(3:35 p.m. EST) -- Officials broke ground today on Terminal F, PortMiami's new cruise terminal, which will house MSC Divina, and the upcoming MSC Seaside.

The project entails renovating and expanding an existing terminal, as well as constructing a new building for MSC's ships.

MSC Cruises continues its expansion into the North American cruise market with MSC Seaside -- debut December 2017 -- and has been actively involved in the process of designing Terminal , according to a news release.

The new Terminal F will include:

  • An expanded waiting area that will accommodate 1,500 people
  • A private VIP waiting area for MSC Yacht Club passengers on Seaside
  • Dedicated waiting areas for cruisers who booked the Aurea Experience with priority embarkation and MSC Black Card members
  • A "more flexible and efficient" baggage claim area as well as advancements that will work with Seaside's "smart ship technology" that will lead to a "smoother debarkation process"

Completion of the terminal is expected a year from now, on December 1, 2017. MSC Seaside is scheduled to launch three weeks later on December 21.

The float out ceremony of MSC Seaside recently took place at the Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy.
