(3:30 p.m. EDT) -- Celebrity Cruises has informed Summit passengers, scheduled to depart from San Juan on March 27 for a one-week cruise, that their cruise departure has been delayed by one day.
The delay is related to previous technical issues with the ship's propulsion system, which have been forcing Celebrity Summit to sail at reduced speeds. (The same issue forced the Summit to remain docked in Cozumel earlier this month for more than three days as crew attempted to repair the issue.)
No ports will be missed, but a sea day will be cut from the itinerary.
In a letter to travel agents Celebrity said: "We sincerely apologize for this unexpected development and its impact on their [clients] cruises. As a gesture of goodwill, and to thank your clients for their understanding, Celebrity Cruises will provide each guest with a one night refund of their cruise fare paid and provide them with an onboard credit in the amount of 50 percent of a one full day of the cruise fare paid for this sailing."
The onboard credit will be applied directly to passengers' onboard accounts and can be used for any onboard purchase or served. Any unused portion will be refunded at the end of the cruise.
Passengers who purchased airfare through Celebrity Choice Air will be hosted by Celebrity in a hotel in San Juan for the night of March 27; those who purchased airfare independently will be provided with up to $200 per cabin onboard credit to cover airfare change fees and incidentals.
