Q&A: Celebrity Cruises Captain Tasos Celebrates Valentine’s Day

(4:30 p.m. AEST) -- Love is in the ocean air as Celebrity Solstice’s Captain Tasos Kafetzis shares his hot tips for romance afloat this Valentine’s Day -- from his favourite ports to ideas for couples to get cosy on the ship.

Q: Is anything special planned for Valentine’s Day at sea?

A: Here on Celebrity Solstice we have a lot of activities for couples to celebrate this special occasion -- the celebration of love -- so we’re going to have something for everyone. From those who want to spend time on their own, to enjoying parties with many other guests, anyone can find what they really like. On Valentine’s night, inside the Grand Epernay, all female guests will receive a rose as a sign of love from us to them.

Q: What would be the perfect date night on the ship?

A: We have so many things to do. You can start with a nice spa treatment, like a couples massage, and then book a specialty restaurant. My personal favourite is Tuscan Grille, which has infinity views of the ship’s stern and open ocean, with candle-light and great food. If you want to stay in your room, we can bring room service, or you can try a Taste of Film, where you watch a movie from the lawn, and we bring you a menu that matches the scenes of the film.

Q: What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever seen onboard?

A: My mirror every morning. I’m kidding! As a Captain, I can perform marriage ceremonies, and I had one couple that were married for 60 years who came onboard for a vow renewal. They had spent their whole life together, and they were there holding hands and you could swear they had just met. It was one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

Q: Is a cruise also a good option for singles looking for love?

A: Yes, for sure. Cruising is a good option as there’s always a lot of single people onboard trying to find their other half. According to Greek mythology, when Zeus created humans, he at first gave us two heads, four arms and four legs; but he was so afraid of their power that he split them in half. Since then every human is part of one whole, so it’s a good opportunity to try and find your other half onboard.

Q: Are there any quiet areas or secret spots for couples to get some privacy?

A: We have lots of private, secret areas onboard, like the Relaxation Room on Deck 11, the spa treatment rooms and the alcoves on the lawn which you can hire to have your own space and watch the sunset while the ship is sailing. Or you can enjoy time together and have breakfast in your stateroom, on your own balcony, where our stateroom attendant will make sure your room looks like a honeymoon suite.

Q: What are the most romantic ports in the world?

A: By far my favourite romantic port is Santorini in Greece. It’s a beautiful getaway and one of the most popular islands in Greece. There, you can climb to one kilometre above sea level for infinity views. It’s the number-one destination for couples in Greece. When our ship is sailing in Alaska, my favourite port as a romantic destination is Victoria in Canada. It has beautiful gardens, the city is spotless, and I find myself walking around there and feeling relaxed on a whole other level.

Q: How will you be celebrating Valentine’s Day?

A: That’s a secret – I’ll keep that to myself, but I have plans.
