(3:50 p.m. EST) -- Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas is switching winter homeports, relocating from San Juan to Miami in January 2019.
The cruise line is making the change because the larger-capacity Freedom of the Seas is coming to San Juan, replacing Adventure of the Seas, says Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Celia de la Llama. As previously announced, Adventure of the Seas will be sailing out of Cape Liberty in Bayonne, NJ.
The change will affect Jewel sailings from January 9 to April 27, 2019. Royal Caribbean is offering three options to passengers who have already booked on these cruises.
Option 1: Passengers can switch to San Juan-based Freedom of the Seas on their choice of sailings departing from January through April 2019. They'll also receive a shipboard credit of $200, or $400 for those in suites, and $50 for each additional passenger sharing a cabin. The company will also reimburse passengers' airline rebooking charges for up to $200 for domestic flights and $300 for international flights.
Option 2: Passengers can rebook on any other Royal Caribbean sailing and receive the same amounts of onboard credit based on stateroom category and number of passengers.
Option 3: They can cancel and receive a full refund.
Jewel of the Seas is scheduled to sail in the Mediterranean through fall 2018. When it arrives in Miami, it will offer five-night Western Caribbean sailings and nine-night Southern Caribbean sailings, as well as two 16-night Panama Canal itineraries and a 14-night transatlantic cruise from Miami to Rome in March 2019.
