Latest Hurricane Dorian Cruise Ship Itinerary Changes

(1:40 p.m. EDT) -- After bringing hurricane-strength weather to Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia and Nova Scotia, Dorian, now a post-tropical cyclone, passed over Newfoundland and Labrador on September 8 before heading out to sea.

Beginning September 2, Dorian pounded Grand Bahama Island for more than 30 hours with powerful storm surge and catastrophic winds. At least 40 people have been confirmed dead, with hundreds missing and 13,000 houses feared damaged or destroyed.

The dangerous conditions have prompted numerous cruise ship itinerary changes and cancellations, as well as port closures in the Bahamas and up and down the east coast of North America.

All affected cruise ports have reopened (with the exception of a couple of cruise line private islands, which will reopen soon), but Grand Bahama's Freeport sustained so much damage that the docking facilites are currently operating only to receive aid for the devastated island.

Below is a breakdown of the affected cruise ships:

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Dream The Disney Dream sailing on Monday, September 9, will sail as scheduled from Port Canaveral and is currently expected to visit Castaway Cay on Thursday September 12 instead of Wednesday September 11, as long as all necessary work is completed.

Holland America Line

Zuiderdam: The September 7 call to Sydney, Nova Scotia, was canceled, along with a September 8 call to Saint Pierre et Miquelon. Instead, the ship spent a day at sea on the 7th, sailing to Gaspe for arrival on September 8. The remainder of the itinerary is planned to remain as scheduled, including a September 9 call on Corner Brook.

Veendam: Veendam's current sailing is due to visit Halifax on September 9. For now, the call will happen as planned, but the ship will arrive in port one hour later than scheduled, at 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.

Royal Caribbean

Grandeur of the Seas: A call on St. John, New Brunswick, will be replaced by a call on Portland, Maine, on September 10.

Majesty of the Seas: On September 9, instead of a sea day, Majesty will spend some time at Grand Bahama Island to help with hurricane relief efforts.

Navigator of the Seas: On the morning of September 9, Navigator of the Seas will call on Grand Bahama Island to assist with hurricane relief before visiting Nassau from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Serenade of the Seas: Serenade of the Seas' August 25 sailing traded calls on Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia, for time in Sept-Iles, Quebec. The sailing will be extended by one day, concluding in Boston on September 11 instead of September 10.

As a result of the ship's late arrival in Boston, Serenade's September 10 sailing will instead depart September 11 and arrive in King's Wharf on September 13 -- a day later than scheduled.

Royal Caribbean is not publicly posting compensation for shortened cruises or options for booked passengers wishing to cancel. The line will reach out to passengers directly.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Grand Celebration: Grand Celebration's September 9 and 11 sailings have been canceled to allow the ship to provide aid in the Bahamas. Affected passengers can choose from three options: rebook and sail by December 24, 2019, to receive $100 onboard credit per cabin; rebook and sail after December 24, 2019, with no penalty fees and the original rate protected (excluding holiday cruises) but no onboard credit; or choose not to rebook and receive a full refund.

Silversea Cruises

Silver Wind: Due to residual conditions from Dorian, Silver Wind is facing strong storms on its way from Reykjavik to Newfoundland. As a result, it canceled a planned visit to St. John's, Newfoundland, on September 9 and a call on St. Pierre September 10. The ship is still scheduled to dock in Corner Brook on Wednesday, September 11.

Other Lines

Windstar's Star Pride: The ship will call on Portland, Maine, on September 10.
