(10 a.m. GMT) -- Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) has been forced to cancel a 10-day sailing on Columbus tomorrow (June 5) due to a "technical problem".

The 1,400-passenger ship hit a "foreign object" on leaving Amsterdam last Friday during a previous Fjordland cruise.

The ship was subsequently cleared to sail, but then developed a technical issue and was forced to return to port for further investigations.

Columbus will need to undertake a short dry dock period for a full inspection and remedial works before resuming service, according to CMV.

The ship was due to set sail from Tilbury on a 10-night British Isles discovery cruise, visiting Scotland, Ireland and the Isles of Scilly.

CMV is offering three alternatives for passengers affected by the cancellation:

  • Transfer your cruise reservation to a special newly introduced 11-night British Isles Discovery cruise sailing onboard the line's newest ship Vasco da Gama -- which launches on Thursday -- departing from London Tilbury on 2 September 2019.
  • Option two, passengers can transfer their cruise reservation to any published CMV sailing of up to 15 nights departing from 1 October 2019 onwards and receive a 50 percent discount on the best available fare.
  • And option three, passengers can cancel their cruise reservation, receive a full refund and receive a 30 percent discount on a future CMV sailing of up to 15 nights' duration.

All options are subject to availability, booking conditions and are valid until Friday 5 July 2019.

A statement from the line read: "CMV would once again like to extend their sincere apologies for the late cancellation of this cruise holiday and for the disruption caused. CMV look forward to welcoming the affected passengers on board an alternative cruise in the future."

The news first came to light on the Cruise Critic Boards yesterday.
