(2:30 p.m. EDT) -- After its maiden season in the Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises' newest ship Celebrity Edge will head overseas to offer a series of Mediterranean cruises.
The 2,900-passenger ship, which launches fall 2018, will homeport in Barcelona and Rome; it also will offer a two-night mini-cruise out of Southampton, England.
Celebrity Edge will offer seven-night Barcelona and Rome sailings in the peak season and early summer of 2019. In fall 2019, it will sail roundtrip 10-night Western Mediterranean and 11-night Eastern cruises.
The seven-night "open-jaw" itineraries are unique, calling at a total of 11 ports, with only one repeat port of call (Florence). Passengers also can opt for a back-to-back 14-night cruise.
In addition, Edge will:
- Sail two new ports for Celebrity: Nauplion, Greece (11-night) and Santa Margherita, Italy (10-night)
- Offer longer stay in ports including Ibiza, Monte Carlo, Naples
- Call in at 30 ports in 10 countries and offer five overnights.
"From our expansive new itineraries, including three exciting new ports of call and overnights in 16 cities across the region, to our specially curated shore excursions, there's a reason we're continually recognised and win multiple awards," said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises.
Edge is being touted as a game changer for Celebrity, pioneering a revolutionary new design which sees "seamless" (or infinite) balconies which increase cabin size and a platform on the side of the ship which doubles as a tender station and restaurant/bar called the "Magic Carpet."
The ship will begin offering cruises from Fort Lauderdale December 2018, following its launch. It will alternate between weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Celebrity has not yet revealed where Edge will go after fall 2019.
