(10:35 a.m. EDT) -- Silversea Expeditions -- the adventure arm of luxury cruise line, Silversea Cruises -- has created a new training program to recruit and educate expedition leaders for its three, soon to be four, ships.

New recruits begin their studies with webinars about life at sea and interacting with Silversea passengers. Then they will get more hands-on training in first aid, maritime safety and boat handling. Finally, they will do a six-week training stint aboard Silver Cloud, after that ship undergoes a massive refurbishment to transform from a luxury cruise ship into an expedition vessel. Onboard, the new expedition team members will learn about the environment and sustainability, cultural sensitivity and best practices in guiding passengers.

"Our new leadership training academy underscores our commitment to exploring the world with the absolute best team of hand-picked experts to guide and enlighten our guests on expeditions," said Conrad Combrink, Silversea's vice president of expedition planning & strategic development, in a company statement.

The expedition teams on every Silversea Expeditions cruise are experts in the areas of wildlife, anthropology, geology and history. They enhance the guest experience with onboard lectures and workshops, nature walks ashore and guided Zodiac trips to view wildlife and scenery.
