(6 p.m. EST) -- Celebrity Cruises will build two new 2,900-passenger ships, according to a statement released by the line late Thursday.
Referred to collectively as "Project EDGE," the vessels will be constructed at STX France and offer "small-ship itineraries with large-ship amenities." At 117,000 tons each, they will be smaller than the line's Solstice-class ships but larger than its Millennium-class vessels.
"Our new class of ship will set the standard for premium world travel and deliver the next generation of modern luxury experiences that our guests know and love," Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, said in a news release.
Celebrity's most recent new-build came in 2012, when Celebrity Reflection, the line's final Solstice-class ship, debuted.
Delivery for the first ship is expected for fall 2018; the second will debut in the early part of 2020. The order is contingent upon the completion of customary conditions, including financing.
