Nothing but bad experiences. Ship was late coming in meaning we waited over 3 hours in line just to board the ship. Toilet wouldn't flush, shower overflowed, one closet door kept coming off the track and falling off, other closet door wouldn't stay shut opening and closing all night as the ship rocked, had to put a pillow to stop the banging, missing towels and ice every day, was looking forward to the towel animals everyone told me about, but only got one after I asked about it. Three in total on a 7 day cruise. Very disappointing. Had problems with one of the games in the bar working. Waited for the green light to come on like it said and it never did. Got back to my room and checked the on board account and I was charged each time I swipped my card even though it appeared as if it didn't work. Complained and still didn't get a refund for the $15. Food was cold at the jungle fantasy show and the jugglers kept dropping things and the acrobats kept falling. All in all, the trip sucked! Never again! Read Less

This cruise rocks, gonna miss Breakaway when it moves overseas Looking forward to Escape being my to go to Bermuda ship. make sure you rent the mopeds when you get there makes the whole trip better. Food off the hook. Service was fantastic, Make sure you talk to the crew they are real people and go beyond if you let them. Getting on was a little slow but we got off at 0800 and was on the street by 0820. Parked at the pier for $280.00 (crazy) but when in Rome. Do this cruise and NCL's Freestyle is the way to go, don't forget the water slide and rope course they make you feel 20 again. Enjoy and cruise often..... Read Less

I love cruising. I live in Austin, TX and wanted to visit NYC. Friends recommended Bermuda so i thought that I would cruise from NYC to Bermuda. Bermuda is beautiful. it is clean, friendly, and interesting. There is a lot to see and do but it is expensive. I chose to do it on my own buying the transportation pass. Everyone I spoke to who went on a shore excursion loved their excursion. Ship is very huge and you will do a lot of walking, sometimes, too much walking. I have problems with my back, legs and feet. I was often experiencing pain and walking was very often very difficult. Complimentary food was good. Entertainment was ok. Burn The Floor good but Rock of Ages was too raunchy for me. I had the Thermal Pass but the hot tub was lukewarm throughout the voyage. Most of the rooms were also not warm or hot enough. I did not know if some of them were even operating. Interesting that hundreds of passengers were from Mainland China as well as staff. Glad to see it. Major problem at the New York Port. Computers went down due to hurricanes and we had to stand on our feet for about two full hours waiting to be able to check in. Read Less

Breakaway Bermuda cruise Haven September 10-17 I came home today and wanted to jump on this review right away. When I originally booked this cruise I booked a mid ship balcony but then I started reading about the Haven which was a lot more money than we usually would spend. After tons of research, questions on Cruise Critic and discussions with my husband, we decided that since we weren't flying to the port or have to spend money on a pre cruise hotel we would go for it. I fell in love with the H6 aft balcony and booked it. We weren't sure if Irma or Jose would affect our cruise but we were so very lucky, Bermuda it was!! I'm going to review each aspect of the ship that we used/visited. Also the private tour we took and what we did on our own in Bermuda. First the ship. Haven...oh my goodness! They treated you like royalty as soon as you walked into the terminal. All I had to say is Haven and it brought me to a special security line. Said that word again, it brought us to a special room off the side with a special check in. We got there at 9:45, security opened at 10 and we were checked in by 10:10 having coffee and snacks. The ship came in late so we didn't get onboard until almost noon since we were still waiting for the others to leave the ship. We were escorted onboard directly to the Haven where we were treated to sliders and fries and introduced to Patrick our concierge for the week. We then went to check out if our cabin was ready and it was. We met Carlos, our room Stewart and then went to explore the ship. We didn't meet our butler Willie until the next day. Holy cow was this ship big! We started on deck 16 and worked our way down. Along the way we found a hot dog vendor, grabbed one and kept exploring. I will first start with food. We ate breakfast in the Haven( I had seafood eggs benedict which I have found out I don't like seafood for breakfast and my husband his old standby 2 fried eggs bacon, sausage and toast), buffet and room service throughout the week. All was very good. Love the little hash browns! We didn't alway eat lunch but we did eat in the Haven once ( I had Cobb salad, yum and hubby had the French dip sandwich which he loved), buffet and once at O'Sheehans which we were disappointed in. Husband had the open face turkey which he didn't like at all and the wings that I heard was great were nothing more than frozen wings fried. Dinner we at at Moderno which was excellent, room service Cagneys also excellent, Margaritaville which we loved and buffet which was hit or miss. Shows- we only got to see Second City one night and loved it. We played a Deal or no Deal which was fun. Casino- we spent a lot of time in the casino, we lost. No winners this cruise. Thermal spa- OMG! The best spent money ever. We used it a lot. Salt room, Thermal pool....Heaven. I need that in my house. Read Less

We went on a 7 day cruise to Bermuda from New York, We spent a couple days in New York before. I would recommend this so you can avoid any delays that might effect the cruise embarkation. This was our 3rd time cruising with Norwegian first on Epic then Getaway, now Breakaway. We were travelling as a family of 5 (two teenagers) so we got two balcony rooms, the rooms had plenty of space and was very comfortable for sleeping even with three people in one room. The ship had many great amenities like the mini golf, sports complex and ropes course are great for all ages. We were able to always fine seats but tried to stay away from the pools because of how busy they were. My daughter had two allergies so we went to guest services and we talk to one lady who helped us with all our meals for the entire trip and made sure she could eat what she wanted. They also would make her a separate dessert to avoid any cross contamination. The food was fantastic, the dinning and shows at the manhattan room were amazing as well. We saw the cirque du soleil show and it was amazing we left wanted to see it again! Everyone on board was so friendly and would help you whenever you needed it! We really enjoyed that this cruise only went to one port because we stayed in Bermuda for 3 days so it allowed us to see more of the port. We had enough time that we could do an excursion and come back to the ship for lunch and go back out and walk around. We will always choose Norwegian to cruise with and will definitely to the same Bermuda one again. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we couldn't have been happier. It was so wonderful to be able to spend time as a family. We had no idea how spoiled we would be. The crew treated us like royalty. Our son has celiac disease and he met with the maitre d personally the night before to go over the menu and place special orders. When we would arrive for our meal the next day we just told our server he had a special order and his food was prepared in a separate kitchen. They knew him by name and would come ask him if he was happy. The service was exceptional. Our housekeeper (?) Sandros was the best. He was like an energizer bunny. He kept the room in immaculate condition. The ropes course was a huge huge hit with the kids. They both went on it several times. Bermuda was amazing but being on a cruise ship was more fun than we ever imagined. I hope we can cruise again one day!! Read Less

As a first time cruiser, all I could say is Never again. I will start with the cabin, I heard they were small, but no one said they were that tiny, dark, and dingy. Lights didn't work properly. The sheets had no cotton remaining on them, seriously grey in color. Dirty Carpet! The first steward to address us in our cabin was overly rude. He mentioned to keep the balcony door shut at all times OR the air conditioner would not work properly! I thought that was a little strange, wound up, doing just that, and opened the door, and there was no problem with the air conditioner.. (First red flag)! He complained every time I opened the entry door, that He would get sick from the draft it created! Yelled directly at me and slammed his bunch of cleaning products down. I got to a point I didn't let him in the room the rest of the trip. Second issue... Toilets Never flushed! A good 60 percent of the day, no flushing toilets! Not just in the room, but every toilet took turns.hours at a time. This IS unacceptable! Every time we needed towels we had to beg for them, and bathroom tissue paper! That steward was as rude as they come. To complain about the toilets not flushing, was the same excuse daily! Room service brought in a breakfast tray, and the steward would not remove it when we put it outside the door. #3... Smoking everywhere! That was pretty disgusting, especially people sneaking smoking on the balcony... #4 I never knew how many people were on this ship.. to my understanding including staff it was 5000! Seriously, the ship cannot handle all the needs of paying guests! The pools were not equipped with proper entry, only a steep ladder scaling the wall of the small overcrowded pool! It was a horrible experience, with people holding lounge chairs and no one was in them. The pool area was like sardines in a can! The docking day was a frenzy at the beach, so I skipped that too. Tried the beach the next day, hurricane Harvey put a damper on that too. By then, I was pretty much hot exhausted, from sleepless nights, with loud banging music playing in the distance every night till the wee hours... shoulder was hurting from pressing the button to flush the toilette. I just wanted to go home to the peace. The food was the only part of the trip I enjoyed. Leaving the ship was a total disaster, of three hours packed in a waiting room, with screaming children, and noise! To sum it up, Cruising is for 16 year olds who want to be 20, and 40 year olds that think they are 20, gamblers, and alcoholic's make up the other percent. . The rest of the people are just lost in the crowd. Like I said before. Never again! A pretty bad costly experience. Read Less

This was my 2nd time to Bermuda, its one of my favorite places in the world. This was my 3rd NCL cruise and my 1st mega ship. The Breakaway is big, but that's what I loved about it. So much to do. The shows were good, Second City (adult show) was great...not appropriate for a younger audience. We did not have a dining package so we just used the complimentary options. They had lots of selections and it was always good. Our room was great, however I have a bad knee so I wish I would have checked out the location to the closet elevator before I agreed to the room. We went with another couple so we decided to purchase the iConcierge service. Unless they make some improvements I will not purchase the service again. It only worked at certain places, I would definitely go on the Breakaway again, and I plan on going back to Bermuda in 2 years. Read Less

Once again my family and I had a fabulous time on the Norwegian Breakaway. This was my third cruise to Bermuda on the Breakaway, it is a beautiful ship and the itinerary of 3 days in Bermuda is perfect. The boarding process was a breeze, Norwegian has you pick a time you would like to arrive. We chose to arrive between 1:00-1:30pm and within 20 minutes of arrival we were checked in, our photo ID and “welcome aboard” pictures were taken and we were on the pool deck enjoying cocktails and lunch. The next seven days were just as perfect. The food, entertainment and the actives all top notch. We especially enjoyed the specialty restaurants on this cruise; we went to Moderno, an authentic Brazilian steakhouse, Le Bistro, a marvelous French restaurant and Cagney’s, a topnotch steakhouse. The shows were fantastic, I recommend seeing the Broadway Play “Rock of Ages” and the dance show “Burn the Floor”. The comedy club was also very entertaining. Once arriving in Bermuda there is so much to do. I recommend any of the fabulous beaches and also taking the ferry over to Hamilton and going to the Bermuda Zoo and Aquarium. We also did a shore excursion we booked on the ship. It was a glass bottom boat trip at night (10pm) going into the Bermuda Triangle area, very exciting and informative. If you’re looking for a fabulous cruise, the Norwegian Breakaway is the place to be! Read Less

Chose this cruise because it left and returned to NY. Had sailed on Breakaway before, and enjoyed the experience.Things that disappointed this time were: Cagney's porterhouse not as good or tender as it should have been. Cagneys lobster bisque very strange, didn't eat it. Steak knife not sharp and was huge and hard to cut with. Manhattan room NY strip steak also not tender, sent it back. I agree that the food tends to be too salty in the complimentary dinning rooms. Enjoyed the Garden Buffet and Le Bistro. Enjoyed the Cirque show, if not the provided entree. Ship pools too small, hot tubs filled with kids. Atrium crowded with people saving seats for friends for long periods of time. Internet area not properly staffed, unhappy people. On the positive side, all personnel except for guest services were wonderful and always greeted us with a smile. Cabin well kept. Bartenders in atrium and Cagneys were attentive and efficient, good drinks! Martinis in Shakers, were delicious. Rock of Ages was lewd loud and inappropriate for children, yet they allowed it. Saw parents taking children out, thank you. The casino area was way too smokey and smoke seeped throughout other areas. Embarking was late and confusing. Needed more policing. Trivia in teams was confusing as was the scoring. I am sailing on the Escape in April and I hope things will be better. In closing I must say that the ship was very clean and sanitary, personnel polite and for the most part the food was very good. Read Less

Sailed same ship in 2013 I see a better improvement in attitude from the staff. Open areas but ventilation could be better by the cigar room and casino. Pretty good ship and never feels to crowded until last day. Many dining options one thing that kinda got me was the service charge for my 3 yr he eats off my plate and sleep in same bed 14 dollars extra a day seems little high. Guest services, stewards, and front house staff seem much nicer then last trip on same boat not sure if many people bought up same issue but is different for the better. Booked a mini suite not much difference from regular balcony bathroom was the real upgrade had Swedish shower and rainfall showerhead along with the double sink, save money do a balcony or jump to full suite in my opinion. On board entertainment was great from the shows to the live music playing on pool deck or dining room. Will do again Read Less

As a frequent (7x) NCL cruiser, I have always enjoyed freestyle cruising and the entertainment on NCL ships. You get none of this on the Breakaway. On all other ships when there were minor issues, staff was responsive - this was not my experience on the Breakaway. Lineups, overcrowding, misinformation, dirty, broken etc. I will not likely go on NCL again and would not recommend it based on this experience. Embarkation was 2.5 hours, cabin not clean/ready with a broken cupboard door at 2pm. Nothing gets fixed even with repeated attempts to the maintenance, front desk and 2x to the hotel director Vuk. Entertainment was the worst ever, with the same really bad comedian on 4 nights. The only highlight was Second City but if you don't book the first day you have to wait in line for cancellations. The one adult pool, no quiet spots is just beyond horrible. The food in buffet was repetitive and cool. They refused to open up more seating even when it was overcrowded (they are on there own schedule). Do not book a studio cabin as the entire area really smells, gets poor stewards and the host never shows up (NCL does not live up to the promise). Noodle bar was excellent food and service but if you don't get their right at 5pm you won't get in. Breakaway disembarkation was a nightmare. I lined up at 6:45 am and was 10th in line and the doors were not opened until 9am. No announcements as to delays etc. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. If you like cruising, don't take the Breakaway. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because we wanted to spend some time in Bermuda. We went there on our honeymoon and this cruise was to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We have sailed on Royal Caribbean and Carnival. We have sailed on more than a dozen different trips. We chose NCL because it was a new cruise line for us and we were disappointed with Carnival on the last couple trips. Obviously we like cruising and even a bad cruise is still pretty good in my opinion. I liked the free style dining option on NCL. No rush to get back from excursions and run to the dining room. The downside to free style dining is the wait staff does not get to know you personally and therefore you have to tell them to do things like refill water glass or get another glass of tea, etc. The staff didn't seem to be trained well enough on how the dining experience should flow. For example, I received a steak knife after the dinner was complete and we were waiting for dessert. The rooms were typical and the balcony extremely small. Imagine sitting in coach on an aircraft and that is how the balcony felt. The room attendant didnt seem to get the idea that we wanted fresh beach towels in the room everyday. Also, we had room 8752 which happened to be directly above the main theater. When the shows or practice was taking place the room was like being next to a car on the road with a loud bass, thump, thump, thump. The sounds goes on like this until past 1am. Needless to say, very difficult to get sleep in this room. We ended up moving to another room. The ship in general was very clean and nice, not extremely fancy, but nice. the biggest issue with this ship is that the casino is on the middle floor surrounding the atrium and the smoke from the casino permeated the entire center of the ship. In addition, the smokers area is located mid ship and everytime the exterior door opens the smoke comes flying into the main hallway. The improvement would be to install some system to keep the smoke outdoors. Of course, since the smokers area is midship, all balconies aft get to smell the smoke. One last thing that I found different was that you have to make a reservation for every show. Some shows were booked solid after just a couple hours after boarding started. Both the embarkation and disembarkation process did not work very well at all. On the positive side, the food was very good and overall the desserts were far superior to other cruise lines. I had a nice time on this cruise, but I will try another cruise line for my next trip. Read Less

Last minute good deal. We purposely choose after Labour Day believing that children would be in school. Apparently not the case. And also, parents seem to travel with the young ones. There were hundreds of children on this cruise. We had chosen a mini-suite, wrong choice. All around us were families jammed into the rooms with cots and cribs, little ones out on the balconies at 6:30am banking on the tables and chairs like they were drums. Children above us running through the hallways, others repeated plushing the toilets. They were also brought to all of the dining room, including the specialty pay extra Cagney's steak house. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine to have dinner at 8pm with under 5 year olds everywhere. Not sure if this is indicative of the ship, as there is a huge amount for children to do, beware if you don't want children on the same ship. Celebrity was in port the same time as us, they thought less than a dozen children on board. The staff were wonderful. They quickly leaned what we liked and always remembered. The food covered the like of all four of us. Lots of beef would have been nice for more of a fish selection. We didn't like the band in the large dining room, so we always went to the smaller ones. We didn't do any entertainment, but there sure was a wide variety. We loved the adult only sunning area aft. Loved the fountains to sit and soak and cool down. Read Less

Convenient time and location. Customer service seems to suffer in the larger ships. Public space is smaller than on the smaller ships. The wait staff is so busy they do not have enough time to be more than just pleasant. At times they were so busy they were just plain rude. The entertainment is very limited and I cannot believe how small the theater is. It is half the size of those on the smaller ships. Getting reservations was a chore due to the number of passengers and the limited space in the theater. The pool was smaller that I would expect it to be -- most likely due to the size of the water slides which were hardly used. I will be sticking to cruises on the smaller ships and hope they don't just stop building and using the ~2000 passenger size ships. They always have been more personal. Read Less

This is our third Norwegian cruise. We love the freestyle idea, but have never sailed on any other cruise line. This was our second trip to Bermuda on the Breakaway. The cruising experience is wonderful with Norwegian. Since this was our second on the Breakaway, we knew the ropes, what was where and what to expect. While I don't want this to sound negative, I want to be honest on what you may expect. The Breakaway is starting to show some wear since our 2014 experience when it was practically brand new. I guess this is to be expected, but it was disappointing to see rugs that needed some cleaning, chairs that could use some additional care, etc. However, we still enjoy the glamor/glitz of the ship. The food is wonderful in all restaurants with the exception of the buffet. I booked the complimentary restaurants and the specialty restaurants well in advance. I think the Manhattan Room is a much better dining experience than Savor or Taste. We found Tempanaki and La Cucina to be wonderful experiences as well. LeBistro was nice but I expected more of it. Although this is not politically acceptable in today's world, I think at least one restaurant should be dedicated to adults only. I'm past the age of raising my children and prefer not to crawl around strollers and listening to screaming children who are completely ignored by their parents. The buffet had a variety of items, but I thought most of the food was not hot enough (temperature wise). Here, children run amok, cut inline, and dance around while their parents are elsewhere or ignoring them. I understand parents want a vacation too, but it should not be at the expense of other adults. The entertainment was very good and we enjoyed Rock of Ages and Burn the Floor yet again. For repeat cruisers, Norwegian should think about changing it up at this point. We enjoyed the art auction; however, much of the same "comments", "jokes", etc. were the same at each auction. This needs to be changed up if you want people to return to the next auction. By the end of the cruise, I could have delivered the presentation since it was pretty much the same. I am waiting to see if the art works I purchased on board were good financial decisions or if it was all a scam (as I've read online after I returned!). Forget about purchasing the messaging/texting package for $9.95. It's a waste of money and I was pretty much unable to send or receive messages in a timely manner. It seems both the sender and receiver have to be in the application to get the message. We had the worst disembarkation experience ever! There was very little communication regarding what was happening, what color was being called, everyone being jammed into the common spaces, and just about total chaos. I understand Customs or the Port were having issues and delayed us, still there is no reason for treating us as we were. Most could not hear which "color" was being called and it took us three hours of standing on line while the ship to get off. There was no coffee, water, or other provisions for anyone who was having an issue dragging their luggage around during the wait. We got up at 6:00 a.m. in order to be able to disembark at 8:30...they didn't stick to the "color" logic and it was like a bunch of cattle being herded out. It took over 3 hours to disembark. I still love Norwegian and am hoping they can iron out some of the snags. I understand there is at least one new ship scheduled to be commissioned next year. As an aside, going through the NYC port to disembark was disappointing and dangerous. We were directed to use the escalators while carrying two large suitcases and several small packages. One could not hope to hold on to a railing. This is both dangerous and unacceptable. People's safety should not be put at risk at any time for the Port's convenience. One person lost control of their suitcase and it went flying down the escalator and hit another passenger. Fortunately, the passenger took it in stride but this could have resulted in multiple injuries with a huge pile up of people going down with suitcases in hand. Read Less

We chose Breakaway because the amenities being offered by the line plus those offered by our travel agent made it a great fit since we have been targeting Bermuda for a while. The ship itself is not laid out very well, but we knew this ahead of time having sailed on Getaway. Service, food, drinks and weather all met or exceeded expectations. Entertainment was definitely geared toward a different type. We have never felt that excessive swearing and raunchiness were really "entertainment". TV in the cabin would continuously lose service but didn't really matter. 8 channels of shipboard activities, 5 channels devoted to news (all of it on hurricane Harvey) 1 channel of TV shows, 1 for movies and 1 for sports (tennis or soccer). We enjoyed all of our excursions which we booked through NCL. Day 1 was a tour of Bermuda which gave us a great background of The island. Day 2 was an evening cruise into the Triangle, and Day 3 was a relaxing morning at the beach before leaving. There were three areas of the trip we were disappointed with. Embarkation - the first passengers boarded after 12 noon. Enough said. Smoking - it really seemed NCL bent over backwards for the smokers. They had many more slot machines which were a much better variety than being offered on the "non smoker " side. This is really mis-named because the odor of smoke was prevelent throughout the casino. The staff was prompt, however, to notify the people in the balcony adjacent to ours to not smoke. Debarkation - was the worst I have ever experienced. They let you choose your own time with a limited number available for each slot. There were so many people for the earliest time slot that they shut down the elevators to that deck (7) we were down early enough to be toward the front of the 8-8:30 line. When they finally released us at 10:00 they allowed the people at the back of the line to exit with us because the line was so long they ran out of room. So after waiting 2 hours, we exited after some of the passengers who had just gotten in line. One last issue has to do with NCL not honoring one of their promised amenities. At the time we booked, sailings out of New York on Breakaway were to receive 250 internet minutes. We were given 100 minutes, though we had printed out the offer. We will stick to cruising, but doubt if NCL will be an option. Read Less

We had the ultimate beverage package promotion and 4 specialty dining experiences as well. Cagney's and Teppanyaki were our two favorites. Mario was very entertaining at Teppanyaki and our service at Cagney's was great as well. We also dined at La Cucina and Ocean Blue - cruise line should be more transparent with the additional upcharge for Ocean Blue but the food and service was excellent at Ocean Blue. There were also some unexpected limitations on liquor in our beverage package. Rock of Ages show was great as well. Service at O'Sheehan's was not not as good as our prior experience on the Escape and the Garden Cafe service and food was average. Staff was much more attentive in the Garden Cafe on the Escape. We chose this cruise because we love Bermuda and I don't like to fly. This was our 4th time on the Breakaway and the 3rd time in the Haven. Once you stay in the Haven it is hard to go back to a regular cabin. The Haven is a ship within a ship...You have your own Pool, Hot Tubs, Sundeck, Bar and Restaurant. Each time we ventured out to the Main Pool area we couldn't wait to get back to our Sanctuary in the Haven. Embarkation was smooth we were escorted to the Haven check-in and shortly later escorted into the Haven. Disembarkation we were escorted from the Haven directly off the ship and straight to the front of the customs line. The amenities in The Haven include a wonderful restaurant with Top Notch service and great food, we were always greeted by name by the friendly hostess (I forget her name...OOPS) We loved the Haven Lounge too!! Lester and Ivana were the bartenders and they were THE BEST!! Ivana is like a chemist with her drinks, always letting us try her latest invention and they were always delicious!! My husband liked her Bloody Mary with the Cayenne Pepper infusion. I liked her Spicy Chocolate Martini. The Concierge, Anoop, always seemed to check up on us when we were at the specialty restaurants to make sure everything was okay. Ronin, our Butler and Feliciano, our Room steward were wonderful and kept our cabin perfect!! We had a great cruise and Bermuda is so clean and beautiful... we already booked our next cruise on The Escape and we will be staying in the Haven again!!! Read Less

The ship was nice and th buffet great but the service at all restaurants was very poor. Every meal took over two hours! Guest services gave out incorrect information and there were always lines to get help. Rooms are nice. Only two shows on a 7 day cruise. Comedy show was terrible but Rock of Ages was great. In Bermuda the free ferry to St George's was very nice and made getting around cheaper and easier. One important thing to remember is that Norwegian charges very high gratuities, especially on drink packages and they make it very difficult to adjust them as other cruise lines do. We found that gratuities added almost $400 PER CABIN to the cost of the cruise. That might be somewhat acceptable if the service was good but the ship appeared to be understaffed especially in the restaurants. For example, at one meal it took 45 minutes just place our drink order! We went with Norwegian for a better experience but would not likely use them again. Read Less
