Celebrity Cancels Additional Xpedition Cruise to Galapagos

June 5, 2013
Celebrity-Xpedition (10:41 a.m. EDT) --Celebrity Cruises canceled its June 9 Xpedition sailing -- the second such cancellation this month -- because its license to enter Galapagos National Park is suspended.

Celebrity offered all passengers on the June 9 sailing full refunds along with 25 percent future Xpedition cruise credits, valid within the next two years. Celebrity will issue full refunds for airfare purchased through the company. Celebrity will reimburse change fees incurred by passengers who purchased outside airfare.

Local authorities issued the 45-day suspension after discovering 12 kilograms of frozen lobster tails the ship was transporting out of season.

Although "purchased legally during the season from local fishermen certified by the Park," the dispute lies in a new regulation that requires all lobsters to be consumed within five days of the end of season -- a regulation enacted March 11 but not published until April 22.
