Celebrity Edge during sea trials, aft-view

(11:58 a.m. EDT) -- Celebrity Cruises' highly anticipated new ship, Celebrity Edge, has successfully completed its first sea trials.

The sea trials, which spanned from July 26 to 29, assessed Celebrity Edge's seaworthiness, machinery and engines; sea trials are a standard procedure for all new ships. Weather conditions during the sea trials were optimal, offering both rough and calm sea conditions for testing, the line said in a statement.

Celebrity Edge will undergo its second and final round of sea trials in September while receiving other finishing touches at the shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, in preparation for its late November 2018 debut.

Standout features of the 2,900-passenger ship include "infinite" balconies, which can be either an outdoor space or provide more room indoors with the touch of a button; a "floating" platform called the Magic Carpet, which can double as a tender station or restaurant/bar depending on where it's located; six new-to-Celebrity restaurants; and the largest spa in the fleet. See what the spaces will look like.

After it launches, the ship will operate a series of Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale, before repositioning to the Mediterranean; it also will sail a mini-cruise from Southampton, UK.
