I was looking for a quick last-minute mini-break, so this 4 day cruise was ideal and priced right for me, a single traveler from the New York area. One day at sea - one day in Bermuda - one day at sea. There was some confusion about boarding times by those who booked early, but that didn't affect me, since I booked a few days prior to sailing. I walked onto the ship with no wait. However, this was likely due to the fact that the ship had no passengers to disembark upon arrival. Norwegian sells hard from the moment you get on board. Nearly everything is at an upgrade and added fee. If that makes you feel ill-at-ease, this is not the line for you. The staff is courteous and efficient, but due to the large numbers, there's always one or two still training and inexperienced. The Getaway is a very large ship and when fully booked (4,000 passengers) it can be chaotic - especially during the 'muster' / boat drill. The ship also attracts many non-English speaking people which can sometimes cause confusion and conflict due to the lack of communication possible. This is a fact, not a problem. Patience is needed at all times on a big ship like this. For first timers to Bermuda, I highly recommend the bus tour of the full island. It takes five hours and visits St. George and Hamilton and everything in between. Guides / drivers are knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. I wish it were not raining nearly the whole time, but this is in mother nature's hands, so we made the best of it. My only complaint is that since it was an atypical trip length, there were all sorts of omissions and errors, especially in the Freestyle Daily newsletter. A happy mistake was that they charged us too much for port taxes and refunded them in onboard credit. The ship docked in Bermuda and it was 45 minutes before the first announcement about the arrival - and that was to inform us that the ship was not yet cleared. When a ship arrives - an announcement of status should be made immediately to avoid confusion. Read Less

I chose this cruise because it was a nice short one and being a first time cruiser I figured I’d start off small. I cruised with my family of two teenage boys and we all loved it. There was plenty for everyone to do on the ship. We really enjoyed the food and selection of drinks available. I have never eaten or drank so much in my life. When I got my final bill, there were no hidden charges or fees. I really appreciated that. We actually wind up leaving with a credit due to staying under the preauthorized amount charged to my credit card. With everything that was included and complimentary on the ship we barely spent any additional money which was a nice unexpected treat. We ate mostly at the complimentary restaurants but did catch a show that that did include a charge and a three-course meal. My boys are still talking about how good the food and show was. The service was impeccable and I just couldn’t ask for better memories to be had with my family. We stayed in a balcony room with a beautiful unobstructed view of the ocean. It was nice to be able to open the balcony doors and get some fresh sea air into the room. We used room service for breakfast and the service was awesome. What I really enjoy about the staff working on the ship is that tipping is not expected. But the service is so good they make you want to tip them. I could not imagine not tipping such hard working people. Every time we left our rooms no matter how many times we were in and out during the day, we came back to clean rooms. Everywhere we ate had very clean surroundings. I would definitely cruise with Norwegian again. Looking forward to it. Read Less

Love Bermuda!!!! We saw this as a great chance to take a quick "Getaway". We love the ship experience as much as the itinerary, but the ship experience wasn't that great. The food and service wasn't that great, from osheehan's to the MDR's, to specialty dining, to the rude staff at customer service(on board). This cruise just seemed a little off, never saw the Captain, we heard him once on last sea day, only saw the CD one time. The entertainment was awesome!!! Our cabin attendant, Eric was awesome!!!!, the best ever. Overall we were disappointed, it was the first time we did not purchase a Cruise Next cert. (this was our fifth NCL cruise). Please please NCL, you have another shot in June to bring us back!!!!!!, this was the only cruise i ever considered reducing the daily gratuities (i just couldn't do it). We look forward to going back to Bermuda in June and finding out this was just a blip on the radar. Read Less

We did extensive research before going on the Breakaway and were worried about things we were seeing negatively reviewed before going; but being limited on timing of a vacation and wanting to go to Bermuda we booked anyway. We have only cruised once prior (Disney) and were underwhelmed (food was reminiscent of a bad wedding reception) We decided to go with open minds despite really not enjoying large crowds, being particular when it comes to food and service, and yes-histories of motion sickness. We drove to NYC and parked right at the dock, we found out later there are cheaper options but it was very convenient and a lot cheaper than flying somewhere. For the massive crowds of people we were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the process went to actually walk onto the ship (about 1 hour from car to our cabin). The cabins are not huge (balcony) but everything was clean. Throughout the week we engaged in a lot of the entertainment shows that were kid friendly and enjoyed them all. The circus show was good and the dinner was better than we expected. The "how to dance like a Norwegian" show was flat-out hilarious and my kids are still talking about it. We missed the Broadway show because we were told it was age inappropriate for our kids, it would have been nice to have another option. Burn the floor was great though and we loved Deal or no deal (won $50 too) The live comedy acts were funny too. We were able to schedule/get in for everything we wanted but did book the specialty dining before we left on the trip. Yes the pools were crowded and people wake up early to hold chairs all day. We went after breakfast, scouted an area and if no one came by for an hour or so we claimed the chairs. We met others who did the same thing and it was never an issue. Ever. The kids loved all the water slides and the sky course too (although the plank camera was not working). There was always something to do on the ship and we felt the service was great in all aspects; we got credit back at the end and the lines were always manageable at the help desk. Bars were definitely crowded (we had the unlimited package) but during shows servers walked around and we never felt ignored. I will say mixed drinks were better when you were at the bar vs a server coming by but beyond that we had no issues. With all the negative reviews about this, believe me we were waiting for it to be an issue and it never was. They even offered our children non-alcoholic drinks and they were no charge (mudslides or daquaris). Food: we are particular and expect excellence. The first dinner was not good at all-cold salty cod at Taste. The rest of the entire week was fantastic. (and we found out we could have asked for another meal but didn't later on) 2nd least favored was Cirque show but it was hot and mostly tasty-just nothing special. Most of the other meals were at the Manhattan room or speciality restaurants. Mortons is a fantastic steakhouse-ranks with Ruth Chris and worth the money. Teppenyaki was also delicious and worth the extra fee. The regular dining at the Manhattan room was surprisingly good-delicious foods, lots of choices nightly that were not the same and excellent service all around. We ate most breakfasts and lunch in the buffet which were pretty good for buffets and quick. The desserts were so-so in all the restaurants. Bermuda was gorgeous-snorkeling was high lite. One word of advise do NOT purchase the bus passes. Total waste of money they take forever to come through on the route, we ended up missing part of a day for this. The tour buses seem to be better from what we heard or the ferries. Our steward was very nice, we didn't see him very often but he kept our room clean. The other travelers were nice too, no issues of crowding or elevator-hogging like some reviewers have noted. ONE complaint for the entire cruise was the stinky stale smoke smelling casino-smack in the middle of the ship (convenient) and we thought it took away from the beautiful staircase and the Noodle Bar. It's a shame. Febreeze is wonderful thing-or at least pull up the carpets No motion sickness until the last night coming through a storm to NYC. The ship is so big I hardly felt movement all week prior. We would definitely cruise Norwegian again-we had a fantastic time despite being a little nervous from reviews (let me say again we are particular and expect a lot for our money). Disembarking couldn't have been easier-we chose to do it ourselves, walked down to the line, out the Customs line and to our car in less than 30 minutes. The Breakaway didn't disappoint. Read Less
