(3:10 p.m. EDT) -- Princess Cruises is offering a new shore excursion program that focuses on immersing passengers in the culinary cultures of the destinations it visits thanks to a new partnership with food lifestyle brand Bon Appetit.
The small-group tours will provide insight into regional ingredients and cooking styles, while local chefs and other special guests will host cooking demonstrations and tastings. Passengers can choose from two types of excursions: exclusive Bon Appetit tours and recommended tours, endorsed by Bon Appetit.
"There is a clear connection between the love of travel and experiencing food found in cultures around the world," said Adam Rapoport, editor in chief of Bon Appetit. "Collaborating with a destination leader like Princess Cruises, we're able to bring the passion of culinary inspired journeys to guests we might not otherwise reach."
A total of 30 shore excursions will be available for booking in various destinations -- such as Norway, Argentina, Alaska and Russia -- at the beginning of their 2018 cruise seasons. Below are a few of the highlights, by port.
Exclusive Bon Appetit Tours
Kristiansand, Norway: During the "Taste of the North" tour, the head chef at Hotel Norge will prepare traditional Norwegian delicacies for passengers to sample, including moose steak and cookies, with regional wine. The tour will include lunch and visits to noteworthy culinary landmarks.
Dublin, Ireland: Passengers on this tour will learn how to make scones from scratch at a Victorian farmhouse in the countryside. The class will be led by Catherine Fulivio, chef and proprietor of Ballyknocken Cookery School, House and Restaurant.
Bon Appetit-Recommended Tours
Copenhagen, Denmark: This recommended tour combines lunching on Danish sandwiches, sightseeing historic palaces and castles, a canal-boat ride and a visit to Tivoli Gardens.
Astoria, Oregon: Acclaimed chef Chris Holen will gather passengers in an open kitchen, where they will sample seafood dishes while sipping local wine.
Buenos Aires, Argentina: From grilled provoleta cheese to sliced chorizo and steak, passengers will learn how to make traditional Argentinian dishes while sampling local Malbec wine. There also will be an opportunity to make dessert at the end of the demo.
Juneau, Alaska: A walking tour of some of Juneau's best restaurants will give passengers the opportunity to sample everything from Alaska's award-winning crab bisque, fish tacos, smoked port and local beer and wine.
Valencia, Spain: Following a cultural tour that includes visits to historic landmarks, passengers can enjoy a traditional paella lunch hosted by a local chef.
St. Petersburg, Russia: At a local restaurant, passengers will learn how to make pelmini, a classic Russian meat pie; then indulge in their creations while sipping 80-proof vodka.
The news of Princess' Bon Appetit partnership comes days after sister brand Holland America revealed a series of culinary-themed cruises, featuring celebrity chefs.
