(2:45 p.m. EST) -- Following last month's announcement that Princess Cruises will be the first Carnival Corp. brand to receive new Ocean Medallion technology, the line has revealed that Island Princess will become the fourth Ocean Medallion-class vessel in the fleet.
The ship will be outfitted with the appropriate receivers in time for its Alaska cruise season, which kicks off in May 2018.
Ocean Medallions, wearable discs that store cruiser profile information, will serve as passengers' room keys and onboard charge cards. They'll also allow for easier embarkation and debarkation, as well as luggage identification. When paired with digital screens throughout the ship, they can even recommend activities of interest to each passenger, based individual cruiser profiles that will be filled out prior to sailing.
The medallions are set to debut aboard Regal Princess this November, followed by rollouts on Royal Princess and Caribbean Princess in early 2018. The wearables are eventually expected to make their way to other Carnival Corp. brands, which include Carnival, Holland America, Cunard, Seabourn, Costa, P&O U.K. and P&O Australia.
