Police: Man Who Disappeared Off Statendam Jumped

January 31, 2003
The 73-year old passenger who disappeared off Holland America's Statendam three weeks ago -- as the ship was concluding a San Diego-based cruise to Hawaii -- jumped off, according to investigators. The man, who hailed from Brooklyn and then, more recently, Bullhead City, Arizona, and Priest River, Idaho, had been reported missing early on disembarkation morning when crew members, who had entered his cabin, thought his non-presence suspicious. Onboard, ship staffers conducted a thorough investigation without finding him. The search for the missing traveler then extended off-board, as Statendam officials contacted the authorities. Ultimately, investigators from the U.S. Coast Guard and the San Diego Unified Port District conducted a search before determining the man had jumped overboard. While no body has been found, the police report included an interview from a friend who said that the passenger, who had been suffering from various illnesses, may have planned the disappearance.
