(11 a.m. ET) – Celebrity Cruises has revealed best-selling author, activist and CEO of non-profit organisation Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani, will be the godmother of Celebrity Apex.
Saujani will name Celebrity Apex at a christening ceremony in Southampton on March 30, ahead of its maiden voyage.
The author of "Brave, Not Perfect" has been chosen as Apex’s godmother "because she is a game-changing visionary, she is the perfect godmother for a game-changing ship like Celebrity Apex", said Celebrity Cruises’ President and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.
Lutoff-Perlo added: "Reshma is bridging the gap in the historically male-dominated technology industry. She is evolving the image of what a computer programmer looks like and does, inspiring a whole new generation of girls and women to bravely pursue this field."
Saujani said: "Girls Who Code is committed to giving girls more visible role models in computer science and helping them see that this is a field where they can really thrive."
Celebrity has confirmed it will work with Girls Who Code to offer educational coding programmes as part of the cruise line’s Camp at Sea S.T.E.M. experiences on Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge.
Saujani launched Girls Who Code in the US in 2012 and it has reached 185,000 girls at nearly every stage of their educational journey since. The organisation seeks to close the gender pay gap in new entry-level computer science jobs by 2027.
Among Saujani's many recognitions, she became the first Indian American woman to run for US Congress in 2010. She has also been named one of Fortune World’s Greatest Leaders; WSJ Magazine Innovator of the Year and Forbes Most Powerful Women Changing the World, among other accolades.
Apex is the line’s second Edge-class ship, following Celebrity Edge, which launched in December 2018 and was named by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai.
Apex will offer the same game-changing features that debuted on Edge, including Infinite Verandas, the Magic Carpet and the Rooftop Garden.
The 2,900-passenger ship will offer five sailings in Northern Europe from Southampton before sailing in the Mediterranean throughout November 2020 before repositioning to Florida for the winter season.
