(5:30 p.m. EDT) --- As part of its ongoing investment in offering cruises from Mobile, Carnival Cruise Line has extended its contract with the Alabama port city. Previously, the contract was due to expire this December.

The new agreement means Carnival Fantasy will sail from Mobile through December 2018. Carnival Fantasy 2018 itineraries, including a slew of new options revealed April 2017, have already been available for booking. (It's customary for cruise lines to open inventory several months out.)

"We are very pleased to be continuing and further building upon our outstanding partnership with Mobile," the line said in a statement.

Carnival Fantasy offers four-, five-, six- and eight-night Western Caribbean cruises; eight-night Eastern Caribbean cruises; and 10-night Panama Canal cruises out of Mobile year-round.

The port of Mobile underwent a $4 million renovation fall 2016. The ongoing commitment from Carnival is a boon for the city, which had lost cruises for five years after Carnival Elation departed in 2011.
