I have been on HAL ships 4 or 5 times before including in family groups but have not sailed with HAL in3 or 4 years. Was surprised at the dramatic decline in quality control in all areas - late night snack buffet menu listing two items not actually available, 3 carvery items in dinner buffet repeated twice in a 1 week cruise, one random chair in dining room without arms when all neighbouring ...
We're around 70, have lived abroad, and use cruises primarily to visit interesting ports and meet interesting people. We have no interest in the shows on board and avoid the casino and pools. We chose the HAL cruise from Venice to Barcelona for some new ports and the chance to revisit familiar ones.
Unfortunately, the Med in October had other plans. Port calls for Kotor, Corfu, and Livorno ...
This was our 1st Holland America Cruise. The Nieuw Amsterdam was a very nice ship and not too glitzy. The communal rooms and bars were all very nice but in general walking around the ship was cold and we required a sweater or cardigan. The stateroom was a reasonable size, plenty of storage with extra drawers under the bottom of the bed and plenty of room for the suitcases under there too. It was ...
My wife and I traveled on the Venice to Barcelona cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam on May 16th.
This was our third cruise on Holland America and we expected a special cruise. Unfortunately it was a disappointment.
The Nieuw Amsterdam was to have been their flagship but seemed no better than the other Holland Ships we have been on.
Embarkation – the embarkation was relatively easy however ...
4* Mariner. Did annual TA on Nieuw Amsterdam. Ship was to have come out of dry dock. We embarked in Fort Lauderdale and quickly found out "dry dock" was to continue as we crossed the Atlantic. New carpet in dining areas laid, but didn't look vacuumed. Major Internet and TV upgrades led to outages and on board dry dock employees continuing their trade. The issues should be taken care of in ...
We took a 26 Days Transatlantic Cruise after being on 14 Holland American Cruises - but this one was a real problem - it had just come out of dry-dock and not ready when we embarked in Ft. Lauderdale - there were maintenance - electrical - plumbing problems from the time we left Florida - they had installed new carpeting and the pile from this was everywhere - the strong odor from this was ...
My wife and I did a 26 day cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam from Fort Lauderdale, Fl to Venice –- with 16 stops covering 7 countries. I have been on about 15 cruises covering many lines.
EMBARKATION – Second time I’ve boarded a HAL ship in Fort Lauderdale and fairly long procedure both times. Very poor boarding process compared to Port Canaveral. Overall Embarkation Grade: D
CONDITION ...
HAL could not take my luxery cruise to the last 5-10% to make it what they claim it is.
The concept of a cruise and a world wind tour of Europe was appealing to me and I did have an excursion almost every day. The conceriage on board was dedicated to the penthouses and deluxe suites. He was about as useless a tits on a bull. Let's just call him Worst for now. Out of 7 requests to the Neptune ...
Embarkment in Venice was very smooth. Used Hal's transfers. Transfers are very expensive for a 30 min. drive; but efficient. The ship is clean; but plain. This is not an elegant ship. Carpets in front of the elevators are showing wear; but the ship was kept very clean. Staff was excellent. Always smiles and they are very accommodating.
The ports were all OK. Only took the ship's tours in ...
Holland America Line (HAL) prides itself of being a "signature of excellence". That is far from being true in our experience. If I had to grade them, a "C" would be a fair grade.
Certainly, you will find high quality food and an attractive international atmosphere, but there're aspects where HAL needs clear improvements, especially during Summer cruises. If you're travelling with children, ...
