I was really looking forward to escaping the cold. Great Stirrup Cay, sounded wonderful. I had been on the Gem before and loved that I would know my way around. I decided to go cheap on the cabin this time and book an inside cabin. I was surprised by how much shelves, drawers, closets etc. there was to unpack all my things. I always use a shoe organizer to store all my bathroom necessities. I did have to store this in the other side of the door, but there were also 3 glass shelves in the bathroom which gave plenty of storage. I was surprised at the cracked in many places sink. Dining was ridiculous! No one seemed to know what they were doing or where they should be. Getting waited on took forever, getting water took a long time, and the food took longer than I ever remember even when they were not busy at all. The food for the most part was excellent although sometimes coffee was cold and sometimes almost sludgy. This was the first time I did not have a beverage package and I did not like it. I did notice that the drinks I paid for where in no way comparable to my last cruise with the Gem. I feel bad that I told many people how much better the drinks were than the ones we had on our Celebrity cruise. I enjoyed the shows and classes I attended. The stage seemed a bit crowded at times, too many people for the small stage. We had laundry done and clothing turned up missing, clothing in room turned up missing. We left the room one afternoon, I had a glass of water by my bed, to take medications with, when we got back the beds were made, new towels were placed in the bathroom but in my glass of water were candy wrappers?? Now for the part that made me never want to sail with Norwegian again. The treatment I received as a handicapped guest. I can walk short distances and can not do stairs. One time after waiting 20 minutes the crew member asked who among the group was handicapped, after waiting 5 more minutes she turned to us and said she was tired of calling for assistance, we needed to go to customer service and ask for assistance ourselves. Thankfully I was able to find a place to sit while waiting. I was brought to tears many times on this cruise by how I was treated. When it came time to return we waited for 25 minutes for someone to return to their station for assistance to get back on the ship. The customs agent called Norwegian several times trying to get some assistance for me. Finally we asked them if we could use one of Norwegian’s wheelchairs and have someone in my group push me up the ramps to get back in the ship, when we got close enough we could see the person who had helped me before just standing there with several crew members, when we were almost on the ship he finally stepped towards us and asked if he could help!! I could go on, but just suffice it to say they were not very friendly to this handicapped person!! Read Less

I choose this cruise because a friend won the trip. We were treated well because we were Casino cruisers, so our embarkment was quick and painless! We ate when we got on the ship at OSheehan's and the food was not very good. The portions for the appetizers were small and although we could have ordered more they were not good enough to want to. I understand about why there are not straws, but it is hard to drink frozen drinks without a straw-there has to be a way around this. I was very disappointed on the overall trip and I would never travel on this line again especially at this time of year. I was surprised at the lack of pride many of the workers had for their jobs except for the bar staff, room staff and entertainment. The wait staff was less than efficient, most of the time the wait for food and drinks was poor. One night I did not get my glass of wine I ordered at the start of my meal until my dessert came. I was pleased that you could order 2 drinks at a time which came in handy since the staff was not good at coming to you. I felt the food was the same at the buffet each day- little variety, in the dining rooms it was almost the same each night. I had pork one night and it was tough, and a steak another that was less than tender. I had a couple pasta meals with seafood that were good- On Carnival we had lobster one night- Hmm did I miss that night on the Gem- nope was not offered. I was unimpressed with the taste and variety. Excursions? I missed a whole island with no compensation, Our excursion in Florida was cancelled, and Nassau was fine. super disappointing! The shows were impressive- the bands were fantastic and the dancers in Blazin Boots and the show the last night were superb.supurb I would most likely go back to Carnival even if they charged more for the same cruise, because the staff seems to really like their jobs-they have entertainment at meals and the staff was great with the children. I did not feel any connection with any of the servers except for at the bars. Read Less

My review is based on past NCL experiences as we are Gold members on NCL, have sailed on Royal Carib, Princess & Celebrity, most of our cruising has been on NCL, as we liked the food, freestyle and restaurants. The cabin, room steward and some of the food/bar servers were exceptional and I feel sorry that they are subjected to management policies that have impacted NCL experience. The food has gone terribly downhill, I had to return my meal in the French restaurant as I could not even cut the veal with a knife it was that tough. Always loved Cagneys, but that has also suffered from management trying to cut expenses. The potatoes au gratin were like tasteless cardboard, could not eat those. Sauces served with meat were tasteless. The buffet is SO unappealing to even look at no less eat there, dried out burgers sitting out for hours, what used to be lox and capers is now a dollop of pink cream cheese with one caper on top of it. In the main dining room, again rationing capers 4 at most. French onion soup in main dining room has no cheese on it at all, instead they told us the cheese is baked into the crouton floating in the soup, just terrible did not even eat that. Top it off with how can you make a dessert look and taste unappealing, NCL can do it. Tender wait to private island was too long and crew staff loudly arguing among themselves in the main dining room and the tender to private island, very uncomfortable. NCL pool area has always been tacky looking and I did not go into their pool. Some cruisers at the pool very downright rude and absent any manners. Cruise director was just okay.. everything was extremely ear blasting loud from pool activities, bands to shows, the book I was reading was vibrating it was that loud....Gym is nice. Hoping NCL gets their act together, will give it one more chance before going back to Princess / Royal. Read Less

Not much to do .very boring food wasn’t good very greasy ,couldn’t hear any of the announcers ,accents and speaking to low.lines were to long for food crowded on deck too,It was very uncomfortable on deck the chairs were so close to each other I couldn’t even lay out without a perv next to me eye balling me because he was inches away the chairs are too close not enough room ,they should of had some one come around with coffee and juice in the morning since they only had very few machines for it the wait was annoying ,the fruit wasn’t ripe,they kept locking the door to the upper deck 13 so you had to down the stairs to go to the bathroom it was a pain then they didn’t sell any big cups just coffe mugs so if you wanted water you had to get two small cups with very little ice , they had a store that had not much of nothing Read Less

Last minute cruise... Travel agent tried convincing not to take Norwegian so adamant I thought she was getting a cut from other cruise lines I've taken. Called Nowegian & booked anyway. BIG MISTAKE Here's why: 1. Luggage was visibly smashed after searching it 2. Hair in sink. FECES on the inside toilet lid. Told the desk. Told it was cleaned. Later that night FECES was STILL there 3. Bartender rolled eyes because drink made was SOOO sour I NICELY asked for orange juice to cut it 4. Excursion desk worker was RUDE! 5. Front desk dismissive 6. Cabin light was like a strobe light 7. When I tried to share concerns, I was told it wasn't necessary & NONE of the issues were in my docket 8. Toilet would flush after 11:30pm 9. POOR customer service, was in tears as a result! 10. Heard others agree & complain about their experiences and treatment at the desk. I took ONLY my 13 year old and he was bored MOST of the time due to a lack of teen level interesting activities. We chose this cruise to take our family for a summer vacation.This was a disaster .We couldn't understand the cruise director as she was from chile.The music player on deck and the nightclubs was mainly spanish,which we don't speak or understand.The adult only got this had kids in it all the time.No security of officials to monitor poolside rules.Children running in restaurants while waiters carrying glass trays.Also adult male assaulting his girlfriend and security fighting with him in hall.Not Good i wasn't happy or satisfied with this cruise on the Gem. Waiters and room attendants where great.Not much else. Also we got the drink package and some of the bars made your drink and some of the other bars didn't make that drink.The disembark fiasco on nd private island took forever.It seemed like nobody was in charge boats leaving not full and other boats to full. I don’t even know where start!!! Me and my wife cruise a lot we normally cruise Royal Caribbean but we had a bad experience years ago with Norwegian and decided to give it another chance. The crew on Norwegian are very dull unlike Royal Caribbean when we where at pool the person doing game couldn’t get people into it when we tried to talk to people at front desk they where unprofessional talked down to you. The big one was the food on this ship was beyond horrible. I ate better food at Mc Donald’s. The bottom line is we gave it another chance and years later it’s the same. So definitely look into another cruise line besides Norwegian. I know a lot of people complain cause something went wrong on cruise but I’m just giving out advice to that person that is going to cruise for there first time and don’t want them to be disappointed. To add one more thing I was waiting on line at service desk heard a customer complaining of carbon monoxide in there room and person at front desk said to them they will send someone down to clean room again then when customer got furious I started video taping which I think I will be handing over to news and see what they think. I found cups and tissue in the water. #2 There was no staff ensuring kids stood in kid’s pool and only adults were in adult pool. #3 Not enough chairs/tables near pool area, if you didn’t get there by 8am you were not getting a chair near the pool you’d have to sit on second level which is very inconvenient. #4 Not enough staff serving drinks in pool area, casino and bingo games. #5 I had my room person cleaned every other day, I guess person responsible for cleaning my room didn't like this because he told me I must let him clean my room day before we docked because he needed to get it ready for next guest ... REALLY?!?!? #6 I was travelling with a party of 35 ppl, some of us received our excursion tickets some of us didn't, some of us received cute towel animals some of us didn't, some of us received complimentary chocolate, some of us didn't, there was no consistency in service #5 if I paid for the all you can drink package why are you charging me for the mini bar? #6 if you're going to play family movies in the atrium make the area more family friendly #7 the air conditioner in my room was horrible. My party was 7 people, I booked 2 state rooms with balconies, we were part of a Family Wedding over 50 people booked, 19 cabins including suites, most on 9th and 10th deck, some lower decks as well. Cabins very small, states two queen or two full beds, its one queen and a pull out couch with a hard partially foam mattress. Had to ask for more comforters to add support for both rooms. Service was awful, our rooms were rarely made up before dinner still dirty all day. Dirty glasses were always left in our rooms. as we walked around the ship we kicked garbage as we walked, like empty cups in open deck areas, Lounge chairs all around ship where stacked and locked by 6/7 pm every day. We couldn't go to the pool to enjoy a night swim, or sit in the hot tub and relax, as they where closed by 10p. Not one staff member could answer your questions, they just simply replied "I don't Know". When you call guest services to add a soda package they advise you that all you need to do is go to any bar on the ship and they can add that for you. It took 2 days and 7 bartenders before i lost it and finally they added it. Like WtH? Was also told could add water package at any bar and that too was turning in to a production, Until I said no no no, I want your manager please. then what do you know, no manager needed a little bit of mumbling with another behind the bar in a foreign language and 30 minutes later water was delivered to our room and we tipped him too! The food was not very good, there was not many choices at the buffet, same food everyday, going to the restaurants the service was awful. One restaurant was 24/7 and they were the best food on the ship. other then that food and service terrible, felt very unorganized while we were going on excursions and ports , very rushed not enough time for what the charge is on the islands. Staff was eh, there was a handful of amazing staff and they know who they are. Our Family is already planning another Cruise. So within the first day, we got into our room & were ready to start our vacation, we swiped in it was fine. However, after leaving to explore the ship we returned and could not get into the room with our cards. We went down to Guest Services who promised it to be fixed. However after over an hour it had become a fight between the carpenter, security, and guest services who was in charge of fixing our door. In the same trip to guest services I purchased a caps & corks package for my daughter and a soda package. However, every single day I was charged for the beers my daughter was drinking out with friends the night before. The guest services would fight with me but eventually took the overcharges off. At one point, they called our room to tell us to come down and receive a complementary towel for our troubles. We went down to where there was no towel and received an attitude that they never called in the first place. Our cabin steward was amazing, however most staff was just pure mediocre. Overall dining and alcoholic beverages both could be described as hit or miss depending on where and when and made by who. There wasn't a ton to do, especially considering most bars closed early and there was little to nothing for my son who was just below drinking and clubbing age. Port Canaveral was okay, we went to Cocoa Beach. Great Stirrup Cay was the best of the three as we had a cabana but the taxes put on by the ship are insane. My daughter greatly enjoyed snorkeling there as well. Nassau was very overly hyped and seemed quite dangerous in some areas on our bus tour, falsely advertised as beautiful. Worst Vacation EVER. Drink package, Premiere dinning package, but yet everywhere we went or most of what we wanted there was an up-charge. Two pools that we couldn't get anywhere near. One was for kids and the other was adults. The cruise was very geared to children. There was no area that children were not allowed. And Water even with the drink package I had to pay for bottled water or get it through the tap. The fees for everything was crazy. The only place that we went to that the staff and service was perfect, was the Martini Bar. They were kind, and attentive every time time that we were there. And whenever they saw us on the ship, they always went out of there way to say hello to my husband and myself. When we have to ask " Are we allowed to eat her?, or am I allowed to order this?", then this was not a good vacation, especially after purchasing the drink and food package. And every time I went to the courtesy desk to speak with someone in regards to my excursion that we booked for Nassau, they pushed me over to the excursion desk whom 4 times where not there to help. So at this point I am still trying to speak with someone as to why I paid $178 for an excursion when everything we did over at Atlantis was free. This was our 4th cruise with NCL, our first on The Gem. The last three were on The Breakaway! The room steward was very clean, but never called us by name! In the past, the room stewards were so friendly and personable, to us and the kids. We were disappointed that our stip at their private island was cancelled at 11am the day we were supposed to go, due to dangerous water currents! We sailed around aimlessly until 6pm when we docked in Nassau, and were allowed off the ship, only to find out AFTER we got off the ship, that everything was closed. It seemed to me that this was a "training ship". Entertainment was ok. I will say that that acrobatic show was amazing, as was the juggling show. The room was a balcony room. Biggest problem? We had no access to the balcony once the beds were set up for our two kids! Poor room set up, why put Pullman bed in front of balcony????? The room had less than enough storage for a family of four! If you do not eat pork due to your health or religious views then I highly recommend some other cruise ship because Norwegian includes pork on most cooked or grilled meals. Very disappointing and unfair . Do not waiste your money for unlimited WiFi internet because it’s super slow. I prepaid for unlimited internet and it takes 3 min to load a youtube video . I tried using the internet in their library and it was still not responding total waiste of $200. Room service is great and also they do have fun activities to keep you entertained. They clean the cabin every day and respond to every request on time .Their employees are very helpful and provide great customer service. Read Less

The steaks look like black pancakes, the lobster bisque looked like turkey gravy and the service was terrible. Every time I went to the pool deck their was a very distinct smell of urine and it was very close to where they serve the outdoor buffet. We stayed in their Haven and they would not even set up the outside furniture when asked to do so. When we asked why we were never given an answer and always told "sorry you feel this way" They never showed us to our room, never unpacked our bags,set up the room like we were told it would be and as advertised. They denied us access to the captains cocktail hour as well as two different shows. If you watch the Haven video on their website expect the exact opposite. Trying to order room service we where hung up on multiple times. One morning 4am all your heard was loud banging. Norwegian thought it would be a good tie to start scraping one of the decks to repaint. Good call. We asked multiple people the same questions and received multiple answers. spend your money elsewhere. This company is a rip off nothing is as advertised they even use stock photos on their website. Rooms were unclean-my daughters had to be cleaned 3 times. Entres were good but desserts were so bland especially from the buffet. Pool water should have been heated since we left out of new york. Coffee was horrendous and to get a decent cup you had to pay for it at an overcrowed bar. activites for the kids were disorganized and you could never hear what the person was saying or able to understand them. I got charged twice for a movie and nobody helped me with a refund and if you called the reception area, the normal responce was someone would be sent to the room and no one came, such a horrible waste of money and time on my part. The ship was small but nice. The cabin was exactly as it was described. The food was very disappointing. It was near impossible to get reservations at a specialty restaurant for a time that was convenient. If you don't book it right away, you lose out. The entertainment was great. I really enjoyed the shows. The onboard entertainment however was again a disappointment. The one nightclub was full of kids. Even though it says over 18 (after 11:30). The activities were ok, but the extra charge for what you get is not worth a cent. I never had a chance to go in the pool or hot tubs. So many little kids, especially in the hot tubs. Families spent the entire day in them. No children should be allowed in them under 16. The bars opened late but no matter when you went to the bar, they were always understaffed so getting a drink took a while (sometimes up to a half hour of waiting). The private beach, Stirrup Cay, was no prize. The water was very hazy. The rocks were painful. Trying to find a section to walk in the water without hitting rock was near impossible. All in all, I don't think I would cruise this line again. Read Less

I have been on two cruises with Celebrity to Bermuda and loved the cruise experience. My son graduated highschool and I wanted to celebrate that and my 50th birthday with a cruise. Leaving out of Manhattan Harbour was easy so we chose Norweigan. Big mistake. When I booked my cruise i was told that I had two perks I could chose. I chose the drink package and specialty dining. I was told that If i gave consent , my 19 year old son would be able to have beer or wine with out package. When I paid for my trip, my sons package showed only soda. I called Norweigan and was told that was just a technicality and on board they would correct it. Well on board I was told that he could only have soda, and if he wanted beer or wine he would have to pay for it. He even tried to order a virgin strawberry daquiri and was charged for it. I explained to guest services that my package came with unlimited beverages. My son wasnt even allowed to get juice . Talk about BAIT and SWITCH. He couldnt even get bottled water. Get this , there is a special water package if you want bottled water. Guest services told me they couldnt give him the drink package with alcohol because he was not 21. Even though I was told other wise, I could accept something if its the law, but why couldnt he have juice. After all one of my perks was the drink package. My next perk was specialty dining. I reserved my restaurants online and called guest services to confirm them. Then I went to the restaurant and was told that i had no reservation and would not be able to be seated at 530 ( our reservation) and we could wait till 9 pm. I assured the maitre de that i indeed had a reservation and that guest services confimed it. I was asked to bring proof of my reservation with me. How could I do that.? The cruise was suppossed to be the time to relax and be pampered. That is how I remembered my Celebrity cruise. At dinner , when my son recieved water to drink, he was never able to get a refill. They were too busy. The food at the buffet was sub par. I looked up the specialty restaurants menus online before selecting which ones to chose. Le Bistro had lobster on their menu so I chose that one. When I got there, it was a different menu. I was told there is no lobster on the entire ship. There are plenty of hotdogs,hamburgers and chicken wings. This was so disappointing. I was even questioned once, why i wanted a beer before my daquiri was even finished. I couldnt believe it. I was sitting alone at the bar. I could write so much more but just re thinking how horrible this cruise was is making me upset again. Read Less

Went with other families. Embarkation was average. Disembarkation was terrible. Put handi-capped person in the longest line to get to customs desk. Had to complain to get sent to right line. Very long lines and only 3 terminals open. Food was bad at best. Service was just as bad. Had to wait an hour to get dinner. Not big amount of choices on menus. They ask how you want your steak cooked, you tell them and it comes out wrong. Cruise staff had very few right answers. Ask 3 people the same question, get 3 different answers. Shows at night were good. Not alot of activities to choose from during the days at sea. Time in ports was very limited. Arrived at odd hours. Great Stirrup Cay was great. Nice island. Only problem was no transportation for handi-capped people to get to the cabanas which was about a 10 minute walk from where you come in. WOULD NOT SAIL ON NORWEGIAN AGAIN!!!!! 1st Family member got sick the night before, not able to make the trip, awaiting to see if insurance I took out will cover it. 2nd My room was over the theatre so I had to be subjected to rehearsals during the afternoon and 2 shows in the evening, breaking my sleep from a nap in the afternoon, in my sleep in the evening. 3rd A bag of duty clothes was left under my bed I’m assuming from a prior guess, so how well did housekeeping do their job along with the room be dusty. 4th I was locked on the balcony because the inside handle slipped down in locked me out of the room, I had to scream at the top of my voice in wave my hands to get people’s attention that was walking from the ships in the Bahamas for help until someone heard me on the 10 deck and got housekeeping to unlock the balcony door, mind you the door locks from the inside. 5th I didn't see anything that really caught my attention concerning the food, I just about ate chicken wings, fries, hamburgers and pizza just about every day. 6th I went to take a shower before I departed off the ship in the hot water was cold. 7th Getting off the ship had to be the worst the line went from mid-ship to the back of the ship to go around in a circle to end up back mid-ship to depart. This was our first cruise. We loved the size of the Norwegian Gem. Had easy access to everything. The mini-suite with balcony was perfect for four adults. Only issue with the cabin was the shower. The tub is very high and I have knee issues so difficult to get in and out. We loved our day at Great Strirrup Cay. Had heard mixed reviews but we found it to be our favorite stop. My husband and daughters did the waved runners. Would highly recommend that. We decided to go to Atlantis while in Nassau. We found it to be too overwhelming for such a short period of time. Very hard to navigate through Atlantis so we felt that most of the day was spent walking aimlessly. Wish we had just sat at the beach which was absolutely stunning. However, would not recommend a day at Atlantis which is a very expensive excursion. Read Less

We chose Norwegian because it was only one of two cruise lines that leave from Manhattan. We wanted a quick seven day get away and wanted to leave from Manhattan where we live. Problems started on day one before we even got under way when we boarded and the staterooms were not ready. We had to wait a few hours before we could go to our rooms and settle in. The food aboard the ship, with the exception of one specialty restaurant, was horrible. Service was not the best, either. For example, it took a very long time to get a waiter to come over to take a drink order when sitting in a lounge. The theatre entertainment was very good, but there was very little of interest to me to do aboard the ship. This was acutely felt when one of the excursions was canceled because of rough seas and we had to spend three straight days aboard the ship. I could not wait to get off. Many of our fellow passengers were very loud and unruly. There was a lot of drinking aboard the ship. Finally, disembarking the ship was an absolute nightmare. We stood on line for over two hours waiting to get off the ship when we arrived back in NYC. Then, on the pier, the lines for customs clearance were unbelievable. With the exception of a few very wonderful staff members, the overall cruise was terrible. I will never cruise with NCL again nor would I recommend the cruise line to anyone, friend or foe. Read Less

We took our son on a cruise to celebrate his 21st birthday and not knowing this would be our worst cruise ever! At the terminal in NY, we were greeted by an older woman that was so nasty and unfriendly! Check-in ok, new person training so it went a little slower, but ok with that. Sunday, we get a new travel plan for our cruise. The paper said that the Bahamas were having elections on the day we were to be there and things would be closed so instead of going Wednesday, we would be there Tuesday. However by the Captain doing this, we lost time in Florida on Monday, Tuesday our son's 21st birthday was a complete mess (we had booked a cabana on Great Stirrup Cay) and we lost 5 hours in the Bahamas. So then we leave and sail to Great Stirrup Cay for Wednesday. We arrive there and we are up at 6am since we had early tender time and up on deck 13 drinking coffee, when Captain lying pants comes on and says we are not going due to rough waters! Really, they were are calm as could be! Then for about 4-5 hours we are sailing in front of the island! Issue was since he changed our ports of call there was no room for our ship so he lied instead of being honest! That's all this trip was the whole week! Lie after lie! No refund! No management to complain to and they even had security come up when the guest went to complain! Worst cruise ever! Read Less

My wife and I recently returned from our very first cruise! It was a 7-Day Florida/Bahamas cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem departing from NYC. Not knowing what to expect, we decided to only do very little research in order to truly experience everything for the first time, I have to tell you our experience from embarkation to disembarkation was A+! Everything from first day to the last, from the check in/boarding process to the dinners/entertainment to the shore excursions to the ports of call were well above anything we could've imagined. It was truly the trip of a lifetime and we are already planning our next cruise. We chose Norwegian for their stellar reputation and will continue to be loyal to the brand. Some highlights from the trip include the personalized service from many of the on board staff, the private cabanas at Great Stirrup Cay, the FOOD, the shows, and the shopping in downtown Nassau. Absolutely top notch and second to none. I am not sure how Norwegian will ever top our first experience, but we will certainly give them many more chances! Read Less

I received a phone call from NCL 3 days before the ship sailed offering me a cabin for a very good price especially because I sail alone and most times must pay for 2 people. The cabin was very comfortable for one person so I was happy. It was small for 2 people and if you are a little heavy you might have a lot of trouble in the bathroom. I also have to tell you that the food aboard this ship was quite good, but was in for a shock when I saw the complimentary menu, part of it was ala carte with a big price tag. Most of the specialty restaurants are also ala carte with huge prices attached to them and along with a very expensive bottle of wine can cost you more then you want to pay. Shocking. Now for the water, look and see what they want for water after they throw yours in the garbage. All they want is you to drink and gamble. Be careful, you can really get into financial trouble. I met no one on the ship that was happy with NCL, The bad was so bad that it was impossible to be happy for what was good. Shame on them, they are taking everything. that was nice about sailing away from the people so they can build bigger ships. Don't bother turning on your TV, they do not want you in your cabin, they want you at the bar. The entertainment at night was good but do not look for anything worthwhile during the day, boring, they certainly do not want to spend any money unless they have to. The pool area is ,like a zoo, so many people and dirty, how can they keep it clean when it is too small for so many, a disgrace. They lost a lot of good people after this sailing. Read Less
