(11:15 a.m. EDT) -- Silversea Cruises' Silver Whisper will undergo a major refurbishment in December 2018 to update public areas and suites and add new Zodiacs, to prepare it for its 2020 World Cruise to Antarctica. The ship previously received a more minor refurbishment in late 2017, which saw updates to La Terrazza and the Observation and Panorama Lounges, as well as technical upgrades.
The 2018 makeover aims to give Silver Whisper a new look, based on the design of Silversea's flagship Silver Muse. The Restaurant will receive a full upgrade, though it will remain the same venue and not be transformed into Atlantide and Indochine, a la Muse. La Dame will also receive new curtains and flooring. Other public areas getting refreshed include the casino, the card/conference room and the Zagara Spa (which will get new furniture and state-of-the-art fitness equipment). Silversea has even partnered with Radiopark to enhance the background music played onboard.
All passenger suites will be updated with a Muse-inspired new look, including 40-inch flat-screen TVs with interactive programming and redone bathrooms. The nine Terrace Suites on Deck 5, which share a common outdoor space, will be turned into Veranda Suites with private balconies.
Finally, the line will install storage space and a crane for the Zodiac boats that will be added to allow passengers on the world cruise and other voyages to better access remote locations.
The refurbishment will take place between December 8 and 19, 2018 in Freeport, Bahamas.
Even with new-build Silver Moon launching in 2020, Silversea recently has been investing a lot in its existing fleet. The line is completing a major refurbishment of Silver Spirit, which involved adding a new midsection to the vessel to increase its size and passenger capacity. Silver Cloud was transformed from a cruise ship into a luxury expedition vessel in fall 2017; Silver Whisper, Wind, Explorer and Discoverer also received refurbishments in 2016 and 2017.
