Super Typhoon Hagibis Forces Cruise Line Itinerary Changes in Japan

(9:45 a.m. EST) -- Super Typhoon Hagibis, which is heading towards Tokyo as the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, has forced two cruise lines to make itinerary changes.
According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, Hagibis is a large-scale and violent storm with maximum sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour.
The storm is predicted to hit the capital of Japan on Saturday, October 12, with torrential rain and strong winds forecast, before moving northwest. Warnings are currently in place for Ogasawara, a sub-prefecture of Tokyo.
Silversea and Celebrity Cruises currently have ships in the region.
Here are the cruise ship changes reported so far.
Silversea Cruises
Silver Muse, which is due to depart Tokyo on October 11 on a 14-night round-trip cruise, will sail north of Japan to avoid the typhoon, with calls in Osaka, Aburatsu and Nagasaki canceled. The ship will depart Tokyo early on October 11; followed by a sea day on October 12; Hakodate on October 13; a sea day on October 14, Maizuru (for Kyoto) on October 15 and another sea day on October 16. The ship will resume its original itinerary from October 16.
Celebrity Cruises
According to a statement from the cruise line: "Due to weather conditions related to Typhoon Hagibis, the Tokyo arrival and departure for Celebrity Millennium has been delayed by two days. The safety of our guests and crew is our number-one priority, and we are consulting directly with guests to assist with their scheduling changes."
The ship, which was due to spend more than 48 hours in Yokohama, near Tokyo, from October 11-13, will now arrive October 14 and depart the same day, replacing a call on Kobe. The ship will call on Shimizu October 15, which was previously scheduled to be a sea day. Calls on Hiroshima and Kochi, planned for October 16 and 17 respectively, will be reversed. The vessel's original itinerary will resume on October 18 with a call on Beppu.
