Viking Star

(12:05 p.m. EDT) -- Viking Ocean Cruises is removing and refitting all shower glass on its new ship, Viking Star, following two onboard safety incidents.

Two Viking Star passengers reported incidents where glass from a side panel in the shower shattered without provocation on an extensive thread in the Cruise Critic forums. Photos were also posted.

Viking Ocean Cruises responded to the concerns with a lengthy update to Cruise Critic members. After the incidents were reported, the Viking Star technical team consulted with the design engineers, the glass manufacturers and independent third-party glass experts, a line spokesperson said.

"The conclusion reached is that these were isolated incidents; they were not part of a chain of events and do not correlate to a particular stateroom category or location on the ship. According to the engineers and experts, the failures resulted from a combination of the settling process that occurs with new ships and the incorrect fitting of the glass. The experts continue to monitor the situation to ensure it is resolved."

As a preventive measure, Viking Ocean Cruises is removing and refitting all shower glass with new materials, the spokesperson said. "The safety of our guests and staff is always our top priority and we are extremely upset that a few of our guests have had to experience this situation. Please know that we are working tirelessly onboard to prevent any similar incidents from happening again."

Viking Star debuted in spring 2015 as the first oceangoing vessel for Viking Ocean Cruises, owned by the same company that runs Viking River Cruises. The vessel suffered engine trouble earlier in August but has since resumed its regular sailings.
