visited l, to better experience them, partly because of the $50/cabin per destination early booking enticement. Also, Many of the ship staff were equally as professional & servicial as on previous NCL cruises, on the Escape, Getaway and Epic, which continues to be a major reason for our choosing NCL repeatedly in past 3 years. Our cabin steward, Paul Navarro was wonderful, and Marneil & Jaylord in the Venetian restaurant were extremely attentive and friendly handling the needs of our table for 10 for 5 of the 10 nights. Those 3 went above and beyond expectations. We kept requesting Marneil for her excellent service. Kasey & Alvin, and Jasmine in Aqua were very cordial and more NCL assets. The food is excellent overall, but some standout examples were exceptional- coconut shrimp (Aqua), mushroom soup and chocolate Napoleon (Bistro), braised beef short ribs over pasta (Aqua), paella (Aqua), surf & turf (Cagney’s), calamari, and gnocchi with pesto (la Cucina), and shrimp quesadilla and skirt steak (Los Lobos), among others. The sidecar in Cagneys & Tropical Paloma in Los Lobos were excellently prepared drinks. The daily soup offerings in Garden café were only average to a soup hound , as I am. This was my 23rd lifetime cruise, 6 now with NCL, the 4 most recent, plus Starward & Southward Long ago in my teens. I know what I’m looking for in future cruises. The entertainment was excellent on the Dawn this trip, especially the aerialists and vocalists/dancers, only exceeded by the entertainment on the Epic crossing, especially the Epic Beatles. Keep up the good work. Read Less

This is our fourth cruise with Norwegian. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the cruise line. I like the smaller ships like the Dawn because you do not have to make reservations for the shows and the main dining. I have had really good experiences so far on all four of our cruises with Norwegian. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. This trip had a great itinerary. Nine beautiful Southern Caribbean Islands and only one sea day. I was worried at first that it would be too many islands at one time but it didn't feel rushed. We did excursions for almost every island except for two, but it still felt very relaxing. Enjoyed the cruise so much we have booked a cruise for next year with Norwegian. A seven day Mediterranean out of Greece. We will be on the Dawn again. Now I have something to look forward to for 2020. Read Less

Great size ship. Not too big. Norwegian Ships always provides first class service, amenities, food and entertainment. The ports of call were varied and safe. The excursions were awesome. Couldn’t beat the weather. The registration and de-barking process was swift and efficient. The speciality restaurants were as fine as the best in any City. The waiters are extremely well trained and attentive to one’s every need. Our cabin steward was new;; however, he went out of his way to perform his responsibilities very well. The hostesses, and bar personnel learned your favourites quickly and by the third day knew what you wanted before you placed an order. The ship was spotless and employees were present everywhere cleaning and putting final touches on the ships interior. The constant attention to the hygiene of everyone on board is remarkable. The washy washy, happy happy, theme made the process fun and effortless. We have cruised on other lines; however, we now patronize Norwegian due to the consistent delivery of all of the above. We chose this cruise for 3 main reasons: cost, ports of call and our time on a future cruise credit was expiring. If you like a casual atmosphere in dining times, options and dress, this is the cruise for you. They have 3 options for breakfast, lunch and dining that don’t require extra costs or making reservations. Shorts and t-shirts are acceptable in all venues, including dining, which surprised us. At other lines, pants are required at dinner. This was a little too casual for us since the condition of some of the shorts and t-shirts wouldn’t qualify for appropriate. Food was typical of a cruise, nothing really outstanding, if anything, several items were repeated during the 10 day cruise. They do ask if you are allergic to any items and will offer to personalize dishes. We happened to stay in an interior room, cabin 10167, which presented a noise problem. This room has a ‘Hotel Store’ on one side and one above it as well as an electrical room above. This created constant noise issues late at night and very early in the morning. We complained on the 2nd night after figuring out what was happening. They apologized and said they would investigate. It happened the 3rd night and I called immediately when I heard the banging and the thumping and the dragging of something across the floor. They sent someone out to investigate. It happened the 4 night, and suddenly, we received a tray of 4 chocolate covered strawberries. This did not solve the problem. It continued to happen throughout the cruise and nothing was resolved, nor were we offered a change in cabin nor a credit. The entertainment was excellent and the quality of the shows and variety of entertainers too. The ports of call were one of the highlights, absolutely beautiful! The ship offered excursions that were very expensive and one minus is that they are conducted by local people who happen to be the driver as well as the guide, and some were not very understandable. Many of us struggled to understand. Embarkation was very smooth but disembarkation was a little confusing since they had us going up and down and from the front of the ship to the middle, while carting our luggage. We really don’t think this line is the right one for our type of cruising. Read Less

This is the first time cruiseing with NCL and our experience was great. My only down side was the age range of the cruisers since we are a younger couple. My big plus was how great our room was and how clean and how the turn down service was amazing. Our stateroom steward was Eko Miftakhul Najib he made our cruise experience great. Also the cruise director was amazing and keeping the party going and I loved his jokes. The dinning was very good but desert options where not my favorite. The excursions where diverse and every since excursion was memorable and good experience. The ship was updated and the staff was friendly. The photo center was great we enjoyed the photos that where purchased. We enjoyed taking photos from one paticular photographer I can’t remember her name exacts but she was a younger girl from South Africa. She was great and she made our trip memorable. Read Less

The Ship is nice. I like the layout and the pool deck layout as well. The food was good and 99% of the staff was really amazing. I had the following issues. We were seated in Venetian the first night and after 15 minutes had to find someone to help us because no one was. Then we got great service. After dinner we went to the pool deck to look around and noticed a lot of the lights strung across of the top of the ship were burned out, which made me sad. That should never happen and should be fixed between every cruise. Normally our casino cards are in our room the first night, but they never showed up. I was told they may have went to the room we had before our upgrade was processed. I've gotten upgrades in the past and that didn't happen. Normally our cabin steward introduces themselves formally the first or second day. We met him only because we went to the room and he was working on it. He didn't formally introduce himself. Also when i inspected the cabin the first day there were hairs in the sink and on the table. I was relatively clean but the hairs were a first for NCL for me. Never saw that before. The Café (Buffet) was fine, but the choices were pretty limited. It would have been nice if they utilized the entire length of the buffet on the one side so there were more choices. Okay, now for the positive. I loved the Casino Staff. They were amazing. I felt like i was going to meet with friends every night i went in and was welcomed by everyone. Awesome job in the Casino. Bartenders were amazing and very attentive. I rarely had to wait long for a drink which is tops in my book. Restaurant Staff was amazing and attentive. The food in the complimentary restaurants was very good. I wish there was one or two nights with something a little more special like Escargot or Lobster night or something that would have had one night stand out. But i like the options that were available and everything was cooked perfectly. The destinations on this cruise were great and the tour options were good. I really enjoyed the cruise overall and have to say that the Staff made up for any shortcomings. Read Less

This cruise visited 6 islands in addition to Puerto Rico and was a new itinerary for us. We like the smaller ship and were familiar with the general layout of the restaurants and activity areas. Our restricted view cabin had great storage but was small and had no chair or small couch other than a stool at the desk/vanity, so I guess one sacrifices storage for seating. We had four dining experiences in the specialty restaurants and found the experience to be very nice. The main dining room can be a bit noisy and we found we liked going to Aqua better since it was a bit smaller. I think NCL trains their staff well as everyone we encountered was friendly and had a word of greeting. The entertainment was rather predictable, some I liked better than others, and the staff offered a wide variety of activities. The cruise director, Robert, was excellent, one of the best we have every had. He was friendly and interacted with everyone he met. I liked going to the Library and getting the daily puzzles. We were able to find some sheltered areas to enjoy (not too much sun or wind). On this particular cruise we took all but one of the ship's excursions per port. Only one of them was a bit disappointing, the afternoon beach break on St. John's. I wish we could have stayed a bit longer in each port since most of the islands were very close together but I understand the port authority and costs to dock may influence the hours the ship can be at the pier. I am not sure that I would do this same itinerary again since the islands seem a bit of the same; however, in the winter, the weather can't be beat. Maybe we will have to try the Eastern Caribbean. We chose this cruise of the Southern Caribbean so we could visit some islands we had never been to. Staff: As usual, the NCL staff is their strongest asset, and the crew could not have been nicer to us (and everyone) during the cruise. Our steward, Flavia St. Rose, provided exceptional and friendly service, taking care of our requests to use ice bucket liners (which we provide) and to empty the fridge in stride. Poolside service was uneven, but generally ok. Pool bars great. Restaurants/Bars: Jeffrey, a bartender we met on a previous NCL cruise was also aboard and that was a great time in the Mojito Bar. Everyone has a favorite, and Jeffrey is ours. Meals and service in the Venetian(main) dining room were great as well. We did not care, once again, for the food or service in La Cuchina, and did not try Moderno this voyage. This was our first encounter with the Los Lobos restaurant, and we enjoyed that very much. It's a tequila themed bar and Alexander made us several great drinks, the chicken mole enchilada and the Carne Asada were great. Make sure to get the elote (mexican grilled corn) and table side guacamole. They will take the corn off of the cob for you and it's a great dish to share. Le Bistro continues to provide upscale experience if you can make it through the smoke in Gatsby bar (more on that later). Cagney's was great thanks to the help of Matthew, their sommelier. Garden Court buffet was uninspired and best avoided. Public Areas: Pool furniture is pretty uncomfortable and old. Atrium is nice. Quiet space: They have taken the quiet space at the front of the ship and turned it into the Bliss Lounge. During the day it's always set up for Art auctions. I'd much rather have a quiet area to go and read other than the library, but then, reading is not spending money, is it? Still. The art auction thing is starting to get to be a pain. The ship's tour (Behind the scenes) through cruise next was great although I've now seen the stardust dressing room in each ship I've been on but never the stage or backstage or the control booth. Cruise Next was present and got their message out but not obnoxious as it can be some times. Embarkation/Disembark: Both very very smooth, by far the smoothest in the 10 cruises we've taken. All that is well and good, but here is the one major problem with this ship that will keep us from booking another cruise on the Dawn. Smoke. Smoking is allowed in the Casino as well as the Cigar Lounge, and they both open into the area making up Gatsby bar and entrance to Le B. The smoke leakage into that area make Gatsby bar unusable (for us). It didn't matter if the door was closed, smoke was wafting into the common area. Several smokers also mentioned the smoke inside of the Cigar Lounge was intolerable. Perhaps they were having a mechanical difficulty with the ventilation. For those so inclined, smoking is also allowed in the Bimini Bar (Deck 13 outside) and (it seems) all along deck 7 promenade. A letter (Dear Tony) to the Hotel director about the smoke from Casino and Cigar Lounge in Le Bistro and Gatsby received no response. Cabin: Standard balcony. Comfortable bed, couch just ok. Water was cut off without warning one morning for maintenance, according to Guest Services. Our toilet ceased to flush for several hours but was fixed somewhere else since no one ever came to our cabin or bothered to let us know the problem was resolved. TV is very small but adequate. Lack of electrical outlets (1) is a problem. Be sure to bring some kind of outlet strip, getting one with usb ports helps as well. Disembarkation: I notice a lot of people who should not be doing the walk-off doing it, struggling with their luggage and essentially ending up getting assisted walk-off. If you're out of breath just getting your luggage to deck 7, you should let them move it. Just saying. Kudos to the security staff being so polite and keeping their cool during the whole embark/disembark process. Getting there: Easy $25 taxi to/from Cruise Pier, surcharge for extra bags, make sure to ask rate before getting in. Taxi kiosk immediately outside baggage claim. Uber is available. I would be fine with this cabin again were I to book on the Dawn. Read Less

We decided to sail out of San Juan because of the iitenerary. It did not disappoint. Barbados and St. Lucia were great ports. The Virgin Islands were good as well. I like NCLfreestyle ways. Everyone on board was friendly and went out of their way to make your experience a good one. The room stewards are on point Adrian was ours and he was great. Pedro the entertainment director does a good job. The not so newlywed game had me in tears literally. I advise booking some speciality restaurants and booking early. They fill up fast. The complimentary restaurants get old after a while. The Dawn is an older smaller ship. It wears its age well. The ship is well cleaned. The staff is great. The dock party was a blast. NCL entertain better than carnival in my opinion. Moving the white party indoors because of weather was premature. Ended up being beautiful outside. Overall, it was a great trip. There are a lot of free giveaways in port. Check the insert of you daily entertainment publishing. Oh to my surprise, the drinks on NCL were poten. Not cheap, 10-15 each. But strong and tasty. We traveled as a family with two adult children and their spouses. We found the boat in excellent condition, like new almost. The ship is a bit smaller than some of the mega ships we have been on and we found that quite refreshing. The lay out of the boat and signage makes navigating the boat easy. There are a wide range of activities more than you can do. Something for everybody. Good restaurants, be sure to book specialty restaurants early. Many of them sold out on our cruise. We found the sit down restaurants, venition and aqua much better than the buffet. The cruise next program is excellent. You get half of any future cruise deposit as an onboard credit to spend on your current cruise, an incredible value. Our only complaint was the bedding was not comfortable , but our room steward quickly got us some extra padding that fixed this. This ship is an incredible value. Read Less

While I have cruised before, my partner and his daughter were both first timers. I liked the itenarary as it would visit 5 islands which is a bonus in case either party was proned to seasickness. I also liked the size of the ship. Many of the larger ships can be overwhelming to new cruisers and I wanted us all to have a more intimate experience. The cruise was wonderful. Had a mini suite room with a balcony offering lovely views at each port. The ship had a wide range of food and entertainment options, none which were ever over crowded. The Dancing with the Stars was spectacularly entertaining and the professional acts were visually stunning. The people on the ship were friendly and helpful. My only reason was lowering the rating to a 4 is a had some frustration getting bottles of wine from the wine package I ordered. We wanted them for our balcony, but unless the restaurants were open, we struggled to find a place that could give us one. Water fountains would have also help bump this cruise ratings but we hydrated in the main dining area. As for dining, there was enough options that our picky 9 year old had no problem finding delicious things to eat. Hooray! My traveling partners ended the trip committed to becoming cruise people and we will for sure be booking again at some point. Read Less

We booked B2B over Christmas and New Year's on Dawn out of San Juan because of the itinerary and we had never sailed from San Juan. Most things I found in my pre-cruise research indicated that the recent refresh of Dawn made it more modern and user friendly. Let me just say that the public spaces and restaurants are very nice and updated. The rooms on the other hand are still showing their age. There had been some sort of leak above or cabin previously and while I noticed no leaks during our stay the ceiling had never been properly repaired. Since there were public restrooms above our cabin I can only hope it was just water. The boarding process was fast and efficient. Since the ship did not sail until 9pm it seemed that there was not the usual rush for everyone to immediately board. We arrived at the terminal at 1245pm and were onboard in 20 minutes. The staff aboard this ship was absolutely top notch. They went out of their way to learn your name and engage with you to help in anyway they could. Our room steward, Gilbert, made sure we were always taken care of and had everything we needed. The Staff at the Bamini Bar and Gatsby's were the best, especially Nathaniel. I think we have just gotten spoiled by the multitude of entertainment and activities on the big ships. Even with the Holiday activities and the 5 ports on each week we still felt a bit bored at times. There are also some strange quirks about this ship. There are several areas that you can't get to from the deck that they are on. After you figure this out it's not an issue but until you learn it can be difficult. Lack of an adult's only area and limited entertainment options were really the things that brought this review down to 3 stars. Read Less

Friends and family suggested we experience NCL.We chose a cruise out of San Juan to the Southern Caribbean. (Airfare was extremely pricey.) Everything went smoothly both embarking and disembarking. We enjoyed Karaoke each evening and a couple of dance competitions. Elements was a good finish to the week. The Irish bar was a daily stop and we thoroughly enjoyed the bartenders. All other servers and staff were good, too. Aqua was our preferred dining experience over the Venetian. It was more intimate, with less hustle and bustle. We also had the dining package. The French bistro was our favorite. The chef was excellent and entertaining at Tappanyaki. We least preferred Cagney's Steakhouse. Service was good but the food was bland. At each port, we took part in various excursions and enjoyed them all. St. John beach escape was our favorite. St. Lucia catamaran was not as good as our last cruise. The ship is good and easy to navigate around. Smaller than previous cruise ships. Our mini suite was spacious and inviting, along with the balcony. Our one complaint is that our room was on the 11th floor, directly below the Cafe. The constant scraping of chairs across the floor above was annoying. I would recommend you look closely at the ship layout before confirming a room. Your cruise planner can also assist. In summary, it was a great week with family and new friends that we met. We already miss cruising so we've booked again for the summer. This cruise is on the Breakaway, a larger ship with more amenities. We can't wait. Bon voyage! Read Less

We are avid cruisers, this itinerary offered an opportunity to go to many places we have not been able to visit. That being said, the time offered for each destination is not enough. We felt that most of the excursions we booked through the cruise lines were tourist traps; not enough time at the attraction. Pros: Our cabin was amazing, the cabin staff was not. The servers around the ship were incredible.. very happy and eager to please. This was most probably the fastest we have boarded and disembarked. We had a few issues on the boat, the response time was very slow, but all were remedied. At all of the destinations we felt safe and welcome except for one. We booked three resort days, well worth the money, and an exceptional experience. We have some great snorkeling pics throughout the islands, there are so many places to snorkel on this cruise. The boat was in good condition, this is our second time on the Dawn. Now for the Cons; We had a huge issue with our original cabin steward. The linens were torn, the room was mot made up, and my purse dissappeared (it was recovered) It took two hours, standing in line, waiting to get to guest services and security. We made the mistake of going on the Jolly Roger tour.. it is a party boat, overloaded. There were not enough buses to take us back to our boat so we were forced to board another, the bus was full (this is a tour bus with flip down seats in the middle of the isle) when one of the crew members from the Jolly Roger dumped an inebriated (passed out) person in row 4 in the middle seat. A gentleman who needed assistance (he had a walker) was forced to sit in the middle seat in front of her.. enough said. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the port of call. We had never sailed to the southern Caribbean and 6 of the 8 stops were all new islands for us. We were not disappointed with the quality of the beaches, easy aces to them, shopping etc. We are not your typical tourist who book excursions for every stop. We do our own thing as we get off the ship. Getting cabs to and from the beaches are fairly easy and if you feel for a short 2-3 hour tour you can easily get them on and around the ship as you get off and you pay much less. Sometime they need 2-4 pax to complete the cab ride and you can negotiate them, as we did. As an example, St-Lucia, $25/per for a 2.5 hour tour with the caves which we paid $9 at the gate. I believe it was 2x the amount with the ship excursions. The food onboard was very good, for those of you, like us, who had never done "freestyle" dinning before, it is actually quite good. The longuest we ever waited in line at the Venetian dinning room or Aqua was less than 5min. A la carte dining, we only did La Cucina (Italian) was delicious and the extra was approx $30/per. The Asian restaurant (complementary) is a must. Reserve in advance as it does get full every night. We had one deception, that is the choice of more exotic foods such as lobsters, crabs, etc...Probably available in the Specialty restaurant for a fee but not in the main dinning rooms (Venetian/Aqua) and buffet Garden Cafe. We are convinced that it is probably due to the the cruise line trying to maintain pricing. Of the food that was available, it was very tasty but regular diner food. But good. The entertainment was awesome. A few musical, magic, comedian, and the Element finale was truly Vegas like quality. There is typically 2 showing and ample room. The staff is extremely charming, and if you ever sail on this ship and come across "Washy Washy" in the Garden Cafe, you will understand this statement....lollll We had a balcony state room and we were very please, We were on the 10th floor at the aft of the ship and everything was great. A word of caution to those who upgrade to a suit on the 11th floor, we met a couple who were just below the Garden Cafe (buffet) restaurant and the chair sliding noise was constant all day during all meals. Unfortunately, there was no solution from guest services for them other than propose ear plugs!!!!! So please choose your room (if on the 11th) at the front of the ship. In conclusion, we would definitely sail with Norwegian again, Pedro the cruise director was often in and around and very friendly. When speaking with some other guest we realized that we had a better price than some of them, we got ours through Selloff Vacations.com (Canada). For us it was a great value! Thank you Read Less

It was a great way to see a number of islands in the eastern Caribbean. The value seemed like a deal and the 10 day length gave me enough time to see several islands on one trip. I scheduled several shore excursions and purchased a 7-day specialty meal package. I was a little disappointed my travel agent didn't take advantage of the "Free at Sea" promotion Norwegian was running at the time. It offered unlimited bar, free wifi/internet, a few free excursions, and several specialty meals. Now - to the trip. The embarkation process was fairly organized and with a little patience, not too bad of an experience. The cabin was as described - I suppose a little roomier than a standard balcony stateroom, but certainly not large. My biggest problem was - the location ... it was under the deck floor for the dining/pool area. Every morning at 4:30am, I was lucky enough to have a built in wake up call. The crew would BANG, DROP, DRAG and scrape the furniture across the wood deck ( which happened to be my ceiling) without consideration to time or where they were working. I went up the first day to explain to them they were above people's cabins and they looked at me like I was from MARS. Needless to say, it continued for every day of the cruise. If I cruise on Norwegian again, I will NEVER make the mistake of not knowing where my cabin is with regard to floors above and below. It was enough to make my cruise experience not a good one. The food on the cruise was better than average - I found the specialty restaurants were very good and the RSVP process was easy. The shore excursions were fun - not cheap - but easy and very well organized. Overall, it was a good trip ... however, I'm on the fence if I'll use Norwegian for my next cruise. Read Less

I went on the cruise because of the price and itinerary…it didn’t disappoint. I was solo and the solo program is great. Geeofel Villanueva was our coordinator and did a fantastic job! This was my first Norwegian cruise. My biggest complaint was the lack of activities and that the Freestyle Daily and app were incorrect. Activities listed in the Daily weren’t on the app. Activity locations were wrong in the Daily and app. The daily programs on other cruise lines are better. There was normally only two activities to choose from and neither were very exciting. The production shows were subpar. Besides those things, the cruise was very good. The cabin was very nice. The itinerary was excellent. The staff was absolutely fantastic, especially Geeo. All of the staff I interacted with remembered my name. The staff was friendly and helpful. The Cruise Director, Pedro, was too low energy for my taste. Read Less

We took some notes during our most recent cruise on the Norwegian Dawn. I’ve tried to organize them into some kind of order that makes sense. Please keep in mind our personality while reading this review: mid-40’s, husband & wife. Low-Maintenance & not very social by nature. We try to avoid conflict when possible. We’re from the midwest, so give us a chicken breast, steak, and/or potato, and we’re good. No fancy meals really required. My occupation deals a lot with process improvement, so I always see things differently. Keep in mind that everyone has different preferences. For example, I’ve read reviews where people complained that they didn’t make enough announcements over the PA system. I personally LIKE cruise directors who are constantly in my ear! So, here it goes... DAWN, IN GENERAL The Dawn seems like an average NCL ship. This is our fourth NCL cruise, and for the most part, the Dawn is true to NCL. We like this size of ship. It (usually) makes things go fairly smoothly compared to some of the bigger ships. We were disappointed that the Dawn came out of dry-dock in 2016 missing some major improvements. No interactive touch screens near the elevators like on the Epic. No USB ports for charging in the rooms, and NO power near the bed at all. Attention USA Travelers: At least in our room, there was only one semi-usable 110 volt outlet in the whole place. (Outlet #2 is in the bathroom and really only usable for razors.) The Dawn’s sister-ship, Jade, was recently outfitted with plugs and USB ports, but the Dawn has yet to be modernized like that. The Dawn had some weird layouts, but overall, it is a solid ship. For example, there are two (uneven) sides to the Garden Cafe, but only one Ice Cream machine — and it was way in the back on the side they usually closed after the dinner rush. So when you wanted cookies, snacks, and ice cream in the evenings, you had to get the cookies on one side, and then walk all the way around to the other side to get your ice cream. Not terrible, but just a nuisance. The stair towers are clearly marked as to what floor you are on, but this ship does not clearly identify which stair tower you are in. Can be confusing at times. We did figure it out after 4-5 days. The theater seems appropriately sized for this size of ship. Plenty of seating, especially when there are two shows in a night. I’ve read reviews to the contrary, but there was always room at our showtimes. We didn’t use it, but the kids area seemed very nice. Their own pool, some small slides, etc. On a 10-day cruise like this one, there aren’t a lot of kids anyway, but the ones that were there were well-entertained. We didn’t like the fact that they played quite a few games & trivia at the Gatsby’s bar area. This area is adjacent to a cigar bar, smoking area, and the casino isn’t far either. You couldn’t even walk above it on Deck 7 without smelling smoke. We are sensitive to smoke smell, so we avoided that whole area for the entire cruise. This meant missing out on some activities, but I was able to spend more time getting some sun instead! DINING The food was good, as expected. The Aqua dining room was good, but nothing wowed us. The buffet seemed repetitive. I get the repetition at breakfast, but not the other meals. They didn’t seem to have a lot of “theme nights” at the buffet, though. On past NCL cruises, there was always signage at lunch indicating what the theme of the night would be. Sometimes it’s nice to not do the dining rooms and just hit a buffet when you know it’s “Mexican Night” for example. Just an observation. And why can’t cruise lines figure out how to make a good pastry? ENTERTAINMENT We went to most of the shows in the Stardust while onboard. We typically went to the early show, but the 7:00 and 9:00 are supposed to be the same. We believe the entertainment in the theater was the best we’ve had on any of our cruises. Comedian/Juggler Dan Bennett is awesome (we’ve seen him before), the Newlywed/Not-So-Newlywed game didn’t disappoint, Michael Somerville had a very good show, the aerialists were impressive, magician PJ Wen was amazing (I was sitting there shaking my head multiple times), and the Elements show was very entertaining as well. Solid lineup, in our opinion. CRUISE-SPECIFIC ITEMS We believe the following items were specific to our itinerary, or port, so they are grouped here: On this cruise, there were PLENTY of deck chairs on the pool and sun decks, even on a sea day. First time we’ve ever experienced this. We’re theorizing that since we embarked in San Juan (and we know there were quite a few Puerto Ricans on this cruise), that Puerto Ricans don’t cruise to lay by the pool and catch rays. They can do that at home! 1:00 arrival in St Lucia. CRAZY trying to get off the ship. Everyone trying to leave at the same time. It took us over 30 minutes to get off the ship. Luckily, we still made our excursion meeting time. Barely! TIP FOR NCL: When you arrive mid-day, get the people with excursions off the ship first. Then let the others go. Note: we heard that the forward gangway was a lot better, but can’t verify that. If that WAS the case, it would have been nice to announce that fact over the PA system. We were disappointed that they waited until the last night to break out the chocolate chip cookies. Plenty of oatmeal raisin, but my wife was really holding out for the CC! I won’t go into port-specific items here. Our itinerary was awesome. Lots of stops and only one sea day. We love waking up in a different country every morning!! NCL TRAVEL AND TRANSFERS Due to promotions and incentives, this is the first time we allowed NCL to book our travel. The hotel was very nice and it was nice to have to have NCL worry about finding a suitable hotel, given that our original hotel (and even the 2nd choice) seems to be behind on hurricane recovery efforts. We had a room, and didn’t have to worry about anything. Flights are another story… We were in the very back of the plane each time. I’m sure NCL chose the cheapest seats they could. I’m inclined to never allow them to schedule airfare for me again. And as indicated before, the debarkation was WAY to early for the return flight. The transfers themselves went well. On the way in, we were met at the airport and taken directly to the hotel with no issues or delay. Same from hotel to port. The story of the transfer from port to airport has more to tell, though. As far as the Port of San Juan, the NCL transfers we had seemed to be the way to go. There seemed to be quite a bit of chaos in the port, with a HUGE backup of traffic coming into port. Our NCL transfer was easy to get to and we were out of there… However, the 8:45 debarkation time for the transfer was WAY too early for our 3:30 flight. We had to wait around for over an hour before we were even allowed to check our bags. And there are no seats other than the hard floor! Then we sat for five hours, before our four hour flight. And after a brief layover, it was another two hours before getting home. It was a long day that really didn’t leave us with a “WOW” feeling about our vacation. One thing we might look into next time in a similar situation is to book an excursion with airport transfer included. NCL considers San Juan a “port” so if you’re getting a credit per port, that should apply there as well. Something to look into... Will we go on NCL again? Absolutely! Was this the best NCL cruise we've been on? I think it COULD have been, but the room location just took too much away from the experience. Read Less

Embarkation was very good. We did arrive around 2, not crowded therefore it was fast. The cabin was good. My disappointment happened whe the bathroom got clogged. Did call and was told they were taking care of the problem due to a fire. After half hour I went down to customer service and they told me the problem was with the line and to used the public bathrooms. I was very upset when more than 2 hours past and nothing was done. Close to 3 hours my went down and ask what was going on and if they can not fix the problem to change us to another cabin. The front desk said no. They we ask to speak to the manager and told him it was not right for us to be sent to use the public bathrooms and that nothing was done in close to 3 hours. When the manager call to have the cabin service it was done in five minutes. At that time the smell in the cabin was horrible. The whole situation was handled in a very unprofessional way. Like that is not enough we go to the Bamboo Restaurant and the Maitre D give us a lecture as to why we need to make reservations to eat there ( I did not see that requirement written anywhere) Two days later we go to Venetian for breakfast and they told us it was closed, when we asked why (the conversation is in English), the lady gave us an answer in English and then slowly in Spanish. Please don’t patronize people. That is disrespectful. In this cruise I noticed staff with a long face and not helpful. They looked tired The food was not as tasty as in previous cruises. We have to wait 25 minutes for the waiter to come and finally ate after an hour in the restaurant. It happened twice. At this point we are Gold members and had been either very satisfied or happy with my cruise experience. Not this time. Definitely after all of the above I can say it was not a pleasant vacation I have to say, two people in the staff were extremely pleasant. A waitress, Mylene in the Aqua restaurant and the Maitre D in the same restaurant Imelda Salazar. I wish you will have more people like them. Pedro Serra, always nice a pleasant. We have been in 3 cruises with him in charge of entertainment. I would love to be more positive about my review but, I ca only write what I experienced. Read Less

Southern Caribbean was on our list of cruises we had been looking forward to. This cruise with NCL hit every Island we wanted to visit. The ship is a smaller and older ship but, with the upgrades they have made to the Dawn, we thought were really well thought out. The pool is small so if you are looking to go for a swim it would be hard to do. They do have plenty of spots you can lay out for sun bathing. They have walking track, golf net, ping pong, basketball, soccer and even an outside pool and play area for kids. I highly suggest everyone when they can take the ship tour. They have a few shops on the ship to shop at but we really don't do any shopping on ships. The photo lab, computer lab are in the same area. Shore excursion, Cruise next and Customer service are easy to access. The atrium area is not that big but, they have tried to put seating areas around the cafe and up above on the next floor. We were upgraded from a balcony to a family suite that we put a bid on. We really liked all the space in our cabin. The decor was nice. We had a couch two chairs and a separate table with four chairs. The bathroom had a tub and a separate shower area that we really liked along with two sinks. We would diffidently recommend this cabin. We had the dinning package plus we are Platinum so we also had two other diners we could eat at. We liked every restaurant we were in and thought there were many menu items to choose from. The entertainment was really good every night we went. We also listened to the music at one of the bars that changed from night to night. Since we were at a port every day, we had a tour every day and did not take advantage of the day to day activities. We also did not go to any of the pool parties, or ship parties they had. Our service was really good. Our room steward was on top of everything we asked for. The butler had snacks in our room every day and was always asking if we needed anything. We picked excursions that explored the islands that we went to. There was only one tour that we did not like and that was the Historical Island Tour on St Lucia. This was one of the Islands we thought we really wanted to explore. The tour stopped at three stops which was a historic house, a Fort and a fishing village. The area's that we drove through were shacks. The fishing village had many stands to buy souvenirs but, they actually hide the fishing village and we only had 20 minutes to look around the area. All the tours that we went on the other islands were ones that showed off the area's. All the ports you could either walk off and explore or take a taxi to the downtown area's. We would diffidently go back to all the islands we went to and try doing other tours. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the number of islands in the Itinerary and the fact that it leaves out of a port that is basically already there (less sail days). We also wanted to experience an NCL cruise on a smaller ship with less people, we were not disappointed. We realized that there would not be the amenities that the larger ships have like a Margarita Ville and the outside bars and restaurants - we missed this on the Dawn. There are very few outside bars and restaurants have no outside seating. On our previous cruises (Getaway and Breakaway) they played fun music across the ship. I did not realize what a difference that made. The Dawn plays much older fashioned music and the entertainment was really geared to an older (70+) crowd. We also found that the specialty dining is different. The restaurants are very small and they ran out of food types (we were restricted to 6oz filet minion at the steakhouse restaurant. Cabins - you get what you pay for. We splurged for our wedding anniversary and had an owners suite (Park Avenue Suite 10506). This cabin is fantastic! There are two decks, one of the front of the ship and one on the side. There is butler service and all the perks that come along like priority boarding and disembarkation (no lines) and many other great things. This ship does not have a Haven but the service and extra perks are really worth it. We booked excursions almost every day at each port. I recommend doing this so you can get a feel for the island to see if you might want to return. Read Less

We are seasoned cruisers but first time on Norwegian. No problem with embarking or disembarking ship, very smooth. Smallest balcony cabin we ever had. We didn't care for layout, felt like we were in each others way all the time. Bathroom very small but decent shower. Sore back everyday from the mattress, it had to be mattress, because I was fine when I got home. Entertainers and shows were great, better than some other cruise lines. Did not like that NCL is always trying to nickel and dime you, especially trying to get you to buy lottery tickets before shows. Very tacky! The service was excellent. The food in Buffet was horrible, like a hospital cafeteria and the layout was very congested. The food was ok in the dining rooms but nothing special. The specialty restaurants were excellent. It was as if they are steering you to the specialty restaurants. No lobster night, what a disappointment! No lobster in specialty restaurants either. NCL really catered to smokers with the whole one side of pool deck for smokers, a smoking lounge off the regular lounge which came right out into the public areas and while you were sitting in the regular lounge you would get blasted when the door opened. The same in the casino. It was a great itinerary with 9 islands in 11 days. My husband and I like sharing tables for breakfast and dinner on cruises as we like to meet new people but it was discouraged on NCL, when we asked they said they would see what they could do but never did. The ship was nicely appointed but public areas were very crowded. We don't know if we will use NCL again unless it is for the itinerary. Read Less

The cruise destinations were fabulous. The food, was not. Worst cruise food ever. I've had better at cheap buffets. Even the food in the restaurants was flavorless and options lacking. Same menu for lunch in the Venetian every single day for lunch, and if you're vegetarian, forget it, one option, a horrible, flavorless Spanish frittata every day your only option. Buffett foods equally as bad. Flavorless and no taste. Choices the same every day. Even the appearance was not appealing. Very limited choices for even a salad. Fruit was under ripe. Even the food in the specialty restaurants was lacking and flavorless. Salt and spice is something never heard of on this ship. In addition we were double charged for our water package. Even after having to spend money for internet minutes to prove our card had been charged for water months ago, they still claimed we hadn't paid and charged us almost $60 again for our bottled water. Service was poor. Servers arguing with each other in front of passengers, repeatedly. Meals in main dining rooms taking 1 and half plus hours because servers disappeared and wouldn't take orders for long time after sitting or meals took forever to come after ordering. This was our 4th Norwegian cruise. Had this been our first, it would have been our last. Get with it Norwegian. Read Less

We booked an 11 night Southern Carrib on the Dawn a year in advance. Price could not be beat and we had the Drinks package, Dining package, $100 per port shore credits and internet and calling home from out room. Internet worked ok after hearing horror stories. We just knew not to do more than basic stuff. The specialty dining was a godsend because we have noticed h big drop in quality in the main dining room. There were three of us and every night one of us was dissappointed. We did Cagneys, Le Bistro and the Italian rest and Bamboo one night. Food was terrific but no more choices in Cagneys except Filet Mignon and Tbone. Nothing else available the whole cruise. We had a handicapped balcony cabin on deck 9 aft. 9708 and everything was fine. Good cabin steward and room and balcony were fine. Beds seemed better than our last three times on the Dawn. Last two rooms we had were uncomfortable at best. Be carefull with the shore excursion staff. I am Gold and should get 10 percent discount. Had to go stand in line there to have my discounts applied and the way the billed out the shore excursions and credits was very poor. It seemed we got away with a few free excursions so I did not say a word. Most of us saw the nightly shows and as usual they were all good. Can still get drinks there if you get there early enough. And the Drinks package works very well now all over the ship except if you are in the hot tubs and want something. You can get two drinks each or a double, even double servings of wine at dinner. We visited 9 islands in 11 days and the only place we did not like at all was Grenada. They took us to three places and on a four hour trip we just rode around in a poorly built bus for all but maybe 30 minutes. All other ship shore excursions were ok. We only used NCL excursions because of the $100.00 per port credit. All in all it was fine. Read Less
