(4:10 p.m. EDT) -- Miss USA Deshauna Barber, the first military woman to win the crown, will serve as godmother to Carnival's newest ship, Carnival Vista, when the vessel is christened in New York on November 4.
"Deshauna is the ideal candidate to serve as Carnival Vista's godmother, embodying the spirit of commitment and sacrifice to those who protect our freedom each and every day," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement.
The christening ceremony will be one in a series of events taking place onboard as part of an overnight gala to spotlight Operation Homefront, an organization that aids military families. Several of those families will be onboard for the festivities, which will also include a concert by country music star Carrie Underwood.
The gala will kick off Vista's U.S. sailings, starting with an 11-night Carnival Journeys Caribbean voyage, roundtrip from New York. The ship will then relocate from New York to Miami, where it will homeport year-round and offer a series of Caribbean itineraries.
