A seven-deck LED screen -- reportedly the tallest ever seen at sea -- will form the centrepiece of Hurtigruten's new 530-passenger expedition ship Roald Amundsen.

Scheduled to launch this May, the first of the line's three Explorer Class vessels will feature the 17.5 metre tall by 6.5 metre wide screen, where onboard lectures and presentations will be broadcast live along with transmissions and live coverage from outside the ship. The content will include landscapes and images taken by the ship's photographer

The screen, situated in the atrium of the ship, will have a total surface area of 114 square metres and a resolution exceeding 4K Ultra-HD.

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said: "Our focus on state-of-the-art design, innovation and technology is not limited to the exterior and will take the guest experience to a whole new level. By introducing the tallest LED screen at sea, we will bring - and magnify - the splendid beauty of the passing nature to the guests inside.

"With stunning image quality, the technology offers endless possibilities. We can use it to stream live lectures and presentations, to set the theme for the voyage, or just create a special atmosphere. But most importantly, it will be utilised to broadcast the spectacular nature to our guests on board in a format never seen before."

Named after a famous Norwegian polar explorer, Roald Amundsen has been purpose-built to sail in Antarctic and polar waters. Hurtigruten's Explorer Class ships will feature environmentally-friendly, electric hybrid engines, the first time a cruise line has employed such technology.

Sister vessel MS Fridtjof Nansen will launch in 2020 and a third and yet unnamed sibling vessel will debut in 2021.
