(4:45 p.m. EST) -- River cruise line Emerald Waterways is upping the ante on its active programming with the addition of new onboard fitness classes.
The classes, debuting on Emerald Waterways' seven Europe-based Star Ships in April 2019, include yoga, Pilates, aqua aerobics in the indoor heated pools, and one-mile walks on the open-air track. Each class will be coordinated by an experienced "activity manager," who also will oversee EmeraldACTIVE shore excursions. There are no additional charges for the classes.
Emerald Waterways' EmeraldACTIVE program launched in 2017 as a series of complimentary tours geared toward active travelers. Options include guided biking, hiking and canoeing tours. Yoga classes had been previously offered on select sailings.
Activity managers also will assist passengers with planning independent biking trips or athletic walks in port. Emerald Waterways' Star Ships each carry a small fleet of free-to-use bicycles onboard.
"River cruisers of all ages are increasingly interested in active, health-conscious travel, and we're committed to offering programming that delivers a wide variety of options," the line's VP of brand management, Lisa Norton, said in a statement.
Emerald Waterways' fares include shore excursions in every port, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, transfers and tips. The line was named Best Value for Money among river cruise lines in Cruise Critic's 2018 Editors' Picks Awards.
