CostaFortuna Begins Sea Trials

August 26, 2003

CostaFortuna, the Italian cruise line's latest ship-in-progress, is a step closer to its November launch date after beginning sea trials this week. The 105,000-ton, 2,720-passenger ship - the largest in the company's history - will, during the sea trial process, undergo a variety of operational tests on systems, engines and equipment. The testing lasts until September 6, when CostaFortuna returns to Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard.

CostaFortuna, similar to ships in sister company Carnival Cruise Line's Destiny class, will have 11 bars, four restaurants, a three-tiered main show lounge, three swimming pools, casino, spa and disco. The ship's design - overseen by Carnival's Joe Farcus - is inspired by legendary Italian ocean liners.

CostaFortuna is the first of a twin set; sister ship CostaMagica will be launched at the end of 2004.
