To the traveler who complained that his November 23 cruise from Auckland had the food service "locked down", at least you didn't get Norovirus like more than 200 of us did on the trip from Sydney to Auckland! Someone brought Norovirus onboard in Sydney (we had been fine from Hawaii to Sydney). The result was mass illness - passengers, crew, entertainers; all due to NO lockdown of self-serve for the first 3 days. By the time they instituted a stop of self-serve and closed the taco bar, the virus had spread and 20-25 people PER DAY were getting sick! I would rather have the waiter salt my food than get sick with Noro again. I suspect that the virus continued to infect people on your cruise (although hopefully not as many) and that is why they maintained the sanitary practices. I am a 4 star Mariner - almost a 5 star - and I have already booked 3 cruises in the next 12 months. My husband (who was felled by a serious bacterial infection triggered by the Norovirus) has said that he wants to cancel at least 2 of those trips. We lost a week of our cruise to illness and my husband could have lost his life. For the record, the doctor on board is excellent and the medical center is supplied with IV antibiotics that saved my husband and prevented the medical evacuation that might have happened. In terms of the rest of the cruise, the service was good with the staff being very friendly and attentive. We did find it difficult to get the attention of servers in the Zlido at lunch if we just wanted tea. Everyone just wanted to sell liquor. Dining room food was mostly good but lacking in as much variety as in previous cruises. Desserts were much worse. There were no fruit pies at all and the crisps were more crisp than filling. Most nights there was not even one chocolate dessert which is horrible for a chocoholic! The exc lectures were terrific- when we weren’t too sick to attend - but the evening entertainment was lacking. We don’t like the singing and dancing but love comedians and magicians. One decent comedian and no magic on the entire 33 days. One guy did terrible yo-yo tricks! We mostly read our books or enjoyed the Lincoln Center group in the evenings. Read Less

My wife chose this cruise as it went over the Christmas break and went to the South Pacific. We are a family of 5 and booked 2 rooms. A Verandah Room and an inside Room both on Deck 6. After a slow start in the kids room having a double bed and the no food available for a few hours we got into exploring. The ship is mid sized and while it has around 1800 passengers we didnt ever not get a table in the Lido Market. Self yourself style. We didnt realise we had a fixed dinner table each night so when we turned up the following we night we met our charming dinner companions. We ate with them all but one night. The Vista is alacarte and had lots of variation and choices, a few staples such as the French Onion Soup was on each night. Buying anything on the boat was pricey as it was in US Dollars and oftern with a 15% service charge built in. It offers a lot of shows and entertainment and we saw a few but New Years eve on the pool deck with the BB King band was fantastic.Ice Sculptures, Free champagne near midnight and very fun and noisy. While it is very different from P&O in being an older crowd it was good value and very relaxing. Advice from the Port videos was very helpful and we enjoyed most ports. The tendering went well and the Islands are picture perfect. Service was very good. My wide and daughter used the Spa a bit and the extras on offer during the cruise were interesting. I booked a Shore Excursion direct with a Luganville Tour Guide prior to going and it was half the price of the boat and in Aussie dollars. We took Aussie cash in advance. The Captain was witty and his briefings always made good listening. We had one false fire issue and though there was no alarm he told us what was happening during and after the incident. Very proffessional. We bought Beverage cards for our kids and they didnt spend $50 ea on soft drink as the Lido has Water, Lemonade (juice), Grape Juice , Iced Tea ,Hot Chocolate etc etc. Wince can be dear at dinner but you can get wines by the glass, carafe and bottle. You can take a bottle of Wine or Champagne on board at embarkation as long as you drink it in the Stateroom. We did have an issue with the Auto Gratuity as we thought it was only for over 18 but in fact everyone was charged. So we filled in a form and had it removed for the kids and tipped the server at dinner and the Room steward at the end of the cruise. This does irk Aussies and most aussies commented on it during the Cruise. This is already a dearer cruise than similar P&O etc. The 3 standout things I took away from the boat was 1:Glass rail guards allowing you to see the view from your bed (not a steel plate) 2:Glass Elevators amidships giving you spectacular views going up or down. 3:Complimentary Room Service - Breakfast in your room was wonderful. It was a great ship and I would travel with this company again as long as the Aussie dollars doesn't drop against the Greenback. Read Less

my 3rd time on the Noordam, 9 weeks totol, so i know her well. For the price of apx 110 per night for a balcony the value is terrific. The BBKing band plays 3x per night and are an exellent ship dance band. The Theater is awsome, the shows ok. The piano bar is good, The room good, the food great. The evevators were fast and frequent and all over. There are two one hour happy hours per day, so two good coctails are only 12 dollars including tip. The Microsoft classes are very good and free. The personell are great, and knowledgeable. I would pick a balcony room on floor 4 because it is larger and near the action. I don't have any real complaints. but here are a few. FOR THE SAKE OF OUR PLANET -- I dislike people grabbing four towls for each visit to the pool, (why not take them back to your room for reuse) People throwing away lots of uneaten food, at the buffet seconds are free- so get small portions of what you do not know for shure you will enjoy. Maybe take back to your room what you can not finish for later. At the show if the theater will likely fill up do not leave on empty seat between the person your sittinng next to. Read Less

This was our 2nd cruise with HAL. Last one was on MS Oosterdam in Dec 2014, which was good but some aspects were definitely lacking. By comparison the MS Noordam is far superior in every way. First & foremost, the food was perfect & we ate every dinner at the Vista dining room. Had same table every night, same wonderful servers & wine steward, all gracious, friendly, eager to please, accommodating & spot on with their suggestions! Compliments to the chefs who gave us delectable 3 course meals every single night. Had one dinner at Pinnacle Grill & although lovely it was of similar standard to Vista dining room, so there's really no need to pay the extra money. Lido buffet was also lovely, both for breakfast & lunch. Pasta bar a favourite for us. Staff all over the ship were incredibly friendly, happy & genuine, much more so than on the Oosterdam. Cabin stewards always around to say hello & assist if required. Cabin itself (8040) was kept immaculate & no issues with anything. We truly enjoyed our Noordam cruising experience! The BB King Blues club band were simply amazing & we saw them on many nights. Am more than happy to recommend both HAL and MS Noordam to anyone. Their staff, crew & chefs are a credit to HAL & could teach the Oosterdam a thing or two. Read Less
