Skagway, Alaska. The scenic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad.

(UPDATE; 8:20 a.m. EDT) -- Passenger service on White Pass has been reinstated as of Monday, June 4. "White Pass & Yukon Route operations will be restored to full service on Monday, June 4, 2018," according to a statement from the rail line. "Passenger trains were suspended after a rock strike to 7A Bridge between Skagway and the White Pass Summit on May 30, 2018. Crews and engineers worked to assess and make the necessary repairs to the bridge before service could resume. White Pass would like to thank our business partners and vendors as we worked through this temporary interruption to service."

The White Pass & Yukon Route train ride, the most popular shore excursion on Alaska cruises that call in Skagway, has been temporarily canceled by all cruise lines due to a rockslide.

In a May 30 statement, representatives from White Pass said: "Due to a rock strike on Bridge 7A, White Pass is suspending service to complete an assessment and make repairs. All passenger trains have been canceled until work is completed."

The company added that it estimates service will be restored in the next few days.

"We have canceled trains today and will be making determinations to restore service once all repairs have been made and inspected by the appropriate parties," Jacqueline Taylor-Rose, marketing manager for the White Pass & Yukon Route, told Cruise Critic. "We will be updating our tour partners, including the cruise lines, as soon as we know more."

Princess Cruises -- one of the biggest players in Alaska, with seven ships sailing the region during the 2018 season -- issued its own statement.

"Guest's excursions involving a segment of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad have been modified and will continue operation," the line said. "Pre-booked roundtrip White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad excursions that were cancelled will be refunded to guest folio." It's not clear how far in advance excursions have been canceled.

No word yet on when cruise lines will again offer the scenic rail as an excursion this season, which typically kicks off in May and lasts through September. Members on the Cruise Critic forums have been weighing in on the return of the popular shore tour.

Cruise Critic member abba1102 said: "I emailed [the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad] this morning asking about our excursion on June 9. We are scheduled to do the bus up and train down. I asked if train isn't running then could we do bus both ways."

Others, such as Cruise Critic member yags, are already looking at backup plans: "We are scheduled to take the train June 29th. I am fully confident that it will happen. Our group decided to pick a plan B excursion now rather than try looking for one at the last second at the excursion desk. I would be disappointed if we could not go on the train but there is another choice just in case."
