Carnival Takes Delivery of Liberty

Carnival has taken delivery of the newest addition to its fleet, the 110,000-ton, 2,974-passenger Carnival Liberty. The ship is in Monfalcone, Italy, gearing up for the July 20 launch of the line's first-ever season in Europe.

But first, a whole slew of celebratory activities are in store for Liberty. Tomorrow, the brand-new vessel will set sail for a special three-day introductory cruise, followed by a "pier-side overnight gala" in Civitavecchia (Rome) on July 19 where the ship will be officially named and christened by Academy Award-winning actress-turned-godmother Mira Sorvino.

The fourth in its class, the ship will feature 22 lounges and bars, a sushi bar, a supper club, and an expansive workout and spa facility. Carnival Liberty will sail 12-day Mediterranean cruises -- visiting Naples, Dubrovnik, Venice, Messina, Barcelona, Cannes and Livorno -- roundtrip from Civitavecchia through October 12. Afterwards, Carnival Liberty will depart Civitavecchia for a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing to Ft. Lauderdale for a season of six- and eight-day Bahamas/Caribbean voyages; Liberty will return to Europe in May of 2006 for another season of Mediterranean cruises.
